derel3433:
Hat to burst your south of the Mason-Dixon Line bubble, but The Battle Hymn was written by a SOUTHERNER. He was from <em>South Carolina</em>.

This US Army Chorus version is average at best. For the very best of all the best renditions ever it’s the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’. They make everyone else sounds like novice singers. Their rendition here.</blockquote>

The Battle Hymn has always been one of the most inspirational works of music I've ever heard. I was lucky enough back in 1978 to tour Europe with "America's Youth in Concert," which was a band and choir of about 200 each.

Although the band and choir did their performances separately, at the end of each concert we did a combined rendition of the Battle Hymn that remains for me its defining version; I always had difficulty concentrating on playing the musical accompaniment, especially toward the end, because the choir did such a powerful rendition of <em>"...As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free"</em> that I choked up every time.

The high point came when we played at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and the audience loved the Battle Hymn so much they asked us to play it again. And I bawled my eyes out like a baby both times.

Kudos for the courage it takes someone to comment on a blog? Please. Kudos to those singing above. They have the real courage. It doesn't take much bravery to comment on a blog, I'm afraid.

Hey Wade #53! Derel3433 is right on! This song glorifies the Federal, un-Constitutional tyranny that began with Lincoln and has grown since then to become the behemoth machine of oppression that it is today.

The blatant unrestrained grab of power of our illegal Federal government has been going on for so long, states and the citizens thereof have long ago forfeited the rights granted them by the Constitution of the United States of America and by their Creator.

The USA has become the great perpetrator of injustice, immorality, and perversion in our world. Kudos to Derel for having the courage to say so!

Dankine and Duff65:
Uh, why can't y'all just be glad that they're actually singing that song on government property? Things have gotten so bad with the "separation of church and state" I'm surprised that songs like this are still allowed to be sung. Personally, I had tears in my eyes. No matter its problems, I still love America. Glory, glory, hallelujah indeed. Y'all two just need to get a grip.

So often you do not hear the "In the beauty of the lilies" verse, because it is the one that is overtly Christian. But to my mind it is the most powerful part of the whole piece, and is the only fitting ending.

Wonderfully done. I am glad they had the guts to sing this verse on the lawn of the White House.
