Our NY friends are solid upstate Republicans, but our PA friends are starting to drink the Obama kool-aid. We were in the midst of an intervention, when our waitress came to take drink orders. When she was listing the brews on tap, she mentioned a very good ESB. When one of our PA friends asked what that was, the waitress replied “Extra Special Bitter.” I immediately told our PA friends to “Drink up! If PA goes for Obambi, you’ll need it!”

That’s a nice attempt to distort what he said and render criticism of it invalid. It won’t work.

It’s not Obama saying that people are “bitter” that we draw such offense from. It’s his suggestion explicitly stated belief that such bitterness is the way they come to their opinions on religion, immigration, free trade and gun rights. He clearly believes that it’s impossible for any reasonable human being to disagree with him, anyone who does must have some kind of problem or mental defect.

He is of course badly mistaken. Obama is a gifted salesman and talented huckster, but he’s not the messiah and he’s not nearly smart enough to be able to dismiss the ideas of others’ like that.

The only reason I’m angry when I fill up is that I know the price would be a LOT lower if the liberals in the gummint weren’t jacking the price up the price of fuel by:

    1) restricting supply through preventing drilling in proven domestic reserves,

    2) restricting supply by mandating different types of fuel for each region and season,

    3) restricting supply by mandating the use of government-subsidised ethanol, and

    4) restricting supply by threatening to change tax laws that will discourage investment in the energy industry.

“My background: I’m an educated centrist, and as it were, gun-owner and sometime duck hunter.

On the ‘elitist’ debate: I’ve been amused to see the likes of Bill Kristol, Roger Kimball and Rich Lowry and other conservative commentators so incredibly desperate in their efforts to convince people like me that we’re being looked down upon by Obama — a black guy raised by a single mom who worked as an organizer among the poor of Chicago, etc. etc.

I personally don’t feel in the least that Obama is an elitist. Rather, I feel the elitists are those highly educated, inside-the-beltway weenies like Kristol, the bow-tie wearing Kimball, the UVA grad and prepster Lowry who are tripping over themselves to tell me how offended I ought to feel when I know damn well I’m not offended. Id be shocked if Roger Kimball, Lowry or God knows Bill Kristol know the first thing about hunting ducks, or if they could survive ten minutes in a cold duck blind before dawn, the artery-clogging breakfast that follows or the round of beer and whiskey drinking that goes on the night before.

In my opinion, listening to these folks go on and on about how offended I should be makes me feel a hell of a lot more condescended to than hearing some single throw-away line at a fundraiser. Obama said his thing once; these wankers won’t shut up. It’s as if they think I’m too stupid to figure things out for myself, so they can’t miss an opportunity to tell me how I’ve been slighted. Well sorry, weenies — I just don’t feel slighted, and that’s because I’ll be damned if I’m going to pick a president based on a stupid gaffe when there is a war going on and when the economy is going in the shitter. These guys must really think I’m a moron. “

Instead, they’ll anonymously vote their bitterness by pulling the lever for ABO (anybody but Obambi) and it won’t necessarily be for cHillary. As indicated by Frank Luntz’s post-debate survey, about half the dems indicated they would vote for McVain if their favored Dem is beaten by the other.
