An interesting endorsement for Obama

By see-dubya  •  April 20, 2008 06:58 AM

I noticed yesterday that David Boren, former Democratic Senator from Oklahoma and current President of OU, had joined Sam Nunn in endorsing Obama. I thought that was odd, because Boren was known as a fairly conservative Democrat, one who probably had much more in common with Hillary than Obama but is well right of them both.

I mean, this is a guy with actual executive experience running a university (pretty well, from what I hear) and foreign policy experience on the Senate Intelligence Committee, a guy from a heartland state, a guy who’s everything Obama isn’t…why would he endorse Obama if he’s…so…different…

Right about there a little bell started going off.

This endorsement was a smart play by Boren, who would be a great ticket-balancer for Obama. Not only does he offset almost all of Obama’s weaknesses, he could make inroads into a few very red states. I don’t think Obama wants Hillary on the ticket and anywhere close to in power around him (would you?), and Edwards doesn’t really like the Obamessiah very much.

This Kos diarist doesn’t like Boren, and Matthew Yglesias calls him “horrible” on domestic issues. I’ve also no doubt at all that these liberals would fall in line and vote for Judas Iscariot for VP, as long as Obama’s name is at the top of the ticket. Whether Barry O will swallow his ideology and bring him on board…that’s another interesting question.

Idle speculation? Absolutely. But that’s what blogs are for, right?

Maybe. But his heart isn’t in the right place. His mind isn’t either.

Obama would have a hard time convincing the convention in selecting a conservative democrat, regardless of state. The party has gone so far to the left, even a moderate would be looked on with suspicion. His best bet would be a conservative from a high electoral state, to help him, but I don’t see one coming on. An Obama/Clinton ticket would be a disaster, worse than McGovern. That’s why I would like to see that alliance.

Also, Boren is Jewish, and Obama might hope he would offset a potential switch to McCain among some Jewish voters. Significant Jewish unease with Obama has been reported for the last few months. Or if not VP, some cabinet position, but the endorsement itself of a non-radical Jewish politician, as well as a supposedly pro-defense Southern politician are both meant, likely, to offset Obama’s vulnerabilities. Nunn has always wanted to be Sec. of Defense.

I hope Obama’s ego prevents him from making a solid strategic VP choice.

Having Hillary as your VP isn’t much different than being told you had a rare exotic disease and probably less than six months to live.

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s an unfair take on Clinton. I just can’t shake the feeling that if she is the VP, something unfortunate and tragic would happen to the President.

Despite the saying, you really shouldn’t keep certain enemies closer.

Also, I don’t think Obama would have any problems with Boren’s ideology. In 2000, Lieberman went on the same ticket with Gore, and tossed any portions of his ‘conservative’ ideology that were in conflict with Gore’s objectives. So would Boren. (it’s just a coincidence they were both Jewish — their behavior is reflective of what any opportunistic poliician would do)

Boren might have been conservative but if he has aligned himself with Obama, he isn’t now. What this really shows is that most politicians have no real value systems and will morph into anything that suits their narcissistic personalities and political agendas.

See-Dubya, is right when he says while the left will groan if the VP is not equally liberal to Obama, it does not matter.

They could not care less. Once they have their favorite leftist of the moment firmly in place at the top of the ticket, the VP is absolutely powerless.

Unlike President Bush, who allowed and encouraged the VP to be a real participant in the past ~8 years. The tyranical leftist cannot share power.

Look to the senate for what we could expect from an Obama presidency. An Obama presidency would resemble the Pelosi era in the senate. Without the facelift.

So whoever Mullah Obama selects to fill the slot, they should prepare themselves for quite a bit of time alone. Pining away, hoping for a tie vote to break in the Senate. Because that might be the only time they actually get to do something.

Bayh would be a viable candidate for VP, but he’s endorsing HRC. Doesn’t mean he wouldn’t turn on her in a dime if BHO offered him the spot on the ticket. As much as the thought of Hillary in the Oval Office makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, I’d much rather see her there than Obama. I really think we’re in deep you-know-what if that man (for lack of a better word) ends up in office. I’m still scratching my head as to why the Republicans didn’t search long and hard for a great candidate this time around— McCain will fair well in the general election, but uf we had someone more conservative with more charisma to put up, it would be a lanslide win. Obama has his die-hard flock of sheep (and it’s huge), but his weaknesses are only just beginning to show. Every time the man opens his mouth, his foot goes in a little deeper… won’t be long before he chokes on it.

I still, to this day, associate David Boren with being one of the first to endorse Jimmy Carter back in ’76. That’s certainly not an endorsement of his judgement. Boren’s past includes some rumor baggage that I think Obama might prefer to avoid, given his problems with middle America.

The more I observe from this much too long run for POTUS is that “we the people” no longer make the choice of, which lying crapweasel we will be stuck with as a party nominee. All I see is how viable candidates are pressured to bow out so the anointed one can stand up and claim the thrown for party unity (or is it for the children). They can then quit spending obscene amounts of money on their primary campaigns and start to build their war chest for the main event. Let’s ask the “Stupid Party” how their fund raising is going so far. I have to agree with other commenters if Boren’s endorsement is a payoff as his selection as the Obamination’s running mate he has basically sold his soul to the loony left wing of the party and will march in lockstep spouting the party line.

Hey, what do I know? Larry Craig was a huge shock to me…but Boren’s managed to keep active in Oklahoma politics for years and OK’s not exactly Fire Island.

Well Obama does need someone conservative to balance his ticket and defeat McCain. If Obama does pick someone conservative and pro-gun, pro-middle America it will be a good thing…

Because John “If you are conservative, I’m ignoring you” McCain will then have to pander to anti-illegal immigration conservatives and others with whom he has been at odds with for years…imagine the “maaaverick” having to actually pay attention to the conservative base and its needs.

Good point. The rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Still……

As for Boren being Jewish, I doubt it. I have seen him described as a Methodist, and his daughter is an Episcopal Minister, which makes her a Christian. Sort of.

It might be that there is no evil intention or political scheming behind Boren endorsing Obama. Obama is not (despite a survey to the contrary) the most liberal member of the senate. His health care proposal is more conservative than Clinton’s (Obama has fewer mandates, covers fewer people, etc.).

I wasn’t making any claims beyond the fact that the rumors exist and would be something the campaign would have to deal with should Boren be picked to run as VP.
