Obama’s “big press conference” on Wright: “I’m outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle;” Wright’s remarks “a bunch of rants that aren’t grounded in truth”
Scroll down for press conference blogging…Allah’s got vid clips here
What, pray tell, could Barack Obama possibly say now to undo the damage of his two decades of bad judgment about Jeremiah Wright?
Will he weigh in on black liberation theology? Wright’s phrenological discourse? How about Wright’s defense of his comparison between the Roman soldiers who killed Jesus and the US Marine Corps?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Maybe we’ll find out:
Obama was asked about Rev. Jeremiah Wright just now by a woman in Winston-Salem who tells the audience to watch his PBS interview, which will quell their concerns.
“I’m going to be having a big press conference afterward to talk about this,” he responded, then referred back to a story the woman told about a mother having to borrow month to get to work.
“This is diverting attention from the first story that you told,” Obama said.
So, he’s advising supporters to watch the Bill Moyers interview. What about the NAACP and National Press Club diatribes?
2:00pm Eastern. Here we go. Barack press conference is on:
“I’m outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle. The person that I saw yesterday was not the person I met 20 years ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate. I believe they do not accurately portray the perspective of the black church. They certainly don’t portray mine. If he considers this political posturing, then he doesn’t know me very well. And I don’t know him well either.”
AIDS conspiracy: “Ridiculous proposition.”
Farrakhan support and analogy of Marines/terrorism: “They offend me. They rightly offend all Americans. They should be denounced. And that’s what I’m doing clearly and unequivocally here today.”
It’s antithetical to our campaign. It’s antithetical to what I’m about. It’s not what America stands for. Rev. Wright does not speak for me. He doesn’t speak for our campaign. I can’t prevent him from making these outrageous remarks…When I say I find these statements appalling, I mean it…Makes me angry and saddens me.”
Q&A.
1) Why the change in tone between now and yesterday? Obama: “I hadn’t seen it…He wasn’t just defending himself. He was presenting a worldview…What particularly angered me was the suggestion that my previous remarks were political posturing…”
Ok. Let’s be clear then: It wasn’t the fact that Wright has been spewing this same recycled crap for years that finally got Obama mad. It was that he finally realized it was hurting his campaign. And he was personally miffed by Wright’s insults against him.
2) What does this say about your judgment to superdelegates? “The person I saw was not the person that I’d come to know over 20 years…Shocked me, surprised me.”
Bullcrap.
Anyone with eyes yesterday saw that Wright’s was a finely-honed, time-tested act.
2:11pm Eastern. “Now is the time to pull together.” Refers to dire economic situation. “That didn’t matter to Rev. Wright. What mattered to him was commanding center stage.”
“I don’t think he showed much concern for me…or for what we’re trying to do in this campaign.”
3) Question: Have you spoken with Wright? “No.”
BO: “This has obviously put strains on the relationship” between Obama and Trinity Church.
“I want people to understand who I am. In some ways, the things Wright said yesterday directly contradict my life, issues, service, what I’ve said in my books, in my convention speech, announcement for president, everything I’ve said on the campaign trail. What I tried to do in Philadelphia was provide a context and lift up some of the contradictions and complexities in America and try to make something constructive out of it. There wasn’t anything constructive out of yesterday. All it was was a bunch of rants that aren’t grounded in truth…It was a show of disprespect to me.”
5) Question: What did Michelle Obama think? BO: “She was similarly angered.”
6) Question: Do you agree with Wright that attacks on him are attacks on black church? How important is black liberation theology?
BO: “I’m not a theologian.”
But he’s the Obamessiah!
BO: “I went to church and listened to sermons. What I heard, there’s an emphasis on importance of social struggle, striving for equality, justice, fairness, a social gospel. Rather than fancy word like black liberation theology, he uses social gospel.” Didn’t view attacks as attacks on black church.
2:23pm Eastern. There have been unfair caricatures, but “yesterday, he caricatured himself.”
Obama says he tried contacting Wright before his Philadelphia speech. He was on a cruise. When he returned, they did speak. But Obama will not elaborate. “But what I can say is that I told him I found the snippets of past sermons inexcusable.”
“There’s been great damage” to relationship with Wright. “Won’t be the same.” Denies that Wright was his spiritual mentor. But he married Michelle and I, baptized my children, prayed with us, etc. etc.

I can hardly wait to hear this one !!
“This is diverting attention”
um, b.o., just ’cause you don’t like to discuss it does NOT make it a diversion …
/sooo, how’s that vp slot lookin?
He’s learned how to hypnotize over a TV signal, and wants to make sure everyones watching, when he attempts to make everyone forget Rev. Jerry exists…
Please keep us up-dated Michelle. I do not listen to bho, but get my news on him here and HA. There is not one single thing he can say to make it ‘all better’ at this point, but this should be interesting to see him try.
L
“…now toss me my thirty coin, I’m outta here.”
Heh…
20 years in his church, and now he’s outraged?
Well, better late than never, but the cynic in me thinks it’s all about trying to save votes…
I could Listen to that Jerry Wright all day. What a speaker.
Of course whatever either says is simply misdirection.
\
On another subject?
Is it required for the president to be sworn in a justice? Or could President Obama be sworn in by another person, such as a Minister or Reverend?
The question is, will the masses realize this has all been staged by B. Hussein and Wrigth?
First he throws grandma under the bus, now it’s Wright’s turn.
Maybe he should dump more fliers into peoples yards and pools denouncing “rev wrong”
Oblahma “dumbo” Drop
If Obama’s feelings are true, it shouldn’t have taken this long to say them. There were plenty of outrageous comments before this past weekend that should have been dealt with in the same manner. IMO, this is merely damage control. Wright was Obama’s moral compass and mentor for 20 years. How could Obama not know what Wright is? Once again, Obama takes us for fools.
At this point BO can not say anything that will make this whole mess just go away. It will linger as long as “rev” Wright is out in public and beyond. IMHO.
Can we all chip in and buy Obama a shovel and pair of waders? Because he certainly keeps digging the hole deeper and deeper…
Sounds like a gas bag deflating….hot air moving real fast….
Hey Barry, yer shoulders gettin’ sore from all that back paddlin’ yet??
Heh. I thought he could no more denounce Wright than he could denounce the black community. Someone should ask him if he is now rejecting the entire black community.
I visited my parents for dinner last night. My 87-year-old mother thought Wright was wonderful. Her own word was “mesmerizing,” and she was living proof. Her Catholic friend had told her the same thing. She read Bob Herbert in The New York Times this morning and called me at work to tell me: “I was duped.”
” I believe they do not accurately portray the perspective of the black church.”
Well, I don’t know – I don’t go to black churches, but Greta had a black minister on her show last night, and according to him, it _was_ the perspective of the black church. I don’t remember his name (her guest) but she’s had him on before, when the award was being given to Wright from the group in Tx. Someone probably has the tape…
Why is it that when Obama gets bitter, he loses his religion? I thought he told us it works the other way around.
…by the guy whose sermon I named my book after, whose church I attended for twenty odd years, who married my wife and I, and who baptized my children.
/snort
Lay down with dogs, get up with fleas, etc.
Darksean #8, I agree.
Michelle, perhaps a guest blog from “Toothsome biracial newscaster Soledad O’Brien [who] began her television career fetching coffee as an unpaid intern at Boston station WBZ” to explain her infatuation with Wright!
And next week it will be Michelle Obama…
What’s Obama supposed to say? “OK, now I denounce him?” And if that’s the case, why didn’t he just come out and say so earlier, in his “brilliant” Philadelphia speech?
Obama’s pattern is to backpedal only as far as the evidence requires. His association with Wright is no exception.
I agree with the assessment on the Power Line blog that it’s too late for Obama to do a “Sistah Soujah” on Wright, but not too late for a McGovern-style “Thomas Eagleton” jettisoning of what’s turned out to be an albatross around his neck.
Pay no attention to that nutty uncle behind the curtain!
Is Obama having a “typical white person” reaction?
GASP!!!! So after TWENTY YEARS this tiger just up and changed his stripes? Oh yeah, I believe that one.
Seriously though, Obama…when will you be outraged by the words and actions of Bill Ayers?
He doesn’t speak very well when under the gun, sounds like an utter fool. ah ah ah…… prepared speeches is all he can spit out. off the hip he’s a joke.
Will this stop the bleeding or will it send Obama even further down? I hope the good Rev. takes offence and starts railing on Obama. Maybe divulging the Obama did know how his opinions on 911, aids, etc……
From Wright himself yesterday…
Damage control, that’s all this is. Keep it coming Wright, I hope someone gives you a camera and mic for the next 6 months. Buy stock in popcorn, it’s going to be fun show.
“Is it required for the president to be sworn in a justice?”
iirc, a judge must conduct the swearing in — by tradition it is the chief justice, tho there are famous examples of it being someone else — LBJ by that TX judge, C. Coolidge by his father, a local magistrate.
if you are implying b.o. could take the oath of office from rev. wrong, no that is not plausible.
Question: Does this clear disavowal of Wright and what he stands for then negate the Obama’s marraige, the baptisms of his kids, the inspiration for his book, the inspiration to become a Christian?
If I denounced my childhood pastor (who married my wife and I and baptized my 3 kids) as a fraud, I’d feel at least some urge to get a redo on those personally and religiously important ceremonies.
Also, if Obama had a certain disdain for the religious prior to his catfight

a big steaming pile.
Obama listened to this foolishness for years. Wright didn’t suddenly become insane.
my head does not screw on and off, Barack.
We’ve been doing that for decades by trying to level the playing field for all. But people like you (BO) and Rev. Wright who play the victim, who play the race card, ensure that there will always be an adversarial relationship between blacks and everyone else.
Hello? You should have severed your relationship with the church 20 years ago when you first got wind of the type of hatred being espoused from the pulpit!
Understatement of the year.
Barack doesn’t lie as well as the Clintons.
OOPS ACCIDENTAL SUBMIT…
…prior to his catfight, how must he feel about religion now?
And, at the point Obama loses the election, there will still be rioting in the streets of every major city. Better he loses to Hillary now. Besides, I’m still cranky over his statements in S.F. about guns/Bibles. Somehow, Obama’s loss will be the fault of the Republican Party… and as weak as they are, they’ll admit to it. You’re right Citizen Duck – getting off that porch without fleas is the hard part.
So, in 20 years, even with spotty attendance, Obama never heard this kind of seminal speech from his Pastor? And we’re supposed to believe it?
You know, had he said, “Well, to be honest, I usually nod off about 5 minutes into any of his sermons,” I’d believe it more than, “I’ve never heard him talk like this!”
#20 says it well. I can only hope that, should BHO be the Dem candidate, McCain drives home the “judgement/character” point.
horse.barn door.lock.
nice try b.o., but this gets ya another FAIL …
/one week to IN & NC — and El Rushbo said, “Let there be CHAOS!”
My crazy uncle has gone TOO FAR!
Seriously, this is what Obama pretty much had to say, that Wright somehow CHANGED from then to now. Not from what we’ve seen before, this is exactly who he was, and is.
Obama is a liar. This man has always been a racist, hate-filled, pseudo-minister.
I don’t believe it, either. The public has come to know Wright only recently, and could see right away that he was a conspiracy nut and a race fear monger. Either Obama’s a complete fool, or he subjected himself and his family to Wright’s ravings for 20 years just for political advantage, or he bought into Wright’s paranoid philosophy so long ago that it feels like “common sense” to him now. Given his other radical associations, I’d bet on the latter.
Stumblin, bumblin, fumblin….
good grief.
Not until footage of his class ends up on the nightly news. So the short answer is never. (Unless Hillary has video.)
And aj, that’s exactly why he never wants another “debate”. He’s only good with softball, rehearsed questions.
Obama is all Ummm, Ummm, Ahhh, Uhhhh today, but I have to admit this guy can make Ummm sound serious and thoughtful. LOL
Obama to the world.
There is nothing you can say to tear me away from my
guyrevThere is nothing do to steer me away from my rev.
There’s nothing you do, cause I’m stuck like glue to my rev.
Seriously, is their anything he can really say to stop the hemorrhaging?
It would be one thing if this guy only belonged to this church a few years (5 max) but I don’t buy it. I mean he married him and mouth, he baptized their two children (wonder if they viewed their babies as punishments-just asking) and he was in the congregation for years. I mean it’s one thing to doze off in a sermon, space out, etc. but this guy is so loud I don’t think it’s possible.
A lot of people will take Obama’s words at face value.
The Pressies will turn on a dime from suggestions that any criticism of Wright (and Obama maintaining an association with him) is racist to “Obama denounced him so it’s now old news – and if you talk about it, you’re a racist.”
KosKids & HuffPuffs will go nuts – “Obama caved to the right wingers” will be their mantra.
Limbaugh just said “Obama chose this church for political reasons” – I cannot agree more.
“it takes less than 20 minutes to see wright is a race-baiting loon, never mind 20 years!” — m. steyn
It is about character,courage,morality,priciples,virtue,respect..loathsome,lurid,irredeemable,virulent,agitate,repugnannt,facetious and patronizing HOPE!
Rev. Wright is too loud for that lie to work. It would be more credible, and would get him points in the Mid-West, if he said that he put on tiny earphones to hear the football game during the sermons and so never heard a word of the Rev’s vitriol.
You’ve changed. I don’t know you anymore. Me and the kids are staying at my mom’s house until you get your act together.
Whatever Obie…
I hate people that treat me like I’m an idiot.
“These people are part of who I am”
Barack Obama
Question: How important is “liberation theology” in the black church, and why did you choose a church that preached “black liberation theology?”
Obama: I’m not a theologian, I just went to church for the sermons.
– So he doesn’t know what this whole “black liberation theology” thing is all about, he just liked the “hootin’ n hollerin’” from the pulpit…AND…after 20+ years, he never heard the sermons that Wright sold on DVD.
Obama appears to be corkscrewing himself into the ground with every new detail on this matter, and Wright seems to enjoy doing the screwing.
…..
“Unless I wasnt getting heat over it…then it would have been ok.”
Is that picture from today’s press conf.? If so it is amazing that American Flags appear at such convient times.
#55 –
Obie…lmao good one 30!
Wright’s been saying and Obama has been sitting for 20 years. What did Wright say yesterday that was different from the proud for sale video tapes by the church? This is the problem, for 20 years he and the wife sat there soaking up all this Black Liberation Theology.
Same old same old divisive race politics gone down the drain.
So you were sitting in the audience yesterday cheering Wright. Didn’t Obama just call you stupid for doing so?
obie jaun kidopey
it took him 24 hours to come up with this??
he does look spent. welcome to the big boys club.
“I’m not a theologian”
um, that’s like the 1st honest statement he’s made all day …
Dichotomies like that will be lost on the people who were doing the clapping.
I seem to recall earlier statements (paraphrasing from memory) from B.O. that went like “I don’t think my church particularly controversial” and the all time favorite “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black commmunity”.
Oooooops.
Right on, #38. Obummer couldn’t ignore Rev Wrong any longer, and he’s applying damage control to a damaged ship. I hope Wrong comes back at him. I’ve stocked up on popcorn, the buttered kind.
Thanks feebz! Obie has said some pretty divisive things himself. No apologies for that… just a stupid press conference so can “distance” himself from his mentor, preacher and bestest friend in the whole wide world of twenty years. I ain’t buyin’ it.
“And now for full coverage of Obama’s press conference today, we turn to MSNBC Senior Political Correspondent Chris Matthews…Chris?”
Chris Matthews: Umm…this was the SECOND greatest speech on race that I have ever heard.
Oh darn, I missed the chance to hear his eloquence. But I’m wondering if he’s disowned his typical white grandmother as well.
I couldn’t agree more. But be careful, Obama, any attack on Rev. Wright is an attack on the black church according to the Reverend. Is this becoming a political calculation where black votes are being traded for more numerous white votes?
No way to know if he’s telling the truth or lying. Wright said that Obama distanced himself from Wright because he’s a politician.
You would think that Wright is Obama’s friend, and wants him to get elected President, jokes that he could be the VP.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama told Wright to make some more controversial comments, so that Obama can later come out and say that he disagrees with these new ones … to be able to have ownership of the controversy.
Wright gets to say what he believes in his heart, Obama gets to distance himself from the remarks and ‘prove to moderate voters’ that he is more in line with their views, and Wright chuckles under his breath that their little scheme worked.
Good ol’ Wright got exactly what he’s been preaching for these 20+ years – a 1/2 black candidate that in all probability will lose, and when he loses Wright and his church (and many others like it) can claim the 1/2 white part of him was rejected by racist whites. That sly fox set this up from the beginning and Obama fell for it. Either way, the Church of Hate wins.
Makes my head hurt….
Obama and Wright should confront each other on Jerry Springer…
I’ve attended many different Churches in my time. Granted, some of the times I initially liked the Pastor, then learned more about him.
However, it NEVER took 20 years to learn about him.
Barack HUSSEIN Obama, don’t insult my intelligence.
Rev. Wright, you’re the Republicans best friend. Keep up the good work.
I wonder if the Obama campaign has been spending the past 24 hrs trying unsuccessfully to get Rev. Wright to call a press conference and retract all his statements, apologize to everyone in the world, and distance himself from himself.
Had Rev. Wright issued a public apology, BO probably could have stayed above the whole affair.
Knowing how the Rev acts, instead he probably cussed out the advisors and called BO an Uncle Tom.
Obama is as poor a public speaker as President Bush (post 2003) has become.
Way too many uncomfortable pauses, ummms, ahhhs, and the repeating of words to buy time to think, “What this is, is” etc.
IF YOU THINK JEREMIAH WRIGHT IS GOING TO LET OBAMA’S COMMENTS GO BY WITHOUT ANOTHER PRESS CONFERENCE YOU’RE CRAZY.
OLD JEREMIAH “I HATE THE U.S., WHITES, JEWS, IRISH, ITALIANS AND ANYONE NOT BLACK” WRIGHT IS NOT GOING TO ALLOW SOMEONE ELSE TO GET THE LAST WORD.
WATCH FOR MORE EYE ROLLING, EGO MANIAC RANTING, SHOULDER DANCING, MUSIC HISTORY LESSONS AND A LOT MORE RYHMING.
Obummer’s just miffed that he’s being questioned at all about Wright. It was okay to distance himself from the sermons but when the guy becomes certifiably crazy, then it’s time to say… I didn’t know that this was the type of guy he was for 20 years… even though I was in the pew, listening, using this church for all that it was worth to build my political fortunes.
Obummer is coming late to the party. This phony, public placation smacks of political expedience, not true “shock.” Obummer is just being the crapweasel politician that he has to be while Wright is just being the crazy, unhinged preacher man for his victims in the ‘hood. Oh and he’s cashin’ in on his 15 minutes of fame for all he’s worth too.
Did Obummer have a come to Jesus moment or was he in the middle of some “preacher damage control?”
I’m confused…so BO and all his defenders said the good Revs previous statements were just clips taken out of context. It didn’t represent what Obama had heard in the pews for 20 years. So is Obama trying to tell us that this is the frist time Wright’s said anything like this?!?! Or at the very least this is the first time he’s given his racist, hate-filled rants the proper context?
Obama should have just said “O.K., I admit it. I joined this guys church after college because I had some big time political ambitions. And 20 years ago, when you’re a young black wanna-be politician on the South Side of Chicago, you end up at this guy’s church. He was always a nut job, and I often scoffed at the gullible uneducated masses that bought his B.S., but that church was still the place to be to win the vote of those same gullible uneducated masses. Lot’s of us intellectual types were members, and we all knew this. Besides, I hardly attended church. Yeah, you caught me. I think church services suck. I like watching NFL pre-game shows…THAT’s how in touch I am with regular Joes. I don’t believe all the “religion” voo-doo crap. I just have to say I do and show up every once in while…those uneducated masses again, ya’know? Hey, I’m not saying churches are bad. They can sometimes help organize to promote social justice. Soup kitchens and stuff. Those are good…social justice in some god’s name, in the government’s name, I don’t care. But now I’ve realized this national thing…well…we ain’t on the South Side anymore. I’ve spent the last many hours with my political advisors trying to figure out a way to completely disassociate myself from this idiot. Man, I couldn’t believe Wright went in front of the media like that, acting like a clown. I should have known that this guys thirst for fame and power trumps even my own. So here I am, in front of the media, acting like a serious, thoughtful, progressive intellectual…the one who can Change your growing impression of me. I Hope.”
This is a very carefully phrased way of saying that what he heard were things like “NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!”. Sharpton and Wright are cut from the same cloth.
It seems to me that everything about this appears staged to make it look like Hillary invited Wright to speak publicly, BO gets to denounce those “views” and “comments” again without denouncing Wright as a racist, and BO will (later) appear to be totally shocked and amazed when he finds out a Hillary supporter was exploiting this senile old man who has obviously lost his mind even before his official retirement.
Be careful America. We are being played here!!!
Mayday! Mayday! We’re going down. Women, children, and Messiahs first.
#83 MostlyRight
I almost lost my soda on the computer screen. Bravo.
Oh Barry Oh- Say it ain’t so!
LOL.
You tool.
this is the problem with liberals fundamentally if you think about it.
Obama sought to address the surface of the problem…which fooled people for some time. only his patchwork is starting to show, and it’s starting to show how shoddy his original work was.
the speech he gave in PA is now irrelevant. any headway he made after that speech is gone. not to mention, that speech is starting to be his demise. it was in that speech Obama made some irrevocable statements. It was Obama who said that our perceptions o him were wrong. it was Obama who said he could no more disown him than his white grandmother. Obama painted himself into this corner with Wright…no one else.
no longer can republicans be blamed for taking his sermons out of context. no longer can republicans be blamed for making this a campaign issue.
between 9am-10am yesterday…everything republicans had been say was justified.
WHAAAAATEEVVVVVEERRRRRR!!!
Please.
It’s Obama’s version of A Series of Unfortunate Events…
Twenty years. Twenty years. There are only so many options. Obama is:
a racist
a liar
malleable
stupid
ignorant
up to no good
Sounds like a great POTUS resume.
I’m glad Obama is doing that! At least i’m glad for his kids… They won’t grow up in that church/cult! (i hope)
What Obama did today is slap on J.W’s face. The good thing about it is that
Maybe some of J.W.’s followers will wake up and realized they need to distant themselves from this racist Rev.as well.
Say. What’s that red, white and blue thingy behind him in the background? Is that a US flag? Where’d he find one…
The longer this issue stays out there, the worse it looks for the Obamessiah. The statements he makes raise more questions than answers. This is getting to be dead weight around his neck. I’m sure Hillary is somewhere cackling pretty good about now…
On my way home from work yesterday, Hannity was playing a clip from “The Audacity of Hope” in which Obama talks about the sermon Wright gave entitled “The Audicity of Hope.” This passage inspired him most
Now Obama can’t get in touch with his spititual mentor because Wright is on a cruise ship, apparently forcing Haitians to starve (or something of that ilk). Makes you wonder if Wright acutally believes the stuff he’s saying or if he’s just certifiable.
PS- #83
hahahahhahahhahahhahahha
Thanks for the coverage Michelle! It appears the Obamination is badly wounded from his association with the renegade reverend after all. Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! I do believe I am watching a campaign going down in flames and about to crash and burn. I know the press will do what they can to mitigate the damage, but if this doesn’t kill him in the primary election he will be down right toxic during the general election.
