Showdown in San Fran
They’ve cut short the Olympic torch relay route in San Francisco. The astro-turfing by the ChiComs failed. Via the SFChronicle:
San Francisco officials said they would cut the Beijing Olympic torch route short today, following a chaotic morning along San Francisco’s Embarcadero, where thousands of people descended to support and protest the torch run.
The torch was lit at McCovey Cove around 1:20 p.m. and the first runner - buffered by Chinese and American police - headed away from the crowd and into the Pier 48 building on the waterfront. It was not clear whether the runners would emerge and run along the original Embarcadero route, but protesters speculated that authorities may choose to move the torch by boat to the Ferry Building instead of allowing runners to carry it along the Embarcadero.
Thousands of people have gathered along the route since early this morning, with pro-torch demonstrators facing off against protesters who are hoping to draw attention to the nation’s human rights record.
Many of the pro-torch demonstrators carrying red Chinese flags were bused in by the Chinese consulate and other pro-China groups, though others said they had come of their own accord. Meanwhile, many of the protesters carried Tibetan flags and preached independence for the country. Others were on hand to support Burma or rail against China’s backing of the Sudanese government in its war in Darfur.

Those pro-Chinese folks that were interviewed on TV today looked and talked like they were hand picked right out of Bejing…I’m quite sure they were.

Interesting fact: most protesters are liberals of the kind that demonstrate at international economic summits and heckle Bush wherever he goes.
Too bad I wasn’t chosen to run the torch route in San Francisco. I can do the complete original route and not one protester would have a chance of stopping me because I can easily out run all of them. My estimated time for that 6 mile original Embarcadero route, 30 to 32 minutes, even while holding the torch.
Hey olympian, what will be your event in the Olympics?
I’m on the same side as Richard Gere? Am I doing something wrong?
The International Olympic Committee gave the 1936 games to Nazi Germany and haven’t learned a damned thing since about totalitarian regimes. How long will these august purveyors of global goodwill and commercial exploitation of “amateur” sports walk around with their heads in a place where the sun doesn’t shine?
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
If the Dalai Lama wasn’t in the US offering anti-Christians an alternative spirituality* I doubt more than a few of them would give a rat’s rear. They can’t rub it Bush’s nose or blame it on the evil corporations.
[*That is not meant as a slight against the Dalai Lama.]
#7 I don’t think it has as much to do with where their heads are but how full their pockets became by
givingselling the games to China. And like I asked a few days ago, where were all of the protests when China was being considered to host the Olympics?By the way, whose bright idea was it to have the torch relay in San Fran? No one ever protests in San Fran! Riiiiiight.
I wonder how many of those anti-olympic protesters knew there was a Tibet a month ago…or even know where it is today? Doesn’t matter. Next week, they’ll be protesting something else…racism to illegal aliens, maybe.
The raw irony that is lost on all of this, is that the people that are out there protesting against the ChiComs and their treatment oof Tibet and all the other thiings they are creating a ruckus about…well they are the same people that are PROMOTING the EXACT same ideology here in this country. These are the people that are promoting Socialism and Communism for this country. All of these groupls being backed by the Communists and Socialists have got to be the biggest gathering of hypocrites around.
This is what they are missing. Their very beliefs…the very tnets that they are preaching and spreading in this country will lead…if it would ever be successful…to the very thing that they are protesting today in San Francisco.
Proving once again that the biggest liars and hypocrites on this planet are Liberals and Democrats. What is worse is they probably know it, but are refusing to ever admit it.
And, isn’t it ironic, that the people calling on President Bush to boycott a Venue of Goodwill in China, are the very same ones who want to talk with terrorists in Iran?
I’m not a big fan of the Olympics or the pomp and ceremony thereof. However, I’m a less fan of China’s treatment of citizens et al.
There is no reason to make the torch bearers subject to protest mania.
Round up the protesters, cart their unemployed butts to China and let them protest over there. Give them something to really protest.
These people are truly professional protestors aren’t they? I’ve got mixed emotions on this thing.
Re Graysonret’s comment #10, they are already protesting that the attacks constitute racism. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal today, & probably this was in other places, that many of the Chinese in this country believe that these protess attack them as Chinese. Reminded me of Laura Bush’s comments during the Harriet Miers fiasco that she ‘detected sexism’ in the opposition to Miers.
Since there was only one city in the U.S. getting to participate in the torch relay, how did one of the most un-american cities get picked?
I can think of at least a hundred other cities that would better represent the U.S. than San Francisco. The speaker of the house must get some input in deciding these things.
What, was Berzerkeley too busy with the Marines?
Are those blue clad protectors PLA thugs?
I usually skip the Olympics. They remind me of the UN.
What’s this? A Bay Area event, and no Code Pink? No way…somebody must’ve told them about it.
I forgot…the Chinese Government executes prisoners with a bullet to the brain, so that they can harvest, and sell the vital organs for transplants, worldwide. I guess Code Pink thinks this activity is okay, since it benefits those poor souls who have defective body parts…the ends justify the means?
-Plus, CP already carries a torch for the commies, so they would be on the wrong side here.
Rent a mob
Simple. The Olympic Committee is a bunch of sad sack Princes and Dukes and other left over royalty from old Europe and a bunch of hangers-on and wannabes. They are America hating leftists, most of whom are on welfare but seem to have lots of money from their Olympic endevours. Of course they picked San FranSissy, it stands for everything old Europe loves. There are Marines in Berkeley. A lefty could get hurt there.
How could you tell? Were the protesters torching McDonalds and Starbucks?
Might have had something to do with a part of San Francisco called Chinatown.
Since the modern Olympics is no longer for amateur athletes conducted in the spirit of competition, continues to be more and more politicized, and is now a corporate boondoggle maybe it is time to just stop holding this drain of resources on the cities and countries that host them. I have already decided to boycott the games and any channel willing to display this show of communist propaganda. For once I find myself in agreement with the moonbats when it comes to protesting the abuses of human rights by the People’s Republic of China. The flying pig has been towed out of the hangar, started engines, and is taxing out to the runway cleared for takeoff.
Since they rerouted the torch bearer at the last moment, what’s the point of even going ahead and running it?
Tibet: Bringing Buddhist liberals and ChiCom hatin’ conservatives together in harmony.
I believe SF was chosen because it has the largest Chinese population in the country. When the games start I know I’ll be up at 3 AM to watch a ping pong match.
What about San Francisco makes it “un-american”?
Chinese Police officers in the US?
The only North American stop? Who’s the crack head that made that decision? I can’t believe it they end up having to hide the torch. This is the biggest joke I have ever seen in Olympic history and that’s saying something. Once again we all get stuck looking like morons by the rest of the world. I will watch them only to see if the Chinese women swimmers sporting moustaches are any bigger this year. I’ve always been a fan of Ripley’s believe it or not, circus freak shows, Hollywood, that kind of stuff.
OK, OK, OK! San Francisco can be a pain. I know. I work there, and I lived there for 30 years. But not everyone here is nuts, or even liberal, for that matter. It’s just that the libs here believe everyone thinks like them.
Well, I don’t, and I’m on the city payroll.
SF was chosen because the city is one-third Chinese, with many more in the burbs.
It seems, for once, they did something right. Playing “hide the torch” all day at least kept the professional protest set from doing anything really stupid.
Actually, if presented correctly, the O;ympics being held in China could do a great deal to bring attention to their deplorable record of Human Rights violations.
However, getting the point across that China is violent and guilty of Human Rights Violations by committing acts of violence and violating people’s human rights is not exactly the way to do it, and ultimately will only drum up stmpathy for the Chinese in the long run.
I am going to ignore “The Other Side” and the idiotic question of “What makes San Francisco Un-American” because I refuse to believe that anyone in this day and age of modern technology and midia information, could be that stupid and ask such an absolutely assinine and idiotic question for any other reason other than to invoke people’s ire and create problems.
Picking on the people that are carrying these torches is nothing less that the basest form of bullying that there is. Some of these people are children, or crippled, suffering from fatal diseases or have recovered from the same and are doing so as a sign and showing of victory and to bring attention to their individual causes. It is something they will be proud of and remember for the rest of their lives. Now, to have this once in a lifetime event ruined because of Naziesque jackbooted thugs threatening them and carrying on like the unwashed hippie brats of old that they are is nothing short of unforgiveable.
You want to protest? You want to change things? Go the Hell back to China and do it on THEIR land. Show us all how big and brave and strong you are by taking on the People’s Army like my good friend from High School did who was never heard from again in Tiannemen Square almost 20 years ago.
Like always, these idiot Liberals are attacking the wrong people. They are going after innocents instead of those that are resonsible and generally ruining everyone’s good time and lives.
They are no different in mentality and tactics than the Crownshirted SA…they just have a different target…this time. Yet oddly enough…believe in the same tenets.
Bush is going to the Beijing Olympics. Freedom is important, but not as important as sports.
What really is comical here, is the far left, protesting the far left, for doing exactly what the far left does. We have socialists protesting socialism and demanding democracy for Tibet; a country they probably never heard of, a month ago. It all goes to show that they are protesting for something to protest, in front of news cameras.
This is also what happens when bumpersticker slogans come to the forefront.
Now, all of a sudden, all of those Liberal Hippie Leftists Moron Throw-backs who bought all those colorful “Free Tibet” bumperstickers in the Quad during the last “Earthday” celebration or at the last “Bush is Hitler” rally and protest will now have to come foreward and explain to people just exactly what Tibet is, where it is, and why it should be free.
I am reminded of a “Family Guy” episode where Peter Giffin, the main character, is confronted by a bunch of hippies with “Free Tibet” signs. He looks at one of these guys and states, “I’ll TAKE IT!!” He then immediately goes to a pay phone and is heard saying, “Hello, China? I have something you might be interested in. That’s right…all the tea…” and it ends with ominous music.
I can’t help but imagine a bunch of these College Know-It-All-Hippies walking around at these rallies and protests trying to find out what a Tibet is, and where they can get one since they are obviously handing them out for free.
Honestly I’m kinda surprised nobody lobbed balloons full of alcohol or gasoline at the torch.
