It is simply amazing what the internet can do when a candidate, or anyone for that matter, screws up when the cameras are rolling and the sound in on. The joke used to be that everyone in the future will have their 15 minutes of fame. The 21st century version is that everyone will have their most embarrassing 15 minutes on YouTube — for all the world to watch. Not that it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy — that means you, Mr. Obama. But for anyone contemplating a public career, watch out. I still think no politician today quite gets it yet.
I had instant inspiration for this. It may be what happens to our dollar if Obama gets elected.

Obama and Clinton are appearing at a the “Compassion Forum” in rural Pennsylvania at Messiah College tonight.. CNN has exclusive broadcast rights. 8-9:30 April 13th. My son attended this college and got a very good education at a high price and the relatively new President of the school is taking it on a big left leaning turn. They don’t. My parents attend church regularly. I grew up in a household where my stepfather owned a handgun. My stepmothers attend a bible study group almost daily. They are conservatives to the core and we have much spirited debate at family gatherings. And they don’t scare me. It is some of the far,far,far righties on boards like these that scare me. Interestingly enough, when I mention to my stepfather that I listen to Hugh Hewitt, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity at times, he laughs…as he too believes they are fearmongeres, handpicking stories to distort reality. And this coming from a man, he believes William F Buckley and Ronald Reagan are just a notch below God.

Obama’s point was not that ALL small towns are a bunch of “hicks”. His point was that in those small towns deeply affected by economic downturn, people hold on to their belief systems more fervidly. My point is that those states who seemed to be struggling more economically, also tend to have higher rates of gun ownership and religious fervor. Is this relationship categorically true? maybe not, but statistics tend to read that way. An over-generalization, probably. But one that hees some thought.
I will agree that this is probably an unfair generalization. So I guess that I am as guilty of those on these boards that over generalize about the left as well.
Bitter, bitter people. So bitter that it makes them cling to guns and crosses. So bitter that it makes them the “mean” America in Michelle Obama’s world. And I would bet that their bitterness is also the result of being “punished” with children.
If they would just lay off the cheesesteaks and eat more arugula, they may find life a little better. Caviar, anyone? (Oh, to those bitter rubes in small town America, caviar is what you use for bait, only better).

My question is: what does one have to do with the other?
Are you stating that states doing poorly are doing so because people are clinging to what you may feel are outdated concepts?
That they have these higher rates and that they are not on the top economically are un-related facts. You cannot seriously draw one conclusion from the correlation.
As to Obama being a snob, I both listened to and read the transcript of that speach. HE is stating that these states are doing poorly because they are clinging to their institutions that he apparently disagrees with.

In your analogy of ice cream and drowning, the relationship is quite clear – hot weather.
With the higher rates of gun ownership and religious affilation in states that do poorly ecomonmically, the obivous causal relationship is not there. So, most likely the relationship is because one effects the other. Neither Obama (check your transcript and please cite otherwise) nor I are claiming gun ownership and religious affilation are causing economic downturn, but that economic downturn leads to holding on more firmly to one’s beliefs. Gun ownership and religious affilation have declined nationally over the past few decades, whereas those states fitting the description above, have declined at a slower rate. That leads one to believe that there is some validity in Obama’s statement.
And Obama told you this personally-correct. This sounds like all the other people how have said, “what I really think he meant was ____________________ (fill in the blank).

Ok, I’ll buy this statement as one of exact fact. The problem is one of implication. I cannot go back and re-read his words (already stated above by another commenter) without getting the distinct impression that what I have stated is his intended meaning.
Again, unless you can provide some better evidence than changing rates, your point isn’t quite valid, and neither is his. At best, one can say it deserves more study.

Political satire like this is not new (for those that think we’ve reached new lows). This is a great job of campaign artwork.
Many years ago we used to see some very raucus editorial cartoons during the campaign season. We also had slogans that today would land someone in front of some kind of human rights hearing.
If memory serves, Thomas Jefferson was once called The Antichrist during a campaign.

Many years ago I remember learning about the Jefferson/Burr campaign and the 1860,64 campaigns as well. You’re right to point this out as it’s something we tend to forget.

What’s really disturbing to me is that Obama, or ANY candidate, would make gun rights an issue on the campaign trail. As I recall, we ended that debate when we wrote the Second Amendment. Am I wrong?
As to the rest of Obama’s statement, people don’t cling to faith because of a poor economy, they have faith in God despite a bad economy. We don’t turn away from when times are good – at least, we shouldn’t.
Also, for the umpteen-millionth time, “anti-immigrant” is not “anti-illegal immigrant!” There’s a fundamental and profound difference between the two; namely, respect for the rule of law. Why should we trust people to abide by our laws once they’re here, when they’re willing to break our laws to enter this country in the first place?
And lest Obama, TheOtherSide, or any other liberal accuse poor, rural Pennsylvanians of not trusting people who don’t “look like them,” I would direct your attention to Obama’s black church. And Affirmative Action. And the United Negro College Fund. And the NAACP. Black This. Negro That. Colored, Black, Negro . . . tell me again, who is it that cares about people who don’t “look like them?”

Obama is not the exception among Dems. Many are snobs, many are bitter. Obama’s church is full of bitter, angry, and ignorant people. Perhaps that’s how he reached his conclusion that religion is the refuge of the disenfranchised. Watch the political “analysts” on Fox or any other cable outlet – the Dems rarely smile, in fact they usually seem droll and unhappy. Consider the mortitician-like Alan Colmes on Hannity & Colmes.

I’ve been reading this thread with some interest, especially TOS’s attempt to rationalize BHO’s statements.
Basically here’s what I have come away with.
In essence what BHO and TOS are saying is that if government does a proper job of cradle to grave state nannism to placate the masses and make everything all better then Americans don’t need God or values, that we can just do away with all that because government will be the end all of every ones desires.

TOS’s data for states’ poor economic performances was GDP per capita. A misleading indicator since the states with the highest GDPs per capita are (mostly) among the most expensive to live in. Check this map http://www.missourieconomy.org/indicators/cost_of_living/index.stm and compare it to TOS’s.
Would you rather have 100K annual income in Raleigh or San Francisco? Bismark or NYC? Houston or Portland (OR or ME)?

You know Jim M, I have two brothers who are attorneys. One went to Dartmouth and Northwestern School of Law, the other went to USF-Tampa (like his big sister) and to John Marshall. Guess which one makes more money? That’s right the public school kid. Not everyone can get into their school of choice but if you decided your life was over then and there, well you have no one to blame but yourself. As my other brother found out, IVY League educations do not always equate into mega bucks.
You have it entirely wrong, The Other Side. Everyone but fellow elites can see right through Barack Hussein Obama. Hussein Obama looks at himself as an elite foreigner who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, went to the best private schools, attended Ivy League Schools, is the religion-chic (Islam), has an elitist view of Christianity (liberation theology), and finally is a Marxist, the ultimate in elitism. He is about as American as someone like Pol Pot, and has a strikingly similar background of these types of people(moderately wealthy, elite schools, scholarships, disdain for his fellow countrymen).
Let’s PLEASE hope Snobama Hussein makes it at least to get the Democratic nomination, and that his elite, foreign views don’t completely bring the foreigner Snobama down beforehand.

Obama’s Linguistic Trap

Over at American Thinker is a real good indication as to how Obambi thinks, because like he said “words have meaning”.He, even more than his rival, will try to convince you that what you thought he said was not really what you thought he meant simply because you misunderstood it.
Obama seems to be more of a silver spoon populist, which means he fumbles a lot trying to explain the typical American, which, granted, he is not.
Elitism seems to be a characteristic of the elected political class in a representative democracy. In that regard, Obama can be considered elitist, but, fortunately, he doesn’t have the legislative record to prove it.
One only needs to point out that Sen Jim Bunning was the ONLY person to vote against a mortgage (bank) bailout in the name of saving homeowners to see the odd pairing of voter-buying populism with nanny-state political elitism shared by both sides of the aisle.
But to respond to the original post: it is a funny shirt, even if the sentiment is a bit off the mark. I’d wear it just to annoy my liberal friends.
US News ranks Oberlin College the 20th best liberal arts college in the US in its 2008 rankings–just a few points down from Vassar and Colgate. It was closer to 15th place in the 1990s. That is mini-Ivy League to me.

Granted not a large sample, but when I lived in NYC the only people that I knew that had guns were the ultra liberals. They lived in fear of losing some of their material goods.
MY skin is light mocha brown.
Growing up in rural South Jersey, it always seemed darker than it really was. To the pink-necked bigots who couldn’t tell Philadelphia from the Philippines, the light mocha brown skin of the Maglalang family and the caramel skin of the Patel family and the deep ebony skin of the Jackson family were indistinguishable. We were all equal, all right. Equally non-white. Equally “Niggers.”
On a recent vacation, my naturally burnished hide once again invited the kind of circus-freak scrutiny I’d grown indifferent to since childhood. A genteel lady from rural Virginia had been chatting vacuously with my husband (who happens to be a person of pallor). When I joined him casually and slipped my hand in his, the curious belle interrupted herself to squint closely at my brown visage. In the lilting, exaggerated manner of a civilized explorer trying to
communicate with a deaf barbarian, she asked me: “AND . . . WHAR . . . ARE . . . YEW . . . FRUM?”
I’ve been called every racial epithet in the book. But whites aren’t the only ones who pass ill judgments based on color.
Within my own ethnic group – within my own family – there is shade-based bigotry. Back in the Philippines, upscale restaurants refuse to hire natives with skin darker than sand. The movie industry promotes model “mestizos” and “Maria Claras” – pale as paper due to the blanching effect of Spanish blood. Lighter-skinned cousins mocked me as “The Brownie.” Pitying aunties suggested rubbing my skin with pumice stones for a more desirable complexion.
So it comes as no small surprise to learn that Asian Americans like myself are now considered non-minorities of non-color in the press. A news article last week on minority admissions at the University of California referred to “students of color” on the one hand – and “Asians and whites” on the other.
In a recent editorial decrying California’s Proposition 209 and Washington state’s Initiative 200, The Seattle Times referred to the “precipitous drop in minority admissions” in California as a result of abolishing racial preferences.
Numerous stories further reported that “minority admissions” had plummeted at UC Berkeley by 61 percent. The Times and other leading opponents of I-200 warn ominously that what’s happening on California campuses could happen here if the measure passes in November.
But what’s really happening?
As UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh points out, the total percentage of racial minority students at Berkeley – including Asians – actually fell from 57 percent to 49 percent, not by 61 percent. And, Volokh observed: “The drop was exclusively among blacks, Latinos and American Indians. Asians, who make up less than 10 percent of the California population, apparently aren’t a minority.’”
Whitewashing Asians out of the post-209 college admissions equation allows for simpler, more inflammatory rhetoric. Thus, The Seattle Times can look at California and conclude that proponents of race-neutral policies in Washington state want to “preserve preferences of greatest advantage to white males and to eliminate those that benefit women and racial and ethnic minorities.” Never mind that abolishing racial preferences in higher ed led to a 16 percent increase in admissions for Asians and Pacific Islanders at Boalt Law School in Berkeley, and a 18 percent increase at UCLA Law School.
Out of political expedience, “minority” has been redefined by racial-preference promoters. It is no longer an objective statistical category, but an ideological status. Members of minority groups who have overcome barriers to success – and who oppose being tallied by race – are no longer viewed as people with valuable heritages, diverse life experiences, or raw memories of discrimination and prejudice. They are effectively “white” and simply don’t count.
A sad irony of the battle over racial preferences here in Washington is that many of the leaders wielding exclusionary paintbrushes are Asian Americans themselves. With a great deal of moral smugness and zeal, they too are echoing calls to defend Washington against the California “threat” of race neutrality. In the name of diversity, they share President Clinton’s concern that race-free, merit-based admissions could lead to universities filling “their entire freshmen classes with nothing but Asian Americans.”
Unbelievable. Never could I have imagined growing up that I would see the day when brown- and yellow-skinned people would stand on the side of pink-skinned bigots railing against the problem of too many of “them.” Never could I have imagined that overcoming the encumbrance of colored skin would be treated with contempt and punished with a new
status in society:

Way to highjack the thread. Do you have any comment on Obama’s elitist mentality, or are you just going to remain in the gutter and hurl insults at our host?
I take it that your vitriol and cyber tantrums relate to the fact that you are the epitome of the Obama supporter who is so conflicted by white guilt or racial animus that you have lost all ability to relate an objective thought about the “Hope-a-Dope”. Obama is an empty suit; a man who is adrift without a teleprompter or rehearsed speech; a man who stands for everything, and at the same time, stands for nothing.
Keep up the great work of reinforcing the stereotype of the Obama supporter as a mindless drone who is trained to attack in a killer bee-like swarm at the slightest hint of a dissenting view. If you ever do put your claimed education to use and exercise one of those higher brain functions the rest of us call “thought”, you may just be surprised one day to see your chosen one in a whole new light.
