United Nations angry at BBC
Who to root against? One is an anti-semitic, state-subsidized, bloated, corrupt friend of despots and thugs and enemy of the West, and the other…
Hmm. No,that won’t work, will it? Let me start again.
The United Nations doesn’t like being investigated, and it doesn’t think a free press exposing its shortcomings is helpful for World Peace. Recently the BBC actually stirred itself to look into corruption by U.N. peacekeeping troops in Congo. Apparently they were speculating in local gold, detaining residents unlawfully (just like Gitmo? No, unlawfully) and according to the BBC (but denied by the UN) assisting gunrunners who were arming the rebel militias.
Which gives the UN the blue-helmet blues:
At UN headquarters there is both irritation and unease over the BBC story.
Irritation because officials regard the allegations of gold smuggling in the Congo by Pakistani peacekeepers as rehashed.
Unease because, as the head of UN peacekeeping, Jean-Marie Guehenno, put it in a letter to the BBC: “Every incident of misconduct by the Blue Helmets diminishes public confidence in our work and weakens the institution of peacekeeping.”
So a rare congrats to the BBC for afflicting the comfortable and doing something worthwhile with the British taxpayer’s pound.
I liked this part:
The UN has come a long way from the days when one official observed that “boys will be boys,” when commenting on a sexual abuse scandal involving UN peacekeepers.
Can you imagine the outrage if a U.S. official said that about, say, Abu Ghraib?

Kinda reminds me of Putin’s Russia.
The U.N. is so inept that they can be ignored like some bug crawling around in the dirt.
What? They haven’t blamed George Bush yet?
I guess the leftist world press has taken all of the high hanging fruit their prehensile appendages could reach and they decided to snack on some low-hanging, though decidedly unflavorful, fruit of a different stripe.
Have you driven past the UN lately? It’s a hovel. Put some paint on at least!
Reminds me of 60 mins-placing a bomb in a chevy truck, blowing it up and saying “thats what happens if you drive a chevy truck”.
When they lost the civil suit Dan Rather says “How the hell can the public believe us with rulings like this?”
He blamed it on the courts, Bush was still a kid I guess.
“boys will be boys”
that defense actually works somewhere?!
-Jean-Marie Guehenno,
Head of UN Peacekeeping
-The Liberal Democrat Strategy For the Past Forty Years
It works both ways.
Jean-Marie Guehenno is a French diplomat.
I guess that’s what you get when you put a diplomat in charge of a peacekeeping force.
And since when did anyone in this country have confidence in anything the U.N. has done lately. They are a waste of time.
I once had to deal with a resident who was very insistent that there was a United Nations military camp up here in central Pennsylvania, and that they would be taking action against Harrisburg. I calmed the resident by telling him that the UN couldn’t successfully occupy a car with 10 of their soldiers and that the residents of my area were probably better armed (and better trained).
and far more bitter!

Kinds of reminds me of many politicians and all criminals.
UN=Unquestionably nitwits.
Given the choice I must say the BBC is the lesser of 2 evils. But let’s not assume it’s a free press any more than we assume any public confidence in the UN.
Bitter, not us! Our properties haven’t lost value, we have an unemployment rate well below the national average, plenty of entertainment and culture around and we can afford to have a one income household and a decent house to live in. I’m from the DC area, and I’m not bitter, I’m doing the happy dance!

ROFL
“Since we’re the absolute moral authority of the world, working towards the greatest good, you sure as hell better not jeopardize us by criticizing us! That’s just mean! Think of the children!”
Imagine if the Holy Father said anything to that effect; libs would be all over him like… I’m too tired to think of a good simile.
Isn’t the U.S. taxpayer the largest $$$$ “contributer” of the corrupt U.N.?
I want my money back!
I listen to a fair amount of NPR and the BBC late at night when NPR isn’t playing. I heard two of these reports, and the BBC pulled no punches. The reporter was agitated enough to sound like he was talking about George Bush. This guy has gone to a lot of trouble and a fair amount of personal risk to get this story. When he brought it met the head investigator for the UN she told him that she had read something about it a few months ago, but acted like it was no big deal at all.
The Indian and Pakistani governments are pretty much denying that there is any wrong doing at all. The Pakistani General acted very confident that any wrong doing would be found out and punished quickly, if it was happening.

SHoward and OneofThem:
White on rice? I don’t know… that’s a little boring. Obama on Arugula? Maybe? It’s late, I’m tired. My brain….
Too characterize the BBC as mere Jew haters is a bit disingenuous. They are haters of all Western civilization. Creepy buggers that infest the news room like a disease.
A organization comprised of many corrupt third world thugs, dictators, socialist and anti-Semites are involved in gun running, gold smuggling and detaining residents unlawfully?
What a shock!
And yet when there are mere allegations (that later turn out to be false) of British and US troop misconduct in Iraq, the press jumps over that story like flies over … poop.
The fact is, the abuse done by UN peacekeepers is far worse than anything done by British or US troops in Iraq. The latter makes mistakes in the heat of battle, while the former meticulously plans its exploitation of the people. Running the UN’s Sex for Food, Guns for Crooks, Gold for Despots program requires no small amount of managerial effort!
The US should pull out of the UN. After all, they are unwanted there. Let’s see how quickly the UN disintegrates after that.
pjtips, remember the old adage “keep your friends close, your enemies closer”? The UN needs to remain very close because they are most defiantly not our friends.
The gap in trustworthiness, reliability, and effectiveness between UN troops and US troops is astounding. If a country’s life hung in the balance, which force would mean certain liberation and which force would mean certain slavery? We all know the answer.
Remember, this is the American Liberal’s preferred military.
Reminds me of 60 mins-placing a bomb in a chevy truck, blowing it up and saying “thats what happens if you drive a chevy truck”.
Actually, that was Jane Pauley’s big idea on NBC’s Dateline.
The U.N. is a useless org. they need to be removed from the soil of the U.S.
I’m currently living near Geneva, and the UN is seen mostly as a great employment opportunity, not as a force for good. It’s like Congress, once you are in, it’s almost impossible for people to get rid of you.
Land that I Love:
I think the simile you might be looking for is “like white stains on a blue dress”. I think that works pretty well!
I think you guys practice hating every morning, just like the hate rallies in 1984 (the book). Whatever faults the BBC may have, it is not an evil organization.
only a “hater”, like lgm, could could “love” the BBC….
Lgm,
Nice to know you dropped your acid this morning. 1984? Wha?
So, you know which person is better than the other and which “organization” is not evil?
I have seen the UN at work in Haiti. Don’t try your crap on me. They are truly evil. Well, maybe not if you consider:
Raping children – not evil.
Supplying gangs with guns and ammo – not evil.
Watching missionaries (witnessing) being kidnapped and not lifting a finger – not evil.
Sorry of course you do not think these things evil. You are, after all, lgm.
Lgm, you keep using that word, but I don’t think it means what you think it means.
I don’t hate the BBC, I distrust the BBC. Subtle, but important difference.
lgm, don’t you see, it’s our job to label everybody evil (in your estimation) and it’s your job to label us evil. Oh and to tell us who is and who isn’t evil. That’s how this works. One big happy family.
For all the problems, the U.N. has done much. They help regulate international commerce, immunize children, and have kept us out of a third world war. It gives nations a chance to speak to each other rather than shoot. Yes, there is corruption, but it pales in comparison to the great things it has done. Have any of you listened or watched the BBC? Again they are not perfect, but far superior to anything on the American new channels. All we have here are warehouse fires, missing blonde girls, and sex scandals.
Oh please be more specific, cuz personally I’m the human version of Disneyland.
WOW, messed up this morning. BBC may not be evil but don’t try that UN is not on me as you can see it boils my blood.
Stopped drinking coffee and I am all messed up – LOL
Apologies to lgm.
No offense caligulajones, but there seems to be a running theme of having to watch (or listen) to something or someone (Wright) in its entirety in order to gain a real grasp on what they have to offer. I couldn’t disagree more.
You give them far more credit than they deserve.
Subjective.
No
Really?
Really?
No mention of the havoc wreaked by the Islamics in the country. Way to gloss over a monumental problem…
We really need to dismantle this house of criminality!
I’m so use to the bbc inciting hatred against the U.S. and Israel, especially in the UN and the Mideast, that I was actually surprised to read this story.
Apparently the UN’s actions in the Congo were so egregious that not even their number one cheerleader, the bbc, could continue to ignore them in good conscience. (Who knew they had one, a conscience that is.)
BBC = useless, leftwing propaganda machine
UN = worse than useless, anti-semitic, dictator protecting, corruption machine
I’m not sure my enotion is hate. Only the sad understanding that the world would be much better off without either. Oh. And no more Jimmy Carter also.
I’m not sure what you are refering to here, but we have a media that cares more about Hanna Montana’s back then the people with out health care. And what about all the other missing children? Why does the news media concentrate on only the few? Is it money or just lazyness?

Sorry havok, they can’t be ignored, because taxpayers are paying to keep this bug alive. The money could be put to much better use. But, I take your point.
“Every incident of misconduct by the Blue Helmets diminishes public confidence in our work and weakens the institution of peacekeeping.”
What they’re really saying here is, “every incident of misconduct that’s reported diminishes public confidence”.
UNimportant
UNnecessary
UNwanted
Nowhere will you find a more retched hive of scum and villains (Paraphrasing)
Refunds for the American taxpayers AND a promise to UNburden us from this costly tumor growing on our nickel. Am I the only one that is UNappreciative of their misguided “concerns”?
Almost forgot … First ABC holding an (almost?) actual D E B A T E and not allowing candidates to pat each other on the back? Larry King asking real questions? Now the BBC biting one of the hands that it panders to?
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World we live in LOL
The UN is theoretically a good idea. Unfortunately, it quickly became a magnet for that particular brand of smooth-talking, sleek, do-nothing, corrupt, diplomat who pervade the governments of the World. They feather their own nests, make sure their families and friends are taken care of, and they could care less about the problems of the World. Kofi Annan is a prime example. The problem is exacerbated by the apparent lack of internal and external policing mechanisms with teeth.
Well, the way the UN dealt with crises like the Congo and Darfur is a pretty good indicator of where their priorities lie.
My question is: why haven’t we booted them the hell out of the US yet? Put them in a neutral territory that can abide their corruption, say Geneva, Switzerland. I’m sure third world dictator bullion and UN graft will be perfect together there.
Spoken by a practiced Christian hater. Spoken like a person whose sole purpose on this blog is to demonstrate how much he hates not only Conservatives but people who don’t fall in line with his beloved Democratic Socialist Party.
When you say stuff like this, I begin to wonder how “neutral” you are in the classroom, lgm. This statement is amazing given the level of vitriole you practice on a daily basis.
If you were to look in your mirror, your reflection would be laughing at you.
I think that Mark Steyn expressed it best when he noted that the UN was filled with both good and bad countries. The initial hope was that the bad countries would try to rise up to meet with good countries. That is like mixing milk and poop. It doesn’t make the poop taste like milk, it makes the milk taste like poop. Such is the UN.
Save the paint. . . just close it, withdraw (including the U.S. funds associated with membership), give them a 30 day eviction notice and sell the building to some developers at market value.
The Thunder Run has linked to this post in the – Web Reconnaissance for 04/29/2008 A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often.
I hate to feed the troll, but lgm evil is as evil does and currently the BBC has been acting very evil. They support terrorists and fascists. They regularly support anything anti-Jew or anti-Captialism. They love raw power and are jealous of those who have it and spend as much time as possible sucking up to them.
Any group of UN troops not led and run exclusively by an American Military Officers and NCOs is by definition a gang of cowards, thieves, perverts, and murderers. Whether it is deserting helpless civilians to be massacred in tribal genocide, actively raping children, stealing food from the starving, black market activity and gun-running, nothing is to low or despicable for the Blue Helmets to descend to. Whenever liberals discuss the UN as a peace keeping organization, I remember their countless innocent victims, whose numbers already are greater than all the Japanese killed by the 2 atomic weapons needed to end WW 2 (for those who might be tempted to describe the Japanese as victims, it is important to remember that the Japanese killed more civilians in Nanking in 1933 than died in both atomic blasts combined, including using pitchforks to slaughter infants. Even the German Ambassador was sickened by the slaughter of the Chinese and why Japan remains hated in most of Asia. My apologies for not mentioning the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos and other native peoples and the tens of thousands of British and American POWS murdered as well by the Japanese.)
