Joey Vento takes on the cowards

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 26, 2008 10:22 AM

You know Joey Vento. One of my favorite Philly figures who tells it like it is.

The proud American son of Italian immigrants who stood up for assimilation at his famous cheesesteak restaurant, Geno’s, Vento successfully staved off a city “human rights” panel’s attempt to squelch his free speech. He defended a simple sign in his store that is still there today, telling customers: “”This is America. When ordering please speak English.”

Vento continues to voice his assimilationist message. He’s taking on the Democrat cowards who avoided the issue during the Pennsylvania primary and today he’s debating open-borders zealot Geraldo Rivera during a live debate in Philly to be broadcast on the Dom Giordano show on 1210AM WPHT. It’s a sold-out event:

On Tuesday, Primary Day, Barack Obama went across the street to Pat’s for a cheesesteak.

Same day, Hillary Clinton had a chicken cheesesteak with Italian greens in the Philadelphia suburbs.

To Geno’s owner Joey Vento, such decisions showed such a lack of courage that neither Democrat deserves to be president.

“If they don’t have the guts to come here and talk about the immigration problem … they’re not capable of running our country,” he said.

Tomorrow afternoon, Vento will take on Geraldo Rivera in a soldout debate on immigration at the Inquirer and Daily News Building at Broad and Callowhill Streets. The discussion will be carried live during Dom Giordano’s 1-to-4 p.m. show on WPHT (1210 AM, “The Big Talker”)…

… The last candidate to stop by Ninth and East Passyunk for a photo op was Republican Rudy Giuliani in October.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, went to Pat’s King of Steaks, Ninth and Wharton, where they ordered theirs “Whiz with” - avoiding John Kerry’s famed faux pas there four years ago of ordering a cheesesteak hoagie with Swiss.

Hillary Clinton avoided both landmarks, grabbing her chicken steak at Boccella’s restaurant while in Conshohocken.

“They’re both dummies, as far as I’m concerned,” said Vento.

Vento demonstrates how Straight Talk is done right:

“I’m disappointed in McCain, too, you know,” he said of John McCain, the likely Republican nominee.

“What I like about him is he’s probably got about 40 percent of conservative left in him,” Vento said.

If the Arizona senator stops in, maybe he’d learn a thing or two from Vento and get straightened out, the South Philly politicial whiz said.

“I have no problem with legal immigration,” he added. “… You shouldn’t be rewarded for not obeying the law.”

You can listen live to 1210am at the WPHT website here.

Give ‘em hell, Joey!

Jungatheart, I only lived in Philly for about a year but I had some Italian friends there and going to their houses for dinner was always an amazing affair. Everybody had to shout over top of everybody else in order to be heard except at the dinner table. If my experience is any indicator, I do not think Geno can be shouted down by any man … much less by Jerry Rivera.

Just my two cents and we will have to see what we will see but my money is staying on Geno.

well, i guess Teddy Roosevelt was a racist then with his view on assimilation and immigration….

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

Anyway, this is an interesting attempt by Mr. Vento. But wonder how his treatement would be for legal tourists with no English knowledge.

I am afraid all these attempts are just making things more beauracratic and hasslesome for LEGA immigrants. An e.g. would be SAVE act in Colorado, barely affecting illegals.

Having traveled over a good portion of the world, strangely I have never had any major issues ordering the local food in the local language. I may or may not have come across any signs requiring me to speak the local language as my reading and writing skills are much more lacking than my verbal skills in any of these additional languages.

However, before I go anywhere, I learn food (What the foods are called and how to order them) how to get somewhere or ask directions depending on local transportation, how to find the restrooms and how to order beer.

If I spend more time there, I learn more. Unlike the US, it is very common in many cultures to learn more than one language and even among the other expatriates I know, English is the common language.

That is not to say it would not happen but it would be much more unlikely than you may imagine I think.

I think that lgm misses the point(Sorry, I know I’m not supposed to feed the troll, but I can’t help it, he or she is really ticking me off with this one).

Lgm, my grandfather came over to the country from the Azores in the ’20s as a legal immigrant without a penny to his name(quite literaly). He worked from sunup to sundown (again, quite literaly) to save enough money to buy some land and start what would become a successful almond ranch here in the central valley of CA.

Along the way, he got his citizenship (which he would proudly tell anyone who asked)and not only learned English, but also taught other Portuguese people how to read and write. Yes, he dealt with racism and prejucide, and unfortunately that is something that immigrants to probably any country have to deal with to an extent. But he dealt with it, and without the assistance of the left wing apologists who seem today to be less concerned with making it fair for legal immigrants because they are busy whining about the poor illegals who break our laws.

And before you smugly think I am talking without knowing anything, I work in the field of public assistance, and so I deal daily with the difference in illegals who want benefits but don’t want to do what is necessary to help their families(read that to mean come here legally) and those immigrants who use the system for what it was intended for; temporary assistance.

I think that you should be ashamed of yourself for using Mr. Vento’s grandparents to support your arguements. I’m sure if they were alive today, they would probably support his views because they would probably understand the concept of working hard to gain what you want instead of having it handed to you on a silver platter.

My grandparents and great grandparents came from Sicily through Ellis Island. The difference between them and the illegal immigrant who sneaks across the border is they did it they right way. They felt blessed and were proud to become a US citizen. They learned the language and assimilated into the US culture, and yet they still were proud of where they came from. They knew where they were was better than where they came from and it was our society and culture that made it that way. But they also brought with them a work ethic and a determination to contribute to their new home and country and not be a burden. These are the words they spoke and the actions by how they lived. They were not trying nor would they think to ask the government to support them.

The majority of illegals are not here to assimilate but maintain their language and culture. Many areas that illegals and even some legals have settled do not seem like you are in the US but in another country. When I was younger and walked through the Italian neighborhoods in Brooklyn, NY I still new I was in the US, the signs were in English and the merchants spoke English (some better than others). Everybody was welcome no matter what their nationality. Go to some areas today and the signs are in the native language, the merchants do not always speak English, and in a restraunt if you don’t know the language you can’t order. You are made to feel uncomfortable and not welcome. Not all are like this but many are.

But you have to be willing to make sacrifices and work hard to acheive the dream (Sorry I didn’t post sooner, but I was outside playing with my power tools!)

Naw, I learned a long time ago by the time I need to find the restroom, I have likely consumed too much beer. Thus, if I find the bathroom first … well, it makes things a little easier. Ironic.

My grandparents also came through Ellis Island from Northern Italy. Not only did they do it legally, but their single biggest goal was to become good Americans. They learned the language, worked hard and did everything they could to see to it their kids had a better life than they had. Not only did they have to work hard for everything they had, but they faced discrimination without whining about it. They got nothing, but ended up with everything because of their work ethic and integrity.

By contrast, today’s illegal immigrants want to come here, use our social services, steal our identities, send money back home and have anchor babies so they can stay and soak up even more.

I have one big question for you, lgm. Where did your ancestors come from? Were they given handouts? Did they have to learn English? Were they patriotic, maybe even fight in one or both of the World Wars? How would they feel about the sort of foolishness you’re espousing? Let me guess, they just weren’t enlightened like you.

    What does this tell us?

I think, due to the public outcry when the bill was in congress, NO candidate will attempt to introduce it, even after the election.

So, at the end of the day, the “Immigration Issue” isn’t even on the table…It’s a push.

Anyway, this is an interesting attempt by Mr. Vento. But wonder how his treatement would be for legal tourists with no English knowledge.

Obviously you have not read the original story or sidebars. To update you: He asks everyone to order in English. If you don’t have any, or little English he and his folks will help you. Very Old School American. Gotta love it.

    Ironic.

Back in the day, immigrants came to flee persecution. Naturally, the democrats want them here at the expense of national security so they can register to vote illegally and get welfare checks while the liberal elite use cheap labor for their own profiteering.

See, LGM, immigrants back in the day WEREN’T a burden on society. In fact, illegal labor laws practiced by DEMOCRATS is what this country is built on: slavery, indentured servitude, unhealthy work environment.

All in the name of SOCIAL PROGRESS at any cost, which is the mission of liberals.

In fact, you’d rather have Peruvian farmers starve in order to preserve your ozone layer as you drive your SUV’s to go camping with the Sierra Club.

And why don’t liberals live next to the people they give welfare too?
