Horror in Knoxville update: The first guilty verdict

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 17, 2008 10:02 AM

newsom-christian-200.jpg

Many of you will recall the terrible murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, which I covered here extensively last year.

The first trial for the first suspected has ended with the first guilty verdict:

The first trial ends with the first guilty verdict in connection with the deaths of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23.

The only one of the five suspects not charged with murder, Eric DeWayne Boyd is guilty of being an accessory, according to the jury.

The jury has spoken, convicting Eric Boyd of two counts.

After five hours of deliberation, they found Boyd guilty of being an accessory after the fact, and concealing a felon, agreeing with the prosecution that he helped hide murder suspect Lemaricus Davidson from police, while failing to report his crimes.

This battle is over, but the victim’s families know the war will be long.

The victims’ families celebrate the word they’ve been waiting to hear for more than a year: Guilty.

Eric Boyd’s conviction today is the first, but family members pray it won’t be the last.

Channon Christian’s father Gary Christian says, “One down, four to go, baby. We got more to go on this one too. Eric boyd’s gonna hear from us.”

What Eric Boyd heard from the jury today will likely mean 15 years in federal prison, after sentencing August 12th.

Next year may bring four more trials, death penalty cases against the four accused murderers.

Even on this day, Chris Newsom’s mother is thinking about that.

Mary Newsom says, “They really, really tortured them beyond a normal killing, so whatever the others get, that’s what they deserve.”

Knoxville Police Sgt. Tim Snodderly says, “This is just a small part of what we’ve got going on. This is just a first step, and we’re extremely happy with the verdict we got today. We’ve got a long way to go but this is a little bit of justice for the family.”

Video of the Newsom and Christian families’ reactions here.

An interview with the jury foreman here.

I’ve got to join the clammer…where in the heck is the MSM on this? I know, too busy showing an “infomercial” on some new liberal book, or interviewing some “victim” of something in some state somewhere. Good to see a guilty on an accessory charge. It means the crime was committed and makes it easier to convict the rest. I hope, since the SCOTUS approved the death penalty, that they get their “just desserts”.

    30pcs,

I’m sure you’re looking at the rhetoric on this subject just as I am, yet you offer to objection to any of it. I understand why; just because you agree with some of these poster’s views on other subjects, you don’t neccesarily agree with all of their views. I understand that completely.

But next time “liberal” doesn’t instantly object to some crazy thing another “liberal” says, keep this thread in mind. That’s all I ask.

For a blog whose theme is so often personal responsibilty, there are way too many people blaming the MSN for not covering this story. Where’s the personal responsibility?

If you really cared about this story, you would have followed it yourself. As other posters have written, it has been discussed at length in the local media, and given the availability of local medias through the internet, its not a difficult story to find. (Google News search the name of the victims, being a start).

But instead of taking personal responsibility for the ambivalence you may feel about this case, you rail against the MSN for not force-feeding it to you.

Personal responsibilty is great when it’s the other person who should be taking that responsibility.

Take them out back of the court house and shoot them. Don’t waste another dime or another breath of air on these monsters. They don’t deserve any more of our attention or time.

The reason the MSM will give for refuses to cover it is because it might raise ‘racial tensions’ (not that that bothered them in the Duke case.)

I like Michelle’s theory – that it is being ignored because it does not fit any Politically Correct agenda — it is not a useful crime.

I think its time to go to the courthouse and get my CCW permit.

Dip, dodge, duck…. Way to not acknowledge the original story at all and rail against people posting about how a biased MSM won’t cover hate crimes of a black on white variety.

Bravo, give yourself a golfclap and a shot of whiskey for making yourself feel inferior to the rest of the posters by slandering them into thinking they don’t really care since they didn’t know about it till today despite extensive “local coverage”. There is extensive “local coverage” of illegal immigration being cracked down on a daily basis here in Phoenix by our good Sheriff Joe that never makes it to mainstream news until the liberal press decides they need a new sob story to run with about illegals being arrested and deported for you know… breaking the law. The rest of the 10′s of daily local stories here in Phoenix where an illegal alien kills a US citizen in a _________ (DUI car crash, home invasion, carjacking, armed robbery, etc) get passed up by the MSM just like this story did.

Back on topic and as originally stated the 4 left to be prosecuted deserve the death penalty.

The MSM should be hung on its own petard for its constant ignoring of the real world and the creation of a world in the MSM’s eyes only

As a Tennessee we have been discussing this crime since day one. It is painfully obvious that the reverse racism exacerbated by the MSM and their desire to maintain the Black community as “victim” far out weighs reporting such a horrific crime. We listened to calls for justice and outcries of racism against the Duke Lacrosse players for a crime that never occurred, for a year or more. Yet when the reality of black on white crime is abhorrently obvious it is swept under the rug. We Caucasians have become numb with either guilt or fear when it comes to speaking plainly about other races. This only allows the destructive behavior that perpetuates the black community to continue. This behavior will not end until we have the guts to speak out against it and demand change.

    Mp chops,

What we take issue with is the obvious bias in the MSM reporting of certain crimes. The non-existent Duke rape vs. the Knoxville murders for example. Had the races been reversed this story would be all over the MSM on a daily basis as was the Duke case.

I could do it and lose not a wink of sleep. No appeal, no whining, no worrying that their food in prison isn’ cooked to their liking…just good, honest puishment the way the Death Penalty was designed to be.

And i have a WalMart just across from me where I can supply all the other Death Rows in this country as well. We can just get this over with. Watch how fast it actually does become a deterrent once people actually start being punished with the sentance they were given and not just dying of old age on Death Row first.

I remember first reading about this story on this site last year. I consider myself a fairly level-headed person in general; one more prone to logic than emotion. That being said, I remember being seized with a very memorable sense of anger and outrage, both at the crime itself and the total ignoring of it by the trash-guzzling major media.
Anyway these scum lost their right to call themselves humans or even animals in my eyes. I hope this punk becomes real cozy with the other prisoners, and I hope the rest fry. I won’t say anything more here as it would become descriptive.

That’s simply not true. Try Google Newsing any of the people involved and you’ll get numerous articles regarding this case from a variety of sources. Local news doesn’t exist anymore for those willing to seek it out, and it’s not that difficult of a search.

However, most users chose not to do that. Most users only care about the case because it’s convenient for them to. Do you truly believe that if Michelle Malkin didn’t post this, most users would have known about it’s outcome, despite the fact that there were news articles written about it? No, they wouldn’t have because they truly don’t care about this case or the people involved any more than they can use it to further their own anti-MSN or anti-black comments.

There are numerous comments talking about how “outraged” a commenter is about the case, and thanking Michelle for updating them on it, but how outraged can a person really be if they didn’t bother to follow up? Isn’t this the same as the criticism leveled at Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton? ‘They only comment when the case is popular, but once it’s not, you never hear anything from them?’

There’s such an over-dependence on people being told what to care about. Yes, the MSN does it, and the main stream blogs do it too. This is just one of the many prime examples.

(By the way, another man was kicked off a plane for praying. Since Michelle has often run praying-in-plane pieces before, I thought I’d might add one:

It’s not as if the Legal System deliberately tortures the victims families, there is just no other way of making money with this thing. During this year thousands of billable hours of “research” will be done. As if this was the first murder to ever go to trial. Hundreds of briefs will be filed and carted from one legal building to another. It is just a shame that victims and family are dishonored with this processes but it is necessary. Ask any legal authority and you will get a long winded explanation….and we will all say ….” Oh Right, I guess it has to be that way…This will continue until some point…..possibly where it will take 10 more years to get to trial…perhaps We the People will remember that WE empower this system and it is up to us to make it administer JUSTICE.
Who was it that said…Justice delayed is Justice denied ….that is the Truth.
