Cool Cartoonist wins Pulitzer

By see-dubya  •  April 7, 2008 04:52 PM

{Guest post by See-Dubya}

Pardon the name dropping, but I once sat next to Michael Ramirez at a dinner and he was every bit as cool and witty as you would expect from reading his cartoons. He told me some great stories about going around Cuba with a government minder and playing all sorts of pro-freedom practical jokes on the guy, and on the country. Super guy, and amid all the silly Pulitzers that get handed out, Ramirez had it coming.

I mean, check this out:

ramirez13.gif

The guy can really draw, too, which is rare these days among editorial cartoonists, and he’s at his best when representing an absurd jumble of technology or machinery. He mentioned to me that he tends to pile in little bits of whatever tech junk he sees around the room into the rats’ nest–so if you look closely sometimes you’ll see ceiling fans, refrigerator parts, and random nonsense thrown in there, like Wally Wood and Will Elder used to do for the old MAD magazine.

Here’s his archive at IBD. I thought he used to have his own website where you could congratulate him, but I’ll bet someone will tell him about the comment thread here if it’s nice enough.

H/T to Hot Air headlines and Extreme Mortman.

I just went over and looked at some of the cartoons and had a nice walk down memory lane. Some made me LOL. Some made me think. Some made me sad. They are all great and evoke emotions on many different levels.

    Congratulations Michael!

It’s always a pleasure to see his cartoons!

And the Commercial Appeal in Memphis is much the worse for his leaving, it’s now nothing but liberal birdcage liner…

To longbow and behiker, I do have a use for the Commercial Appeal. If I have a decision to make, I read it and decide the opposite.

How pleaseant to see a pro-American cartoon for a change. My local ….fishwrap, the Miami Herald printed 3 foreign cartoons today. Needless to say, they were not exactly flattering to the USA.

Thanks for bringing this out Michelle.

Finally, a Pulitzer for a deserving person!

Mr. Ramirez’s work must be the most addictive/copied/emailed/forwarded editorial cartoons! They are gooooood!

I subscribed to Townhall funnies to view them.

What? I suspect someone got snookered.

Perhsp the prize committee received a gag nomination from a Mr. el-Rushbo and mistaken the name for someone from CAIR. Naturally, they approved the award with even reviewing Ramirez’ work.

    Ramirez is a true artist.

Here is an example of the childish cartoons by Clay Jones that appear in my hometown paper, the Free Lance Star

This paper really needs to get another third-grader who has some drawing talent.

Ramirez’s best one’s are of McCain. His colorful descriptions and characterizations really hit the nail on the head.
The cartoons of Obama are pretty true too but they could be a little more biting. (like the one of Michelle Obama). I don’t think he was intentionally soft on Obama, but if you compare the Obama and McCain cartoons, you can see that, like many of the rest of us, he appears to be more angry and disappointed in McCain than Obama. Probably because betrayal hurts more than disgust.

Growing up in Memphis, I would turn to Ramirez’s cartoon in the Commercial Appeal’s section A before I’d turn to the other comics in section C. I can’t think of a more deserving choice for this award.
