Sharia in the schools: Monitoring the American madrassa
Katharine Kersten’s excellent investigative work on the Minnesota taxpayer-funded Islamic school, TIZA, has led to a state probe of the institution. It has also shed light again on the spread of sharia in U.S. secondary public schools.
You’ll remember the heated battle in San Diego over Muslim prayers in a public charter school.
You may recall the jihadi crossword puzzle discovered by parents in Johnston County, NC.
In Contra Costa (CA) County, school officials allowed Islam indoctrination lessons that subjected public school students to prayer recitation sessions and Muslim re-naming. Remember?

And in Brooklyn , the fight continues over the Arabic-themed Khalil Gibran International Academy.
The grass-roots group, Stop the Madrassa, continues to press for transparency–and continues to get stonewalled by educrats:
After four separate Freedom of Information Law requests and four court hearings, the Department of Education has not responded to our demands for complete transparency. The reason for KGIA’s existence is to teach the Arabic language and Arabic Culture; however, the curricula and textbooks have not been revealed. As we pursue the truth, everyone continues to wonder exactly what is being taught in the Khalil Gibran International Academy. Are they learning that Muslims discovered America? If so, why? The answer is that if the Islamists can establish their presence as the original inhabitants of North America then the land becomes part of the Ummah, the Islamic lands. The caliphate now extends to the United States.
Ed Lasky at The American Thinker exposed this curricular sharia creep several years ago:
A Native American tribe has forced distributors of an Arab studies guide for American teachers to remove an inaccurate and absurd passage that Muslim explorers preceded Columbus to North America, and eventually became Algonquin chiefs named Abdul—Rahim and Abdallah Ibn Malik!
The Middle East Policy Council, a Washington advocacy group that promotes this curriculum to school districts in 155 U.S. cities have apparently been somewhat unresponsive and dismissive of complaints. Ridiculous as this example is, it is illustrative of a far more disturbing development: the placement of propaganda in our schools by Muslim extremist groups. As the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation pointed out in a report …titled, “The Stealth Curriculum:Manipulating America’s History Teachers” these efforts are intended “to use America’s public school classrooms to shape the minds of tomorrow’s citizens by manipulating what today’s teachers introducing into the lessons of today’s children”
The American Textbook Council has played a leading role in resisting Arab efforts to supply propaganda to our schools, and recently published a report, “Islam and the Textbooks”, by Gilbert T. Sewall, which reports this phenomenon. It can be found here.
These militants and their supporters have set their eyes on our children, and are attempting to brainwash them by supplying free textbooks which whitewash the truth regarding Muslim extremism, while promoting Arab and Palestinian political goals. These “teaching materials” also impugn and devalue America, Western nations, Israel. Judaism, and Christianity. The article, ‘Textbooks for Jihad,’ found here is a good analysis of these developments .
The Council on American—Islamic Relations, some of whose members have been “outed” as terror supporters, has an active program to supply these this type of propaganda to libraries across the nation. Naturally, like schools, the librarians are more than happy to accept inexpensive, or free, material to fill their shelves. Yet these same books and audio—visual material are filling our children’s minds with lies that are tantamount to propaganda that teach hate. Efforts should be made by local activists and PTA or PTO members to scrutinize the reading lists at our “educational” institutions.
The political and education establishments–see, for example, NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC chancellor Joel Klein–persist in labeling critics “bigots.”
They’re looking out for CAIR.
Who’s looking out for your children?

But remember people, Samuel Clemens is baaaaad for the children.
Propaganda? Goooood!
Mark Twain and Huck Finn baaaaaaaad!
After all … it’s for the children!
Me. I am. Small Catholic school. Regular meetings with teachers. Scads of volunteer hours to stay “plugged in” with what’s going on in the school. Nightly discussions — “What did you learn in school today?” Regular review of homework assignments. And yes, I’m a full-time professional. If you have a child, you must be prepared to invest all the time necessary to do all these things. It seems people don’t want to take the time anymore. Sad.
Thanks Michelle for keeping up to date on this. All parents who have children in schools need to be aware of this. It might more wide spread than parents know.
L
This doesn’t look like “separation of church and state” to me. How ’bout you guys?
Funny how liberals and secularists get their panties into a tear over saying the Pledge of Allegiance or any representations of religion (Christianity) and make a big stink about it but when it comes to Islam, it’s the complete opposite. Muslims are given their own “charter schools” and completely catered to.
Anybody else notice the double standard?
The enemy within.
The future of this country is not in doubt…..
…..We are farked.
This is yet another example of what David Horowitz has termed the ‘unholy alliance’ between radical Islam and the American left…they make common cause because of their joint hatred of Western civilization in general of America in particular….the enemy is inside the gates and wreaking educational havoc…time to cauterize this suppurating wound….note to self: buy more ammo at WalMart this weekend
I’m going to sue my public schools for not allowing my children to practice ritual human sacrifice as part of their Aztec religion.
Katharine Kirsten nails the problem succinctly: “In addition, there’s a double standard at work here — if TIZA were a Christian school, it would likely be gone in a heartbeat.”
We owe a debt of gratitude to the courageous Amanda Getz for speaking out about TIZA, and to Katherine Kirsten for writing this story.
Sadly, it will only be a matter of time before a fatwa is issued.
Pray for Amanda Getz and Katherine Kirsten.
Sharia creep is nothing new at least in terms of the strategy it employs. The long term strategy of Marxism/communism in overcoming the West has made heavy use of these techniques. This is because a frontal attack is nearly impossible and does not produce permanent results. Leftism/Islam it makes no difference, the tactics are identical and they share the common goal of the elimination of America. We know their playbook but we must counter attack now. Once the courts and schools are completely dominated, it becomes much more difficult. We have seen the results when our kids have been brainwashed for 12 years. Risk being called names, get in their faces, we are in the right. Bullrush them and drive them into the turf and then challenge the collaborator judges and politicians directly and constantly. It is indeed an unpleasent thing to contemplate and deal with, but we must if we want to continue as Americans. If not, then at best we survive as slaves. Never give up never give in. Live free or die baby.
Yeah, that crossword puzzle event occurred at the school from where I graduated.
Nothing ever happened to that creep either.
Odd huh? Only in NC.
Cinnamon Stillwell of Campus Watch has written about the dissemination of Muslim propaganda in our school system in her Frontpage article, “Promotion of Islam in Our Schools.”
You might also read this critique of the Middle East Policy Council’s propaganda package for elementary school students called the “Arab World Studies Notebook,” as reviewed by William J. Bennetta, president of the Textbook League. He as much as says that it is a patently fraudulent publication and hoax.
The sources of funding for all these propaganda projects are always opaque, but it’s not hard to figure out that the Saudis are behind it. The Saudis have poured $80B+ into propagating the Wahhabi death cult version of Islam since the 1980s. This infiltration of the school system is associated with the soft jihad being waged against America by the Saudis, of which the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR et al are combatants. This, in turn, is associated with the hard jihad of terrorism that is being waged against America and the world, also funded by the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia.
emjem, I’m not sure that’s right. Hardcore secularists (or atheists if you prefer), such as Hitchens spend quite a bit of time going after Islam. I think it probably appears that Christianity (at least in our country) gets the worst of it because Islam has been such an insignificant factor in the “church/state” arena until relatively recently. I would agree that some liberals who aren’t necessarily atheists or atheist sympathizers so to speak have sort of gone out of their way to “embrace” Islam in a kind of misguided effort to promote multi-culturalism. Goofy really.
Get rid of this disease. All madrassas should be shut down and no Federal monies given out….none. They are rewriting history just as the Dems do. Sick people.
Dakine. Only honest secularists… Plenty of time has passed for the mainstream Left to counter Islamist adventures. They are primed to suckerpunch Christians in a microsecond. That they continue to be silent this late into the game regarding Islam speaks volumes.
No, because it’s a mosque. It’s only those eeeeevvvvvvilllll Christian we have to watch out for and persecute.
In all seriousness, this is alarming. That lesson is a joke. Imagine having students be martyred saints. The outrage would be palpable.
America is under assault like no other time in its history. Leftists took over the environmental crusade when they learned Americans roll over for polar bears and snail darters. Now the horrible Wahabi death cult is using White Guilt, which is prevalent in teachers, to insert lies and half truths into the children’s minds to further debase Western Civ in the minds of the people. America is a pillar of rock in a sea of stupidity and venality. If the waves of evil finally wash over us, all is lost.
jcf, that’s probably a fair point. Why do you think that is though? Other than the multi-culturalism thing, I can’t think of any compelling reason why Islam would appeal to the sensibilities of the typical far left secularist.
I am particularly concerned with the situation in Brooklyn. The upside however is that his association with the madrassa(sp?)will pretty much end any Presidential ambitions that Bloomberg is rumored to have.
Once again it’s easy to see one of the most damaging enemies within is our court system. After pounding various religions with direction from the pompom ACLU the Islam cult appears in our educational system as the small cancer but ready to grow. We need a TWPU to bring Islam to justice and justice to the American people. We could also use a proactive leader we might call President of our country. They have such in Mexico.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, dakine.
No doubt secularists hope Islam will do away with Christianity, which secularists hate even more. Then they’re merely relying on their political correctness, tolerance, and compassion to get them out of trouble under shari’a law.
It would appear that defenders of Christianity need to find a charismatic leader who can stir up the moderates of this country with well-reasoned speeches about the dangers of sharia creep. We conservatives are already watching, but there are too many sheeple grazing in the pasture.
This is a great question. Hopefully we are all looking to ourselves and like minded individuals. We better quit looking to the government to dictate to us and be the great deciders. Whether R or D they don’t give a whit about anything but finances and continued globalization at ALL cost. Our children? Fodder for “nirvana” and the great social experiments.
Just another example of the dangers of public schools. Far too many of the teachers and administrators are involved in indoctrination rather than education.
The way to break the back of the public school monopoly is to demand vouchers and organize (and vote) in sufficient numbers that the local school boards and county boards are actually sufficiently concerned that they try experiments with vouchers and other forms of non-government organizations to educate the children
Another excellent post on this topic Michelle. Your one million readers a week need to spread the word, be on the look out for this nonsense in their neighborhoods.
I am still confused as to why the Brooklyn “Khalil Gibran International Academy” would choose to use the name of a Maronite Catholic poet for their school.
Not to cross thread but, people care more about American Idol than this problem and AA did their anti-Jesus rendition of a song about him. Do you think there will ever be a song where they would so quickly offend muslims? Somehow, I doubt it.
soap, I know that cyber-dakine and cyber-soap don’t really like each other much, but I think I’m with you on this issue. I’m not a big organized religion guy, but I’m having trouble with this issue. What do you think the reasons are behind the notion you articulated in your last post? Is it goofy PCness? Fear? There’s a disconnect for me.
Let’s just say I believe that there is an unwritten/unspoken alliance between America’s enemies, religious and secular. The destruction of America is paramount. Unforeseen consequences, not so much.
Military Academies
Mini-mosques- exponential growth in the number of Mulim applicants accepted since 2002.
These are our future officers.
Expert on Islamic activity -released from the Pentagon-no reason given.
EnglishQueen: You got it. The Left is in for a surprise. They can only hope they get the sharp butcher knife.
that would be ……..
Muslim applicants….
Well said. America is being sold out. What was it that Jefferson said about the blood of patriots?
In the vein of the B-2 “Spirit” bomber, it’s time for the Stealth Party (now the vast-vast-vast Silent Majority demonstrated in Newt Gingrich’s American Solutions polls) to swing into action. Until the “back of the public school monopoly” (as publiuswarmac9999 says) is broken, it’s time to start doing an Atlas Shrugged routine. Withdraw from supporting those elements of society that detest what we believe, but continue to communicate, expand the base, and vote and contribute - if it’s only $5 a month - relentlessly to those orgs and candidates that are Constitutionally correct. I hate to say it, but we are in occupied territory folks.

To keep you confused, in my opinion.
They strike me as the types who have learned that you can catch more flies with honey than by ramming airplanes into towers.
Everybody loves cute, little, poetic Khalil Gibran, right?
Western civilization has advanced through words. Words that have angered some, threatened others. While war has been the way that the west has defended that advancement via words. These people that label others as bigots, racists etc. in an attempt to shut down the advancement through the spoken word are a poison among our societies. Make no mistake the jihadists could destroy a few of our cities these others among us can bring down the entire works. Collaborators have always haunted the west they walk among us and they have in the past brought us to the brink. History repeats itself, it always has and always will. Shut down the spoken word and there will be no need for defensive war. So I guess the leftists know what they are doing with their pcmc ideology, shhh, it will end war! Do your part to save western civilization, spread the word.
To Tgusa – Bravo! And we must make sure the right words are in both our minds and hearts so our civil covenant will also be binding.
Doesnt this fly in the face of separation of church and state? Oh, yeh, I fergets….only if its a christian based assignment.
Never mind…carry on….
(what a bloody mess)
I pulled my kids out of school for something similar. They were learning Core Knowledge - and in 2nd grade they learned about Buddhism and Hinduism. The problem my husband and I had was the practice of these religions and the way they were presented in class. Then they learned - in depth - about the Greek gods and goddesses. We just didn’t feel it was appropriate in the 2nd grade. We homeschool now and will put them in a private Christian school in the fall. Then I know for sure what they are learning and who is teaching them.
You still need to be involved with what that private Christian school is teaching. I remember a few years ago, a story from out in California, about a Catholic high school (which was not actually under the purview of the Diocese) that had something to do with abortion: the school was penalizing a pro-life student for her pro-life activism (this student, at least at the time, had a blog). I’ll have to do a little research to refresh my memory properly.
#37 jenmom said:
That has to be a very comforting result of making the switch to homeschooling.
Understanding your concerns regarding age appropriation, I would teach my kids anything regarding Greek contributions to society (language, mythology, history, war strategy, etc.) to benefit a rounded education.
Jenmom:
Good for you. Aren’t 2nd graders supposed to be learning basics like reading, math, and the basic fundamentals? Where does the study of Buddhism and Hinduism fit into this? Ethnic Studies?
I guess it’s okay to learn “other religions” as long as it’s not Christianity. Big shocker.
Do you object to Christian indoctrination centers (publicly funded charter schools)?
The school is small and run by the church we are members of. We are already very involved with the school board there.
Homeschooling was our short term answer to getting them out of public schools, with the intent to go to our church’s school this fall.
I don’t mind my kids learning about Greeks, Romans, etc and their contributions to society. I had a real issue with the fact that they only taught the mythology and the Greek gods and goddesses. Then they had each child pretend to be one of the gods or goddesses for a school informance on Greeks (at Christmas time no less). I felt like there were things about ancient Greeks that could have been learned that would have been more beneficial to my child’s education.
Found it: Stand Up and Speak Out is her blog.
What started the mess: Loretto Teacher Fired: Part 2 - basically a teacher at the Catholic school was volunteering at Planned Parenthood. This girl’s mother, being an anti-abortion person who protested Planned Parenthood, saw the teacher and got her fired. Subsequently, this girl, the daughter of the woman who got the Planned Parenthood-volunteering teacher fired, was expelled from the school…
lgm:
I can’t help but go off topic here….after reading your post (i just don’t know why?)…but, do you wear argyle?
emjem24 - we were not at this school for 1st grade but they learned Christianity, Islam and Judaism at that time. The curriculum used is called Core Knowledge. We were the only school using it in our district. Our principal wanted to use it because the rich private school in town uses it.
I remember in 7th grade (1997ish) we had to do that whole segment on islam (California schools) I don’t think it was particularly inflammatory or over-the top, nor did it call for jihad or anything like that. It seemed to me that it was no different from the Hinduism segment in 6th grade- we even watched Aladdin in class to learn about “Islam” (which confused the heck out of some people). Then again, this was a pre-9/11 mindset, I don’t know if the curriculum has changed.
Was it as informative as the Christian and Jewish segments?
And a tweed jacket with patches on the elbows?
Probably…
(i dont know if i would like someone posting my pictures without permission….)

Just in, a statement on the obvious breach between church and state from the ACLU and other secularist groups:
*Chirping crickets.*
BTW, that curriculum propaganda piece on why men walk ahead of women in Muslim/Arab countries is so full of crap I could grow mushrooms in it.
Funny, I’m not the one who set up his public website, put that picture up and hyperlinked it to his MM username.
(OK, then…lmao. your cool then!
)
And here is Slick-willy selling our children to the wahhabbies:
http://www.blessedcause.org/proof/Clinton%20Embracing%20Islam%20selling%20out%20children.htm
Ever since the Gulf War everyone that has been ther says that it is the women that NOW walk 29 paces ahead of the men because of land mines!!!
Ever since the Gulf War everyone that has been there says that it is the women that NOW walk 29 paces ahead of the men because of land mines!!!
I object to publicly funded charters schools.
Do you, LGM, object to publicly funded Ismamic schools?
“Try an Islamic gesture, such as identifying a Christian in your class and cutting their head off.”
“Look for girls wearing provacative clothing and stone them to death.”
“Remeber, while on your journey, it is perfectly acceptable to kidnap wealthy infidels and demand ransom for their return.”
Isn’t this fun?
Dakine, I believe englishqueen01 already answered this correctly. It may not be true for you, but I believe many athiests and secularists have convinced themselves that Christianity is their greatest enemy and therefore anything that opposes Christianity is to be encouraged and promoted. This is an extremely dangerous way to choose your friends. I suspect you and I are on different sides of the political spectrum. That is fine, and we can (somewhat) reasonably discuss our differences in places like this. I would like to challenge you, on this issue, to enlighten your fellow (political) travellers on the dangers of this creeping indoctrination.
:))) LMHO!!!! oooh that hurt.

And Bush, doing his selling-out: http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/04/because_the_stu.html#comments
“Take a simulated Soviet anti-tank mine and bury it in a high traffic section of the playground to practice proper jihad techniques. Make sure the leg wires are long enough to properly hide the simulated trigger (cardboard ordnance and jihad material are provided in your Activity Pack).”
Is this a rhetorical question, Christian bashing, or both? How do you know it’s “indoctrination?” Ever been to one or is this speculation on your part?
I actually was a substitute teacher at a Montgomery, AL Presbyterian school where they had a curriculum that covered everything, nationally recognized, and accredited. Gee, they didn’t really cover religion very much even though they had a chapel. Lgm, do you know that independent schools (and these include those big bad “Christian indoctrination centers) need to be be accredited to operate? They have to jump through a lot more hoops than do your typical, taxpayer-funded, liberal indoctrination schools otherwise known as public schools. They go through the process every couple of years and they’re reviewed to make sure that their curricula conforms to what is recognized by their accrediting organization.
If you’re not accredited, you don’t operate. This also goes for most colleges and universities.

Canadian Mike, eq’s answer made some sense to me, but at the end of the day I think it’s got to me a less intentional phenomenon than that…too conspiratorial I think. Not sure what your politics are, but I’m basically a Goldwater-type conservative…fiscal and foreign policy conservative and libertarian on most social/cultural issues. I guess I’m a secularist as well (whatever that term means), since I’m not big on organized religion.
#47- There was quite a bit done on the great schism and the early times of Christianity. 6th grade was a whole unit about founding of civilization, complete with watching the 10 commandments and reading selections from the Old Testament.
