The MSM poor taste award of the week
It’s the one war the Left and the media do want to win: The “war on global warming.”
And they’ll appropriate and trivialize any real war imagery they please in pursuit of eco-propaganda–good taste and respect for veterans be damned!

Flashback: Here’s a proper adaptation of Iwo Jiwa imagery to make a salient editorial point that honors the Iwo Jima legacy:

Semper Fi David. Make a mushroom cloud sized one!!
I just finished reading Richard Newcomb’s classic book “Iwo Jima” and knowing about the heroism of the men who climbed Mount Saribachi and then seeing Time Magazine liken the ecology issue to those brave men is truly sickening. Those men were warriors not Berkeley wimps. For Time to compare a bunch of flower power creampuffs to the heroes of Iwo Jima is sickening.
But I am not surprised at Time Magazine. This was the magazine that had a decades long obsession with destroying Ariel Sharon. Sharon represented everything that Time Magazine hated. He was an Israeli general who didn’t apologize for being a tough Israeli. Time claimed that there was a secret report proving that Sharon was a murderer. Eventually Time admitted that its reporters had concocted the whole thing.

Forget squids, never…. pull up a rock and light the cigar…. pollute that sky!
When there are hundreds of million cars spewing fumes into the sky, when the Brazilians have cut down a large percentage of the Amazon rain forest, when China pours megatons of soot into the air from burning coal -
I don’t need a scientist to tell me that it MUST be affecting the atmosphere and climate in some way.
So the problem is that corrupt politicians have taken over the issue as theirs.
To hell with them. This is the same situation that has allowed Sharpton/Jackson/Farrakhan and the despicable CAIR to have emerged as self-appointed representives to the media for real constituencies, with genuine needs. We would be much better served if the lazy/underfunded media could look past the aggressive hacks who are allowed to jump out in front of the issue every time.
There is a genuine POLLUTION problem – and it’s being neglected because the wrong people are in front of the cameras.
This old scout can’t be called an environmentalist anymore – but I’m proud to be a Conservationist.
I’m making light of things , but the point is this; I’ll not let Soros sotted Gore engorged leftists and eco snobs tear down the Republic. It’s not going to happen. Soros and the GW crowd have to be engaged and defeated.
Old Scout..
Cutting down the rainforest is justified because they are turning that land into farmfield for ethanol corn crops..
First, my greetings to JDinTX, whose father landed on Iwo. No words for how incredible that is. Your father was a man’s man.
Second, I’ve been mad as hell about environmentalism since the idiots came after the logging industry two decades or more ago. Now, climate change…don’t get me started.
You will hear this from me first. The future of the WWII legacy (my father’s) is being laid out. The liberal s will morph, change and pervert our sacred history, especially the WW II narrative, to fit their own world view. It will begin with down-sizing the importance of our national efforts to defeat fascism in that war. (WTF is “war against ‘military aggression’ “?)
I only hoped this evil historical buffoonery would wait until the Greatest Generation had passed from the scene. Now, they are jumping the gun. Guess what? This generation whose fathers fought the war are still here. And we remember…
Global warming is a joke, and we are laughing at you people that believe in it.
Yup, they are highly motivated and financed and they aren’t going away. The out come of this war is crucial. We must win.
KCK – kinda like they did to my generation in Vietnam. When they saw that was successful, they are now moving back in history. Never again!
take a look at this lil gem…
climate tax
Not enough credit can be given the WWII soldiers. My grandfather tried to enlist right after Pearl Harbor, but was classified 4F (that means unsuitable, for a host of reasons. In my grandfather’s case, bad hearing). In that day and time, being 4F was humiliating almost beyond belief. In fact, many young men so classified committed suicide rather than live with being 4F. Can you magine today’s generation of young people having that sense of obligation to duty to their country? My grandfather eventually worked for the sante Fe railroad, and felt he was helping the war effort that way, but quietly carried the shame of being 4F to the end of his life.
sante Fe = Santa Fe
Marshall Russ, please do not get me wrong. I see this objective as a short term ploy; however, I see a much darker, longer range objective in the global warming crisis. In the 60’s, groups hijacked the civil rights movement and turned it into a “crisis” and through rioting, intimidation, and other fascist measures gained control of our universities and much of our government. The result was JFK followed by an even more sinister LBJ (pushing FDR’s New Deal even further down our throats) in the white house and a shift to the left by ALL politicians (exhibit the RINOs that we have today who came of age during the 60s). Only the late, great Reagan was able to steer the party back on a conservative course. I believe that global climate change is being viewed as the next “crisis” that will enable a Liberal president to gain control of the white house and exercise fascist tactics at all levels of government.
In short, I am not “disagreeing” with you; simply trying to articulate that this is even a much bigger problem if left unchecked.
I’m with you on that, brother!
Sorry, I left out that many, many of our young people do indeed share the same sense of duty to country. This is evidenced by the record enlistments in our volunteer military. Sadly, most of the left does not share this commitment, which is the one of the points I should have made.
And we all now how much the Republican candidate has done for veterans.
***vomit***
I teach an AP US History course, and all of my students were required to read “Flags of our Fathers.” If you haven’t read it, it’s a great book – I highly recommend it.
I showed my students the photograph of the cover, and they were enraged.
I read them lgm’s ridiculous comment:
Out of the mouths of babes:
One of my 17-year-old kids said, “Well, we waited two years before we entered the war, and only then because we were attacked on our own soil. And if you want to talk about military aggression, let’s talk about how Ralph Ignatowski (one of the Marines in the book) was tortured on Iwo.”
Another student said, “I think if the people in Nanking could choose American soldiers or Japanese ones, they’d want us every day of the week.”
The cover of this dead tree magazine offends me. My Marine Corps uniform should not be disrespected in this manner. How dare they make us out to be a bunch of tree huggers! Only 3 of those Marines survived to tell their story. In my opinion, Time Magazine wants to trivialize the sacrifices of these brave men.
Actually, the Mt. Suribachi comparison makes perfect sense to a leftist brain. Like lgm illustrates with his comments, they really can’t understand why anyone would object to trivializing and mocking one of the defining moments of our nation’s military heritage.
Ann Coulter provided the Rosetta Stone allowing us to understand how leftists comprehend “war” when she wrote:
“We finally give liberals a war on ‘fundamentalism,’ and they won’t fight. They would, but it’d put them on the same side as the United States.”
Leftists *can* be mobilized for Total War, but only as long as the “enemy” is either:
(1) unrelated to any actual military threat to America or its national interest, or
(2) their domestic political and cultural opposition.
Time’s perversion of the Marines’ accomplishment and sacrifice on Iwo Jima fits perfectly with the criteria above. After all, “Climate Change” is easy to declare “war” on, because it doesn’t shoot back (and as a bonus, you don’t have to risk your standing in “world opinion” by “standing up” to it).
By waging war on “Climate Change,” can get the same sense of pride as those who have participated in a real Great Crusade, without having to actually do anything – except call upon others to give up their way of life (remember, liberals believe that there is no sacrifice too great to call upon others to make).
The three hallmarks of leftist thinking are that it’s born of ignorance, steeped in wishful thinking, and focused on irrelevancy. Accordingly, I’m certain that from a leftist perspective whoever drew up that cartoon thought he or she was being brilliantly clever:
- Fighting imaginary enemies instead of real ones: check.
- Belittling the real achievements of the military: check.
- Feeling morally superior without having to do anything to merit it: check.
- Communicating in terms of emotional symbols instead of logic or evidence: check.
So I’ve no doubt that the Time illustrator is probably honestly baffled why anyone would object to the passive-aggressive mindset behind the cartoon. Surely it’s intended audience (i.e., fellow-leftists) wouldn’t see anything wrong with it…
I can picture two fiddler crabs sitting on a rock watching the incoming tide and asking each other what they did to cause this catastrophe.
Well, darn. I thought you were finally starting to show some sense, until after that point.
Ordinary Coloradan, spot on. It should be engraved over the blackboard of every science classroom in America.
On April 18th, 2008 at 1:25 pm,
Well, I signed that petition, post haste.
AJ, you might want to double-check how you link those things next time. It pops up with your e-mail showing.
A hell of a lot more than the leftists?
TOS – at least he IS a veteran – can you say the same for the two wannabes in the Dem party?
August 2001
McCain votes against increasing the amount of cash available for veterans’ medical care
March 2004
McCain votes against creating a reserve fund for veterans’ medical care
March 2006
McCain votes against increasing veterans’ medical services funding
May 2006
McCain votes against additional funding to the VA for health care facilities
September 2007
McCain votes against the Webb Amendment, which would have provided for adequate periods of rest between deployments to Iraq
Now do a little research and see how the “two wannabes” voted on those.
Don’t you see what these libtards have done? They’ve replaced the love and reverence that one is supposed to have for God and the country and the flag with a tree. The hippies have grown up!
Looking at that nonsense is enough to make me want to start a forrest fire!
Do they know or care how many people have died for the flag that they’ve so shamelessly replaced with a stupid tree?
TOS – never said he was perfect – just a veteran. I know Obummer has never been in the service, and I know for a fact how the Clintons treat the hired help. I place less emphasis on votes than I do on character. Of the three, regardless of how I feel about him, personally, McShame has more character than the other two put together.
I have written a letter to the Editor at Time Magazine, and I encourage others to do the same.
You can reach them at letters@time.com.
Here is my letter:
Subject: Iwo Jima Vs. Treemo Jima
Dear Editor,
I find it utterly appalling that you would (poorly) Photoshop the image of the heroes raising the flag at Iwo Jima with the heroes raising a tree. I’ve been around long enough to know that Time’s “news”-base is very liberal, but don’t you think that you’ve crossed the line? You have disgraced the members of the Armed Services, and you have dishonored the memory of those men! Couldn’t you have found a more tasteful way to get your point across? I find it dissatisfying that you feel the need to slam our military (who is looking out for you, by the way) at every turn!
Viewing that atrocity on your cover is enough to make me want to start a forrest fire.
If you want to save the planet and the trees I have a simple solution for you: publish your “work” online.
I promise you there will be a lot less rubbish that way!
Disgustedly,

gollumclone #8, Walter Cronkite was around in WWII. He
servedhindered and slanderedwiththe troops in WWII as war correspondent.expat said (#75):
Try to explain, in words. This is a blog where people express themsleves. Are you worried that if you explain your feelings others will call you little girly man?
Global warming deniers are like Chamberlain with their thousands of excuses why the gathering storm is not dangerous. Gore is like Chruchill. He will be recognized as having seen the danger.
Someone else had the same idea, only replacing “fiddler crabs” with “Reverends Sharpton and Robertson” and “rock” with “couch”. Then you have the new Al Gore commercial! Which still makes me wanna puke.

#126 lgm,
Then you advocate a pre-emptive strike against Iran because they are enriching uranium and developing long range missiles, right?
North Korea and Pakistan actually have nukes and are hostile towards the U.S., so of course you would strike first, right?
Gore may be like Chruchill but never Churchill. The comparison of questioners to Chamberlain assumes the calling them people with blinders on and a feel good attitude. That is wrong and disingenuous at best. Gore is Chicken Little more than not. We who doubt him and his ilk are more closely in harmony with the Earth because we know we will never be so powerful or arrogant to assume we can hurt it. We don’t close our eyes to geological and meteorological evidence that refutes the GW crowd. If anything our eyes are far more open than a Chamberlain. The real danger is the breaking down of a successful capitalist country and the breaking down of a society into middling, non producers and lazy people.
If you support Gore and his minions, I guarantee an Atlas Shrugged reaction. Let’s see you live in THAT world.
A better analogy would be “global warming activists” are Don Quixote fighting windmills, and “deniers” are the townspeople telling their kids to stay away from the crazy guy who sees stuff that’s not there.
Meanwhile, Mother Gaia is gearing up to destroy us all from below.
Stop plate techtonics!!
Gore wouldn’t make a pimple on Churchill’s butt
lgm @#126 has a point. If we are melting the ice caps on Mars…
Idiot. Do some reaserch. Of the original (almost 500) scientists who signed on to the I.P.C.C. only 12 will still stand on the idea that GW is caused by man.
Here is a brief conclusion to the report that states the human factor as I know you will not look it up yourself.
The Attribution Question
Note that the IPCC’s 2007 report has reduced its estimate of the entire anthropogenic contribution to climate change since 1750 to just 1.6 watts per square metre. This is little more than 1% of the natural greenhouse effect, which contributes 20C to global temperatures. Since 1% of 20C is 0.2C, it is legitimate to deduce that about three-quarters of the 0.8C rise in temperature over the past 100 years is attributable to natural causes.· Solanki et al. (2005) have reported that in the past 50 years the Sun has been hotter, for longer, than at any time in the previous 11,400 years.· Khilyuk and Chilingar (2006), from a geological perspective, have calculated that the total climatic influence of humankind to date amounts to a warming of about 0.1C. · Buentgen et al. (2006) have concluded that the anthropogenic effect on climate has been so small that it cannot be clearly distinguished from the background of natural climatic variability. These conclusions in the peer-reviewed literature differ startlingly from the UN’s conclusion that “most of the observed increase in globally-averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely [to have been] due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse-gas concentrations.”

You know what the sun is right lgm?
Sorry for the long post.
Soap – you’re right up there with my all-time favorite people. Way ta go!
Back at you cpodug!
When you can tell me precisely what the planet’s temperature/climate is supposed to be, I might listen to you.
Any cursory review of the Earth’s geologic/climatic history will demonstrate that the Earth was uninhabitable by humans for the bulk of its existence. The bulk of the remaining time was tropical practically to the poles. And let us not mention the five or more mass extinction events! The little tiny swath of time we humans have been occupying space on this planet is virtually inconsequential in terms of the Earth (if the age of the Earth is represented as a 12 hour clock, man’s existence represents about 7 seconds). Heck, during the last interglacial, the fossil record show that sea levels were 15 -18 FEET above current levels. And the watermelons are trying to get us excited about a couple of centimeters.
Yet some of us, the Chicken Little Gore Lickers, have decided that the current climate conditions are the way it is supposed to be, and we must go against nature to preserve it. Puh-leeze! Tell Gore to get a degree in science (as opposed to the Cs and Ds he got in college science) and come back and talk to us.
Sorry. The universe may have different plans.
See Ordinary Coloradan’s excellent post (#52) for more realistic (read that: non liberal) details.
It is even more fun to use hard facts against liberals and watch them squirm. You should try it. Start by looking into a mirror…
But you didn’t really expect him to understand the big words, did you?
cpo,
Like science and research?
That is why lgm prefers Math. It is a 4 letter word and has been made fuzzy so even he can teach it. For the rest of us:
1+1 still equals 2 – not what makes us feel better about ourselves.
How many trees were killed to print that rag?
Soap
You rock, sir…. good research and fact presentations. I, on the other hand, would have had to cut and paste ” The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming”. ( I love those PIG books!)
Thanks Barry, I noticed that also too late though.
Churchill was a ferocious debater and wasn’t afraid to take on those that disagreed. Gore won’t debate or put together a team that would because they are afraid to look at evidence that contradicts what they are saying.
MNUSMCDavid,
I did cut and paste, just the end. If lgm had to read the whole report and the science behind it, his head would explode! I actually did a boo-boo. This is from a report that pulls the I.P.C.C. report apart )and the U.N. as well). The I.P.C.C. report is in it and so are their own overstatements. I cherry picked for sure but, it was too long to post the whole thing.
Soap
You still did great. I’m glad we can cut and paste because I have a veritable ton of stuff that can destroy any Soros based argument. Yes, I believe Soros is the mother head of the Hydra that is socialism in the US.
Soap: Game, set, match. Thank you.
Consensus is NOT Proof.
If I am not mistaken isn’t Time printed on paper that comes from tree’s.
Seems a bit hypocritical to tout your “eco-friendliness” or try to make a environmental point while killing trees to provide people with bird cage liners.
Early this morning there was an earthquake in SE Illinois. Although it measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, damage was minimal. What I would like to ask all environmentalists is “What are you losers doing about GLOBAL SHAKING?” Drop this global warming hoax and get to work solving the Global Shaking Crisis before the Earth disintegrates!
ACT NOW! WE CAN’T AFFORD TO WAIT!
My wife let her subscription lapse a few years ago after they did a hit piece blurb on Pope John Paul II.
Unfortunately, after reading the responses to the “Catholic Elite” post I think that might make their stock go up around here.
It’s just unbelievable. I’m so tired of the “Save The Planet” mantra and all the companies tripping over another splashing green paint over their ads — and liking it to child welfare too. In schools you learn if you’re green that makes you a “better caring person.” Hey, the earth doesn’t need saving — it’s done pretty damn well surviving cataclysms far beyond what man can do for eons! Neither is life the fragile eggshell the greens and academics tout it is; if life can flourish after a asteroid strike wipes out 75% of life on earth the biosphere can damn sure tolerate a few fossil fuel emissions! What really gets me is why isn’t the Mars and Venus probe solar flux/ planet temperature readings getting any play? Is NASA waltzing with the greens? Oh, forgot, NASA’s been doing that on the sly for a while — happily touting solar panels powering some probes but keeping mum about what powers probes like Galileo and Cassii (nukes, guys!). Is there no company or candidate who’d stand up to all this “Green PC”?

Whew; glad it was misspelled, I almost thought you had ventured to compare that hypocrite Gore to someone of substance. Here’s a thought–when they flew the planes into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, would you have rather had Gore in the White House?
From Businessandmedia.org:
Note the phrase “The second world war we knew was there.”
It was entirely appropriate for the cartoon to use the imagery, as it was used to convey a political message on war; employing the iconic image of a U.S. wartime victory to lampoon an unthinking move by the left (early troops withdrawal) that will surely lead to a U.S. defeat, is perfectly in bounds and keeping with the image’s meaning.
However, there is simply no equating the monumental image of Iwo Jima – one of our nation’s most expressive wartime visuals – to an agenda motivated event that is neither grounded in scientific fact (supported by indisputable, empirical evidence) nor in actual warfare. For Time to have misused this image is not only egregious, it is a disgraceful act of malice that trivializes the real wars we must fight!
Gore is more like Chicken Little, and the Chamberlain comparison would be ever so much more apropos when used with apologists/enablers for the rising illegal alien tide.
Dare I even make comparisons for Gore’s profiteering from his manufactured global warming to gangsters profiteering from protection rackets?
Do I smell a RICO act application here?
Of course we have climate change. Sunny one day, rainy the next.
