Please tell me Drew Carey is joking
I like Drew Carey, but his kindergarten-level, 9/10 argument for open borders (”The Beckham Factor”) has to be the baddest joke I’ve heard all day. The punchline: We let a British soccer player into the country, so why not everyone else? Seriously:
Meanwhile, in Beckham’s native country, government officials on both sides of the aisle are having a grown-up debate about the economic impact of massive, low-skilled immigration.
PM Gordon Brown reacted to a Lords panel’s report today:
Prime Minister Gordon Brown should cap immigration because Britain hasn’t seen substantial economic benefits from the record influx of foreigners over the past decade, a panel of lawmakers said.
The House of Lords’ Economic Affairs Committee rejected the government’s argument that the arrival of 1.5 million new residents from overseas since 1997 has boosted economic growth. The cross-party panel largely endorsed the policies of the Conservative opposition.
The 84-page report’s findings call into question the Labour government’s open-door policy. Unlike Germany, France and Italy, Britain allowed residents of the 10 nations that joined the European Union in 2004 to work in the U.K. without restriction.
“We do not believe there has been any great economic benefit from this,” John Wakeham, a Conservative member of the House of Lords who leads the panel, told journalists. “It’s not a good idea to continue a policy that doesn’t make sense.”
Brown has already begun to retreat from Labour’s permissive immigration rules, imposing an Australian-style points-based system to encourage skilled workers to migrate and keep out ones with little education and training. He has also imposed new taxes on overseas workers and made it harder to earn citizenship in Britain.
“Most people in the City of London know that we benefited very substantially” from migration, Brown said today at a press conference in London. “But we want to get the balance right. We have introduced a point system that will restrict the numbers of people who can come into this country. We have taken most of the action that the House of Lords committee is suggesting.”

Who is asking Drew Carey about immigration policy in the first place?
Who could possibly care what the host of the Price is Right thinks on this issue?
Perhaps he could have the illegals on the show and give them all a car so they can drive home.

The operative word he used throughout this, this, tripe was “immigrant.”
They try to frame the debate as Americans hating immigrants because well Americans are hateful. I welcome all legal immigrants with open arms. However, when it comes to the illegal alien line jumpers -no way should they be given a free pass. Back of the line.
I like Drew Carey as one of the few Hollyweenies on the right side, but the invasion from Mexico is no joke.

Beckham had a job when he came…he didn’t have to loiter outside of the 7/11 all day waiting for work.
Did you know Carey is a Marine? Guess it just shows, brains can be fried at any age. Oh, his being a Libertarian is probably explanation enough for his views.

Drew Carey is more of a libertarian than a liberal.
I actually like him as host of TPIR.
By the way – very glad the blog is back to normal. The black was starting to bother my eyes.
I didn’t realize David Beckham came into the country in a windowless van, stole social security numbers, and invented fake documents to purchase a house and to stay in this country. Huh. I guess you learn something new every day.

I guess being in Hollywood so long has skewed his view. It’s easier when you don’t have to compete with the illegals, don’t remember any trying out as host for TPIR. I miss Bob Barker.

HUGE difference between David Beckham, who has a great skill and talent to offer and CAN SUPPORT HIMSELF, and a zero-skilled illegal who has nothing to offer and will suck on the resources provided by legal American taxpayers. Generalization of course, but Drew started it.

But Drew Carey and the rest of his ilk are unable to distinguish between legal and illegal, it’s that troublesome little il at the front of the word.
Personally, I’d welcome guest workers coming here in a highly controlled way, where taxes are paid and benefits received for contributions made. And law abiding behavior strictly required. But citizenship? For that you’ve got to go through the normal, time-consuming channels, not just move yourself and your extended family here from anyplace.

Beckham(no soccer fan here) is a legal resident and Julio Vasquez serving time for murder, rape, bank robbery and auto theft will be deported for being an ILLEGAL ALIEN after serving his sentence.

Meanwhile, for those who keep saying “A fence won’t work …”
There is a difference between legal and illegal immigration. Apparently, the distinction is lost on him. When many of one culture emigrate, there is less incentive to assimilate.
Shrug. Drew Carey is a libertarian. Libertarians, as a general rule, believe in the free, unfettered exchange of economic inputs, including labour, across international borders. And frankly, as long as there’s a security network in place to prevent known terrorists and criminals from entering the country, I for one see no problem with letting any labourers who want to, to work in America as legally documented guest workers.
Not wasting resources trying to keep harmless unskilled labourers out is, in my opinion, one necessary means of reforming the system to make it better able to catch the real bad guys we don’t want in the country. Making the system more efficient will do more for America’s border security than any fence (which I also agree should be built).
Vive la revolution! You want to see this class clowns future of America just come to LA. Take a good look this is your city of the future. It’s the same violent gang culture I have seen in Latin America for as long as I can remember. Can someone explain to me how the criminal gangs always end up running wild in Latino neighborhoods where are the good citizens willing to stand up and get rid of the gangs? You want a city where people are gunned down after a traffic accident, its already here. You want a city where there are over 100,000 gangsas to 7000 cops, we already have that. What will this guy have to say when bombs start going off like they do and have done all the time down in peaceful Latin America? Probably nothing, he will take off and leave the rest off us holding the bag. That’s the America we end up with if this guy gets his way we can see it happening already. His idiocy is dangerous, he’s an irresponsible adult, if you support any of these people in any way you might as well put a gun to your head its really not much different.
I’d say the vast majority of Americans are very welcoming of immigrants, if they immigrate here LEGALLY, like my descendants did.
Carey is being naive in this report because he isn’t factoring in the reconquista movement who seek to reclaim the American Southwest and restore it to its status as the north end of Mexico. Those near-rioters waving Mexican flags aren’t demanding the right to come and open Mexican restaurants, Drew.
I’ll make a deal with you Michelle – you tell me that Drew Carey is not a fat, stupid, no-talent dorkwad, and I’ll tell you he’s not joking.

Well, that was a waste of time. Who isn’t open to legal immigration? Look at his brilliant co-star from his show, Craig Ferguson, he did it the legal way and is probably more pro American than many that were born here.
Personally, I couldn’t give a hoot about Beckaman and his wife. The man played how many seconds of soccer for how much money? I don’t think he was worth it nor did it matter to me if they came here or not. I think the media hype was over the top for them.
PS-Michelle, I think you are highly intelligent, but I don’t think “baddest” is an actual word.

I like Drew Carey too, as a door stop. This carbon unit knows not the difference between legal and illegal. Is he perhaps pandering to the 20 million illegals in this country as TPIR viewers or perhaps this vacuum head is doing his improve of an April Fool.

At last, a Euro trend that doesn’t scare the pants off me; if only Pelosi and Reid could care enough about the country’s future to pick up on this idea, then maybe we’d get some meaningful immigration reform.
I’m pretty sure Becks isn’t an immigrant. If he was, he could have been celebrating with the US team in Poland instead of losing to the French this past week.
I think LA should have passed on Beckham and invested in a decent back line, you know, one that doesn’t let every midfield pass turn into a shot on goal. While I am aware this was supposed to be about illegal immigration, I needed to rant about that game for a bit. I now return you to your regularly scheduled rants:)
