Democrats, Radical Preachers, and Identity Politics
{A Guest Post by See-Dubya}
I was discussing the Obamessiah’s radical minister troubles with a friend over dinner, and he mentioned reading here that the Democrats had appointed a minister to be the CEO in charge of organizing their upcoming national convention. Curious about this Reverend Leah Daughtry, I googled around a bit. Interesting lady; as well as a Pentecostal preacher, she’s a former Clinton administration official and is now director of the Democratic outreach to try to poach religious voters away from the Republicans.
Apparently she’s also caused a bit of controversy within Democratic identity groups, as she has been accused of stirring up homophobia within the ranks. Whether the accusation are true or not, it’s just one more example of the Democrat Party tearing itself apart.
I’m sure y’all caught the coverage of the issue in GBM, the magazine for Gay People of Color, back in January, but just in case your subscription lapsed, here’s an excerpt, slightly bowdlerized for your protection:
In a fiery e-mail exchange obtained this week by the Blade, a senior official with the gay partisan group National Stonewall Democrats denounces a top DNC staffer, Leah Daughtry, for allegedly inciting anti-gay prejudice.
“Imagine what [DNC Chair Howard] Dean could do if people like Leah were confronted for their bigotry and fired,” writes the Stonewall Democrats official. The author’s name is redacted on the e-mails obtained by the Blade. The e-mails were sent in 2006.
Referring to Daughtry, the official says, “I think Samuel L. Jackson said it best when he said ‘I’m sick of these mother f[]n’ snakes on this mother f[]n’ plane.’ It may be time to drive the snakes from the DNC.”
There’s a lot more in that vein in the article; in a lawsuit against the DNC for discriminating against a gay employee named Donald Hitchcock, more allegations emerged against Daughtry of stirring up “black v. gay” politics to advance her career:
The attorney for Hitchcock then presents Bond with a series of e-mails on the topic. In one message bearing the subject “NAACP,” Yandura tells Minyon Moore, a longtime Democratic operative, he needs help.
“Unfortunately, I have heard again from several sources that it is Leah inside the DNC which has decided to make this a black vs. gay issue and not the gay caucus or black caucus leadership. This [is] a big problem and I have reached out to the NAACP leadership and need your help.”
Yandura is Hitchcock’s longtime partner. Moore, a former chief operating officer of the DNC and political affairs director for President Bill Clinton, serves as a senior adviser to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
In another e-mail … Yandura tells Marble: “Just so you know: I have ratcheted up the NAACP thing. I spoke to Minyon Moore yesterday who is very close to Leah Daughtry. I told Minyon that I was ashamed that Leah was making this a black vs. gay issue and using the NAACP as a weapon. I threatened to expose the entire thing to the national media if she did not stop.”
You know, GBM may be a fairly…unconventional source, and you’re probably not going to want to follow some of those links (note: their “sexologist” is nothing like Fox News’ “sexologist”!), but that whole article has a lot of insight into the behind-the-scenes dagger-in-the-spine politics of the DNC.
Those daggers keep flying, by the way. After the Blade (a gay DC paper) broke the story about the Stonewall emails mentioned in the first excerpt above, the Blade reporter who filed the report claimed in March that Daughtry sent two lawyers over to intimidate him:
According to Naff, Daughtry responded to the editorial by sending two lawyers to confront him and Blade publisher Lynne Brown, lodging what Naff calls “red-faced cursing and threatening of lawsuits.” While the lawyers said they represented Daughtry and not the DNC, Naff writes that DNC officials have nonetheless “gloated behind the scenes” that the incident compelled the Blade to stop writing about the Hitchcock suit.
I don’t know if Daughtry’s actually stirring up anti-gay sentiment for political purposes, or if she’s being slandered here, but I’m happy to help “expose the entire thing to the national media” and let them fight out the whole gay v. black, he-said-she-said kerfuffle in the public eye. I’ll be popping some popcorn.

Everybody has an opinion….and they all stink.
Now there’s a democrat ideal I can understand…”Gay is BAD…mmmkay.”
TEEEEEJ
The uninformed American people are getting a good glimpse at how the democrats are all about identity politics.
A little surprising that this Leah charachter is stirring up the hollyweird base. Waiting patiently for the Mayor from San Fransicko’s statement about this obvious slam against his city.
Big stinking deal. They will still vote Democrat no matter. Just like I am going to vote for McCain because – I have no other choice (unless you think with or without the nose plugs is a choice).
And after the Democrats have finished tearing themselves apart I wonder what they’ll look like? Pretty much like the Republican party now – a leader nobody wants, no light at the end of the tunnel, but the main similarity being that their leader will also be a Democrat.
Amazing that with over 300 million citizens, these are the best we can come up with to represent us? Shame.
I agree with Soap. What does any of it matter. They will stick with the “D” brand regardless.
By the way, Soap, in an attempt to humor myself and try to feel like I have a choice this election year, I was looking at the nose plug issue as my “choice”.
a typical DNC meeting:
Person 1: “you’re a towel!”
Person 2: “no, you’re a towel!”
Person 1: *storms out of room in tears*
I don’t think someone with Pat Robertson and James Dobson on their side should lecture me about radical preachers. First clean up your own house.
I don’t see anything in the prior six (6) posts lecturing you, lgm.
But, now that you bring it up, at what alter do you find yourself worshipping?
Robertson and Dobson are not on “my side”, lgm. I don’t go to their churches so they’re not on “my side”…
I wonder if anyone has ever mapped out a hierarchy of just what special interest group ranks where in the eyes of Democrats. Do homosexual rights trump issues of racism? Does being pro-life negate being a secularist?
It’d be a fascinating web of selectivity…
I’m thinking I might need both a paper bag over my head and a nose plug to vote for McCain.
Ralph Nader is starting to look like a viable protest vote……and, to show lgm how unbiased I am, I’m also considering writing in Spongebob Squarepants.
So lgm,
There are some “Christians” you do support. You make no bones about insulting them all. Then, a post comes up about a preacher who slams gays and you do not go after her?
Nice to see you have SOME standards. I am guessing it has everything to do with a (D).
And, for your information, Pat Robertson supported a liberal/pro-choice candidate for President so why are you bashing him? I would think you would be proud.
But, that candidate chose not to put the “D” after his name, so lgm can’t be proud of that.
Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan left the GOP, didn’t they??
Anyway,I think Leah may have been tapping into the anti-gay sentiments of the NAACP and the black community. (These sentiments are probably stirred up in their “churches” by their “ministers”. Black churches seem to worship a skin color more than God.)
There has always been a rift between the black and gay community leaders. Blacks don’t like gays because gays compare their rights struggle to the Civil Rights era.
(Also because they believe gays are the work of the devil and have no place in our country’s polka hills. Gays were the instrument the govt. used to spread the AIDS virus, and every politician and leader whom you disagree with is probably gay and a racist. Oh yeah and God created Adam ands Eve not Adam and Steve.
There are a lot of intelligent normal ) gays in the US. There are groups called “Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians” and “Gays for Guns”. (No, Log Cabin doesn’t count as a normal group- they are LIBERALS. Did you know they gave Andrew Sullivan a Lifetime Achievement Award/??)
The shrill, leftist, hippie, nudist, ones that give us a bad name. You can find many examples on Zombietime.
Leah is stirring up internal prejudice for political means. That is disgusting and immoral.
LGM,, what sin did Dobson do? you never yet tell me what abortion clinics that are being bombed daily but someday I hope you will. Dobson and Robertson will never be popular because they follow Christ and He Himself would not be popular today because He would not accept other religions as the Truth. Anyway Wright doesn’t ever get close to preaching the Gospel of Christ.
This isn’t much of a surprise. Being gay myself, most of the anti-gay rhetoric I see comes from the left side of the political spectrum. I’m sure that many people here have noticed that to disagree with a lot of liberals is to invite all manner of anti-gay epithets.
I veiw gay leftists as I do battered spouses who keep returning to their tormentors, claiming “He loves me, that’s why he hits me.” My sympathy for them and their oh-so-pwecious widdle feewings is very limited.
Tell you what: when one of them is hired as the director of the Republican outreach to try to poach religious voters away from the Democrats, or as McCain’s racist spiritual mentor, I will take your advice.
Secondly, if the Dems win in November, it will all be “our house” won’t it?

I do. Does anyone else here think lgm needs to be lectured about radical, liberal preachers…and the democrat politicians who cover for them?
This is the only joy I get out of this years election cycle is watching the Democrats tearing them selves apart. The troubling part is when I sit back and think of what any of the three stooges we have been handed as front runners will do if they win as POTUS.

That would be John Hagee.
Everyone: criticizing liberal ministers is fine, but criticizing conservative ministers is anti Christian?
Black Anger: JUSTIFIED!
White Anger: TREATABLE!
I don’t think someone who makes it their mission in life to castigate Christianity and trash Christians should be “lecturing” anyone about religion. Perhaps, you should follow your own advice first. Otherwise, bigotry isn’t excluse to the those “big, bad Religious Right” folks.
What do you have against Christians anyway? What “wrong” did they commit against you? Or does their mere existence bother you?
Then again, I’m sure you’re fine with muslim extremism in all its different shades of hatred too.
As a Baptist, Reverend Pat Robertson and Dr. James Dobson are on my side – and I am proud to have them.
Neither man has done a thing to be ashamed of – Rev. Robertson’s ministry has led numerous people to Christ, without shouting obscenities and anti-American invective at them; fed, clothed, and provided med. care to people around the country and the world; and educated tens of thousands at Robertson’s university. And as for poor Dr. Dobson (a child psychologist), he has worked for the improvement of society by offering sound advice on child rearing and family togetherness from a Christian perspective.
Once again lgm you have become the subject of a thread by one posting your message in the wrong blog and two your message is totally irrelevant, I’m typing this slow for ease of understanding, Robertson and Dobson are not staff members of the RNC as Leah Daughtry is a top DNC staffer. Just like you, Robertson and Dobson are just plain old republicans. This does not take a math professor to understand.
Now, now…Let’s all leave LGM alone. He/She is only reading from the talking points the Media/DNC provides. Let’s not encourage any rational or independent thought…mmmkay?
Jeremiah Wright: Obama’s admitted personal friend and personal minister for 23 years, recipient of over $20,000 from Obama, credited for spiritual advisement in both of Obama’s NYT bestsellers, appointed to a campaign committee of Obama’s, supports Obama for President, has never apologized for his racist and hateful remarks, but rather sells them on DVD for profit.
Leah Daughtry:Democrat appointed CEO in charge of organizing the DNC national convention, former Clinton administration official, director of the Democratic outreach to try to poach religious voters away from the Republicans.
Pat Robertson: Nationally apologized on 9/14/01 for his apparent agreement with Jerry Falwell’s remarks regarding moral decay and 9/11 on 9/13/01…just one day later.
Jerry Falwell:Nationally apologized for his remarks regarding moral decay and 9/11 on 9/13/01…just one day later.
James Dobson: No affiliation or appointments to the Republican Party, does not support John McCain.
Once again lgm, your attempts at moral equivalence are horrible, and embarrassing for a man who claims an academic discipline as exact as mathematics.
AHHHH, the all knowing lgm has spoken (again). This time it is about a subject he knows a great deal about – Christians.
Oh to have SouthernBoy back. At least he was funny.
Where to begin?
You will find many here who are willing to unload on Pat Robertson because of who he threw his support behind. Your lack of facts is nothing new. Also, idiot, you do not speak for any Christian here – especially me. Pat Robertson lost all of my respect when he chose a liberal to support for the POTUS and, I am not alone. Then again, you do not pay attention unless you are privy to some “double secret new and improved evidence” (against a conservative).
You are saying that a liberal minister who is anti-gay it is okay – right? No, only a “conservative minister” who is anti-gay will burn in hell – right?
So, you are a Christian who is offended beacuse we do not critize a “conservative minister”?
There is one thing I am greatly thankful for, I am not your brain. Your head must hurt to keep such garbage in it. I would compare it to a landfill but, a landfill is useful.
Most liberal “preachers” are ignorant of the bible. Ask them what they think God’s requirements are to gain access to heaven and you will get nothing but gibberish. They are clueless.
DBNinKY said (#23):
There are people who say the same for Reverend Wright. In the interest of Christian understanding, maybe you could learn what people object to in Robertson and the good works of Wright.
On-my-soap-box (#27):
Rudeness and insult are excusable if they are clever and funny. Calling someone “poophead” stopped getting laughs in the third grade.
Likewise, I don’t think people with Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Jerry Wright, Ariana Huffington, David Brock, and oh so many others on their side, should presume to have moral superiority over members of the party of Lincoln.
Let’s see, the Emancipation Declaration, check! Republicans, with little help from lgm’s morally superior party, passed the Civil Rights Act…check! Republicans have always believed in giving a hand out to those in need, not keeping them dependent, not Democrats.
The Republicans have tried to maintain a “color-blind” society, not the morally superior Democrats, who throw color or sexual orientation into the mix every chance they get. It was Republicans who pushed fought to eliminate segregation in public schools, but if the Democrats support the more than 60 “black only” colleges and universities, why not support “white only” universities?
Do Republicans have a Congressional White Caucus? Do they support a White Pride Parade? How about a United Caucasian College Fund? The answer is no.
If the Republicans EVEN suggested any of the above, it would be termed “racist,” yet the Democrats promote and support the “segregated” members of their “Superior Moral Authority” Party of Clinton, Jackson, Sharpton, Wright, etc, etc, etc.
The Party of Lincoln is NOT the Party that ALWAYS has to make it an ISSUE of sex or race, that would be the tactic of the standardless Democrat Party.
Liberal Ministers ARE anti-Christian if you take into account anything “reverend” Wright says.
TEEEEEJ
Well, you would know as you are the master. I am here everyday and have yet to see someone enjoy – let alone – laugh at your silly and offensive remarks.
Here are the terms of use:
Your constant thread jacking, lying, and Christian bashing clearly violate these terms.
To be honest, I fully expect to get the boot before you because one day, I am really going to uncork on you pal and I will likly get banned. On that day, I will make it worth my while.
Further proof that black Americans will choose the Democrats over God any day. If Leah really had strong Christian convictions about homosexuality or any other moral issue, she would be in the Republican party trying to work towards positive change for America. Not pandering to the Democrat agenda. Is she crazy? The Democrat party is by and large pro-gay, so how in the world does she expect her anti-gay sentiments to go over well with liberals?? Black Americans seem to always be “black agenda first” and everything else second. How else can it be explained why there are so many blacks active in Christian churches but yet blacks are predominately liberal Democrats?? And for 40 plus years of consistently voting Democrat, nothing much has changed for the better for blacks in America–do they ever consider why that is? Even with Bill Clinton, their “first black President” in office for 8 years, what changed for the better for blacks in America? Is crime down in black communities? Are the numbers up among black college grads? Is there less poverty? Less welfare?
Please don’t call that guy that hates everything conservative a poophead.
He is an idiot and he should be ignored at all times.
self-edit excluse= exclusive. Mind those adjectives!
How dare you use facts? Don’t you know using innuendo and religious bigotry will only get lgm’s attention?
Keep up the good work! Besides being a Math teacher, lgm is now a Religous educator as well. We already know what he’s done using a little Wikipedia and little to no knowledge of History.
sarc off/
Did I miss your reply, lgm?
If you do, you have to make it memorable, Soap. But, I will take the bet that it goes the other way and lgm is booted pretty soon.
Is he ordained? If so, by whom?
BrianNY, it’s the “New Math” – if that’s what it’s still called. No answer was “wrong”…
I guess everyone in the Democratic Party needs to understand their place in the Socialist food chain.
Of course, if they weren’t in denial, they’d worry about real threats, like how fundamentalist Muslims treat gays and women in countries where they hold sway.

It’s in the original post. Dems are bad because of these radical preachers they hang out with.
Show us 1 post.
HHHAAAAAHHAAAHHAAAAAAAAHHAAAAA
You have condemned all Christians every chance you get and now you claim we are lecturing YOU because “Dems are bad because of these radical preachers they hang out with”?
You, the idiot, who condemn Christian organizations for doing good around the world because they get a proportionate share of monies from the government?
No. We call Dems to condemn the racist, vile, hurtful… things these preachers are saying. The Dems are silent about the tripe these people are saying unless – like you – they are coming to their defense.
If a black preacher calls JESUS a poor black man (and he was Jewish), that is not only a lie but is racial on its face. That is BO’s pastor. Forget he called on GOD to “damn America” and has said worse things than this. Where is the outcry from the Dems (and you)? You are quick to condemn a conservative Pastor.
What is your beef with Robertson? What did he do to receive your attacks? He is in support of some liberal causes (supported Rudy)? That should make you a fan of his. rev Wright talks about JESUS so, it can’t be that. Give us a clue oh clueless one.
Soaps YOUR my hero! If you get banned, I want to play and get banned right along side you for playing “hackatroll”
Who knows, maybe we can ask Shaquelle O’Neil about the simuliar game is subjected too every night called “Hackashaq”

You know, Rusty gets a bad rap being called a troll. Most of the time, Rusty makes a good point. We disagree and at times it is good and at times it gets ugly. He lies a little (going to wish Michelle a Happy St. Pats day because he can get behind that and going to congrat her for having her work read on the House floor – to name a few) but, he is nowhere near the caliber lgm is. To be fair, I would be a moby troll of lgm’s caliber over at Dkos. I would also be banned the first day!

Don’t waste your time with the moron, just pray for the young minds he is destroying in the university he is infesting.
I believe he is on his way out of this site. Michelle sees very well what he’s doing.
I can’t get that ugly picture of him out of my head, who the hell posted that crap? It should have came with a warning.
I would be inclined to agree. Rusty may hold different views but he will hang around and debate those more openly than lgm.
lgm blurts insanities and runs, until he drives by again and decides to inject more of the same.

You know lgm, I resent you slandering the good name of James Dobson. He is a fine man and a good Christian. He has more character and kindness (two things you obviously know nothing about) in his little finger than you have in your whole body.
Jim C
LGM you still are ignoring my comments but then you again would condemn Jesus Christ if He walked this earth. You would not be able to go along with his non-diversity Gospel. You can blame the preachers but you have no scripture to back it up. So where is your evidence?
I’m a lesbian, and I’m conservative. I absolutely refuse to vote Democrap. And I find it mortifying that so much of the GLBT community is so liberal.
Maybe that’s why I can’t find a date…

It’s all about the hypocrisy, LGM.
The people who defend Rev. Wright say his critics are attempting to demonize him, and as an extension, Obama, by taking the Rev.’s words out of context from the sermon in which they were meant to shock and punctuate certain elements of the sermon’s message. Yet these same defenders have never missed a chance to take out of context the words of conservatives like Reverends Falwell and Robertson and Dr. Robertson in order to marginalize them as racist caricatures drawn straight from a Tennessee Williams’ play – buffoons without a brain among the three of them.
It’s hypocrisy at its apex!
The photo of Reverend Leah Daughtry gives me the creeps every time I look at it. I’ve caught fish that have more compassionate eyes.
So you post your thoughts and giggle to yourself? That is the kind of stuff that gets you a room with cushioned walls and jacket that buckles in the back.
Dems are bad because they unapologetically and hypocritically have the likes of Wright as a spiritual advisor. I don’t believe that Robertson et al. were ever on any Republican staff or in an advisory role.
Add to that the fact that the candidate in question has a TWENTY YEAR
Sorry, hit the enter button by mistake.
To continue:
Add to that the fact that the candidate in question has a TWENTY YEAR relationship with Wright, and donated lavishly to the church of Wright, yet can actually stand there and claim that he was unaware of Wright’s statements and belief requires, to borrow the words of another Dem candidate, the willing suspension of disbelief. Heck, Wright and his church were so proud of his oratory, that they actually sold his sermons on DVD.
