Sunday meditation: Tribute to Charlton Heston
A giant has passed. He will be greatly missed. R.I.P.

“To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support. Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity.
We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.
No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country. In his own words, “I have lived such a wonderful life! I’ve lived enough for two people.”
A private memorial service will be held. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Motion Picture and Television Fund:

Hollywood turned its back on one of its biggest icons for the sin of becoming Republican and of supporting gun rights. Of course, while Hollywood rejected Heston for his stand on the 2nd Amendment, it churned out more and more films dedicated to mass shootings and indiscriminate violence. Heston couldn’t have fired more bullets in his entire lifetime than in a year of Hollywood movies.
Those ironies and hypocrisies amount to little against Heston’s lifetime of work, on stage and screen as well as in supporting gun rights. Even Democrats these days don’t argue for gun control, chastised by national elections and common sense. The Supreme Court appears ready to acknowledge what Heston had long insisted — that the Constitution guarantees an individual right to gun ownership. His dedication to the Constitution may well be his greatest work.
But of course, it won’t be his most memorable. Whether in classic movies like The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, in science fiction like Planet of the Apes or Soylent Green, or in later, quieter appearances in Tombstone, True Lies, and self-deprecating cameos in Wayne’s World 2 and the remake of Planet of the Apes, Heston has left a remarkable and diverse body of work that will remain with us long after his ankle-biting critics have returned to Oblivion.
Godspeed, Mr. Heston.

There was a story about the hand made gun built for Charlton Heston, prompting the “from my cold, dead hands” words. The gun is quite a work of art, and so was Mr. Heston.
And they forgot his work in the 60s civil rights movement.

Another true American Hero has passed. He will be sorely missed.
His movies soared with brilliance compared to the 99.9% of the crap Hollywood puts out now.

I’ve had to rally to Mr. Heston’s defense in the pages of the Denver Post where the liberal miscreants have shown their true character…or lack therein. R.I.P.

#1…Actually, as a member of the National Rifle Association, Mr. Heston uttered those famous words in front of the membership. Truly, heartfelt sentiments we should all emulate.
I don’t think we’re building actors like him anymore. And probably not people who do so many visibly grand things in radically different spheres as did Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston. (I think we have people who are just as good, but are less visible or prominent.)
RIP Charlton Heston, may you enjoy your reunion with your fellow old-school actors and actresses, and may you family be comforted.
Another man gone from our planet. They are so few and far between. All we have left are the “pretty boys” and the wussies. We lost the women decades ago and have only whiney females left.

Charlton Heston was a visionary. He gave us the blueprint for fighting these leftists we see and sometimes don’t see today, its called the Omega Man. Hey when I was young everyone wanted their chance at being like the Omega Man. Rebuilding the Earth by machine gunning zombies, ah, what a life. When we are all done with that we can initiate the Soylent Green solution. Of course some of you might like to think that you are living on the Planet of the Apes and I cant argue with that. Heston and his peers, John Wayne, Clark Gable, Cary Grant Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Errol Flynn (the list goes on almost forever) have left with the greatest collection of visual history we could have ever asked for. Just think, if these men had not existed we would be stuck with the pipsqueaks of today, what a horrid thought. The great thing is they are never really completely gone they are always only a click away. God bless Charlton, God bless em all.

There sure was a difference between him and the likes of Sean Penn,Tim Robbins,and the Rosies of the world.I never saw a picture of him from an arrest or getting out of a car with no underwear.A truly fine American.
I agree with the posts. He was a great actor and will be sorely missed. The great ones are either gone, or will be retired now. The Hollywood actors today are more interested in trashing the U.S., than in good acting. This is why my wife and I have given up on going to theatres. Plots and acting are so poor now, that they have to fill the film with sex, blood and gore, and violence to get someone to sit and watch it. It’s a wonder that they don’t see that “G” films sell the best, and the “anti-military” films bust. Religious films are either political correct and/or heavily critisized. Historical films are horribly inaccurate to project an anti-US theme or someone’s opinion. R.I.P. Mr. Heston.

The Sunday Mpls Star Tribune printed his obit on page A12 with just one paragraph among others in small font. I don’t know what to say at this point, I am so angry.

Goodbye Mr. Heston you will be missed. A man of his caliber is hard to find in the liberal wasteland of Hollywood today. It would be interesting to witness his meeting in heaven with some of the great characters from the Judeo-Christian history he portrayed during his career. elpresidente, you’re going to run into “trash” all the time, especially when they can post anonymously. It wouldn’t surprise me to find most of them as kids, playing on their parents’ computer, thinking they’re cool. I ignore them. With any society you will find some that despise those who do well and succeed, believing in morals and values that made this nation great. Like ants at a picnic, they’re always around. Heston will remain a great actor no matter what the “trash” say.
#38–I know, but it is always good to point out the “trash” to those who say this stuff is the exclusive domain of a few fringe folks on the Internet.
When the Columbine shootings happened in 1999 (I’m in Colorado), my father–an NRA member–was verbally assaulted by those opposing the 2nd Amendment, and Mr. Heston himself was attacked by the moonbats in Boulder when my College Republican group hosted him the following year.
That most liberals and Democrats fail to condemn such outrageous comments is evidence of their moral shortcomings and ideological poverty. Same thing happened when Ronald Reagan died, and my liberal friends–not anonymous Internet posters–trashed him and conservatives in my presence.
So much for tolerance.

I want to honor Mr. Heston as others have in previous posts. He was a remarkable actor, he was a remarkable man and he will be missed greatly. I feel this terrible void that seems to be growing as these great men pass on. There were so many, and now there are so few. One of my fondest memories of him was when he attended the stock holders meeting of Time Warner and read aloud the lyrics to one of the ganster rap songs being produced on that label. He finally got the attention of the company executives regarding the crap they were marketing. One hell of a way to make a point.
Of all the thousands of movies available for download from amazon.com, Ben Hur is not one of them.
I guess NOW B. Obama can get HIS gun – coward.

ABC news(sorry) just reported on Charlton Heston. They did report his march with MLK, but characterized it as his activism beginning on the left.
Wasn’t Martin Luther King a registered republican? I don’t think the term left and right was in our lexicon at the time of Charlton marching with Dr. King in “63″, right or wrong?
So, again it looks as though the msm is rewriting history as they see fit.
I wouldn’t watch the crap ABC, NBC, CBS if I could afford cable. I’m not on welfare so I don’t get the dish on my plasma.
I shall now watch the 10 Commandments followed by Ben Hur. One my favorite actors of all time.

I believe MLK was registered as a Republican and his most vicious opponents were Southern Democrats.
I also believe Charlton Heston was originally a democrat but, disappointed about the democratic party’s resistance to the civil rights movement, reregistered as a Republican. When asked why he was leaving the democratic party, Heston response was IIRC, (like the Gipper) ” I didn’t leave the democratic party, the party left me.”

Richard Widmark, gone. Charleton Heston, gone. Burt Lancaster, gone. There is no talent left in Hollywood. All the greats are gone, as is natural. But there’s nobody to replace them.
If not for the “F” word and old tv shows they’d have to close down.
And while I’m at it, I never understood the writer’s strike. How much effort and talent does it take to write over and over, “F” this and “F” that and “F” you?
This morning, on the CBS Early Show, they recounted Heston’s life and truly pissed me off (pardon my french).
The showed his life with respect to the political issues he supported and showed his marching with MLK followed by his famous “cold, dead hands” speech at the NRA, and said (by memory) “…he went from liberal issues (see march pix here) to conservative issues (see NRA speech here).
Now anyone who actually knows some vestige of history knows that civil rights in the 60’s was not a liberal issue. If anything, it was truly a conservative issue, as most Dems were pretty much against the concept.
And for that matter, who is to say that the NRA is only composed of conservatives?
The insinuation of liberalism continues at CBS. Surprise.

RIP. May you rest in peace. You were a talented actor who inspired and awed those who watched you on screen. Every Easter my husband and I watched you in Ben Hur and were amazed by your performance which earned you an Oscar.
You not only talked the talk, you walked the walk. Whether it was Civil Rights, Pro Life, or Gun Rights, you were there to speak up for Conservatives and the issues that we hold dear. You were a man of strength of integrity who spoke to what is and will always be great about America: freedom and the perserverence of the human spirit.
This particular tidbit is tragic, yet ironic, given the overwhelming, opening arms of Hollywood toward the eccentric, nihilistic, and ignorant of the acting and arts community:
The light of Hollywood is further diminished with this man’s passing. He was one of the “great ones.” He was a humble character unlike the “larger than life” oddities one finds in today’s Hollywood.
Mr. Heston, what you did mattered and will be remembered. Say hi to Ronnie Reagan and the other angels in Heaven.

You know something? Even with the crap thrown at him by leftists within and without Hollywood for his unabashed support for gun rights and for conservative issues, even with the diminished acting opportunities, and even with the news media trashing him, he never once complained. He knew there were going to be those who will hate him because of his views and he accepted it as the price of being a public figure and taking a stand controversial issues. The left-wingers complain about chill winds and not playing nice, but Heston always took it with class, dignity, and strength.
