ACLU should just drop the “A”
Seriously, why do they even bother with the “American” part of “American Civil Liberties Union” anymore? (Hat tip - Lonewacko)
From the ACLU-San Diego’s latest press release announcing its partnership with the Mexican government:
In a historic agreement to pursue joint strategies to protect the human rights of migrants moving across the Mexico-United States border, the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties and the Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos today signed a document declaring common goals and principles to address the serious human rights issues.
The Memorandum of Agreement between the two organizations charges the parties jointly to explore legal actions to challenge Operation Gatekeeper and other programs that have contributed to migrant deaths, and to educate a transnational audience about the issue of human rights tragedies at the border. More than $30 billion dollars have been spent on Gatekeeper since its inception, but the program has done little to prevent illegal entries—it has simply shifted them to the mountains and deserts east of San Diego, where migrants face much harsher conditions in remote, environmentally hostile areas.
The agreement was developed in reaction to the continually mounting death toll of now more than 5,000 migrants along the border, as well as the challenge of advocating on these issues effectively from just one side of the border. With respect to abuses by federal law enforcement agencies, for example, U.S. federal agencies have acted with immunity and a complete lack of transparency.
Kevin Keenan, Executive Director of the ACLU-San Diego and Dr. José Luis Soberanes, President of the Comisión, signed the agreement at the “Justice in Mexico: Evaluating National and Local Strategies” conference at the Joan Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, University of San Diego.
“Through this collaboration we hope to build bridges of understanding and justice, and tear down walls of prejudice and hate,” said Dr. Soberanes. “It is intolerable that our two civilized nations have allowed so many deaths of migrants along the border since the adoption of Operation Gatekeeper,” said Keenan. “By working together with Mexico’s Human Rights Commission, we will hold our governments to account in ways that we could not do alone.” David Shirk, Director of the Trans-Border Institute that hosted the conference, said, “We are pleased to serve as the backdrop for the signing of this historic agreement, and hope that this partnership will lead to a reversal of the tragic trends that have plagued our two nations in recent years.”
The agreement calls for the organizations to host an invitation-only conference of experts in June to focus on bi-national advocacy strategies for attacking inhumane policies affecting migrants, especially deaths from border crossings; to meet again following the U.S. elections in November to update its plans; to cooperate on other lawsuits, advocacy efforts, and educational campaigns on a case-by-case basis; and to seek funding for these efforts in their respective countries. The ACLU of San Diego is not receiving funding from any Mexican source for its work.

The whole point of Operation Gatekeeper is to keep illegal immigrants out. If they have to go through harsher terrain- that’s all a part of the plan. Harsher terrain = fewer attempts at entry into our country illegally.

This announcement of supporting the illegal invasion by looking after the civil rights of the very illegal invaders that damage our countries ecosytem and injure or kill our citizens should get them on the radar screen at DOJ for Treason and Sedition (not holding my breath on this one). Of course anyone with a brain knows the ACLU only looks out for the interest of those that would hurt this nation and all it stands for.
I know for a fact this treasonous den of jackals will not be going after the coyotes that abuse them on their invasion of our country. I believe it has something to do with professional courtesy. The ACLU frustrates me. Much of what they do is commendable, but they miss the mark on a lot of stuff. I really wish there was an alternative — a civil liberties advocacy group that valued 2nd Amendment and property rights and didn’t go around defending people against private sector discrimination or forming partnerships with other nations etc. Anyone know if that exists?

Operation Gatekeeper is “credited” with causing over 400 deaths. Some dumb Christians might consider that a drawback, as I do. I admire an organization, even the ACLU, that acts to prevent needless death. The punishment for illegal border crossing should not be death any more than it is the punishment for burglary or perjury.
The ACLU has a better idea of basic American values than MM in this case. Don’t kill people for minor crimes.

One of m Professors is a ACLU supporter and worked for them for several years. Shocking, I know (sarc) One day near the end of class he began to ramble on about how important “our civil liberties are and how we must support orgs like AI and the ACLU to protect them from the Bush Government” I challenged him about the founding of said ACLU and the goals of it’s founder and some other cases it got involved in. He tried to answer, started whining about how people spread lies about good organizations and told everyone to leave. I wonder if I will pass?
They are not being “killed”. They put this on themselves! They suffer the consequences of their actions. Life is unfair, too bad.

Here’s how you avoid dying while crossing the border: stay home and find a job, or petition your own government for a paycheck.

Operation Gatekeeper has not”caused” any deaths, the unfortunate victims chose to cross illegally, and chose to take risks that didn’t work out so well for them. By the way, I believe it was Bill Clinton and Janet Reno who were instrumental in Operation Gatekeeper.

When people ask me what the ACLU is, I just tell them “It’s 3 lies in four words.” They almost never get it.
Solution:
Step 1: Install high-output sprinklers along the border.
Step 2: Charge sprinklers with a mixture of BBQ sauce, A-1 and “essence of bacon,” and activate sprinklers.
Step 3: Release big, mean stray dogs along border.
Step 4: Enjoy a more secure America.
Correction. This will continue even after (God forbid) out next 9/11. The ACLU has never, and will never care about the freedom and safety of this nation.

As a foreign agent of Mexico I belive it would be illegal for the ACLU to contend any legal matters not directly related to Mexico…
Why are the ACLU not confined in Guantanamo Bay?
Operation: Gatekeeper hasn’t killed 400 people. 400 people took the risks attendant to breaking the law (i.e. dealing with coyotes and other disreputable characters, or crossing treacherous terrain) with fatal consequences. In essence, they are largely responsible for their own demise. It’s tragic, but it’s not our fault.

I’m with Mark Jaquith. The ACLU does some good things, but can be extremely frustrating even to us social libertarian types. My guess is that most on this board who express the most vitriol toward the ACLU do so from a hard Christian right point of view.
What?!? Others have addressed this, so I won’t go into the fact that these people are engaging in risky behavior that has a known possible consequence of death. It’s still sad, but it is not as though they are being executed, which is how you make it sound.
I do want to point out that even without “Operation Gatekeeper” there is a significant risk to illegally sneaking across the border. The dessert, the smugglers, etc… there are many factors. Given this, I would argue that the actions of the ACLU are very irresponsible. They are, in essence, lobbying for more accessibility for border-jumpers which means encouraging more people to engage in this risky behavior.
Prevention of needless death would actually result from stopping people before they even think of illegally entering this country. It would prevent the needless deaths of illegal aliens and the needless deaths of victims of illegal aliens in the U.S.

It is the Mexican government that should be credited with the death of every single intruder crossing the border. After all, it is their failure to run their own country that sends them here in the first place.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I’m attending a conference in Mexico so I thought I’d check out Fodors online. Of course we know from previous posts that Mexico is much tougher on visitors/immigrants, but this still aggravates me:

Videos of prepubescent girls being raped and bound with rope, “seen and heard crying“.
Last September he plead guilty to a SINGLE count of receiving child pornography and got seven years.

From here on out anyone who has been maimed, has lost a family member, been sexually assaulted etc. by an illegal alien from Mexico should have class action lawsuits against Mexico AND the ACLU. Seems like the real start of issues with the ACLU began when California decided it was OK for a non-profit lawyer to collect legal fees when sueing the government. This one legislative action has supplied the ACLU with cash and desire to sue in every direction for the money. A far cry from the days of volunteer work, and valid causes of the past.

Whats wrong with this Mexican government where they can’t provide a first world economy and they have to depend on other nations to create jobs for its citizens? As others have said no one forces them to cross the desert and they should spend their energy on forcing the government to clean up its act. President Fox at one time even asked Prime Minister Harper if he could absorb some of his people in Canada but I never heard what Harper said in reply. Its time these Latin American governments to be on their own instead of importing their third world status to other nations.
