Time magazine’s idea of “respect”
Jeff Poor at the Business and Media Institute has an update on Time magazine’s eco-makeover of Iwo Jima imagery:
Despite outcry from veterans and supporters of the military over the cover of Time’s April 21 issue, a spokesman for the magazine insists editors did nothing wrong.
The Business & Media Institute (BMI) posted a story on April 17 about Iwo Jima veterans outraged by Time’s decision to alter the iconic image of Marines raising an American flag at Iwo Jima and replace the flag with a tree. The altered image was used to illustrate a new war on global warming.
“TIME has the utmost respect for our nation’s veterans and we well understand the power of the iconic image of the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima,” Daniel Kile, associate director of public relations at Time, said in an e-mail to BMI. “We believe this is a respectful use of this symbol of American valor and courage and serves to highlight another great challenge facing our nation.”
However, other Iwo Jima veterans that have stepped forward see it differently. Included below is some of the feedback the Business & Media Institute has received from hundreds of upset veterans in wake of the Time cover:
“As a veteran who was at Iwo Jima before, during and after the invasion, I think anything about the World War should be off-limits to any form of non military promotion or advertisement, especially by any of the present generation of spoiled people few of who appreciate the services and sacrifices of the relatively few of that generation.”
“I am a marine, 82 years old that landed on Iwo Jima Feb. 19, 1945. This crap you have on your magazine – you can put it where the sun does not shine.”“As a former Marine and survivor of Iwo Jima, I am canceling my subscription to Time magazine ungrateful bastards.”

I second the remarks of commenter Ken M.: “While we’re on the issue of saving a tree — hey Time Mag, how about a more determined effort to print fewer paper editions? eh?”

Utmost respect my arsch! Weren’t they behind the Haditha hoax with Murtha?
It appears Time is in complete and total denial of its insult to the USMC and rapidly dwindling supply of Iwo Jima survivors still among us. If they were smart they would be going into major CYA mode. Almost sounds like an Obamination non-apology.
Newsflash to Time magazine: Anthropomorphic global warming is not settled science. Stop treating it as such.
A rare commodity these days.
What a laugher! Now we have a “war on global warming”, purportedly man-made warming which I do not believe is even occuring.
And Time’s editors deem this sham such a real threat and such a noble cause that they take one of the most revered, somber and sacred images of history’s most savage, brutal and immense struggle for the freedom of mankind – and they pervert it into a “green” leftwing political message.
Shame! Shame! Shame! What a despicable pack of vermin our Press Corps has become. I wouldn’t walk across the street to spit on their shoes, much less buy the magazine or the pathetic defense put up by Daniel Kile. I wonder what Marxist school of journalism he attended – Columbia?
“…the utmost respect for our nation’s veterans and we well understand the power of the iconic image …”
Yeah, right. They understand all too well — how to demonstrate DISrespect, the kind that rallys the nutroots, and inflames those of us old enough to have genuine respect and reverence.
While we’re on the issue of saving a tree — hey Time Mag, how about a more determined effort to print fewer paper editions? eh?
And this is how they show respect to our veterans? Pathetic. I don’t know why anyone is surprised though…how do you expect them to even have time to consider if that would be offensive to our nation’s heroes when they’re busy making sure they DON’T offend Muslims and lib interest groups? How about one of those Danish cartoons of Muhammad on your cover next week, TIME, or a caricature of Allah?
Those we lost at Iwo Jima are rolling in their graves right now.
Time magazine, who destroys trees for their useless “news” magazine which no one purchases. How about removing their carbon footprint?
I lived in Arlington from May 2001 until June 2004. I watched the fireworks from the Marine Corps Memorial in 2002 because Fort Meyers was closed to the public that year. I drove past the Memorial twice a day and was always touched by reverence. The cover of Time did bother me … but so did the cartoon depicting members of the Democratic Party suggesting surrender. Where was the outrage with that? If you look to that Memorial as sacred, as I do, one must also reject that cartoon.
Well as usual the left does something, does not care if anyone else is offended.
Nothing they do could ever be considered wrong, and to question their judgment is of course wrong. Anyone who does not agree must be a flat earther. Just ask Al Gore, a group of liberals have looked at this and the discussion is over. They reached a consensus to that effect.
Oddly though I ran it past a group of my friends and we reached the consensus that it was poorly executed. And to think otherwise puts the liberals who disagree outside of the consensus. They are simply the flat earthers.
See it works both ways. State your position and do not blink.
It works in many areas, try it.
#10 so what would you call it other than surrender? A year ago Harry Reid (traitor-Nev.) said the war was lost. Pelosi has been singing the same tune. It seems your patriotic Demmie leaders have themselves surrendered to the Codepink/DU/Kossacks/Mporon.org wing of the party. Marxists Hillary and Dinglebarry Hussein want out of Iraq. Hillary told Petraeus to his face that he was a liar. His Holiness Boy Prince Obambi says his judgement as POTUS would not be swayed by military’s insights on the ground there. For you and them, take heed of what the dude in Raging Bull said, along with the horses you rode in on and the cavalry (howling moonbats) behind you. Now get out of your basement and go crying to your Mommy. Even a few pertinent questions by the like of Gibson and Stephanopoulis have you guys staining your pants and crying unfair.
And we are supposed to believe they support the troops.
Time and time again we are shown that liberals neither support or respect what our military has done for our country. The fact that Time can’t understand why the vets are upset speaks volumnes for the stupidity of Time.
off topic but speaking of respect…
Happy Passover to our Jewish friends.
I agree with #12, I think that political cartoons are in a different realm altogether.
And the liberal newspapers and magazines still wonder why they keep ending up in the red. You can’t consistently insult the American people and expect them to shell out real greenbacks for your product. All of the anti-Iraq War movies have proved that. And then you get these idiots saying that it must just be all Iraq war movies, and ignore the fact that all of the movies that have bombed have the same point of view.
I have an idea for a movie that, if given legs, would do wonderfully. Its called Anbar, and Michael Totten adds a few more pages to the script with every one of his incredible updates about about the progress there. How’s this for a story, “Fallujah, once described as the most dangerous city in the world, now has gone months without seeing a single American soldier killed.” Or this “Ramadi, once described as the most dangerous city in the world…” You get the point.
The fact is, in the MSM, man-made global warming is a fact, and they’ll do everything they can to show the average American that there isn’t a single person questioning it, and if they are, they must be equivalent to Nazis, a comparison that the Goracle himself has made.
I’d cancel my subscription too, if I’d ever had one.
WASTE OF TIME MAGAZINE

Actually, I am taking care of my Mom because of Alzheimer’s. So your statement isn’t to far off.
TIME is only interested in dazzling us with its juvenile photographic game playing in making the cover. For all their weasel explanations, they have no real idea of the insult they’ve made. Selling some mags is their only concern.
All they (Time) are doing is giving veterans of World War II the middle finger.
I wonder what their reaction would be if they had a picture of MLK and a voice balloon with the words “…white children and black children shall play together…” and have it accompanied by a sub-photo of a male white guy wipping a female black woman S& M style?
I’ll bet they’d be screaming bloody murder over that one.
The MSM are such hypocrites.
If you ever need to renew your respect for “the greatest generation,” try a visit to the Mighty Eighth Air Force museum down in Savannah, GA. Just got back from there today. After 2 tours in Iraq, the things I did still pale in comparison with the daily lives of these men and they have my utmost respect. This place is a must-see.
I had to fix that for him.
I am worried about the effects of a truly awful form of pollution affecting the world every day.
And with every passing day it gets worse and worse.
Some days it seems unstoppable. We may be nearing a tipping point, but if we take immediate actin we can avert this crisis.
The pollution of which I speak is the “MENTAL POLLUTION” of the left.
However, there is hope. And it is
found in the truth, much of which can be found here.
There is a growing outcry, and if we listen carefully it can be heard. The proof is in the response from the left.
Their response is never, definitive proof and an openness to help you understand facts.
No as with all tyrants, their response to real questions is anger and threats. While these tactics do work in the short run, the past 30 years is an example, in the long run, the period I submit we are now entering, the truth will always win.
And so, their lose is more evident every day. But now is not the time to imagine victory, now is the time to press harder as we now must turn back the 30 years of mental pollution their religion of liberalism has wrought.
Real Americans love a fight.
I heard that somewhere before.
TIME is absolute basuda. Shockingly biased and dumbed down; I bet Cookie Monster will be Man of the Year this time round.
GLOBAL WARMING STOPPED IN 1998 AND SINCE 2004 THERE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN GLOBAL COOLING.
THAT’S WHY THE NAME HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM GLOBAL WARMING TO CLIMATE CHANGE.
#18 then I guess you have more empathy for your mom than BooHoo Obama has for his granny or mom…he couldn’t even bother to visit mom on her death bed, but has highest regard for his abandoning daddy dearest and HIS Marxist philosophy. Like Gene Hackman says maybe Hussein is the real thing. Yeah, a real snake in the grass, hate America firster tax and spend lib who has managed to feather his own nest quite well.
Has BooHoo Obama been on cover of Sports Illustrated or Smithsonian mag rag yet? I cancelled that when everything was black power oriented.
Time Magazine must have the same
creativethinkers as Absolut VodkaSemper Fi’
Uncommon valor was a common virtue
To the Jackasses at Time: How many respectful losses have been taken due to Gorebal Warming?
Do you consider the valor it took to take Mt. Suribachi with the “valor” it takes to change from incandescent to fluorescent? or is it courageous to change bulbs?
Until you nitwits realize the difference, you are woefully clueless on what it took to make this nation great.
As for using revered symbols, what if the photo of Kent State were used to promote the accuracy of National Guard riflemen?
remember their respect for global freezing? Who gives a dm what time thinks or says?
This is a copy of my comment on BlackFive…
Every Marine knows who he is and what his corps is all about. The absolute integrity of the Marine Corps precipitates any reaction other than shock.
I don’t have words to describe my disgust, but I do have my fellow Marines and I have a deep knowledge of who we are and what our mission is.
I choose to rise above the vitriol that I could easily spew and just say that this is despicable, and if there is an organization that can carry the weight of the moronic idiots who choose to dishonor the men who faught for a noble cause then it is certainly the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS.
Have said that, I would also like to point out the Time Magazine can suck my green dick.
Dittos #15. Thanks for elucidating that so clearly Jimmy.
…and the things you have done Armored Cav pale in comparison to what many other common Americans will have done, and take for granted. Thank you for your service.
the only way I can accept the cover like that is if Al Gore was at the bottom of the hole where they are planting the tree..
As I recall, raising the flag over Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima was done after the victory. (Maybe shortly before?) Does this mean that the “war on man-made global warming” has been won? Can we move on to more important wars now?
Like …
The new war (Revised edition from the 1970’s version) on global cooling now known as climate change?
Inciting racism and creating sub-cultures of Americans rather than creating a diverse American culture?
Legalizing sedition and traitorous acts of war protesters and other lib-loons?
Creating larger government entitlement teats for the people to become addicted to and dependent on?
Dividing the American people according to class, creed, socio-political and any other barrier we can use to break them apart and prevent them from Uniting?
Legalizing the invasion of our nation by literally tens of millions of illegal-alien invaders and then patting them on the back and rewarding them for a job well done?
Figuring out how to pay for all of Hillary’s socialist plans that Americans can not afford?
How can there be a war on global warming when there are so many scientists who don’t agree with it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientists_opposing_the_mainstream_scientific_assessment_of_global_warming
I’m sure there are more but there have been a few that stated that they’re afraid to show their studies because it doesn’t go with the mainstream. And liberals say that conservatives are against science.
I remember I had one outspokened Geology professor who got onto a rant about global warming shortly after the tsunami happened and people were all, “It’s a sign!” And he said quite simply, “Hurricanes, tsunamis, climate change, all that have been happening ever since the earth was created and it will continue to change as long as the earth still exists!”
Furthermore, I read this article recently in a German newspaper (tis where I live right now) that said that there was evidence that the earth is getting warmer because there isn’t so much crap in the atmosphere anymore to protect the earth from harmful rays from the sun. I can see the point. Our enviroment is actually cleaner than it was lets say over a century ago. When the world was run on the dirty substance known as coal and it was so bad it would stain trees and buildings. You can still see the coal pollution from then in a lot of Europe still. The earth was also colder. I wonder why.
There was a Time I used this vaulted publication as a fire starter, now I find toilet paper far superior!
OT….struggling! What is the trick posting on this site, I have disabled popups etc. suspect the ads doubleclick crap is the problem
Wartip, the raising of the flag occurred on Day 4 of the invasion, showing the conquest of Mt. Suribashi. It was a big morale booster and stopped the shelling of U.S. troops from the rear as they pushed north. Unfortunately, the campaign had just started. It would take another 2 weeks to secure the island. I think 3 of the flag-raisers died on the island.
Can you imagine the reaction of these leftists if one of us painted a moustache on their portrait in dung? How about thinking up your own original idea instead of manipulating classic images? Images that these eco nuts or eco youth whatever would never be able to make materialize. I watched a 2 hr show called How the Earth was Made, history channel a very good show well worth the time. I now have an even greater respect for the unimaginable power of our planet. There was a part where they discussed co2 levels temporarily rising everything else that went on took millions upon millions of years but not that, wonder why not.
I think thats what bugs me so much about this cover. 3 of those guys did die in the subsequent battle. Why did they have to use those mens’ image?
Also during this battle, 27 Medals of Honor were awarded. This fact spurred the comment (from Adm. Halsey I think) that uncommon valour was a common virtue.
So, I’ve been wondering what the Gorebots will call uncommon valour.
Would it be that woman in Britian who aborted her child and was sterilized to save the Planet from the carbon footprint of that child? What kind of medal does she win?
Frankly folks, I wouldn’t even use this cover as toilet paper. It doesn’t even deserve the honor.
GOD Bless you. I’ve been there too.
35, 39, and well, everyone
J. Bradley’s “Flags of our Fathers” should be REQUIRED READING for senior year high schoolers in this country. he documents not just the [in some cases tragic] lives of the 6 flag-raisers [yes, some of whom did not make it off the island alive as the battle went on for weeks after the flag was raised] but a truly excellent summary of that pivotal battle, the training of the Marines, the preparation & planning, etc. etc.
JohnnyD, I own one book by a CMH winner, “The Quiet Hero”, autographied by him (George Wahlen). I also have an autographed copy of Richard Overton’s book, “God Isn’t Here”. Both excellent reading on the battle and I would encourage people to read them. The latter book gets into the reality of combat; some of it pretty graphic. I treasure both books and am offended by that Time cover. My dad served in the Pacific. I’m sure he would have had something to say too.
Thanks, I’ll look for them and read them.
I couldn’t agree more. But alas, the state of education in this country wouldn’t permit it.
Talk about a made up war!!
Hard to believe most of the wackos that firmly believe in Global Warming can’t comprehend the War on Terror.
The people at Time are so out of touch with reality and what the majority of Americans really think. That they believe that they are honoring the deeds performed by the marines on Iwo Jima is unfortunately understandable. In short, they just don’t get it and never will. Not in our lifetime.
reverenddon, God Bless and best to you and your mother.
I recall something my honors history teacher said to us once, ‘LIFE is for people who cannot read. TIME is for those who can read, but not think.’
Time Magazine has fallen victim to one of the Classic Blunders, the most famous of which is getting involved in a land war in Asia, another of which is going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
They should have, of course, waited a couple of years for the rest of the Iwo Jima vets to die before ripping off their imagery. Probably they thought they all had, already, so they were safe.
This sort of thing is going to get worse, a lot worse, when we no longer have these valiant veterans to stand in the way of “progress”.
Just how bad is Time Magazine circulation numbers? They have been bottom feeding for awhile now, what are they trolling for, what demographic are they targeting “Hillary Clinton’s demographic” the working poor are busy working, they don’t have time to spit on the people providing them protection and security.
For one who used to subscribe to all those newsweeklies, and newpapers, I don’t have any one of them come anymore. I much prefer the internet for my news, where I can get left and right opinions of the issues. Of course, this site is high up on the list. I don’t even watch the morning/nightly news either…too full of commericals/infomercials promoting some book/film, sensationism, and left slanted marxist news. I doubt you get 5 minutes of anything useful in 60 minutes of show…oh, yes…the weather, and Michelle if she is on.
My Grandfather had over 23,000 historical books in his house and while I managed to make a dent in them before he died, I never did get through all of them. Thanks for the history update, most of the WWII section was consumed before my tenth birthday with the exception of reading up about my Grampa and some of his compatriots in the European theater. His brother served in the Pacific theater but I am afraid most of my 30+ year old Pacific theater recollection (being 43 now) is of Ernie Pyle.
Go GI Joe!
Time? It is about time we make our stand and quit tolerating this blasphemy.
“Time magazine ungrateful bastards”…
My sentiments, exactly!!!
I’m so sorry that those valiant Iwo Jima Marines had to live long enough to witness the never ending disrespect from the media for the military. It never ceases!
Those disgusting pukes at Time will never ever understand the horror these Marines endured protecting the rights these useful idiot journalists now abuse with impunity. The saddest thing is that, in their arrogance, these elite fools also do not respect the sacrifice.
Well over 6 thousand men died on that God forsaken rock of an island! To put up that image and THEN make a comparison to global warming is cheap, vile, low. Save some trees, dump that glossy rag!
I thought that judging by their standings, that was exactly what they were already making a valiant effort to attain … along with the vast majority of the dead tree media?
What do Time Magazine and “Jihad” Jimmy Carter have in common? They both insult the memory of brave Marines that have died for our nation. Time Magazine with this Blasphemous cover and Jihad Jimmy’s
meetingpandering to the leader of Hamas on the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut. The utter contempt by both Time and Jihad Jimmy leave a foul stench in the air of freedom!
The folks at Time have shown they “respect” truth – and their readers – exactly the same way they respect veterans.
If that doesn’t kill their circulation, nothing will.
I dont see the relevance of news weeklies. By the time they hit the news stands they are out dated. Why bother when I can get my fix from MM and HA?
Amen True but I have hopes that soon God will sort them out.
Just sayin’
The original post on this was so disrespectful, I could not even respond. And sweet JESUS, now we have the FAUX APOLOGY required by all of MSM when they F–K up!!! GOOD GRIEF!!!
Heads up. Someone has made keeping Wikipedia’s global warming pure a full time job: http://exurbannation.blogspot.com/2008/04/get-it-while-its-wiki.html
Time for a grain of salt.
Sure could use another Ernie Pyle today. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t make it past rookie reporter/copy boy on most newspapers and news shows. Patriotism and being with the GIs (not the green zone) is frowned on. Well, there’s Michael Yon, thank goodness.
TIME, how about a reprint of you global freezing issue? You know the one that show NYC buried under ice? O O O! you could show before, during and after pictures!

Anyone know how the subscriber ship of Time, Newsweek and other commie rags are doing? As well as the city parers across the country I would imagine.
allrsn, they’re saving the reprint for a few more years, when we’ll be back “fighting” global cooling again. Since the 30s (that I know) we’ve cycled from warming to cooling and back. Won’t be long before we’ll cycle back again.
I hope all who have never been in combat take no insult from what I am about to say, I don’t mean it that way all. I just hope this episode defines , in some way, why we who have fought, at times, will say that “someone doesn’t understand what sets us off” , or “you don’t what you’re talking about”. It ’s that we harbor memories and lock them away then this triggers the anger. I know I’m not explaining this the best way I could. This really is a travesty far more than the cartoon showing the surrender of the Dems. I must admit, though, that one, as well, bugged me. Sorry, I’ll shut up for now.
” at all”
I would call that “well said“
To Mike Strank, Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, Ira Hayes, and Rene Gagnon, we salute you and hold you plus all those who served on Iwo, in high esteem.
Your almost there, the reason it was changed by the envirowackos is that all of the opposing views on global warming have made the statement that they don’t disspute the fact that there is “climate change” but they don’t believe in the global warming furvor. This is typical liberal theft of phrases that conservitives use.
Disrespect and disdain for those that have fought and died for our freedoms.
Disrespect and disdain for our country.
Disrespect and disdain for the American people.
Is this a suprise?
I advise all advertisers in Time magazine to vet their circulation numbers more closely. Force them to accept an independent audit to tabulate what percentage of their reported subscriptions are actually PAID subscriptions. I’ve been received Time for free for the last 5 years and never paid them a nickel…
Billy,
Our lovely host frowns on using all caps. She does not like to be shouted at
Can’t remember the last time I read Time. Guess it’s going to be a long long time before I ever do again.
