All aboard the Jive Talk Express

My syndicated column today deconstructs Barack Obama’s pitiful performance yesterday. Try as he might, he simply cannot disown the un-disownable preacher of hate. That press conference yesterday renders the Philadelphia speech from March null and void. And anyone who fell for the Philadelphia speech (unfortunately, there were several on the right side of the aisle) should feel especially embarrassed today. Try not to be fooled again.

Speaking of the Philly speech, Jeff Emanuel notes that Obama is actually selling DVDs of the speech to raise money. Yep. At the same time he was attempting to finally disown Jeremiah Wright, he was peddling his speech refusing to disown him.

Huckster.

Barack Obama looked pale and wan at what he called his “big press conference” about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright on Tuesday afternoon. Numb. Chastened. Defeated. Extolled for his eloquence, Obama stuttered and stammered his way through the question-and-answer session. It appeared he was having an out-of-body experience.

Who knew that the greatest threat to his presidential campaign would come from the preacher who married him, baptized him, and prayed with him? Barack Obama should have known. That’s who. Take that judgment and shove it on a pretty campaign poster.

“Yes, we can”? Try “Yes, you should have.”

For the past 24 hours, Obama’s campaign too slowly grappled with how to handle the aftermath of Wright’s whirlwind tour of hatred this weekend — from Dallas, where he decried his “public crucifixion,” to Detroit, where he entertained NAACP bigwigs with impersonations of white people, mockeries of classical music and “white” marching bands, and lectures on racial brain theories, to the National Press Club, where he preened, strutted and head-wagged his way through an hour of bitter black liberation theologizing.

At first, Obama downplayed Wright’s public appearances. But Obama now tells us he had to wait 24 hours to convene a press conference to denounce Wright’s National Press Club speech because he “hadn’t seen it.” After all this time on the campaign trail, we’re back to the Obama-as-clueless-naif narrative again. When he finally did view the Washington speech, Obama explained, he was “shocked” and “outraged” and “saddened” because “the person I saw was not the person that I’d come to know over 20 years.”

What a load of pure unadulterated horse manure. Anyone with eyes can see that Wright’s performances are finely honed, time-tested acts. His anti-white, anti-American, “imperialist”-bashing shtick was not developed overnight or over the past few years. He’s been peddling AIDS conspiracies for decades. He’s been grievance-mongering about slavery for decades. He’s been flirting with the Nation of Islam, which provided security for his speeches, for decades. He’s been a shouting left-wing radical for decades.

Obama’s best-selling Audacity of Hope is named after the first sermon of Wright’s that he heard — decades ago — in which the pastor of racial resentment inveighed against an environment “where white folks’ greed runs a world in need, apartheid in one hemisphere, apathy in another hemisphere.” Yet, only now has Obama concluded that Wright’s sermons are “a bunch of rants that aren’t grounded in truth.”

Welcome to the Jive-Talk Express.

A reader of mine who is a clergyman e-mailed after Obama’s press conference: “As a pastor, I have this take: It is inconceivable that Obama had no knowledge of Wright’s views after 20 years as a member of that church. As a pastor, my heart-held, deepest beliefs and passions cannot be silenced. It is what I am. If I were given a microphone at the National Press Club, I would not speak on something that I had guardedly kept secret for most of my life. No, I would go to my main point, the center of my ministry, the core of my passion, to speak truth as I know it to be. How can Obama actually claim that this is news from his pastor? His mailman, butcher or plumber? No problem. His pastor? No way!”

It’s not Wright who has changed his loony tune.

It was just last year that Obama was telling the Chicago Tribune that Wright was his sounding board for truth: “What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day political advice. He’s much more of a sounding board for me to make sure that I am speaking as truthfully about what I believe as possible and that I’m not losing myself in some of the hype and hoopla and stress that’s involved in national politics.”

It was just this March, in his Philadelphia racial reconciliation speech, that Obama was urging us not to dismiss Wright as a “crank or a demagogue” and protesting that he could “no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”

Now, realizing how gravely his self-serving association with Wright has wounded his campaign, Obama himself has attempted to do both those things — and expects the American public to believe him when he weakly and belatedly asserts that “when I say I find [Wright’s] statements appalling, I mean it.”

As those of us with non-European brains might put it: You be trippin’, Barry.

The price is determined by supply (maxed out) and demand (decreasing as price increases). Reduce taxes and the price won’t change. All that will happen is oil company profits will increase.

Just your opinion, which many other posters here probably share. But I would think “the Maverick”, who has reached across the aisle so many times would have you libs salivating.

One more thing, I’m not a McCain fan, but we do share the same alma mater. And the Naval Academy does have a little thing called the Honor Concept, which states that a midshipman does not lie, cheat , or steal. That is something that is drilled into us from day one, and eventually becomes part of our DNA. While on active military service, officers are expected to tell the truth, about where they are, what their equipment status is, and what the condition of their men is. Life-and-death decisions are often made on what you say. Maybe McCain’s years in the Senate have twisted that concept around a bit, but I would venture to say that his years in the Senate were not as radically shaped as Obama’s years in the Reverend Wright’s church.

Here’s the logical problems with Obama:

Either (A) Obama really didn’t know that Rev. Wright was saying offensive stuff, OR (B) Obama did know.

If (A) is true, and he didn’t know, Obama is either (1) a flaming idiot for not being able to understand plain English, OR(2) seriously lying about how involved he was with this church.

If (B) is true, and he did know, then either (1) Obama agrees with Rev. Wright’s positions, OR (2) Obama disagrees with him.

If (B)(1) is true, then Obama is a pathological liar now, AND is psychologically unsuitable to be President for holding beliefs that are so diametrically opposed to the beliefs of most Americans.

If (B)(2) is true, then Obama has been shamelessly lying until now, AND repeatedly subjecting his young daughters to hateful speeches that he doesn’t believe are right.

Ok, so all the potential options pretty much have Obama as some combination of an idiot, a liar, and/or a nutcase. (and a lousy parent!)

Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, and say he’s not an idiot, and he hasn’t been lying for years and years about his dedication to his church.

Oops, wait, that means he brought his family to a church for 20+ years where he didn’t agree with the message. Why would he do that??? Could it be that he joined this church merely for the political connections he desperately needed in Chicago, and then once he got involved, was too chicken to risk angering them by leaving?

Ok, so then, logically, Obama is now an idiot, a liar, a nutcase, AND A CHICKEN.

Tell me again how this man became a serious Presidential candidate???

    lgm,
thanks for your excellent economic analysis. . .by your understanding of the demand curve, the gas tax is pre-emptively reducing the profits of the oil companies. So the government is punishing both the consumer (paying overall higher price) and the oil companies (reducing potential profits).

Liberal idiots should try to wrap their heads around this one. What if we had reduced consumption through greater fuel efficiency, reducing car travel, etc.? The government would get less gas tax money, right? Somehow, they would need to find a way to manage with less. Any argument against a gas tax holiday isn’t logical and can’t be based on “government needs”.

If there is a liberal idiot conception of EVIL PROFITS it should at least be profit margins, not overall profits.

PROFIT MARGINS OF EVIL BIG OIL VS. BENEVOLENT BIG MEDIA:
    BP 7.33%
    Exxon 11.23%
    Chevron 8.98%
    Shell 8.81%

    Time Warner 9.44%
    Disney 11.64%

Watching Obama trying to close the stable doors after the horse has fled reminded me of the scene from The Caine Mutiny, in which the defense attorney for the accused mutineer asks him point-blank:

“Are you a fool or a mutineer?
    There’s no third possibility.”

Same for Obama: Are you an imbecile, or a fraud? There’s no third possibility.

Imbecile: You spent 20 years around Wright and his minions, and only now noticed what he was saying or felt the need to dissociate yourself from him?

Fraud: You spent 20 years with Wright as your “spiritual adviser” - without raising any objection to what he’s been saying all that time - and actually believe that people are going to buy your “Saul on the road to Damascus” conversion away from him?

Obama is colliding head-on with two political axioms:

    Don’t expect to talk your way out of problems you behave yourself into;

    and

There are stupid Americans, but Americans are not stupid.

A majority of the electorate will not want an imbecile in the White House. There are too many of us still around who were alive when Jimmy Carter was president.

And we’ve already experienced and can still recall a pair of frauds from the 1990s. Don’t want to go back there, either.

Upshot: While it’s too early to say of Obama, “Stick a fork in him, he’s done” - the general election remains McCain’s to lose.

I know some liberals have mischaracterized McCain’s 100yrs statement. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, and still suggest he’s crazy. The Middle East isn’t Germany or Japan. The Middle East in the heart of the Islamic Jihadist movement, and it frigtens me that J. SIDNEY. M. thinks that we can just lolygag around there for decades like it’s the equivalent of Germany or Japan. A military presence there means perpetual war. I think the man is a hawk, irrational, and will make a disasterous president.

Good to see you can have a discussion, mistress! :)

While we agree that McCain would be horrible, i cant say the dems have anyone that would be better. both of them would leave there ASAP and leave a void there that our enemies would love to fill. It is a mistake, that we can ill afford, to just hand over the keys to the realm if (or when, in the dems’ case) we pick up and go.

To understand this though, requires understanding the enemy. You are correct about having “perpetual war”, but I believe you dont have it in the correct context. Those who actively seek our destruction will do anything to keep it in a perpetual state of combat. The only concern they have is the best way to slit our throats. Do you think they value life or peace, or anything else along those lines? Ask Maupin’s family (and may he find the rest he so richly deserves, my thoughts are with his family as well) about how much peace and love his captors talked about.

This whole war on terrorism and against jihad is perpetual, whether we like it and accept it, or not. I just don’t want to be someone caught napping when they come to my doorstep. This is not something that can be dealt with by discussion. It can’t be handled by treaties or sending another Jimmy Carter over there. It is not something that can be dealt with by sticking our heads in the sands, nor by tying the hands of the very military that is equipped to deal with them behind their back. As much as I dislike saying it, some people only respond to stimuli such as pain. Sometimes, in extreme cases such as our jihad loving counterparts, the only thing they understand is the same violence they unleash on others with seeming impunity, and i’m perfectly fine with having them obliterated utterly and completely. But ignoring them, running from them, or trying to barter with them will only escalate it from their end. So this war is, as i’ve said, perpetual, regardless. I would rather be vigilant, since that is the case.

    Just something to think about.

Actually, Sambo, “jive” is not a racist comment. Try looking it up. Better yet, here is the definition of “jive” for you, so you don’t have to put yourself out for it.

    Look closely at the:

    - transitive verb form for “to cajole of mislead“; and
    - adjective form for “Misleading; phony“.

Granted, “jive” is slang terminology but not “racist”. Now, had someone used “jive” as an adjective with the n-word, then you could scream racism or racist.

So, unless you know something about the etymology of “jive” that neither The American Heritage Dictionary nor I seem to know, it isn’t “racist”. Sorry.

Oh. And, I don’t tend to take any cues or lessons from misstressjustice.

His preteen daughter has run away and he hires the PI Peter Boyle to try to find her. He discovers her starring in a hardcore porn flick but is unable to track her down. So Jake starts looking for her himself and meets a young prostitute who helps him negotiate the seamy underworld of porn. He’s of the conservative Dutch Reformed church, she’s a street prostitute. They start talking with each other about life. He tells her some of the tenets of his church. Then the conversation goes something like this:

Prostitute: That sounds pretty crazy. It doesn’t make much sense.
Jake: Well it does if your in it. It makes sense from the inside.
Prostitute: Well, anything makes sense from the inside, when you’re in it.

That’s Obama’s problem. Trinity Church made sense when he was in it, everyone nodding their heads in agreement, because anything makes sense from the inside. But when he began to look at it from the outside, as other people see Wright’s interpretation of Cone’s black liberation theology, it’s just flat out kooky and racist. Then it’s like, oops. Now what do I do.

A fighting military presence in the Middle East in perpetuity is not the answer. The war on Terrorism needs to be fought with intelligence,(spies, assassination, blowin crap up)ect. Allowing our troops to fight a holy war in perpetuity on Middle Eastern soil will break our military, and devastate the economy. I’m not naive about the permanent threat of Jihadists, but staying until the war is “won”(still have not heard a good definition) and in perpetuity after will be a big mistake. A draft would have to be reinstituted, we’d be more reliant on China for resources/$$$, and countries like Russia and North Korea, and god knows who else would be able to move unabetted due to us being “tied up”.

When you write like this mistressjustice, you betray your liberal brethern ideology.

I couldn’t agree with you more on this point and a little bit of your view about how long we should be in Iraq.

We have an invasion happening right here on our southern border that is as important as the jihadis.

That’s scary, I agree with MJ nearly word for word on this paragraph.

I think were the battle for Iraq policy gets lost is when both sides dig in the trenches. If we could all agree on this much and work on a real solution to implement it I would vote for the person pushing to implement such a realistic plan. My problem with much of the left is they blantantly ignore or don’t care about terrorism and make their point known that they believe this (see lgm’s lunatic defense of the goose lake bombers on the other thread as just misguided angry college students… and the 9/11 truthers don’t help either)

That is too funny. Got to give it to Ali, he was the man when it came to talkin’ some smack!

You are typical of some on the right Drone. Pull out your cookie cutter talking points even when they don’t fit.

Umm. What would those points be?

I will be clear, Seige, initially, and unprovoked called me SCUM. Maybe that’s okay with you, but I obviously took exception and gave some insults of my own.

Never heard of being the better person? Most rational, normal people would laugh off that comment, ignore it, whatever. However, you chose not only to start attacking siege but to just keep piling it on. Gotta agree with soap on this one - you do seem bitter. But I won’t suggest you need a man - too many assumptions there and I wouldn’t want to offend you.

I’ll write in big crayon colors that you have no courage or honesty.

Really? Who’s the one who continues to throw out the personal insults and really doesn’t want to debate any of BHO’s socialist policies that he would so gladly implement given the chance. I welcome that debate.

How’s that for courage? Maybe this will work better for you: I recently faced a life-threatening illness and surgery. Scared me almost senseless. Fortunately, I have wonderful health insurance (I paid $600 co-pays on a bill of over $120,000)and could get the medical care I needed without having to wait months for it. I will fight tooth and nail any attempts by BHO, HRC, or any other idiot liberal/democrat that wants to institute universal/single payer/it’s all socialist medicine. Don’t try to take my affordable health care ($30 per month premiums) from me. That enough “courage” for you? Somebody willing to fight for what they believe in, rather than whoring themself out to defend scum? Suit you? Frankly I don’t care. I don’t need you to validate me as either a conservative or a person. My choices in a lot of areas of my life validate my conservatism just nicely, thank you, and my wife and children are all the validation I need as a person.

The only thing of substance that you’ve posted here is nothing more than a tired old rehash (albiet not too cleverly re-worded) of the “Bush lied, people died (and will continue to)” mantra. Until you care to engage in reasoned, thoughtful debate on issues of real substance (health care, social security, 2nd Amendment rights to name a few), then I’ll thank you to keep the personal insults and the condescending attitude to yourself.

    Otherwise, go suck eggs.

I find it interesting how liberals can talk about our military and our current missions, yet they haven’t served, been in the Middle East, or know anybody who has served. I find it curious that instead of confronting terror head on, we’ll just “pop out” of Iraq and let the place go to hell. I’m sorry, but you, like most of the American lazyboy, second-guessing brigade, aren’t military strategists or tacticians. However, I have some questions for you and other liberals:

    1) Why do you think you can speak on military matters (including Obummer) yet have no experience with such?

    2) Why do you either hate or resent the US so much?

    3) Why do you ignore that terrorists won’t go away just because you want them too?

    4) Where do you think our oil will come from? If you think we should be no longer dependent on foreign oil, then why can’t we drill in our own back yard?

    5) Do you and nyk think that whites should bow our heads, and meekly follow along while the black community demands “reparations,” “justice” and more “rights?”

    6) If you’re so “open” to other opinions and political viewpoints, then why do you and nyk continually misrepresent what other posters say?

I don’t know if you and other well-intentioned liberals get it that you do not speak for the military. You may like the whole armchair quarterback routine about what’s a “good” war and what’s not, but as a military spouse, I find it insulting and disheartening.

I find yours and nyk’s take on the Iraq War to be naive, half-hearted hyperbole. I’ve heard it all the last 8 years from liberals in and out of my family. If you think that leaving Iraq will be what turns the economy around or makes things all better, well I got an empty spot where the twin towers used to be to prove you wrong.

I don’t feel any kind of respect from either you or nyk. Yet, you bleat on about our same old “talking points” yet you present the same. Want to be authentic and different? Present something that isn’t a typical liberal talking point.
