Nutroots go ballistic: We demand a stultifyingly dull debate! Or else!

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 17, 2008 01:33 AM

Oh, the left-wing bloggers are in high dudgeon over the Democrat debate.

How could ABC News do it? Behold the teeth-gnashing. And hair-pulling. And foot-stomping.

How dare the ABC moderators ask questions about topics that are, you know, topical?

How dare they ask questions that–gasp!–conservatives are asking.

How dare they explore questions of character, truthfulness, and judgment?

Don’t you know you’re supposed to do the Schoolmarm thing or the Suck-Up thing or the Bogus Plant thing?

Don’t you know you’re supposed to just let the candidates bloviate about Compassion or Global Warming or Diversity or some other MSM-designated Important Issue?

Don’t you know you’re supposed to ask the same, old, recycled softball questions in order to allow the candidates to recite the same, old, recycled answers about their health plans, their housing plans, their Iraq withdrawal plans?

Why, this just proves the MSM is in cahoots with Fox News! (Or “Fix News,” as the pastor who shall not be named likes to call it.)

Charles Gibson is Rush Limbaugh’s puppet!

George Stephanopoulos is a traitor!

The nutroots campaign against ABC has begun. A Daily Kossack fumes:

President Barack should pull their Broadcasting License…We expect Objectivity George! We’re Watching you!

If they can’t have back their stultifyingly dull Democrat debates, dammit, they are going to get all Rumpelstiltskin and jump up and down ’til they burn a hole in the ground.

No more pesky questions about candidates’ lies and shady associations.

Call in Suzanne Malveaux and let’s get back to “Do you prefer diamonds or pearls?”

Michelle, this is the perfect storm.
ABC is treating the Jesus Obama vs. Sir Edmund Hillary race, as if one or both contenders was an evil Republican. The scrutiny that heretofore was reserved for said evil Republican has by virtue of the MSM’s one trick pony nature, been brought to bear upon the Democrats.
    It’s a Battle Royale! It’s Lib-o-mania I. I hope there are many to come.
Liberals fighting amongst themselves, and clearly exposing the NOW FRACTURED, special interest, formerly co-dependant natue of Democrat policies.
If only Jesus Obama had realized that it wasn’t “his turn”, all this dirty Dem laundry airing could have been avoided, and Rodham could have been Coronated as the first Black female President.

Watch out.. The Dems will cut each other to ribbons now but once the nomination is made they will unify and turn that hate filled propagand machine on the GOP. Of course, this year, they are in a quandry because McCain is one of them. What the MSM is doing to Hillary and Barack is a warm up excersise for the next few months.

If the GOP would simply fight a campaign instead of rolling over and taking the insults without answer (as the RNC has done in every presedential race since Regan defeated Mondale), not only would we actually win but the light of truth would fall on the Democrats and show them for the devious communist wannabees they are.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the health care and mortgage crises, the overall state of the economy and dozens of other pressing issues had to wait for their few moments in the sun as Obama was pressed to explain his recent “bitter” gaffe and relationship with Rev. Wright (seemingly a dead issue) and not wearing a flag pin — while Clinton had to answer again for her Bosnia trip exaggerations.

Anyone can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? You can say anything you want about the economy, world peace, and other such crap, but when you have
    a) dozed through 20 years of hate preaching
    b) a wife who is not proud of her country
    c) an economic policy that sounds very socialist
    d) fabricated tales of heroism just to look good
that makes everything you say suspect as your character is suspect.

The MSM are right (a first?) to be asking such questions. Until we can pin down exactly what kind of character these presidential candidates have, anything they can promise regarding the economy, health care, world peace, etc is worth nothing.

It was nice to read about a useful debate. I can’t believe all of the left-wing comments elsewhere about how the debate should have been about ‘the important issues’ such as GW, economics, etc.

Considering that those topics have been covered by both candidates extensively (as far as they are willing to go into detail, that is, so as to not overcommit to anything specific) and the importance of the criticisms brought up, I just can’t understand it.

I wonder, will Obama consider Osama’s crimes to be too far into the past by the end of his term, and invite him over for a tea party and discussion? Perhaps for the Unabomber? That was a while back.

Finally someone asking questions we all wanted to know and politicians doing the same aversive techniques that keeps us wondering if a third area exist in the spectrum of yes/no questions. You know a kind of dark matter.

I also was wondering, maybe I’m just too young to understand these things, but when you’re running against someone isn’t it best not to say they can win in November? I mean isn’t the point of Hillary running against Barack is to say why she is better than him. Instead of answering questions like, do you think Barack can win in November and her reply was

Yes. Yes. Yes. I think I can do a better job, obviously that’s why I’m here.”

Hillary, you’re suppose to say something like this.
“No, I do not think that he can win and that’s why I am asking democratic voters to surround me so we can take down McCain in the fall.”

Saying Yes you think he can win, then saying you can do a better job is quite a silly statement. You’re suppose to put doubt in those undecided and pull attention from those engulfed in Barack and make them wonder, huh, maybe he can’t win. Thanks Hillary for the new Barack Slogan:

Yes He Can, Even Hillary thinks so.

They turned the first hour into a contentious news conference of the aggressive sort that the MSM treats the WH to every day. So although I think all those challenges to Obama are legitimate concerns of voters, I also think that ABC, dwelling exclusively on those sorts of gotcha issues for almost an hour and doing it in such an unbalanced way to the detriment of Obama…I think it was an effort of ABC to inject themselves into the campaign and create a big buzz which would profit themselves. It just was not the forum to engage in such an unbalanced bash fest against one of the candidates.

About the only thing that I can say in defense of ABC is that candidates are generally insulated from tough and persistent questioning out on the campaign trail. So the debates are the only opportunity for the press to really get at them. Nonetheless, it was a media mugging.

Obama whips out a copy of the Constitution and starts writing over it.

And Hillary as well. I told my husband that she really locked up the Code Pink vote, by saying she doesn’t care if the military commanders say the region will be destabilized, she’s pulling out anyway. Make me wanna puke.

by the way, was SarahAnnie talking to you last night on NB? :) that’s me.

Charlie Gibson and his sidekick George George Stephanopoulos(aka Jesse Katsopolis, Have Mercy!) were on target last night. Did you notice the numerous shots of Chelsea. Everytime they shot over to her, I jumped out of my seat and was wondering if I was watching a debate or political horror movie. Numerous Puns intended.

If trolls are not fed, they will find another venue that provides nourishment. Especially those trolls who have gone from drinking the kool aid to snorting it in powdered form.

As to the topic at hand, I disagree that the issues raised were “gotcha” issues. They go the very heart of the candidates’ character and integrity. Scripted speech delivered with the aid of a teleprompter provide an opportunity for a candidate to appear to be all things to all people while masking their true character and beliefs.

Are honesty and integrity no longer important? Does a candidate’s TV persona and charisma trump their true mettle?

And the issues raised are more than soound bites of “mistakes”. The issues reflect a stunning departure between what we are being told and what the candidates actually believe. In that department, Obama is the clear leader over Hillary. He’ll immediately pull troops out of Iraq, but his advisors say he’ll leave a “quick reaction force” in place that happens to be twice the number of troops we have maintained in Korea for 50 years. He says he will obliterate NAFTA, while telling our trading partners in secret to ignore his campaign promises. He believes the right to bear arms is an individual right under the Constitution, yet he believes that government entities at all levels can impose restrictions on those rights that have no equivalent with other individual rights such as religion and speech. He states he does not accept money from corporations (which is illegal) and special interests, yet at least half of all funds he has raised have been through bundlers who just happen to be lobbying for their own interests. He denounces his pastors rhetoric and asks people to believe that in over 20 years of associating with Jeremiah Wright, he never heard a discouraging word. He claims to be a staunch ally of Israel, yet surrounds himself with advisors who are decidely anti-Israel (by the way, Hamas just came out in support of Obama).

The questions and issues raised in the debate are VERY relevant. Character and integrity DO count. If a slick presence in front of a camera is all we need, we would be better to look to Hollywood for our presidential candidates rather than government.

Yes, the questions asked were gotcha questions, but they had to be asked, since the candidates’ songs and dances were too much even for ABC News. My advice to Hillary and Hussein is, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubts.

And watching the dynamic between Stephanopolous and Hillary is fascinating. He fawned all over her in the book he wrote after leaving the White House. I think the book ends with the two of them weeping while saying goodbye. I’m completely serious.

Now, certainly you don’t think there was hanky panky going on. Not with a Clinton. ;=0

He is brilliant, though I don’t know what your problem with his face is. His brilliance is that he keeps things simple. For example it was the “cling” to religion and guns that was the problem with Obama’a statements, not the use of bitter.
    Another great commentator is Schaffley.
