I mentioned the massive, $300 million Gore-bastic global warming hype ad campaign a few weeks ago. I thought the Robertson/Sharpton pairing was going to be bad, but it’s nothing compared to these two stiffs on a couch peddling eco-alarmism. There was a time when Newt Gingrich and the Beltway GOP establishment could be counted on to defend free market environmentalism, property rights, and rational cost-benefit analyses. No more:

Newt realizes he’s gonna take it on the chin from the right wingers for this add. I don’t see any evidence that he’s doing it for any financial gain.
Maybe Newt really, honestly believes that our environment is in deep trouble if we don’t change the way we do things.
Is it really fair to question his long history of strong conservative credentials just because of this campaign? Do you want leaders to stand up for what they believe in, or do you want androids that listen the Hannity, Rush and Beck, read MM, and tailor all of their opinions to suit the ultra-right base.
I’ve never liked Newt, and rarely agreed with him, but I’ve almost always respected him.(except for the way he did his ex-wife, but that’s another story)

It was a “WTF?” moment when I saw this ad on tv last night.
Newt disappoints me.

Newt has some great ideas on the subject. Please hear him out and then decide. You know regulations and changes are coming. It’s just how we want them to come about. An example: Should we give incentives to companies that come up with alternative fuels or tax the hell out of them until they move to another county or shut down all together?

Newt thinks we need to be part of the debate so he validates this chicken little syndrome fueled by the same junk science thats already admitted that no matter what we do the result won’t change?

Recently there has been an ad on the left sidebar at Townhall of Al Gore and his climate change crap. I wondered why they were running that.
And I just noticed another climate change ad is running on the right sidebar. Are Conservatives starting to buy this crap? The temps have been cooling for the past few years again. Climate change has nada to do with what humans do… It’s a cycle the earth goes through. Why… WHY are conservatives buying into this???
That is the policy of big gooberment is it not, find something to tax? So, now we will be taxed on the air we breathe (okay, carbon usage). It took a long time to come up with an idea to do just the - tax the air. Remember when the “air waves” belonged to the public? This is where Newt lost us. Not that we are “ultra-right base”.
Mark my words, we will be taxed for sun usage some day (as soon as the politico’s figure out what to call it).
What taxes are you talking about???? Companies have to earn a profit in order to be taxed. The “alternative fuels” companies haven’t even come close yet. And by the time they do, they’ll have enough tax-loss-carryforwards to last them for years.
The effect on our economy if the global warming chicken-littles get their way will be disastrous. Watching Republicans give in on this rather than fighting, at a time when the evidence is mounting that this is nothing but hysteria, is very depressing.

Newt is just the tip of the iceberg, Republicans in general are adopting the global warming agenda. Our current president, and all our presidential candidates have bought into the Global Warming hoax, and are executing it’s agenda predictably.
You’ll also notice that most “conservative” commentators have started banging the Global Warming drum. The memo must have gone out. Global Warming is a perfect bogeyman for the ruling class, and the Republicans have adopted it accordingly. Now all we have to do to protect ourselves from terrorists and climate change is give up all our rights and guns, and pay the government for the privilege of breathing and driving.

The debate these days is about whether or not there’s climate change actually happening, and what’s causing it. So, speaking as a true politician, he didn’t actually say that there was climate change due to the usual suspects - rather, we should address climate change.

Government has invented many more ingenious ways to vacuum money out of the pockets of the citizenry than merely “income” taxes. Do you think if the oil companies and/or cigarette manufacturers were losing money, the government would rescind or even temporarily suspend their hefty share of the price of a gallon/pack? Hardly.
The taxes on “green” companies would simply be another component of the “price” to the public, regardless of the profitability of the product/service. Since using the products/services would then be mandated by law, like having a required percent of ethanol in gasoline by year 20XX, the public would not even have the option of making their own spending choices. Suspension of the practice of capitalism has long been an underlying goal of the ecofreaks anyway.
The tax component of the price of these two products (and there are many others, like alcohol) is already so large that the “profit” per unit to government is many multiples higher than that earned by the manufacturers themselves.
And the government does absolutely nothing to “earn” their take, except to shovel the money into the bottomless pit in Washington. In fact, in the case of the oil companies in particular, it does everything it possibly can to make it more difficult for them to invest in future profit-making opportunities, like Anwar and off-shore drilling, or exploring the vast reserves under the western United States, or even building more refineries.
I think this is a sign of the Apocolypse. The End is truly near.

When you have Bob Barr snd Mike Gravel of Alaska joining the Libertarians- individuals with serious political experience-and the Republicans all but caving in the Left on Illegal Immigration and global warming, it is time to take stock and see if it is worth it for us conservatives to continue supporting a party that loves our vote and then tries to screw us with it once they are in office.

My 2 cents on this matter.
I’m hardly a scientist, but I’m certainly not as certain as the consensus seems to be around here that human conduct can’t bring about change in the environment. Around these parts, the downtown area is usually 10 or so degrees warmer than the areas surrounding the city. Why? It seems to me that it has something to with the densities of the building in the downtown area. Isn’t it possible that “global warming” or “climate change” just a larger-scale version of this heat-island effect, i.e., human conduct effecting “natural” temperatures?
Also, it seems to me that the desire to develop alternative fuels and tax incentives for such development is an idea which should cut across party lines and politics.
For the rest of my life, I will look back to this example to demonstrate for younger people the difference between:

How is this “coming together” when Pelosi doesn’t move an inch? The only people moving are the “conservatives”, who are moving drastically to the left!. We will never see Liberals move to the right to solve a BS problem. That is it for me with Newt Gingrich. He has good ideas, but this is the last straw. It is like Rush says…why do we except these Liberal premises? Especially when the jury is still out on man-made Global Warming. What a crock. I lost all respect for Newt here.
A stark reminder that, first and foremost, Newt is a politician. And like all politicians, they have an irresistable, almost Pavlovian, response to the almighty dollar or to opportunities that reverse their growing irrelevancy. I believe I even saw his mouth watering while sitting next to Pelosi.
Yep, when I saw this ad with Pelosi and Gingrich, I was pretty nauseous. I guess Newt really misses the limelight and if Pelosi puts on one more coating of makeup she’ll look positively inert (okay that’s her most of the time).
Newt also misunderstands even underestimates the intelligence of everyday conservatives. For him to cozy up to Pelosi because he thinks that no other conservative will is just a joke. The thing that Newt is missing is that he’s accommodating this insane movement through engagement. It’s like Carter talking with Hamas- what’s the ultimate outcome of such a pairing?
Newt really missed the mark on this one. For him to think that Conservatives aren’t aware of the environment and ways to conserve really implies why his tenure as House Speaker didn’t last all that long.
Where, where, WHERE are the statesmen our country so desperately needs today? Sigh. I guess I’ll have to content myself with watching old C-Span footage of the Gipper and savor the glory days.

That wouldn’t be so bad as long as our position was there is no such thing as man made global warming. It seems to me we are simply crossing the aisle one more time while the democrats stand their ground.

Newt is being exposed for the Rockefeller Republican he always has been and his CFR agenda is on full display.He is promoting the same elitist agenda on the man made Global Warming Hoax.
He has just repacked the name, “Green Conservatism” using the spin that we must be in the debate.
From his own website there is this:.

There is absolutely no evidence that “Fossil Fuels” are in any way raising the temperature of the earth yet he is claiming that we must make the transition to some magical alternative fuel that will benefit man kind. There is no alternative fuel on the horizon and probably will not be in the next 50 years.
When he was in Congress, he could have worked to stop Congress from capping oil wells letting the Government take over the oil industry in America. We have more oil in the USA than we could possibly use but our own Congress has placed it all off limits due to “environmental” concerns, which I think is just a cover for the Government taking over the oil industry. (They already make more money than the oil companies in taxing them)
The Energy Crisis has been created by our own Government and IMHO it is criminal that it is allowed to continue. Our economy is being destroyed as we speak.
The ethanol mandates that GWB recently signed into law are resulting in Global Food shortages and famine in some third world countries. Because of the Ethanol fuel mandates alone, Food prices have increased by 37% last year because the price of corn that is used to make ethanol has tripled in price.
If we allowed the North Slope of Alaska to be opened to Domestic production and not just ANWAR, we would see crude oil prices of $10-15 dollars a barrel. It is all supply and demand.
What kind of insanity allows this hoax to continue under the name of Global Warming or Environmentalism?
Good point. As you can see in Newt’s response that I posted, he states he doesn’t think it’s man made. I admit, I’m a huge Newt fan and I was worried when I first started seeing this issue growing on his site, but after reading much of what he’s thinking, it’s not as bad as people are trying to make it.

When I read Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn’s book, “Breach of Trust”, it was a real eye opener about Newt, Lott, and the GOP leadership in congress. Coburn was one of the “Class of 94″ Congressmen “eager to fullfill” Newt Gingrich’s, “Contract With America.” The title of the book says it all. I highly recommend reading his book if you can stand knowing what really goes on in the swamp. The founding fathers warned us over and over that bad things could still happen to the best laid plans, and they have.
I saw that on tv today. Boy, was I disappointed. Newt lost a lot of points with me today. Stick with historical novels, Newt. You’re much better at that, than global warming.

I believe Coburn has many shades like a chameleon. I believe he is leading a bill to outsource our M4’s (Our Troops Weapons) from where they have been made by Americans in Conneticut to a company in Germany.
If this turns out to be true, I wouldn’t read a newsletter from Coburn, let alone buy one of his books.
I’m 100% in favor of establishing sound, logic energy policy. I’m also in favor of establishing a sound, logical environmental policy.
However, I will not engage in these discussions as long as science and engineering are ignored.
Now, even if we assume that AGW is a fact, no alternative energy plans or conservation plans show any promise.
This country needs to make a strong push for nuclear power now. The AGW crowd and energy independence crowd should both love this idea.
The plan should be;
1. Design two types of plants. The first type should be large. The second type should be small and use fuel recycled from the first type.
2. Keep the two designs highly uniform. This will keep regulation cheaper and safer.
3. Assure the nuclear power industry that it will be allowed to continue recycling nuclear fuel. (In other words, assure against another Jimmy Carter type ban.)
4. Package up the spent recycled fuel into containers and dump them into a desert floor in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This will have no negative ecological impact at all.
I see your point and I was not happy that he sat there with San Fran Nan either. But I don’t think it’s worth throwing him under the bus for it.
This ad campaign is not only going to be with Newt and Nancy but other Conservatives with other Lefties.
My main issue this election cycle is stopping the illegal invaders. I compare Newt’s plan on that to Mcinsane’s plan for amnesty and this issue is not worth losing a solid plan to stop the invaders from coming.

I used to write to my Senator from Missouri begging her to read the true science of climate change, She wrote back and told me the facts were in and there was no sense in arguing about it. She plans to vote to save the farmers this summer with her outrageous global warming BS soon to be a hot topic in our Wonder senate. I’m sure our Wonder president, W, will sign off especially now that Newt is on board.

If the weapon is not up to snuff, it should be modified and fixed, not outsourced to another country. We’ve outsourced everything and it needs to stop.

“I hear ‘ya brother. I’m concerned on two fronts : A.) Nancy Pelosi - although you may need to work with her in the future - America does NOT - and her effectiveness & ratings are lower than well water - by you appearing with her - her ratings jumped 10 -15 points.
B.) Now everytime a Conservative tells Al, Nancy or the other tree huggers of a by-gone era that could care less about our Quality of American Life - to “Pound Salt” on Man Made Global Warming - they (The Enemy) are going to remind us that you sat on the couch with Nancy “in agreement”. Put RINO-Democrat McCain on the Couch.
Democrat-Socialist always screw Conservatives in the end. Now they have the Obama Bus as another weapon.

How can anyone who has watched Newt be shocked?
The time I saw him laughing uproariously at Sean Hannity, about 6 m onths before SHAMNESTY was pushed so hard last year - Fall of 2006 - Newt was siding completely with Alan Colmes, deriding Hannity for NOT BEING PRAGMATIC about the BORDER and ILLEGAL ALIENS and a PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP.
I’ve never seen Newt more RELAXED and CONTENTED than when he was laughing at Sean’s total frustration as Sean felt he was watching Newt’s political career finish flushing down the “plumbing fixtures”.
I was shockeed then - but it seems that was because *I focused too much on the Clinton’s during the Impeachment process and not enough on certain key GOP members like Newt and Fred Thompson, etc.
McCain was easy back then - he always stuck out like a sore thumb.
I think Newt is campaigning to McCain for VEEP!
After all, McCain is the NEW “MOST CONSERVATIVE”.

I think we got off topic from this thread. The point I was trying to make was that Coburn revealed a lot about the GOP leadership, including Newt. To my knowledge none of that was challenged by any of those he wrote about. I don’t think he is trying to outsource our arms manufacturing but is more concerned with the safety of the ones using those weapons in a life or death situation. It appears they have tried to get the manufacturer to improve reliability and ease of maintenance. He says he was approached by soldiers with complaints about it.
I would think the Army commissioned it because the article cited states: “Weapons officials at the Army Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., exposed Colt Defense LLC’s M4, along with the Heckler & Koch XM8, FNH USA’s Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle and the H&K 416 to sandstorm conditions from late September to late November, firing 6,000 rounds through each test weapon.”

It is off topic a little but, the more global warming regs pushed, the more jobs leave the USA. Hechler & Koch is the german firm I believe is the one that could get our M4 contract? I still say it is just as wrong as giving the air tanker deal to France, whose company has major, major backing and investment from Putin.

How was any of that accomplished in the ad? Other than being “on stage” … which I would argue is counterproductive to your message when the stage is shared with the likes of Pelosi.

There was no trial, there was no chance for rebuttal - only the accusation. It may have never happened at all and we’ll never know. John Bolton got borked; Jack Ryan got “borged”.
