Berkeley College Republicans apply for same protest privileges as Code Pink
This is good. I was hoping someone would step up and do it. The Berkeley College Republicans are applying to the city council for a protest permit that would confer the same privileges that Code Pink has received. Via the Daily Cal:
The Berkeley College Republicans are looking to get the same permit privileges that anti-war group Code Pink use to protest outside the Marine recruiting center in Downtown Berkeley.
Working with Councilmember Kriss Worthington, the group is asking for sound waiver permits and a parking spot reservation outside the center on Wednesdays from 12 to 4 p.m., the same time Code Pink protests outside the center, said Kimberly Wagner, activism chair for the Berkeley College Republicans.
“(Code Pink’s) claim is that they’re protecting free speech,” she said. “I kind of don’t feel they are, they are inhibiting the recruitment center in general. It’s important that they are not unopposed, that there are people willing to fight them. Even though it’s Berkeley, the liberal center of America, there will be people (opposed).”
Worthington is working to have the item appear on an agenda in May.
The CRs also are circulating a petition for a protected zone around the Marine recruiting center. Funny enough, the same libs who probably have no problem with speech-free zones around abortion clinics are balking at applying the idea to recruiting centers.
Worthington said what the petition called for was “unconstitutional” and that it would not be well-received by the City Council and members of the public.
“I think anywhere in Berkeley you try to create a one mile zone of prohibiting protest, you would get more people protesting on the ban on protesting than you ever get of the original cause,” he said.
Bubble zones for thee, but not for me, eh, Berkeley?

The liberal mentality would be fascinating if it weren’t so darn dangerous. How can the same people who scream diversity, freedom of this and that, tolerance, etc… Be the same group of people who try to stifle the freedoms of those with whom they disagree? Oh that’s right, it goes back to
Funny how little real free speech there actually is in the birthplace of the “Free Speech Movement.”
Only moonbats need apply.
How many Berkeley College Republicans are there, five or six? Knock em’ dead anyway!
When this all hit the fan a few months back, Worthington was the only one to reply to my email to the Council demanding an explanation. As I recall, she favored the parking stall for Code Pink, but not the sound permit. I could be wrong.
I hope someone will be at the council meeting next month with a camera. I really want to see how this all plays out.
Is the ACLU offering to help the College Republicans here?
I would be surprised if they refuse. After all, they’ll represent Illinois Nazis and everyone knows that Republicans are closet nazis…
There’s republicans in Berkeley?
I wonder how City Council will dance around the equal protection clause of the Constitution? Performance theater at its best.
Worthington is a he. And he was the lone dissenter in opposing the Code Pink permit: See here.
Typical Liberal Hypocrisy (TLH)
Thanks Michelle, great story.
Looking forward to the results of the permits — and the protests…Gotta love the Planet California.
Ah, thanks. I had Medea Benjamin on the brain (God help me) as I was posting. Yes, Worthington is a he.
If they get the permit and make fools of themselves as Code Pink has, will you criticize them as much as you criticized Code Pink? That’s a challenge to you.
As I have said many times, there is a silent majority in California that once organized will counter the wackos on the far left. Rather than continue the jabs at California & Berkeley, how about give some credit where credit is due?
This is a very important statement, because it highlights the fact that liberals only win they are allowed to proceed unopposed.
Best of luck and good wishes to the Berkley College Republicans!
Does anyone really expect that this will ever work? We are not talking about issues of equality here. These are Conservatives and Republicans we are talking about here, not anybody who could ever be equal to a Berkeley liberal!
Take it however you will …
#6, I thought the same thing, Republicans in Berkely? I wonder if they have to go to the store wearing full riot gear. Can’t be a very peaceful existence for them. Oh diversity…….
Oops! “…liberals only win when they are allowed to proceed unopposed.”
No. We will save it all for the likes of you.
I will be praying they protest upwind of Code Stink!
lgm – swoop-poop-squawk-leave
Categorically impossible.
I’d like to see the Repubs wear suits and ties…. what a contrast to the slimy looking code stink people.
lgm
If you call countering known communists, if you call standing proudly with the American flag making a fool out of yourself, you got a big leftist problem.
I have faced off against Code Pink, ANSWER, etc., and if anyone doesn’t know by now who the are, they need to drop their wanker and get a life.
Typical. Way to go, Berkeley CR’s. Keep taking baby steps…
Oddly enough there’s far more anti-war violence and “hate speech” than violence or hate speech perpetrated to stop abortion.
I don’t see these anti-war anti-”baby killer” people protesting against the baby killing abortions.
Their hypocritical position on “free speech” just proves that their real objective is to obstruct the recruitment center.
Keep fighting the good fight against these pinko wackos!
I have an idea for a group I would like to start. I need assistance on how to get this group started and draw national attention to see if any Americans would like to get on board and help out too.
I want to call it CPR (Citizens Protecting Recruiters). Where by citizens can sign up to voluntarily post outside Recruiting offices to report any criminal behavior that occurs.
Any ideas on how I can get this started would be great.
Dave
If you mean lgm that they will stand there with American flags with signs supporting our troops I think the public will make up their own minds who is deranged and who isn’t.
Yup. Absolutely. And I am sure that they will act in exactly the same manner – dressing up in costumes, splattering paint on private property, blocking traffic, harassing passers by, I’m sure it’s going to be exactly the same.
And if they don’t, then I expect a public apology from you. If they don’t make fools of themselves like the code pink protesters.
This is a challenge to you.
I love these young Republicans!
They are taking ACTION – they know that talk-talk-talking does nothing.
Great going guys.
I don’t see folks who support the military and the American Constitution running around in pink body suits riding unicycles looking like an afterbirth on wheels. Enough said.
ok, aj will play karnak for lgm on this one….
Holds envelope to forehead.
all will be covered without concern of them making fools of themselves.
Opens envelope, blows it apart reads contents.
Thread of College Republicans making true Americans proud.
back in you’re tree fool.
LGM,
Yet another chime by the daily troll!
You must be a very angry depressed person.
Sad.
Just when I get my monitor cleaned, you come along with this. I got to stop reading during lunch.:)
As for the Code Pink protestors, how’s that working out? Did you get the Marines to retreat yet?
By the way, it’s going to get mighty crowded in that parking space. Can’t wait to see that.
That’ll leave a mark!
Republicans in Berkely. Now, I bet that’s a minority group.
Odds are the majority of them also fit other minority categories, too: white, male, heterosexual.
A challenge?!
Okay. If the female College Republicans start running around bare chested, like Code Pink women have a propensity to do, I will condemn them, lgm. If they vandalize the recruiting station or other private or public property, I will condemn them. But, alas, I suspect they will hold themselves to a much higher standard than their Code Pink counterparts.
Challenge? Geez!
Yep, lgm woke up this mornin’ with a full diaper again. Somebody please change em’ and give em’ the bottle!
Well, gee, gosh, golly, darn! How DARE Republicans demand the same rights as looney, left-wing, liberals! Don’t they understand only looney, left-wing, liberals have rights in Beserkley!?
You are probably right.
How do you assume they will make fools of themselves? Last I checked, members of the College Republicans weren’t interuppting Senate hearings, stalking Nancy Pelosi, or engaging in outlandish moonbattery.
They are merely asking for the same free speech rights – presumably to support our troops – that the Berkeley City Council afforded Code Pink.
Ever heard of fair and equal protection under the law, lgm?
Or does that not apply to conservatives?
It will be interesting to see how the hypocritical City Council tries to wiggle out of this one, and wiggle they will. They aren’t for freedom of speech. All they care about is bashing the military.
Spo-con:
Full diaper…
To to funny!
The picture of the code pink gal, by Zombie, with her fingers pinched together looks to me like she is telling the guy how much gray matter she has. Do these people ever look at pictures of themselves? I wouldn’t be caught dead in public looking like they do.
L
The Berkeley College Republicans look like a pretty clean cut group of young men and women. They look a lot more presentable than any of the Code Pink folks I see in media coverage.
Their site says they are “one of the largest and most active student run organizations at UC Berkeley.”
There are a lot more conservative people attending the University of California than you might think. The student body is as diverse as any public university. Some graduates have even been known to post on this board, (wink).
“Born and rasied in Laramie, educated at Berkeley, a sure case for schizophrenia”
Never happen.
As others here have said, I will definitely criticize this group if they start vadalizing and engaging in some of the other inappropriate actions the personify Code Pink. However, I would be willing to bet that they will not earn our scorn as Code Pink has rightfully done.
Or, are you suggesting that the mere act of obtaining the permit is what makes Code Pink fools and the subject of our scorn? Because if that’s the case, you are blind or ignorant… or both. Clearly the members of Code Pink have repeatedly made fools of themselves and stepped over the lines of reasonable protest.
I waited a while to chime in here, because I wanted to see lgm’s response to the other commenters. How foolish of me to think he’d back up his ridiculous “challenge.”
Dave, a variation of your idea does exist in the 2008 Operation Recruiter Appreciation started by the Gathering of Eagles in 2007, and was very successful.
All Americans need to show the recruiters that we appreciate them and the job that they do. Individuals, cities, business and schools could all step up and become a Eagle on May 17th. Contact your state coordinator, and let our recruiters know how real Americans really feel.
Don’t let the Anti-American moonbats be the only voice in America.
Time to Eagle UP!
Go Bears!
Another Cal grad here. Like most conservatives I knew at Cal, instead protesting the issue of the week, beating ourselves in a drum circle,or rioting on Telegraph Ave., we were hidden away in the math, engineering, or science departments doing real work.
Gathering of Eagles are fantastic. My husband is a very proud retired military member and we go to all events for our military in our area. We Eagle UP!

As has been said on this blog before:
Scratch a liberal and you’ll find a Fascist underneath.
I don’t think they’ll get their permit but I do know that unlike the anti-war, anti-American, anti-military clowns the troll worships they will conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Something the stinkos never do.

Thanks for the information it’s good to see that the Americans that really care about this country are doing something.
I will contact them to see what I can do to help and inquire as to how I may be able to start my own organization.
Thanks,
PLEASE, someone please explain to me why the Code Pink protesters who chained themselves to the recruitment office door and apparently assaulted a prospective recruit were not prosecuted under the following statute:
“Whoever, when the United States is at war, … willfully obstructs the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States, to the injury of the service or the United States, or attempts to do so— Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.” 18 USC 2388(a), available at, http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00002388—-000-.html.

Making poop jokes gets a laugh every time!
Do you think John McCain-who has NO problem touting his military service-will actually come out for the Marines?
Or does he have to get permission from his liberal friends?
By the way
I’m appalled act the virtual lack of support the Marine recruiters at Berkeley have had from the Republican Party…Not even “W” as said a word-but he has no problem defending himself with respect to the Iraq War.
A question to ponder isn’t it?
Good question, love2rumba. I’m sure that McCain is asking permission from Nancy Pelosi as we speak.
Oh, it’s going to be great, just great when McCain comes up to the podium at the Republican convention, snaps a salute at the crowd and says “REPORTING FOR DUTY!!”
Don’t you think? I think so.
Given you propensity to drop by and make fallacious and ambiguous comments and then jet away, without coming back to answer critics of your viewpoints, lgm, you leave folks few other options than to have some fun with your antics.
What creedence does a “challenge” from you hold in such circumstances?
Great story! I hope they get those permits…
I remember eons ago when I was going on my incoming student orientation campus tour at Cal, the chirpy little girl (I was in my 30s) who led the tour lamemted the BCR–she said she’d come to Cal because it was so liberal, and was disappointed to find out the BCR is the biggest club on campus. I chortled with glee.
Go BCR.
Someone please explain to me why the Code Pink protesters who chained themselves to the recruitment office door and apparently assaulted a prospective recruit were not prosecuted under the following statute:
Whoever, when the United States is at war, … willfully obstructs the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States, to the injury of the service or the United States, or attempts to do so— Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both. 18 USC 2388(a), available at, http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00002388—-000-.html.
Ayup.
I guess it makes sense that CR is the largest organization there. The school is pretty much a liberal playground, so all of the libs are spread out between various organizations. Plus, the Republicans probably have to band together if they want to engage in intelligent conversation without getting, um… paint flung at them.
Recall the quote from Will Durant:
“A great civilization is not destroyed from without until it is destroyed from within.”
There are people in this country who don’t like what they see: They hate capitalism, they hate Western civilization, they hate Judeo-Christian morality, they hate American power and and they hate America’s sense of exceptionalism.
Most of these people are parlor pinks – they’ll grouse, but that’s about it. But there are others more inclined to tear down what they don’t like before they contemplate building a new order in their own image.
Give them some George Soros money, some like-minded politicians and some ACLU and NLG lawyers, and they can do some real damage over time to the social fabric holding society together:
- They use political correctness, “diversity” and “multiculturalism” to chill speech and create a new class of “thought crimes.”
- They redefine the First Amendment to read “Freedom from religion” instead of Freedom of religion, then work relentlessly to drive Christianity out of the public sphere.
- They seek to destroy traditional institutions like monogamous heterosexual marriage by making a mockery of it with “homosexual marriage;” they also attack traditional organizations like the Boy Scouts with the same zeal as if they were hunting down the Hitler Youth.
- They seek to supplant the legislative process via judicial fiat.
The list goes on, but the point is that by weakening or removing its foundational supports one by one, eventually you can cause any structure – including what we understand as “American society” – to eventually collapse.
This is the agenda of the Berkeley-style left: they’re like intelligent termites, hoping that by the time you realize the full extent of the damage they’ve done, it’ll be too late to do anything other than condemn the house.
It’s also what Huey Long was talking about when he said that if Fascism ever comes to America, it’ll call itself “anti-Fascism.”
If the counsel says no, they open themselves up for prosecution and dismissal.
please please please deny the permit..
Council sorry.
Dave, a web site should be your first step. Try http://www.godaddy.com for an affordable site. I’d join, but here in Texas we revere our recruiters and military.
Studying Engineering and Architecture at Cal, I was required to take classes outside of my major (I guess to expand my horizons). Hence I found myself in a Sociology class with a liberal and well known Professor (Todd Gitlin).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Gitlin
The class was full of radical feminists and I was probably lucky I didn’t get tarred and feathered for my viewpoints. Actually, I held my own and got some keen insight into the minds of the beastettes.
Two of the most useful classes I took at Cal: Rhetoric and Judo.
Thank you, BCR. Good luck.
When my man comes back from war, I’m leaving Cali for good. And, I’m a seventh generation native.
Southpaw – I followed the link on your professor and scanned the info. Couldn’t help but notice this quote:
So why are we not allowed to question the patriotism of the aging hippies?
Can anyone tell me what would be wrong with the following:
I want to make a razor blade suit.
Helmet too.
All covered in razor blades with their sharp edges sticking out.
A human walking cactus.
I want to do this to deter any possible assault on my person.
I am a peaceful person and abhor violence.
Now I will peacefully walk into the Marine office.
If you assault me; touch my person in any way; I will be defended.
I suggest that pushing me around as these protesters seem to want to do to others may not be so easy..
I really wish Code Pinko’s had chosen a different color…I look really GOOD in shades of pink, and now I am worried about wearing it and being thought one of them. Not fair! Make them wear khaki instead- I look awful in that color.
JoAnn, maybe you’d be interested in this Taking Back The Pink shirt.
the BCR’s have every right to protest..good for them
tuffy,
When I get back from Iraq, I’m leaving Chicago/Illinois for good too.
Great minds think alike.
Unfortunately in Bezerkly – it’s only free speech if you agree with the moonbats!
Something tells me that the city council might have to study the 14th Amendment. There’s something in it about equal protection of the laws.
Code Pink…(snort) buncha stinky fanny plugs.
Childish, perhaps…but boy, soooo true.
Give’em Heck Berkeley Repubs.
(I didnt realize there were any at the college!!!!!
Of course they will not let the Republicans have any of the rights of protest that code pinko’s have. Republicans lack a champion, that is NO one of importance will stand with them. If the Berkley Republicans do any thing other than politely ask, then quietly go away when refused, expect prominent Republicans to step forward to denounce them. That is the way it is.
