Moment of Truth In Iraq
Longtime readers of this blog have long been moved and enriched by the work of independent milblogger, photojournalist, and essayist Michael Yon. Many of you pitched in to help Michael buy one of the cameras he used to take his phenomenal pictures, including the iconic photo on the cover of the book. His new book is here. Make sure it’s on your spring reading list.
The Glenn and Helen Show features Michael in today’s podcast. Must-listen here.

Highly recommend anything written by Michael Yon! If this book is anything like the dispatches he posts from Iraq, and I’m sure it will be, it will be a fantastic, can’t -put-it-down success. He is telling the stories of many unsung heroes, without an agenda and without pulling punches when the bureaucracy occasionally gets in the way. I’m ordering my copy today.
Michael Yon is, quite clearly to me at least, the best.
That photo represents a great alternative view of our soldiers in Iraq. The Left loves to portray them in Commiewood films as thugs, rapists and homicidal maniacs. These brave Americans are fighting to help preserve the freedom that Leftists take for granted. If we don’t stand up to the Islamic Jihadists in Iraq now, where or when will we fight them?
I haven’t read his book yet, but Instapundit keeps track of him regularly. Ordering it now on Amazon…
Yon should know. He has been there a long time, right in the middke of it. Godf bless him!
Michael’s work has been featured regularly here as well since 2005. He’s an inspiration and a friend and a national treasure. Buy the book!
Michael Yon is the epitome of a war correspondent.
Thanks for introducing us to him Michelle, all those years ago. I’m ordering book from Amazon now (love the 1-click feature).
I will be sure to keep a look out of his book, now that I have started working again and can buy it for myself.
My daughter asked me what i wanted for fathers day and i have asked for this book. Thank you MM. I can not wait to read it.
Michael Yon is the “Ernie Pyle” of this war providing the real story of this generation of heroes. Thanks Michelle for the heads up I will add this to my personal library. The least I can do to help support his work in getting the truth out stifling the lies of the MSM reported from the safety of their “Green Zone” bunkers.
I “pre-ordered” the book and got a signed copy yesterday. It’s hard to put down. Yon is not just a soldier’s point of view but also “tells it” in a most profound sense. I am so impressed with this book and his method. He’s due for a prize.
My signed copy arrived a couple of days ago.
I can’t help but mentally contrast Yon’s first hand accounts and complex analysis with the juvenile heckling we saw from our Democrat senators at the Petraeus hearing.
Re #12, what you said.
Michael restores my faith in journalism. A coincidence that he doesn’t work for any of the outlets?
He is trying to get his book into bookstores and libraries…you can all help by going to this link and downloading the banners for your blogs and a flier:

This was the link on the page…I hope it works…it seems really long.
This book goes at the front of the list for summer reading. Just listened to Yon’s interview on Medved’s show. What a great American.
Is it too late to run him for President in 2008?
I should say that “Everything I Need To Know I Learned From MM”…to parody an
old book title, but thanks to MM, I am so familiar with Michael Yon and have
already ordered his book from Amazon. Did it this weekend, as soon as I saw
that it was out. Can’t wait to read it.
Happy birthday, again, zorro. I am also hooked on amazon’s one click feature, much to my husband’s dismay, because I am an unrepentant
bibliophile.
I wrote a paper analyzing one of his photos!
(To be more specific, the photo I analyzed was “Thanks and Praise,” the one of the Iraqis putting the cross back up on the church.)
UberInfidel~
You beat me to posting the link to that “please stock this book” flyer.
My signed copy (only available through Michael’s site) arrived last Monday and I finished it Wednesday evening. It would have been finished Tuesday if I didn’t have responsibilities
It is a most excellent read. His recent Op/Ed is a good summary for the book, IMO.
Please everyone buy this book it will drive the left nuts seeing it atop of the NYT bestseller list. I got my signed copy and did not want to put it down. Quite the inspiration. He pulls no punches and appears to tell it like it is. If you only read one book this year this is the one to read.
I went to my local bookstore today (books a million) to get this book. I couldn’t find it, so finally asked. The clerk looked it up for me and told me they do not/will not carry this book in their physical stores….although you can order it from the online site or the store can order it for you. That stinks! I wonder if the other big sellers are handling this the same way? BTW….came home and ordered it from Amazon and in fact ordered two copies so as to donate one to my very small local library.
My copy arrived today, too! I can’t wait to read it.
Honestly, being a military brat with many family members having served in the ME and a cousin who recently joined the Marines who is likely to go soon, I’d like to see us “Win”. But before we do that, I’d think our political leaders would need to define victory in concrete terms. Haven’t seen that happen yet. Hoping whoever occupies Washington in January is capable of doing that.
I ordered mine and also downloaded the flier to give to my local bookstores. That image on the cover is the best. He couldn’t have picked a better one. I see it and immediately think of Yon’s unique way of capturing the caring of our soldiers.
Please you can’t be serious.
Politicians are not able to define “victory” because they really have no clue during wartime.
I wonder if you can even define “victory” correctly?
Already ordered… Yon has had great stuff for years.
Just ordered 3 (one for us, one for my stupid cousin, and one to donate to the library-great idea dustoffmom)and can’t wait to get them.
Done and done.
I’ll buy the hardcover, ordering now, but does anyone know how long we’ll need to wait for an audio version?
I have some relatives that love the audio version.
Ordered the signed copy the other day. Plan on sending it to my soldier in Iraq.
Bought the book this morning, can hardly wait to get it…
The picture on the cover is so incredibly moving…it breaks my heart….
Always ready to do my part. Ordered the book. Now here’s hoping the neighbors don’t grab it from my door when it’s delivered and burn it. Yeppers, I have THOSE types for neighbors. Life is a hoot!
I ordered one earlier this evening. My son is on his first deployment to Iraq in a month or so. God bless our troops and Michael Yon.
I had printed out the flyer, and I took it with me to the local B&N this evening. I went up to the Customer Service desk and showed it to the guy behind the counter. He found it in the computer, and said he’d “short list it” (whatever that means) and order one. Even though I have my own (signed) copy, I might check back to see if they get it in, then buy it to include in a care package to one of my Any Soldier contacts. Maybe then they might stock more, and more… :-p
Also, as of just a bit ago, his book was #6 on Amazon, but it’s sold out, expected to be back in stock April 23rd.
#22; same thing at the Barnes & Noble here in Arizona. They have all kinds of titles about how Bush lied and the war is a disaster- my favorite , “Defeat: How the U.S. and Britain Lost The War In Iraq”, with a cover photo of a soldier slogging through the sand with his head hung down -but they’re not carrying Yon. The manager wasn’t in, but when I talk to him/her, they should have good answers or they lose a customer.
I have already bought and read the book. If you are a General Petraeus fan, this is a must read. Michael Yon gives some insights and stories about eh General that I have never read or heard anywhere else.
