Hillary strategist Mark Penn is out

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 6, 2008 07:16 PM

Adios, Mark Penn. Maggie Williams, on the other hand, remains despite profiting from the subprime lenders her boss is always bashing. Go figure.

Mark Penn, the pollster and senior strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential bid, left the campaign Sunday after it was disclosed he met with representatives of the Colombian government to help promote a free trade agreement Clinton opposes.

“After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign,” campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement released Sunday. “Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.”

Communications director Howard Wolfson and pollster Geoff Garin will craft strategy for the campaign going forward, Williams said.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Penn, who serves as chief executive of public relations giant Burson-Marsteller, met with Colombian officials March 31 to help craft strategy to move the Colombian Free Trade agreement through Congress. Penn later issued a statement apologizing for the meeting, calling it an “error in judgment.”

“Senator Clinton was disappointed that meetings with Colombians had occurred. She is a strong opponent of the trade deal,” said a Clinton campaign officials speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not given authority to speak publicly. “Over the course of the weekend he recognized he needed to step aside as chief strategist.”

Maybe Hillary will bring back the Latina queena.

See-Dubya comments:

Wow. Hillary doesn’t support our allies in Colombia, and Barry O is endorsed by frickin’ FARC.

Uribe is one of our few constant allies in South America, and Hillary wants to sell him down the river…for what? Is that what liberals call “rebuilding America’s image abraod”–telling the people who are on our side to take a hike? That’s a great message. Support America, get kicked in the nards.

Are there some Hawaiian coffee farmers who are kicking in big bucks to the Hillary campaign or something?

More generally, this is yet another indicator of the Dems eating their own in this campaign. There is a waiting line of replacements, of course, but the overall trend is toward self-destruction.

As everyone else has said, what Penn is doing in Columbia is a good thing. Trading with them while not trading with Venezuela is probably the best weapon we have against Chavez.

Penn was smart to leave too. He won’t get much else from the campaign (especially when/if Hillary loses), and he needs to keep his reputation in tact if he wants to be an international broker.

This just goes to show the stark difference between the D and the R.

exactly right and well said. It amazes me how out of touch the D’s are because of their hatred.

Get a clue. What Mark Penn is the cultural norm on the left. Each individual is empowered to pursue their own agenda - and screw the leader’s agenda.

Haven’t we just gone through 30 years of every crapweasal bureaucrat taking it upon themselves to disclose top secret information to sabotage national policies or programs they disagreed with? Seems like everyone on the left side of the spectrum has loudly encouraged such behavior because it served their purposes. So it is a case of (finally) reaping what you sow.

Expect this to continue even if Hillary or Barack occupies the White House - they have spilled enough blood to have created a cadre of venegance minded bureaucrats and they will see to it that chaos reigns supreme.

Bingo. Which leads me to another question: Did HRC really not know what he was doing? Or was this one of those Do as I say, not as I do moments?

Like she verbally has the stance to appease the democratic-bloc of Union members, but she knows that this agreement is good for the national interest, so she was trying to support it behind the scenes and let Congress take the fall for getting it approved?

If it’s the latter, what other October Surprises™ to we have waiting for us from the democratic nominee? That once a democrat is elected we’ll have serious peace talks with Hamas or Al-Queta and have peace in our time by late January? (except for the fact that we’ll have government sponsored and Sharia approved universal health care, with only halal foods allowed or served in public schools, etc…)
