I was lucky enough back in 1978 to tour Europe with "America's Youth in Concert," which was a band and choir of about 200 each. Although the band and choir did their performances separately, at the end of each concert we did a combined rendition of the Battle Hymn that remains for me its defining version; I always had difficulty concentrating on playing the musical accompaniment, especially toward the end, because the choir did such a powerful rendition of <em>"...As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free"</em> that I choked up every time. The high point came when we played at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and the audience loved the Battle Hymn so much they asked us to play it again. And I bawled my eyes out like a baby both times.
