Cracker-quiddick Fallout Continues To Haunt SnObama
You know Obama’s trailing smoke when even George Will piles on and says Obama’s on his high horse:
Stevenson, like Obama, energized young, educated professionals for whom, Barone wrote, “what was attractive was not his platform but his attitude.” They sought from Stevenson “not so much changes in public policy as validation of their own cultural stance.” They especially rejected “American exceptionalism, the notion that the United States was specially good and decent,” rather than — in Michelle Obama’s words — “just downright mean.”
It’s a good little review of late-twentieth-century liberal intellectuals, but dude: George Will is now calling him a snob. George Will:
Elsewhere, John Fund has a long memory for Obama’s patrician demeanor:
Mr. Obama has a tendency to make such cultural miscues. Speaking to small-town voters in Iowa last year, he asked, “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?”
Glad to see Typical Liberal Arugulance getting some play, but Fund has an even better quibble with this bitter-prattle matter: how much is Obama’s own rhetoric responsible for the Great Embittering?
During the San Francisco episode, Mr. Obama had a throwaway line about how working-class voters fixate on “anti-trade sentiment” in order to vent their frustrations. But isn’t it Barack Obama who has been spending months stirring up “anti-trade sentiment?” He has threatened to yank the U.S. out of the North American Free Trade Agreement unless Canada and Mexico renegotiate it. Last week, he denounced the Colombia Free Trade Agreement.
And then there’s Lileks, who drives home Obama’s odd, off-putting discomfort with America:
I’ve been trying to find the right words for a certain theory, and I can’t quite do it yet. It has to do with how a candidate feels about America – they have to be fundamentally, dispositionally comfortable with it. Not in a way that glosses over or excuses its flaws, but comfortable in the way a long-term married couple is comfortable. That includes not delighting in its flaws, or crowing them at every opportunity as proof of your love. I mean a simple quiet sense of awe and pride, its challenges and flaws and uniqueness and tragedies considered. You don’t win the office by being angry we’re not something else; you win by being enthused we can be something better. You can fake the latter. But people sense the former.
Michelle had him pegged over a week ago, well before he made his fateful remarks to the San Francisco literati, when he was nibbling fancy ham in an upscale Philly deli instead of chowing on a cheesesteak. Several commenters at the time scoffed that this was nothing deeply significant, and if it went no deeper than a preference for fancy food and a bit of a tin ear about how it was received, they would have been right. But Obama’s words showed that that fundamental discomfort-and even disdain–for regular people that his menu had suggested was not just some little flub, but rather a product of a deeply-held belief. The elitism charge has legs. And as Michelle said at the time:
The odor of elitism is like onion breath: Quick to acquire, hard to get rid of.

You can actually upload a photo and personalize your own version of the catchy “O” logo that adorns the Obama campaign. It’s like a Jesus fish for your correspondence with Liberals to let them know you’re an enlightened, progressive hipster and not a bitter, gun-fondling church-attender. Here’s my attempt:
Have fun with that.

Anybody gone into Trinity Church lately and see what they charge for Rev Wright’s hate speeches?
What is overlooked about B Husseins comments in San Fran about us morons; is he thought he was talking off the record. His real feelings came out when he thought he was safe.
There wasn’t even the slightest groan heard from the crowd he was speaking with his messianic tones. ARSCLOCH!
Sorry, Barry is a ARSCHLOCH!
Pennsylvanians are fed up with our elite senators too but we must wait for several years to get them out. The guns were here when we needed them for the revolution. Does Obama know about the revolution and the Cradle of Liberty?
Mr. Will can turn a phrase!
these little incidences form a greater picture of who Obama is as a person. Krathammer said being a snob is a character flaw, and i’m starting to agree.
if Obama can’t avoid offending people in this country of a common culture, then there’s no way i could be comfortable with him traveling around the world speaking off the cuff.
and i don’t want apologies, in fact…i’m learning apologies tend to piss me off more.
Ah, the humble position of public servant, you guys really think Obama will get the hang of it?
TEEEEEEEJ
To paraphrase a famous french refrain:
LET THEM EAT BISCOTTI !!!
But, there’s no way for us to fully comprehend the depth and grand design of the Obamessiah. It’s just beyond us “typical white people”.
/sarc off
Rooster, you’ve absolutely hit it on the head. Heck, even TOS was lol-ing that it was true. One tends to speak their mind when they’re with people who think the same thing. We know many in SF that hate middle America and regular folks.
This seems to come as a surprise to the liberals that we’ve been on to them for sometime. There’s plenty of country club republicans who are annoyed at the regular folks who they feel destroyed their party but I don’t think any of those clowns are running for President. McCain may have grown up in the upper middle class but I’m living proof you don’t get rich by either being in the military or marrying into the military (although my first husband got a nice flight pay bonus). He may now be super wealthy but he got that way through his second marriage.
I truly believe this man is a marxist and follows Marx’s mantra about religion. It was worth his while to join Trinity 20 or so years ago to get street cred with the African Americans in Chi town. Heck, Wright was too much for Oprah as she started out there too but left a few years later.
I stand by my statement that Obama doesn’t really like America as she is now. He wants to change it to a socialist bastion but so doesn’t Hillary. If that upsets some of the liberals sensibilities well too bad. That’s the truth as many of us see it. Liberal toads may call that “idiotic” but as I said before I really don’t care what you think.
After the realization that Obama is a left wing snob sinks in, the next big Ah Ha moment will be that part of his appeal is that he sets of gaydar detectors with his cool, slimness.
Also remember how envoys from Obama’s camp went to Canada and informed them how Obama will campaign against free-trade with Canada but is really for it. I soon expect that with his new Elitist slips that he will campaign “As the everyman and all for Democracy”. But, will send envoys to Kim Jong-il to explain how Obama admires North Korea’s cult of personality and Kim Jong-il absolute power.
Mr. Obama has a tendency to make such cultural miscues. Speaking to small-town voters in Iowa last year, he asked, “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?”
Anybody gone to Whole Foods lately and seen what they charge for caviar? Maybe those small town Pennsylvanians are pissed that they can only afford Cheez Whiz for their crackers.
As they say “IT is what it is”! He is Chicago and anything south of there is, well, just Southern Illinois. There is a world of difference between the two. Alot of hard working people that pay taxes to Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s (D) State of Illinois and most goes to Chicago for “fixin” it up, don’t mind the rest of the state. Why would Obama be any different coming from there?
Those pictures of Obama at the Billionaire Getty estate were so telling! Snobama is a candidate of the rich. God only knows when one of those religious, gun toting middle Americans would have a house big enough to accommodate him and his posse.
Obama seems to be our modern day version of Lamont Cranston.
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!”
Maybe he should start wearing a slouch hat and a black, crimson-lined cloak with an upturned collar.

too soonfor the wrong reasons:Come on! Don’t you know that “cling” is in the bible?
Perhaps Candidate Klinger (you know, the guy who believes in abortion to save the world from the curse of children, the guy who goes nose up at a cheesesteak in favor of expensive pig parts) needs to take what the bible says to heart:
Sure would avoid a lot of trouble.
Max Klinger, meet Barak Klinger.

This is my new snobama logo.
Obama’s formative years were spent in Indonesia and in “one party system Hawaii.” College was spent in liberal LA and NY. Law School at Harvard.
Why is the MSM acting so surprised at his trouble in identifying who middle American’s really are?
I saw this coming like a parade down Main Street.
Obama and Demos OUT OF Touch, OUT of Minds and trying to take over our minds. Here in Texas we cling to our guns and love to go to church.
Re: Whole Foods and the price of arugula
The über-irony of Oh!b♥m♥’s lament is that he’s so chronically uninformed, he didn’t know that there are no Whole Foods stores in Iowa.
Maybe it’s time to retire Oh!b♥m♥ in favor of D’oh-bama.
Comments? Feedback?
Obama calling small town unemployed bitter may have been unpolitic, but it was true. It’s not so bad when politicians sometimes tell the truth, is it?
I haven’t had this much fun watching the Democrat Party since Dan Rather ended up on his behind at the 1968 Chicago convention.
IMHO, “elitisism” is not the correct message to take away from BO’s comments. Rather, he is voicing what he really believes when he talks about “anti-immigrant” and “dislike people that don’t look like them”. That is, white small town America is nothing but a bunch of racists and biggots. Fits perfectly with the victim mentality and pervasive racism he and Rev. Wright espouse.
Break out the Troll-B-Gon.
And talking about Obama and racism…
Your use of the term “unpolitic” is a bit decietful. Obama’s comments have been elitist and condecending which makes his statments unpolitic. Or if one were not trying to gloss over a huge misstep one would say, “commiting political suicide”.
lgm you’re digging deep. Racism indeed. I noticed you didn’t link to any of Rev. Wright’s sermons. How conveeeeenient.

It is becoming very evident the Mr. Obama’s has not mastered the liberal art of crapping on your country so that it makes you smell sweeter.
Waaaaaaaaaaah. Compared to Rep. Davis in terms of intellect and maturity, the congressman was right.
I guess if the only tool in your box is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
Here’s what Robert Johnson, successful businessman and BETCO (Black Enough To Criticize Obama) had to say:
This campaign has such a hair-trigger on anything racial … it is almost impossible for anybody to say anything.
Amen, brutha!
‘bitter’ huh? Why is it only small-town unemployed can be bitter? Have you seen the faces of the ‘boobs not bombs’ crowd? They look very happy. So does ‘rage boy’. How about the sad-sack face of Jimmy Carter? Bitterness? Thy name is liberal.
Obama is uninformed…he doesn’t have to be informed, he’s black.
Obama’s remarks were condescending when he decided to link the word “bitter” to clinging to religion and guns. He made it sound like the only reason these people are religious or stand for their 2nd amendment rights is because they are just bitter.
His comment actually explains his membership in his church perfectly. He has been in a negative church environment for too long if he thinks people are religious because they are bitter.
Obama’s character has come out - and he is not looking good. I would think Democrats would realize this and turn away from him.
Dem apologists can justify Chappaquidick, pooh-poohing away Cracker-quidick is a piece of cake.
kjw33: Roger that! Unfortunately appologies are solely illicited from the Republican side of things. Boy!(ooops!) things just aren’t fair ’round here.
If I were a Demodipstickocrat I would suggest Oblahma get some of this and use it daily.

it’s for your mouth!
PS Buy a case for your “Rev” and Wife.
“lgm you’re digging deep. Racism indeed. I noticed you didn’t link to any of Rev. Wright’s sermons.”
That’s likely because Reverend Wright soundbites have been repeated here ad nauseum; there’s not much need for lgm to (re)cite them. I’m sure we’re all familiar with them by now.
I’m commenting for the first time, although I’ve been reading this site for about a year. I must say, for a group that — based on comments that appear here each day — collectively seems to believe that blacks should stop “complaining,” “dwelling on the past” and “being victims,” it’s ironic that so many can’t seem to get past the anger they feel (and express daily) toward Wright. So much for leading by example.
I just love the way you spin doctors skip the part of clinging to guns and religion, and just exactly how do you know all of small town America is bitter? Now get back up your tree.
How much is the Obama elitism hurting him? Not that much.
PatriotRider said (#31):
There’s no need. Everyone knows the sound bites by heart and nobody wants to know the context.
kjw33 said (#32):
He was not making fun. If you want to know what Obama making fun of someone looks like, look at what he said about Hillary (scroll down to counter punching).
lgm said:
Like when Obama referred to his church as not being “actually particularly controversial”? Sadly, Obama was probably being truthful when he said it. He is so out of touch with America, he probably thinks every preacher teaches (or should) about the “US-KKK-A”.
“Did I strongly disagree with many of his [Wright's] political views? Absolutely - just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.”
Completely out of touch.
I was talking to my preacher the other day about Wright and his sermons. My preacher responded “yeah, I wouldn’t continue going to that church either, if they taught that kind of stuff.” I replied, “No, I don’t think you understand; if I ever sat in a pew and heard this kind of garbage, I would run to the pulpit and rebuke the preacher to his face in front of the entire congregation for not being straight about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 2:14)
Nah, Obama would wet his pants if he had to handle Kent Allard’s .45s. Especially since he’s already proven adept at shooting himself in the foot.
It does, however, suggest a new slogan for his campaign: “Who knows what bitterness lurks in the hearts of men? Obama knows! HAHAHAHAHAHA…”
#38 jenmom:
my nomination for post of the day. you hit the nail on the head.
in hindsight…billary will look like a genius for stringing her campaign on as long as possible. if he keeps this up, he’s got an outstanding chance to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
lgm:
great dodge. why did he say it in sanfran instead of in front of pennsylvanians?
You forget, Mr. Obama and all the Intellectual few…
There’s a lot more “Simple Folk” than there are of you.
So you admit that The Big O is an elitist. See people, he can be taught!
Now we should not feed the troll until after lunch. lgm seems to be full of it.
Well, troll in chief has finally articulated what he really thinks of regular Americans who go to church (although he claims to go to Temple and likes to eat Christian children-that’s not even a funny remark) and own guns. Doesn’t it feel better troll now that you have let us know your true feelings? Unpolitic indeed because you aren’t able to face the truth that your hatred for the military, your hatred for Christians, your hatred for those who own guns makes you a fool. Yes, I could say something else but don’t want to get banned.
We have known for quite sometime what you and your liberal toad friends think-maybe it’s best that the articulate one has opened his $100 a pound ham loving mouth and put his foot in it. The truth will set you free and perhaps now it has. Now, if we can just get you out of that ivory tower and into a real job so you can see how the rest of us have to live.
not to stray too far off topic…but when i leave church i feel refreshed, recharged and ready for anything - good or bad. i generally leave with a smile on my face.
i can’t imagine sitting through Rev. Wright’s hate-speech (and yes, lgm, i’ve listened to whole sermons to get all of the “context” you like to say people ignore) and leaving feeling positive. it’s no wonder liberals and minorities continually feel repressed. when it’s preached to you on a weekly basis…you tend to start believing in it.
think about it…if your mentor (stop and envision WHO this person is to YOU for a minute) told you nothing but how you were being taken advantage of, downtrodden, and bullied…wouldn’t you start believing it? it’s called indoctrination, folks.
it’s no different than the mullahs teaching children in the middle east to hate the “american infidels”.
it’s no different than the polygamists in texas condemning young girls to lives of being breeding stock.
if you’ve never known any different…how or why could you be expected to change? you just don’t know what you don’t know.
the difference is: a whole generation of blacks have been raised post-civil rights. they should know better. i understand it’s important to understand history - those who don’t are condemned to repeat it. but there’s a difference (black elders) of helping your youth understand their roots and making them think those conditions still exist. 40 years and $40B of post-civil-rights social assistance programs have shown results (see also the black man currently waging a pretty significant campaign for president, the black secretary of state, numerous black senior military officers, a black supreme court justice, black congress-persons, doctors, athletes, lawyers, etc…). the time for whining is OVER. do what the rest of hard-working americans do: grab your damn boot-straps and help your damn self.
The repulsion of arrogance.
Obama’s elitism is taking a huge toll on his prospects in the Pennsylvania primary. At InTrade, the share price of “Obama Wins Pennsylvania Primary” had been on the rise until he made the “bitterness” gaffe in San Francisco. Since then, share prices have dropped 50%. The proof is in the data.
Seeing is believing.
As each day passes I get more excited about Nov. McCain will end GOP pork spending (finally) and we will win the house back in 2010. BHO will flame out like Mondale.
If understanding my Constitutional rights as an American citizens and my freedom to keep and bear arms makes me bitter than so be it!
Thanks to our forefathers especially Thomas Jefferson!
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
as well as.
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
I believe in these rights that are GUARANTEED to me!
Does that make me a bitter person?
To me it comes down to whether you’re comfortable with looking down at others or whether it makes you uncomfortable to do so. Clearly, Obama is very comfortable looking down on others, on certain others. He must think a lot of himself. It’s more than self-confidence. Call it elitism, being self-involved, narcissism. I have to say it bugs me quite a bit. I guess that’s the liberal mindset — the govt has to do and think for those many inferior people who can’t do or think for themselves.
You are an idiot, an educated knucklehead!
Being a highly educated moron such as yourself, you know that boy has many meanings. I do believe B Hussein is just as much white as he is black, junior, so where is the racism?
This politician is from the south it could be a part of his mannerism to refer to men that are stupid as a boy.
Much like you littlegirlyman.
The public is starting to get the feeling that Barry-O isn’t as much an American as he is some kind of European upper-crust bureaucrat sent here to lecture us about how we’re running our own country the wrong way.
It’s really interesting…. Obummer’s CYA strategy regarding “Bittergate.” At first, he stridently “clung” to the context of his remarks, then he stated that he may have misspoke and isn’t perfect. When all else failed he said he really was “in touch” with the American people, unlike Shrillary or McCain.
Now, which one is it. How ’bout just an actual apology? Can Obummer manage that? I don’t think it’s right to blame people’s strongly held beliefs in the 2nd amendment or religion or desire for better border enforcement/fairer trade policy on the economy. Whether he knew it or not, Obummer really revealed a lot more about his actual feelings about regular Americans than he’s willing to admit.
You’ll never see this guy just admit that he’s a racist, elitist, condescending, double-talking politician. I mean, that would ruin his whole “change” message, now wouldn’t it?
I just picked up the Liberal Elitist Snob Translation for Middle America Dummies book and translated Obama’s quote “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Surprise, Surprise!
Translation: Atheist illegal aliens that are for strict gun control I want your vote.
Yet, the good representative from KY apologized for his remarks but Obummer can barely manage a “I misspoke” or “I did not speak so elegantly as I should have.” Please tell me the significance of this link? You couldn’t be redirecting yet again, could you, lgm?
Don’t be surprised when you get whiplash, okay?
Down here in Texas, everybody is “boy.” A frequently heard expression is “That boy ain’t right.”
Maybe D’Oh-bama needs some cultural sensitivity training.
Michelle Obama is also a snob. She went to Princeton and then wrote a whole senior thesis about how uncomfortable she felt around white students. If that were the case, what stopped Michelle Obama from going to Howard Law School where she would have been with all African-American students? Instead she chose to go to Harvard Law School, where her classmates were mostly upper crust wealthy white preppies. Obviously she felt at home with fellow country club types. And when Michelle Obama finished law school, she could have worked for a primarily African-American law firm if she wanted to. Instead, she chose the old line, blue blood, preppie firm of Sidley and Austin where most of the lawyers were blue blood Wasps and the clients were big pharmaceutical and insurance companies.
Michelle Obama wants everyone else to “keep it real” while she enjoys her brie and chablis.
Typical Liberal Arugulance. That’s hysterical.
New cartoon. It’s not “the economy, stupid,” it’s the arugulance!
You don’t win the office by being angry we’re not something else; you win by being enthused we can be something better. You can fake the latter. But people sense the former.
Woah, I said almost this same thing while trying to define why (issues aside) I have a problem with Obama to my girlfriend.
I’m proud to see my thoughts on the matter mirror those of Lileks.
re: #67
…and larraby. one wonders how she manages to be “comfortable” around her half-white husband???
which brings me to my favorite campaign slogan thus far…
kjw33 - thanks for the link. Great slogan!
I shop at Whole Foods, but I would never assume others do, too, especially in a part of the country where there are less health food stores. Gimme a break!
And even though I eat many of the same foods the liberal elites eat, I have a different attitude toward midwesterners. I figure we can learn something from everyone and I am certain Midwesterns have some virtues us sophisticated types can learn from…like HUMILITY, faith, a solid work ethic, family, gratitude. These qualities, including an appreciation for those who are a bit different, are prevalent in the leftists I know. God they are pathetic sometimes.
Here’s the bit that worries me from that whole piece. Example #53,927: it’s a friggin’ cult:
In other news, yay for Whack-A-Troll!
It is refreshing to see the rest of the country finally waking up to the Obamination’s penchant for elitism. We bitter under employed self reliant God fearing gun totting knuckle dragging inbred mouth breathers in the sticks are nothing, but xenophobic and hateful people according to this $100 a lb pork eating elitist and his America hating bride. The mask is finally coming off and not a moment to soon.
Obama isn’t worried that that might be all they can afford, he feels superior to anyone who eats Cheese-whiz. Nothing more dangerous than a small-town religous guy with a gun and a cheesesteak sandwich.
As the “proof is in the data”, I have to agree with lgm.
Looking at the 3 polls for which there are comparison data:
Survey USA:
Clinton 54 (-2), Obama 40 (+2)
Rasmussen:
Clinton 50 (+2), Obama 41 (-2)
Quinnipiac:
Clinton 50 (+0), Obama 44 (+0)
None of these changes are statistically significant. Obama may have taken a hit in the momentum he had going in PA, but I would hardly call it taking a “huge toll”.
It’s like getting hit while in a deep sleep. You are awake but not moving fast at first. But rest assured, the one who did the hitting better be moving pretty quickly because there’s gonna be hell to pay.
Given that Mr. “O” failed to outright win any of the delegate rich states like NY, CA, or Tx, and has now permanently alienated the greater part of the Midwest and South, I’d say his chances against McCain in the general are looking bleaker everyday.
Comparing Obama’s verbal gaffe to Chappaquiddick is disrepectful to that poor woman who “drowned” without any proper investigation done on her behalf.
This whole bitter issue will be gone and forgotten by the time Indiana and N.C roll around.
Both McCain and Obama will stick their foot in their mouths multiple more times between now and November.
Obama’s judgement regarding Rev. Wright is the only thing keeping him from winning the election, unless McCain implodes between now and the election, and/or Bush decides to invade Iran with McCain’s support
Go right ahead. As for me I’ll take information markets (i.e., the wisdom of the masses) over opinion polls and punditry any day. Concise reason why here.
First comment (thanks MM!)
To be fair, the OP talked about leftists ability to ignore stuff like this, not comparing them. Re-read the actual words.
BTW, I agree! I have had a jaw-drop moment when my own sister in-law brushed off that her daughter’s boyfriend was beating on the daughter with “Oh, that? That’s a cultural thing.” Lefties can brush off anything from Mary Jo Kopeckne’s death to domestic violence if it fits their template to do so.
The point I really wanted to make though… BHO’s contempt for us surprises me not at all: I have seen this from a local board in my town that reached a decision based only on “we need to keep control of these people” (I was there), to the state rep. who on Worc. County talk radio said that he was glad the state legislature could just ignore initiative petitions because they had given themselves that power back in the 1970s.
The political class despise us. We are lower than worms to them.
Peet
Go to Yahoo.com and type in Barack Obama in the Search Box. Look at what the ALSO TRY comes up with.
Fine. But you might want to recheck InTrade…it looks like he gained it all back. Ummm.
My first post. Thanks, MM for the opportunity to join the fray.
Kudos to those who saw BHO’s elitism long ago. It has just come into focus for me with Bittergate.
Is anyone else out there as surprised as I am at how both BHO and Hillary are turning out to be lousy candidates for the Democratic party? As the Democratic primary continues, I bet the bitterness leaves the church-going gun owners of flyover country and migrates to the arugula-eating stuffed shirts on the liberal coasts.
BO exudes pompous condescension. If I am a “bitter” “have not”, and he is an enlightened “have”, then Im not interested in what he has. I’d rather have my God, my guns, and my patriotism than whatever snake oil BO is selling. Im happy being a bible reading, garlic nosed cracker with a decent bowling score and a tight grouping at the gun range. Im not bitter, Im better. I refuse to be a victim. The only thing I’ll be clinging to is a nice cold iced tea after a hard days work. Something BO knows nothing about. Keep your (victim/ham flavored) koolaid BO, I’m not thirsty.
No one should be shocked at elitism from the left. Ruling class liberals are elitists. They believe that we need their guidance and can barely stumble through life on our own. Working class liberals are bitter people who are unable to leave an economically depressed area for someplace where there are jobs available.
Like say individuals in Western Pennsylvania……..
Too funny! Best tagline of the week. Pass it around; this deserves a permanent place in the blogworld.
