Hillary strategist Mark Penn is out
Adios, Mark Penn. Maggie Williams, on the other hand, remains despite profiting from the subprime lenders her boss is always bashing. Go figure.
Mark Penn, the pollster and senior strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential bid, left the campaign Sunday after it was disclosed he met with representatives of the Colombian government to help promote a free trade agreement Clinton opposes.
“After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign,” campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement released Sunday. “Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.”
Communications director Howard Wolfson and pollster Geoff Garin will craft strategy for the campaign going forward, Williams said.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Penn, who serves as chief executive of public relations giant Burson-Marsteller, met with Colombian officials March 31 to help craft strategy to move the Colombian Free Trade agreement through Congress. Penn later issued a statement apologizing for the meeting, calling it an “error in judgment.”
“Senator Clinton was disappointed that meetings with Colombians had occurred. She is a strong opponent of the trade deal,” said a Clinton campaign officials speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not given authority to speak publicly. “Over the course of the weekend he recognized he needed to step aside as chief strategist.”
Maybe Hillary will bring back the Latina queena.

Wow. Hillary doesn’t support our allies in Colombia, and Barry O is endorsed by frickin’ FARC.
Uribe is one of our few constant allies in South America, and Hillary wants to sell him down the river…for what? Is that what liberals call “rebuilding America’s image abraod”–telling the people who are on our side to take a hike? That’s a great message. Support America, get kicked in the nards.
Are there some Hawaiian coffee farmers who are kicking in big bucks to the Hillary campaign or something?

She who can’t manage her own staff thinks she can run the country?
SHOCK!
Whoda thunk you couldn’t trust a Clintonista??
Sure doesn’t say much about Hillary’s executive ability. Either she didn’t know Penn was representing Colombia, or she didn’t care. One might ask why.
It’s just like Obama’s little aside to Canada…don’t take it seriously, it’s just campaign rhetoric. What do these people believe in?
Bring back the “Latina Queena”? Somewhat sarcastic this PM, aren’t we Michelle?
More generally, this is yet another indicator of the Dems eating their own in this campaign. There is a waiting line of replacements, of course, but the overall trend is toward self-destruction.
See – Dub: Your post about the LA Times / illegal enforcement would have been indeed coffee spewing without your warning. Good job filling in and good reading.

She sure has managerial experience. The problem is, it is all bad. Ready to go on day one.
Why would that dim-wit oppose a treaty with Columbia? Is she opposed to the anti-drug aid package? Is she in bed (so to speak) with Chavez? Or is it that she just hates President Bush so much that whatever he would propose she must automatically oppose?
More like:
Not sure about Hawaii, but maybe Cuba? More like her style.
Zorro, Plan Colombia started under Slick’s administration. Maybe this is her way of apologizing for that to her liberal friends.
Or maybe she doesn’t like anything with “free trade” in the title.
She is so odd.
As everyone else has said, what Penn is doing in Columbia is a good thing. Trading with them while not trading with Venezuela is probably the best weapon we have against Chavez.
Penn was smart to leave too. He won’t get much else from the campaign (especially when/if Hillary loses), and he needs to keep his reputation in tact if he wants to be an international broker.
This just goes to show the stark difference between the D and the R.
exactly right and well said. It amazes me how out of touch the D’s are because of their hatred.
As we get closer to the election, folks seem to be taking up their own agenda to throw poor Hill under the other buses.
Michelle, with that “Latina Queena” remark, seems like you could use a dose of sarcasma! (from sarcasma*dot*net)
So, by opposing Plan Columbia which funds the anti-drug section of the Colombian military, the main beneficiary would be FARC and cocaine smugglers.
Penn’s firm was on the “right” side of the issue. Hillary, as usual, is left appearing to support our enemies.
It appears “she who must not be named” can’t control her own campaign staff at least we are finding out what a disaster she would be trying to run her cabinet as POTUS. Of course the “empty suit” and the “grumpy old man” aren’t much of an improvement. Baring a miracle (I continue to pray for one) this country is so screwed come November.
Shucks! He was so talented and helped to accentuate all of Hillary’s….er…er…double chins?
A rejected, dejected, woman with no true skills other than ‘misstating’ most of what she has done in life. And she is Presidential material? What a sad world we live in when people believe in people like her. Mark Penn should have left sooner….oh well?
Get a clue. What Mark Penn is the cultural norm on the left. Each individual is empowered to pursue their own agenda – and screw the leader’s agenda.
Haven’t we just gone through 30 years of every crapweasal bureaucrat taking it upon themselves to disclose top secret information to sabotage national policies or programs they disagreed with? Seems like everyone on the left side of the spectrum has loudly encouraged such behavior because it served their purposes. So it is a case of (finally) reaping what you sow.
Expect this to continue even if Hillary or Barack occupies the White House – they have spilled enough blood to have created a cadre of venegance minded bureaucrats and they will see to it that chaos reigns supreme.
Seems as if everyone except the rats (Carville, Wolfson) is deserting this sinking ship!
What this really means: Given the choice between leaving the campaign or suffering Arkancide, in the interest of health Mark Penn left town and went into hiding.
Rearranging the deck stewards on the Titanic, are we?
Given B Hussein’s racist rev, Hillary should be far ahead of Obama the racist. But, like McCain she is clueless and out of touch with reality.
I think that qualifies for a…holy crap!
Is she flipping tiddly winks now to see what she does next?
Not exactly up to the level of what we might call, Roveian.
Look what you’ve done, I’m meeeeeeeeeeelting!
R.M.S. Clintanic
Of course Mark Penn is out…jeez, going against the grain, negotiating with Columbia, while others in the Democrat Party have been secretly (or not) negotiating with Columbia’s arch-rival/enemy in the region, Chavez and FARC. As is usual, not everyone was on the same page (not congressional page, snort.) Seems reasonable to me…
The degradation of our political process has left me dumbfounded. Out of 300 million Americans, these are our choices for the highest public office in the land? Our enemies don’t need weapons of mass destruction when we are happily firing off weapons of self-destruction.
That’s what Patti Solis Doyle calls herself.
Actually, THIS may be the real reason he left.
DLTDHYOTWO.
By electing Bush twice, Clinton twice and rejecting Tom Tancredo, Americans pretty-much dug their own grave. Now, the question is how deep? Hillary/Obama or McCain deep? Does it really matter?

*sigh* This is so true. I’ve always heard it said that we get the government we deserve, but nobody deserves this!!
…okay… maybe Bezerkley and a few other areas deserve this. But not the rest of us!!
Maybe it’s 10 MILLION reasons…
The women that post on this site have to be as offended as most women in American have to be that Hillary has been acclaimed as the “smartest women in the world” huh?
Anyone that believes that tripe is or was obviously delusional.
I’m luvin this…bubba got caught, he is squiring like he has never done before. I’m not so sure he’s not scared poopless. He’s made promises it looks like he will not be able to keep… now ain’t that sumpin. Can’t help but luv it…hey, Judy, justice.
Here’s the way i see it from a lyman’s point of view. We’re done with the destructive policies and actions of the Clintoons, about damn time…(gd Ross Perot). Obadman is a fraud from the get go…he is a racist, communist elitist. The American public, sheeple included will not allow this clown in office. McShamanesty will be the in the WH, sorry to say. Then we have to harp, push, pull and threaten with our votes to keep some semblance of sanity in our country until 2012 or a conservative VPtakes office after unfortunate death of the president…god forbid.
If all the so called political pun dents can be wrong 90 %of the time I too have had a vision.
I have to stop drinking before i post or i have to post before i start drinking…what a quandary i find myself in…where is the goberment i need help.
I wonder if Penns exit means he forfeits the 2-3 million Clinton owes his firm.
Right down the line of American trade there has been the employment of the Bush version of free trade that is code for screw America agreements. The other side of the coin is fair trade. Bush wants free trade. Many in congress want fair trade. Mark Penn might have been a free trade guy in a fair trade camp. Off with his head.
Note: perhaps because Columbia is an ally they should also go the screw America benefits.
Queen: “…and another one bites the dust.”
My first reaction to this was, “He asked to leave only because he was caught.”
But Tennessee Dave may have really hit the nail on the head; Mark Penn moved on BEFORE he could be Vince-Fosterized!

Bingo. Which leads me to another question: Did HRC really not know what he was doing? Or was this one of those Do as I say, not as I do moments?
Like she verbally has the stance to appease the democratic-bloc of Union members, but she knows that this agreement is good for the national interest, so she was trying to support it behind the scenes and let Congress take the fall for getting it approved?
If it’s the latter, what other October Surprises™ to we have waiting for us from the democratic nominee? That once a democrat is elected we’ll have serious peace talks with Hamas or Al-Queta and have peace in our time by late January? (except for the fact that we’ll have government sponsored and Sharia approved universal health care, with only halal foods allowed or served in public schools, etc…)
Was Shrillary before the Columbian Free Trade Agreement before she was against it? Is this like NAFTA? Inquiring minds really do want to know!
Inept, over-priced bullies never go away – they just fade into the background to keep Billy company.
Mark Penn is a genius who undoubtedly arranged this matter to allow himself to get clear of the sinking ship and to afford himself plausible deniability for his large role as architect of a vessel that was unable to withstand what has been undeniably a perfect political storm.
(It pleases me that Hillary, who is nothing if not a skilled and disciplined pol, is being sucked under and denied the prize by pure ill fortune. She has been paralyzed by the Barak candidacy, every avenue of response or attack blocked! Couldn’t happen to a nicer witch! She will spend the rest of her life in righteous rage at the injustice of it! I love it.)
