A real sniper on the loose in Charlottesville

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 27, 2008 09:40 AM

No joke:

CHARLOTTESVILLE — State police say a sniper wounded two people and hit at least four cars on Interstate 64 near Afton Mountain this morning.

The injuries were not life-threatening and the victims were treated and released from Augusta Medical Center. More than 20 miles of I-64 was closed between Charlottesville and Waynesboro from shortly after midnight until about 6:20 a.m.

State troopers, Charlottesville police and Albemarle County deputies are searching wooded areas along the interstate, but no suspect has been found. Police were stationed on overpasses near Greenwood and Crozet.

One of the victims drove himself to the hospital. The other was transported, said Sgt. Dave Cooper, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police. It’s unclear whether they were struck by a bullet or injured by flying glass.

The sniper fire apparently took place near the Greenwood overpass east of Afton Mountain, Cooper said. Four vehicles were shot at beginning shortly after midnight.

The driver of the first vehicle called police. A second report of a shooting lead to the shutdown of the interstate, said Cooper.

On the sniper, Soap has it right — this is just one more reason for Concealed Carry among the law abiding. Yes, I know in this case it’s kind of hard to shoot back while driving at someone you can’t even see, but what if you were to happen accross this nut as he was exiting his perch?

There are plenty of stupid people out there (re: snausage’s link) but that doesn’t mean the firearm is to blame. Perhaps the nerd’s parents. Hey, libs love to blame someone’s environment during their upbringing. Maybe the guy is just too stoopid….

The UK, where guns are outlawed see a year on year increase in violent crime, particularly gun crime. Who’d have thought gun crime would be an issue in a country where the cops do not carry guns? A rather big flaw in liberal logic, wouldn’t you say?

Criminals will always get access to guns. Gun control laws only affect law abiding citizens. Anyone with half a brain and a little bit of common sense will understand that.

    Rusty,

You’re actually pretty darn close to the way it is in my home state of FL. While a law abiding citizen can obtain a permit, he cannot just shoot anyone he feels like.

On the other hand, sometimes even an “unarmed” criminal can cause loss of life to a person much smaller. Also, the “unarmed” criminal may be driving a 4000 lb. weapon.

My point in the above paragraph is that it is not always correct to say a bad guy cannot be shot unless he is armed. There are circumstances in which it is both acceptable and legal.

Yes, very sad news. Unfortunately, in our instant information age, where anything like this becomes national (CNN) instead of staying local, people seek out their few minutes of fame by creating violence. I wonder if this person(s) fired his shots, and then ran home to see if it was on “the news”…sitting there with a smile on his face. Sick, yes, but the MSM feeds off of this for ratings and sensationalism, and sick people comply. Some very ill people want to leave this earth on the front page of every newspaper and top headline on every news show. Both glady accept it.

My family and I were camping in the Blue Ridge this week for Spring Break. Wife saw the news this morning. We drove back along I-64 this afternoon, our regular route for these outings. They still had it down to one lane eastbound just past the Afton crest. They had what looked like a surveyor on the overpass. Still plenty of State Police on hand, too.

I dislike concealed carry permits, only because I don’t think it’s the government’s business whether I have a weapon or not. (I remember my dark days in Seattle when they were proposing licensing to even own a gun, short or long, let alone having a concealed carry permit.)

But I can tell you that carry permit or not, having a handgun on hand in this situation would really be pretty useless. The sniper (or snipers) was on a high overpass. Traffic is moving 60+ mph and it occurred at night. Where the hell would I shoot? And how? From the moving car? Pull off and engage in a firefight? Maybe this person had a night vision scope? And the moon hadn’t even risen yet. Also, there is no immediate exit for that overpass. You’re either climbing or descending a small mountain depending on the direction you’re headed.

The best thing to have on hand in this situation is a working cell phone to get the law on the scene as quickly as possible.
