Obama’s cheesesteak snobbery: Shades of Jawn “Swiss” Carry

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 4, 2008 09:00 AM

I’m flying out of Harrisburg, PA this morning, but I just had to pop in as a Philly-born girl to say my peace about Barack Obama dissing the cheesesteak.

Yes. Dissing the cheesesteak. Yo. What is he thinking?

The Messiah has already been brought down a notch here in PA by his pathetic bowling score. He can’t really afford more public relations hits to his Everyman credentials, such as they are. But it appears he didn’t want to risk a boneheaded John Kerry moment with the Philly cheesesteak.

Remember?

Flashback…John Kerry demonstrates how not to eat a cheesesteak:

kerrybites.jpg

If Sen. John F. Kerry’s presidential aspirations melt like a dollop of Cheez Whiz in the sun, the trouble may well be traced to an incident in South Philadelphia on Monday.

There, the Massachusetts Democrat went to Pat’s Steaks and ordered a cheesesteak — with Swiss cheese. If that weren’t bad enough, the candidate asked photographers not to take his picture while he ate the sandwich; shutters clicked anyway, and Kerry was caught nibbling daintily at his sandwich — another serious faux pas.

“It will doom his candidacy in Philadelphia,” predicted Craig LaBan, food critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, which broke the Sandwich Scandal. After all, Philly cheesesteaks come with Cheez Whiz, or occasionally American or provolone. But Swiss cheese? “In Philadelphia, that’s an alternative lifestyle,” LaBan explained.

Obama out-dorked Kerry by completely passing up a cheesesteak at the Italian Market and instead sampling some fancy foreign ham. Well, la-di-dah. Via the Philadelphia Daily News:

What, no whiz?

Sen. Barack Obama sampled $100 ham, but didn’t chow down on a cheesesteak during a visit to the Italian Market yesterday.

During a half-hour tour of the market, Obama sampled wares at Claudio Specialty Food and DiBruno Brothers – where he noshed on a Spanish ham that retails for $99.99 a pound.

Staff at DiBruno’s told him the ham only recently became available because it was previously barred by the FDA.

“All I know is it tastes good,” Obama said. As good as whiz with onions?

In fact, neither Obama nor Sen. Hillary Clinton, his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, has made the traditional stop at South Philly cheesesteak establishments Pat’s or Geno’s.

But Obama last night told a crowd of supporters gathered at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, “I’m going to get a cheesesteak the next time I come.”

One local observer thinks both Obama and Hillary’s decision to shun the city’s most famous cheesesteak joint may have something to do with their ideological allergy to Geno’s stand that customers speak English:

“I think some of the places that were must-stops, aren’t must stops any more,” said political analyst Larry Ceisler. “I think that the Kerry experience was certainly a bad experience and I think the candidates look at that. Also, I don’t think they want to take the chance of the immigration issue.”

Yeah, God forbid a Democrat politician be seen with a small business owner who thinks his customers should speak English!

So, Obama promises to eat a cheesesteak “next time?”

Too late, Mr. Dainty Fingers. You only get one chance to make a first impression. The odor of elitism is like onion breath: Quick to acquire, hard to get rid of.

Not that Obama would know anything about onion breath…

this illustrates how catty these democrats are. they can’t – even for a second – drop politics from the brain. everything has a political motive. the people who are going to Geno’s aren’t doing so because of political persuasion…they’re doing it to get a good damn steak…do democrats understand this?

People “from Philly” go to Jim’s. People “from Philly” go to Tony Luke’s. People “from Philly” go to Pagano’s off of 76th and Ogontz.

It’s not about being a ‘must-stop’, it’s about showing the people that you are like them. That’s the whole bowling thing. Everybody bowls. The cheesesteak thing is about everybody being able to say ‘hey I went to Gino’s and had a cheesesteak too’. It is an opportunity for the candidates to connect with the voters.

But none of the voters would identify with a exotic ham, or swiss cheese. And they might not have heard of the restaurant that they went to instead of the more popular one.

It just makes me wonder how many Democrats would be in DC if it weren’t for the favorable press that they get. It’s not a big deal, but it’s really a no brainer. . . like the 37 in bowling.

I have to give Barack a pass on this one. I cannot stand Obama and I would NEVER vote for him. But if he doesn’t want to eat cheese whiz, who cares. Here in Central Illinois we have something called a “horse shoe” sandwich. Basically you take the nastiest piece of institutional grade meat you can find, cover it in extra greasy french fires and smother it in cheese whiz. It’s disgusting. I tried one once and would never touch one of those things again. Also, it’s important to remember that Obama is from Chicago, which in spite of everything else that’s wrong with the city, still has some of the best food on earth, including everything from Chicago hot dogs, gyros and stuffed pizza, to top notch 5 star dining. So I can completely understand why he wouldn’t be all that impressed by cheese whiz.

you don’t eat a cheese steak like a ‘delicate little flower’ (in my best City Chicken [SouthPark] voice). you grab it, close it, getting all the cheese on the palms of your hand, and bite off the entire butt of the sandwich. greese and cheese will ooze – this is a good thing. the onions will fall out – again, good.

i should market a Philly cheese steak survival kit:

    2 – wet naps
    3 – breath mint

The RDA is in the process of converting the vacant homes (which are now demolished)into new housing which is only going improve the area further.

Obama went to an elite prep school in Hawaii that is known as a place where rich haolie kids go to be pampered. These rich kids don’t have to worry about being around native Hawaiian kids. And Obama fit right in. He never went to a public school in his life. It was prep school, Ivy League and then a white shoe law firm in Chicago where every lawyer went to prep school. And yet the MSM will protect Obama. John Kerry eating a Philly cheese steak was hilarious. Everyone knew Kerry only felt at home eating Frech Food at Chantilly.
