How dare they explore questions of character, truthfulness, and judgment?
Don’t you know you’re supposed to do the Schoolmarm thing or the Suck-Up thing or the Bogus Plant thing?
Don’t you know you’re supposed to just let the candidates bloviate about Compassion or Global Warming or Diversity or some other MSM-designated Important Issue?
Don’t you know you’re supposed to ask the same, old, recycled softball questions in order to allow the candidates to recite the same, old, recycled answers about their health plans, their housing plans, their Iraq withdrawal plans?
Why, this just proves the MSM is in cahoots with Fox News! (Or “Fix News,” as the pastor who shall not be named likes to call it.)

I though this was the best debate of all 215,854 of them. It’s not supposed to be a pander session. And watching the dynamic between Stephanopolous and Hillary is fascinating. He fawned all over her in the book he wrote after leaving the White House. I think the book ends with the two of them weeping while saying goodbye. I’m completely serious.
Michelle, this is the perfect storm.
ABC is treating the Jesus Obama vs. Sir Edmund Hillary race, as if one or both contenders was an evil Republican. The scrutiny that heretofore was reserved for said evil Republican has by virtue of the MSM’s one trick pony nature, been brought to bear upon the Democrats.
It’s a Battle Royale! It’s Lib-o-mania I. I hope there are many to come.

Anyone can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? You can say anything you want about the economy, world peace, and other such crap, but when you have

b) a wife who is not proud of her country
c) an economic policy that sounds very socialist
d) fabricated tales of heroism just to look good
that makes everything you say suspect as your character is suspect.
The MSM are right (a first?) to be asking such questions. Until we can pin down exactly what kind of character these presidential candidates have, anything they can promise regarding the economy, health care, world peace, etc is worth nothing.
I don’t see the problem. They’re already 1/3 the way there and the remaining 2/3 shouldn’t be too difficult to handle.

It was nice to read about a useful debate. I can’t believe all of the left-wing comments elsewhere about how the debate should have been about ‘the important issues’ such as GW, economics, etc.
Considering that those topics have been covered by both candidates extensively (as far as they are willing to go into detail, that is, so as to not overcommit to anything specific) and the importance of the criticisms brought up, I just can’t understand it.
I wonder, will Obama consider Osama’s crimes to be too far into the past by the end of his term, and invite him over for a tea party and discussion? Perhaps for the Unabomber? That was a while back.

After Watching the Debate, I thought to myself, Wow Charlie Gibson, you really gave it to them. Finally someone asking questions we all wanted to know and politicians doing the same aversive techniques that keeps us wondering if a third area exist in the spectrum of yes/no questions. You know a kind of dark matter.
I also was wondering, maybe I’m just too young to understand these things, but when you’re running against someone isn’t it best not to say they can win in November? I mean isn’t the point of Hillary running against Barack is to say why she is better than him. Instead of answering questions like, do you think Barack can win in November and her reply was
Hillary, you’re suppose to say something like this.
“No, I do not think that he can win and that’s why I am asking democratic voters to surround me so we can take down McCain in the fall.”
Saying Yes you think he can win, then saying you can do a better job is quite a silly statement. You’re suppose to put doubt in those undecided and pull attention from those engulfed in Barack and make them wonder, huh, maybe he can’t win. Thanks Hillary for the new Barack Slogan:

The purple-faced outrage at ABC for not merely applying another coat of grease to the candidates to enable their slide into the White House is a thing to behold.
A good thing was done for the country, I think. I’m just astonished that Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos had something to do with it!
What next? The Second Coming? Jack Cafferty with a rational observation?

I was reading the comments last night at KOS and HufPo and they were already crying like children forced to eat their vegatables. Apparently the candidates didn’t have a chance to explain their detailed positions on education, global warming, health care and puppy dogs. (For, against, for, for.) It’s just not fair!

The moderators were bad. They kept the debate focused on gaffes rather than policy. Instead of debating health care, Iraq, jobs, education, & whatever, they went back and forth on “would you support him/her if nominated?, can she/he beat McCain?,” etc.
As for asking a Fox News question, Fox is not “conservative” in ideology, it’s an organ of the Republican party. A Fox question is not designed to elicit information of interest to conservatives, it’s designed to make Democrats look bad.
It was fun watching Obama squirm all night. After months of softballs, he had the “deer in the headlights” thing going on with substantive questions. ABC has never been as far left as NBC and CBS. Hats off to them for asking real questions.
If the nutroots thought that was tough, wait until their empty suit candidate has to go up against McCain. It’s going to be fun to watch.

It was fun to watch Clinton and Obama squirm and listen to all of the glottal stops, as they tried to formulate answers. I couldn’t believe Clinton actually admitted that she said something that she knew not to be true, when asked about sniper fire in Bosnia.

I checked out some of the liberal sites last night and the comments definitely were not family friendly nor suitable for posting on a public forum.

Well, kudos to ABC.
The candidates were so “off message” in this debate and so bumfuzzled with some of the questions, that it raises the distinct possibility that the rumors regarding prior debates were true, e.g., the candidates received advance copies of the questions to be posed.
And Obama, without a script or teleprompter, tends to let his true beliefs show through the carefully crafted veneer. At least he remembered not to make any sudden moves…

Let them cry. I finally saw B. Hussein Obama admit that he didn’t care what the pullout would do. The Commander in Chief makes the orders and the Generals follow. Coming out of the mouth of a person who has never even served in his high school JROTC, that is one very scary statement. It’s his way or no way, and that will literally cost us thousands of lives on the pull out while making the value of the lives lost in getting where we are today in Iraq valueless. Not to mention leaving the Iraqis out to dry so that Iran can slaughter them and take over the country.

That was by far the best debate I have seen. Not because the candidates were so brilliant, but because they were actually asked the questions that many Americans want to hear. An A+ for ABC. Never thought I would live to see that!

I actually was shocked at the questions asked by ABC. It may have been a fluke but it was a great debate (as those things go).
If they can’t handle ABC, how will they handle fox? Ig they can’t handle FOX how can they handle IRAN??????

I agree with #67 – the first debate where someone recognized that character and integrity does matter.
I have to say, I never expected this of ABC. No wonder the liberals are up in arms.
The liberals say they wanted issue questions – well if the candidate talking doesn’t have a tested character under file, what’s the point of them answering anything.
How the heck are Hillary and Barack going to give out $5,000 to each child, free health care, support 20 million illegals, give free college education and all the other freebies they’ve promised if they aren’t going to raise taxes on people making less than $200,000?
If the candidates can’t answer questions about the contradictions across the campaign trail, why believe a word they say?
I was stunned that Hillary admitted she lied about Bosnia. Of course it was obvious, but so unlike a Clinton.
One thing that is very clear. If it wasn’t for the freedom of speech here on the “bloggosphere” and talk radio, these questions would never have been asked. Just a few years ago Hillary would be picking out curtains for the White House.
I don’t quite agree with MM here, although I am of two minds.
Sure, I enjoyed seeing Marxist, anti-American, race hatred enabler Obama get pummeled by the moderators.
But, OTOH, I think that ABC went way over the line in terms of what debates are expected to be. They turned the first hour into a contentious news conference of the aggressive sort that the MSM treats the WH to every day. So although I think all those challenges to Obama are legitimate concerns of voters, I also think that ABC, dwelling exclusively on those sorts of gotcha issues for almost an hour and doing it in such an unbalanced way to the detriment of Obama…I think it was an effort of ABC to inject themselves into the campaign and create a big buzz which would profit themselves. It just was not the forum to engage in such an unbalanced bash fest against one of the candidates.
About the only thing that I can say in defense of ABC is that candidates are generally insulated from tough and persistent questioning out on the campaign trail. So the debates are the only opportunity for the press to really get at them. Nonetheless, it was a media mugging.
If the dipsticks wanted to hear the same old BS all they need to do is replay all 99 other debates between the two…….
