Wife saw the news this morning. We drove back along I-64 this afternoon, our regular route for these outings. They still had it down to one lane eastbound just past the Afton crest. They had what looked like a surveyor on the overpass. Still plenty of State Police on hand, too. I dislike concealed carry permits, only because I don't think it's the government's business whether I have a weapon or not. (I remember my dark days in Seattle when they were proposing licensing to even own a gun, short or long, let alone having a concealed carry permit.) But I can tell you that carry permit or not, having a handgun on hand in this situation would really be pretty useless. The sniper (or snipers) was on a high overpass. Traffic is moving 60+ mph and it occurred at night. Where the hell would I shoot? And how? From the moving car? Pull off and engage in a firefight? Maybe this person had a night vision scope? And the moon hadn't even risen yet. Also, there is no immediate exit for that overpass. You're either climbing or descending a small mountain depending on the direction you're headed. The best thing to have on hand in this situation is a working cell phone to get the law on the scene as quickly as possible. My family and I were camping in the Blue Ridge this week for Spring Break.
