So awesome! It brings tears to the eyes. As I listened I thought, “This is what it should be like. Freedom. Freedom to be able to sing a moving religious and patriotic song for the Pope on government property without fear of reprisals.” It’s sad that there are some who cannot feel the thrill of patriotism and love of God while listening to this marvelous performance.

I find it interesting. Most of the people I’ve come across (friends, blogs, etc) who support the work the troops are doing in Iraq tend to come from Christian backgrounds. They may not be Christians themselves, but they are not offended by it and are not diametrically opposed to its values.

I saw this live right before I was ready to walk out the door to go to work the other day. I sat mesmerized with tears running down my face. I think what brought the tears was such a strong feeling that we’re slowly losing our country, and so many of our young people don’t know this music–our history. I don’t know what school music programs are teaching kids to play these days, but I was in band and chorus from 5th grade until I graduated from high school and I am so glad I learned these pieces.

I’m going to see the Marine Corps Band this week at one of San Diego County’s premier venues where the sound is magnificent. This is the 4th year in a row that I’ve attended and it’s never short of spectacular. The music with an accompanying slideshow of America during one portion of the show just chokes you with emotion. What really strikes you, though, is the audience (mostly “older” folks even tho I’m only 51,lol!–most are in their 60’s, 70’s, & 80’s which is such a joy to see) at these performances because you are reminded, clearly, that “this” is who America is, not the illegals who march in our streets carrying signs that say, “WE are America.”

To these arrogant trespassers I say, “You have no clue about my America; you only want what it can give you. Attend one of these events, learn about our history and then you’ll see that “you” are clearly NOT “America.”

Maybe you should get your history straight before inserting your foot into your mouth.

From wikipedia (and I hate wikipedia):

The tune was written around 1855 by William Steffe.

“The Battle Hymn of the Republic” is an American patriotic anthem written by Julia Ward Howe in November 1861 and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862 that was made popular during the American Civil War.

The lyrics of the Battle Hymn of the Republic appear in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sermons and speeches, most notably in his speech “How Long, Not Long” from the steps of the Montgomery, Alabama Courthouse on March 25th, 1965 after the 3rd Selma March, and in his final sermon delivered in Memphis, Tennessee on the evening of April 3rd, 1968, the night before his assassination. In fact, the latter sermon, King’s last public words, ends with the first lyrics of the Battle Hymn, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

    * The Battle Hymn was played at the funerals of Robert F. Kennedy, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald R. Ford. It was also played at a Westminster Abbey memorial service for President John F. Kennedy and at a more recent memorial service for expatriate British television personality Alistair Cooke.
    * The Battle Hymn was played at the conclusion of the National Service of Prayer and Remembrance on Friday, September 14, 2001.

The Battle Hymn has always been one of the most inspirational works of music I’ve ever heard. I was lucky enough back in 1978 to tour Europe with “America’s Youth in Concert,” which was a band and choir of about 200 each.

Although the band and choir did their performances separately, at the end of each concert we did a combined rendition of the Battle Hymn that remains for me its defining version; I always had difficulty concentrating on playing the musical accompaniment, especially toward the end, because the choir did such a powerful rendition of “…As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free” that I choked up every time.

The high point came when we played at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and the audience loved the Battle Hymn so much they asked us to play it again. And I bawled my eyes out like a baby both times.
