The border fence sunset

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 26, 2008 02:00 PM

Thought you should see this alert going out from Grassfire.org:

Sun Sets On Border Fence On 12/31/08

According to our contact in Rep. Duncan Hunter’s office, the fence-gutting provision that was put into the omnibus spending bill just before Christmas also causes the Department of Homeland Security’s authority on constructing new border fencing to expire at the end of this year. In essence, the sun sets on the border fence on December 31 of this year! In fact, our contact tells us the bill language could be interpreted as a prohibition against any fence construction after December 31 of this year.

Here’s the exact provision from H.R. 2764:

“In carrying out this section, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall –

“(i) identify the 370 miles, or other mileage determined by the Secretary, whose authority to determine other mileage shall expire on December 31, 2008, along the southwest
border where fencing would be most practical and effective…”

Next President under no legal authority to build any border fencing

Consider what this means for the 2008 elections. The next President — whether it be Obama or Clinton or McCain — will have no clear legal authority to build any of the border fence at all. We will have a pro-amnesty president who not only doesn’t want to build the double-layer fence, he or she legally does not have to!

As a result, this fall’s elections could prove less important for border security than what you and I do right now to restore the Secure Fence Act. You may know that Grassfire led the fight to expose the “Border Fence Funding Hoax of 2006-7″ — Congress’ plan to gut the Secure Fence Act last year. Now, we’re pushing to get the Act restored. In three weeks, Ron De Jong and I will take part in a major press conference with Members of Congress on Capitol Hill to present Grassfire’s petitions to Restore the Secure Fence Act.

Right now, we have about 117,000 signers. We simply must have 250,000 petitions in three weeks. If you haven’t done so already, please go here to sign the petition.

Grassfire’s “Where’s The Fence?” Ad Wins Award

Finally, I’m thrilled to announced that Grassfire.org’s “Where’s The Fence?” ad won the prestigious Silver Pollie Award from the American Association of Political Consultants in the Issue Advocacy division. The ad — produced by our friends at Rapid Response Media (which won three Pollies this year) — had a measurable impact on last summer’s amnesty debate. It was certainly one of the most successful media campaigns we ahve conducted and if you supported this ad, then you share in this award.

Steve Elliott

Here’s the ad:

Oh, well. At least US funds will help pay for that fence…in Egypt.

As noted the other day, the practicality of erecting 5,525 miles of fence to contain the Canadian border and 1,989 miles of fence to separate the US from Mexico still leaves over 95,000 miles of coast line to protect. We should be treating border enforcement like cattle ranching. Focus on the highest traffic areas and round em up.

Yep, I’ve been saying exactly that for many years.
As a doc, I have to deal with regulatory bodies and hospital administrations and bureacracies.
And that’s exactly what the deal, while perhaps not in all, is in so many instances:

“The people making the decisions never have to live with the consequences of them.”

The sort-of converse to that statement I ran across a dozen or more years ago in Newsweek (a little while before we canceled our subscription) in a cover story on job stress.

At, or very near, the end of the article, it stated that the definition of job stress is having the responsibility for a job, but no control over it.

    Ain’t it the truth.

On a lighter note, the cover of that issue of Newsweek, titled “Job Stress”, had Mr. Dithers twirling poor Dagwood Bumstead over his head!
    Classic!

One of several reasons our household has planned to use our stimulus package to stockpile ammunition and foodstuffs for the 2nd revolution/civil war looming in the very near future. I believe it was Kipling that wrote “one can never have too many books, too much wine, or too much ammunition.”

I haven’t seen this country so divided since the 1850s, our political overlords (some think themselves elected for life) could give a damn about the average citizen’s safety or our national sovereignty, the callously spend our stolen tax dollars on pork barrel projects, the beyond broken political selection process by both parties, and one political party in league with the Soros funded minions continue to attack our military giving their very lives and limbs to fight our enemies overseas despite our wide open borders. Eventually the frustration level of the average taxpayer will be set off by one incident too many thanks to our wide open borders or a mass casualty attack and the fight will be on.

And, I think more and more that that might be the only way to save our nation.

So, once (hopefully quite soon) my wife and I get the hell out of this dreadful blue state (what was I thinking that I took this job and moved here?), I’m seriously considering (more and more each day) purchasing a firearm/s; and learning how to use it/them safely and really, really effectively, should the ultimate need arise.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

You mean in the White House and Congress? Or are you a Democrat who believes in free flow of illegal drugs and real felons across the border from Mexico?

If ever there was an illegal, kangaroo-court proceeding, it was the case of a serial drug-smuggler’s word being accepted over that of two men sworn to uphold the law. The fact that the smuggler was given a cross-the-border-free pass and other preferential treatment is highly suspect, too, as was pressure put on the court to ignore/seal testimony and allow the government persecutors to distort the facts, over and over.

I’m not really surprised you would take this erroneous view. After all, the MSM proclaimed Ramos and Compean guilty, and neither MM nor Rash Limbaugh or any other “conservative pundits” bothered to get involved.
