Not a joke: Saudi father murders daughter for using Facebook

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 1, 2008 09:38 AM

1fbs.jpg

In Afghanistan, it’s dancing on TV. In Saudi Arabia, the new forbidden thing is Facebook. Add it to the long, endless list of stuff Muslims don’t like. Yeah, I wish I were kidding you:

A young Saudi Arabian woman was murdered by her father for chatting on the social network site Facebook, it has emerged.

The unnamed woman from Riyadh was beaten and shot after she was discovered in the middle of an online conversation with a man, the al-Arabiya website reported.

The case was reported on a Saudi Arabian news site as an example of the “strife” the social networking site is causing in the Islamic nation.

Saudi preacher Ali al-Maliki
has emerged as the leading critic of Facebook, claiming the network is corrupting the youth of the nation.

“Facebook is a door to lust and young women and men are spending more on their mobile phones and the Internet than they are spending on food,” he said.

The woman was murdered in August but her death was highlighted following Maliki’s comments. Social customs and religious rules oblige women in Saudi Arabia to cover their head and figure with a veil so that men are not distracted by the female form.

Critics also allege that Facebook is an avenue for the promotion of homosexual relations in Saudi Arabia. More than 6,500 people have signed the online petition in a bid to stop the conservative Muslim kingdom following Syria in banning access to the network from local internet servers.

There are estimated to be more than 30,000 Facebook users in the oil-rich kingdom. Many Saudi women use nicknames and post comic images or drawings on their pages instead of photographs. Some Saudi bloggers have dubbed the network “Faceless”.

That’s soon to be “Headless,” if the Religion of Perpetual Outrage prevails.

***

Flashback: A Saudi woman in America posted her real photo on Facebook a few years ago and stirred up a storm.

…young women and men are spending more on their mobile phones and the Internet than they are spending on food…

So do the terrorists. How do they get messages to the world? The Internet. And haven’t cell phones been used in the past to trigger car bombs? See my above point. Apparently, it’s okay to use things typically considered haram so long as it furthers jihad, right?

One would think that since the left decries tolerance and freedom of this or that, that you be irate that these things are still occurring in the 21st century. Instead, you manage to find a way to throw Pres. Bush and America under the bus.

I guess you are right, the biggest threat is Christianity. You just keep believing in that…

The Bible is just as clear on tattoos and ear piercings as it is on homosexuality. People pick and choose what parts of the Bible to adhere to.

And I could care less if people get tattoos or piercings.

30, of course I am outraged by this murder. The way women are treated in many Islamic societies is barbaric and unacceptable. I was just making a comment about tattoos and how people treat them differently than any of the other sins in Leviticus or Paul’s Letters.

Catholicism’s attitude towards women is nothing to be proud of. Islam is exponentially worse.

Your ignorance of Christianity, Biblical teaching, and the like shines through in that comment, Rusty.

First - tattoos and body piercings. The Church teaching does not forbid them, nor is there Biblical basis for this - the NT passage you cite is referencing an earlier OT passage. In context, the passage immediately preceding the one you reference deals with the OT prohibition on cutting hair and/or beards. That, as we know, is not forbidden in Christianity.

I am *extremely* proud of how Catholicism treats me as a woman. Nothing in the teachings makes me a second-class citizen, or blames me for being attacked by a man, or allows my father/brother/uncle/male cousin to murder/beat me for crime of being adulterous, or the like.

If you disagree, how do you reconcile the Church’s reverence of Mary, the slew of female saints, and the women who are Doctors of the Church?

Just because the Church doesn’t buy into feminist hooey - but teaches women should be, in fact, women and embrace it their *genuine* femininity - doesn’t mean it treats women poorly. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Men and women were created in the image of God and to be equal but complimentary to one another - meaning their strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes would be different.

But both are accountable for their actions, men are *not* permitted to abuse women, and women are *not* considered property.

Granted, different Christian sects will treat that differently because they have different interpretations of the Bible. In the Catholic Church, you get dissenters - both conservative and liberal - who stray from official Church teaching, which I have explained here.

But there is *nothing* in Catholicism’s treatment of women that is shameful.

And yes - I’ve had people argue that since the Church won’t ordain women it’s just as abusive and oppressive as Islam and only a heartbeat away from condoning honor killings and burquas. I’ve had women (feminists) equate the mantilla with the burqua.

I’m always more than willing to discuss tthings with you, Rusty, but please have a better grasp of Catholic teaching before you argue points so erroneously.

I know most Christian churches no longer ban piercings or tattoos despite what the Bible says. It’s the picking and choosing that bothers me. Homosexuality is dealt with in the same book as tattoos and shellfish and clothing materials yet that’s still considered a sin by many Christian churches. Lobster, not so much.

The double standard is indefensible. Especially when, as I noted earlier, the Bible is clearer on tattoos than it is on gays.

Here’s a question for you: so what if Christians (Catholics) took everything in the Bible word-for-word literally? Would you not care then? Would you take the OT passages that deal harshly with things along with the new so long as things were “consistent”?

Sexuality deals more deeply with creation and the nature of mankind than tattoos or piercings - which is why the Church teaching on homosexuality is different from the teaching on tattoos.

The Church has taught that same-sex attracion (SSA) or “being gay” in and of itself is no more a sin than being heterosexual. However, the Church has *always* taught that the sexual acts are what could be sinful and that intercourse is reserved for marriage and should *always* be open to the possibility of creating life (which homosexuality cannot do).

There are considerations one should make before getting a tattoo or a piercing. You can read that here.

Otherwise, I would prefer to continue this discussion in e-mail, since it’s way off topic.

Islamists have been accused of using Facebook to spread anti-Semitism. Does this mean they will have to find another outlet, or is Facebook in fact a double-edged sword?

No - so long as anything is used to further jihad, things otherwise considered haram are perfectly fine.

I agree the government should be pressured, but I’d love to see how feminists and the like - who normally bend over backward to either excuse or ignore stuff like this on a daily basis - are doing what you claim.

But you cannot deny that this is directly related to the ideologies of Islam - you know, the ones conservatives have been warning about for at least the past seven years.

Watch “Finta”, read up on the Koran and you’ll see that treating women and girls as possessions, property and forcibly inforcing such teachings is condoned and applauded in Islamic teaching.

And we’re not supposed to point that out?

This is a devastating problem that radiates from within the Islamic religion, where it festers and spreads to infect the host governments of nations that are too kowtowed and weak to deal effectively with the religion of peace and love; thus, the carrot and stick diplomacy you advocate be applied against the Saudis will only prove effective when all Muslim nations are dealt with in the same manner, and Islam is held responsible for its teachings.

As a Catholic woman, my mother was denied the most blessed Sacrament because she divorced an unfaithful husband and refused to get an annulment (it probably felt weird to say a marriage never happened when she had a son).

It’s a denomination that contributes to poverty by denying poor families birth control even though there is not one thing in the Bible that says birth control is sinful or that only sex for procreation is acceptable.

It’s a denomination based on the idea that a select few can decide the future of the Church. Which would be fine if so many past Church officials and Popes weren’t so corrupt.

I think all Christian churches have their weak spots. I’m an Episcopalian for crying out loud. Our denomination was started by a murderer looking to divorce! But it’s unfair to say that my reasons for not liking Catholicism don’t make me like the person.
