A real sniper on the loose in Charlottesville
CHARLOTTESVILLE — State police say a sniper wounded two people and hit at least four cars on Interstate 64 near Afton Mountain this morning.
The injuries were not life-threatening and the victims were treated and released from Augusta Medical Center. More than 20 miles of I-64 was closed between Charlottesville and Waynesboro from shortly after midnight until about 6:20 a.m.
State troopers, Charlottesville police and Albemarle County deputies are searching wooded areas along the interstate, but no suspect has been found. Police were stationed on overpasses near Greenwood and Crozet.
One of the victims drove himself to the hospital. The other was transported, said Sgt. Dave Cooper, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police. It’s unclear whether they were struck by a bullet or injured by flying glass.
The sniper fire apparently took place near the Greenwood overpass east of Afton Mountain, Cooper said. Four vehicles were shot at beginning shortly after midnight.
The driver of the first vehicle called police. A second report of a shooting lead to the shutdown of the interstate, said Cooper.

I wish people like this just did the world a favor and took their own lives or sought out help. There is no acceptable reason for this.
Reason 2,347,845,222,739 for conceal carry. It is getting crazy out there. Malls, churches, highways, homes…
…and how could I forget - schools.
Some whack job probably snapped at all the sniper
storieslies.I blame Hillary. no joke there either.
Here’s hoping they catch the creep ASAP.
Very scary.
Talking of guns, saw this on Sky News today..
Send in the Hildabeast - she is a decorated veteran now…
In such a remote area, a helicopter with heat sensing equipment could likely smoke out the sick perp.
What’s your point sausage? (Like you ever have one)
sausage,
Don’t bother providing links that only serve to justify your hysterics.
Sausage is a self-loathing Brit.
Our prayers to those wounded by this irresponsible and deranged individual. For our trolls it is not the weapon it is the dumbass misusing it that is to blame.
I have to agree with NavyTim we need to alert “she who must not be named” to swoop in there with her team and lay down some suppressing fire to smoke out this sniper. After all she did earn her Combat Infantry Badge in Kosovo.
Just like the idiot who was shooting at cars in Columbus, OH not too long ago. He was a loser, just as this person is. Luckily he was caught in, where else, Sin City.
Snausage and lgm
Together again
I thought she was the first “First Lady” to earn the Medal of Honor.
Hmmmm…
aj,
Good one.
Well, it IS the “Congressional” MOH

Right Snausage, the guy misused a tool… i take it you’re implying in your passive aggressive way that “guns are bad for people and animals…” well how about chainsawas, they’ve been used to kill accidentally and lots of other tools…
Hey sausage,
When the jihadis are coming for you and you undoubtedly will not be armed. You can try and stop then with your handy dandy skills of communication.
max,
Let’s not forget there are some people who drill holes in their heads - literally.
Ban drills!
them
Things I could feasibly use to kill another human (or Sausage):
No. 2 “Hello Kitty” pencil.
My bare hands.
Hammer
Butter knife
Metal spatula
Pillow
Fishing line
Spoon
I could go on. These simple truths escape the logic of liberals.
Maybe they should ban baseball bats too: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,341751,00.html
Don’t forget, toys manufactured in China can kill, too.
One year in Chicago in the late 80’s 26 people were murdered with baseball bats.
Down with evil baseball bats!
On the sniper, Soap has it right — this is just one more reason for Concealed Carry among the law abiding. Yes, I know in this case it’s kind of hard to shoot back while driving at someone you can’t even see, but what if you were to happen accross this nut as he was exiting his perch?
There are plenty of stupid people out there (re: snausage’s link) but that doesn’t mean the firearm is to blame. Perhaps the nerd’s parents. Hey, libs love to blame someone’s environment during their upbringing. Maybe the guy is just too stoopid….
Wow, Brent sort of neat me too it!
#23, in some cities, carrying a baseball bat accessible to the driver or passengers is a violation or misdemeanor unless you are going to or from a ball game you’re playing in.
But what to do about random shooters?
Preventing law-abiding people from carrying a gun just makes the problem worse.
Quite. They should allow anyone in this area to be fully armed - just in case.
Arming more people is always the best solution I find.

“Hello Kitty Pencil”…. that’s rich…lol
Arming more people is the best solution. If the criminal knows that every one of his potential victims is not only packing, but also willing and eager to return fire, then he is far less likely to start shooting in the first place.
…or we could use the British system
Glad to see you’ve come to your senses, troll. That’s the most intelligent thing I’ve heard you say in months … even if it was unintentional.
It worked soooooo well for Washington DC.
Oh, wait…
9-mm is nice, but for real social work, you can’t beat a good, old-fashioned .45
Um, Snausage, when Florida passed its “Shall Issue” conealed carry law in 1987, violent crime did go down.
Could just be that arming as many law abiding citizens as possible does work.
A lot of people actually pontificate that adding armed people doesn’t help, but curiously, I’m not aware of any situation where it has not helped when tried. (ex.: Kennessaw, GA.)
cpodug - couldn’t agree with you more. 45s are the way to go.
#34 Going at least as far back as 1892.
I would be fine with more people concealing and carrying as long as it was made clear that anyone found to have shot someone who was not threatening someone else’s life is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
If someone shoots an unarmed man, even an unarmed criminal, the shooter should be charged with attempted murder or murder.
Scary stuff. I remember how it was with the Beltway Snipers/Two-Man Jihadists in 2002. Virginia is a carry-conceal state (at least it was when I lived there) and maybe this jerk will run into someone with superior marksmanship.
Why would this be unclear?
Perhaps I’m missing your point, but I don’t believe any here is equating conceal permits with a right to shoot unarmed people.
…or we could use the British system
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/jan/25/politics.ukguns
The UK, where guns are outlawed see a year on year increase in violent crime, particularly gun crime. Who’d have thought gun crime would be an issue in a country where the cops do not carry guns? A rather big flaw in liberal logic, wouldn’t you say?
Criminals will always get access to guns. Gun control laws only affect law abiding citizens. Anyone with half a brain and a little bit of common sense will understand that.
There’s the flaw in your argument, right there!
Truth is, it’s going to get A LOT WORSE before it gets better. Our elected officials threw all of us decent, taxpaying Americans under the bus years/decades ago!
Globalists and elitists hate our right to bear arms. The best way they can fight it is to create a GENERATION of thug/outlaw/criminals through their media pals. This GENERATION of sociopaths IS ARMED, and they don’t want to work! They believe, thanks to CRIMINALS like Obama’s “Pastor” Wright, that what WE have is rightly THEIRS, and will not simply surrender quietly. It’s GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’! And the psychotic culture we see daily that embodies that motto!
When America is even more of a war-zone, many will be calling for the repeal of the 2nd Ammendment! And the globalists will have won!
I’m confident who ever is responsible for this will be apprehended soon.
feeler is right - it will get worse.
Be ready for the worst, but the best is yet to come. We have to weather the coming storm(s).

Rusty, if a crimnal is trying to break into my house or take my car with my kids in it, I don’t care if he’s unarmed, I’m going to cap his or her a$$ with my gun and conceal/carry permit. But in your elitist point of view only criminals should have the use of guns.
30pcs: Playing the role of a troll.
You can’t prove that he was going to harm your kids. For all you know he was stealing your car with your kids in it to take them for ice cream.
30 - and a lovely troll you are, too
30 pcs-ha ha ha
According to CNN television, there’s a “Road Warrior on the Loose” in Virginia. Warrior. You know, like a murderer/terrorist shooting at people on a highway is synonymous with a warrior. Does that mean our warrior troops are murderer/terrorists or that terrorist/murderers are freedom fighter warriors?
Apparently CNN believes both are true.
Excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall.
Rusty,
You’re actually pretty darn close to the way it is in my home state of FL. While a law abiding citizen can obtain a permit, he cannot just shoot anyone he feels like.
On the other hand, sometimes even an “unarmed” criminal can cause loss of life to a person much smaller. Also, the “unarmed” criminal may be driving a 4000 lb. weapon.
My point in the above paragraph is that it is not always correct to say a bad guy cannot be shot unless he is armed. There are circumstances in which it is both acceptable and legal.
Blue Sky, well unfortunately that doesn’t surprise me one bit. The only one over there besides Glenn Beck who seems to actually like the military is that girl on in the morning-Robin something or another.
Very sad news. I hope none of my brethren at the University of Virginia have been hurt.
Yes, very sad news. Unfortunately, in our instant information age, where anything like this becomes national (CNN) instead of staying local, people seek out their few minutes of fame by creating violence. I wonder if this person(s) fired his shots, and then ran home to see if it was on “the news”…sitting there with a smile on his face. Sick, yes, but the MSM feeds off of this for ratings and sensationalism, and sick people comply. Some very ill people want to leave this earth on the front page of every newspaper and top headline on every news show. Both glady accept it.
My family and I were camping in the Blue Ridge this week for Spring Break. Wife saw the news this morning. We drove back along I-64 this afternoon, our regular route for these outings. They still had it down to one lane eastbound just past the Afton crest. They had what looked like a surveyor on the overpass. Still plenty of State Police on hand, too.
I dislike concealed carry permits, only because I don’t think it’s the government’s business whether I have a weapon or not. (I remember my dark days in Seattle when they were proposing licensing to even own a gun, short or long, let alone having a concealed carry permit.)
But I can tell you that carry permit or not, having a handgun on hand in this situation would really be pretty useless. The sniper (or snipers) was on a high overpass. Traffic is moving 60+ mph and it occurred at night. Where the hell would I shoot? And how? From the moving car? Pull off and engage in a firefight? Maybe this person had a night vision scope? And the moon hadn’t even risen yet. Also, there is no immediate exit for that overpass. You’re either climbing or descending a small mountain depending on the direction you’re headed.
The best thing to have on hand in this situation is a working cell phone to get the law on the scene as quickly as possible.
Virginia is a concealed carry state thanks to Gov. George Allen, Republican.
But you gotta see’em before you can shoot back.
Also in Virginia it is lawful to carry a weapon in the open. For many years one of our juvenile and domestic judges did just that.
Fox is reporting they got the guy.
