Illegal immigration activists and anti-war activists will lead the parades today, but May Day attracts all grievance-mongers.
Here’s another all-purpose, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink “list of demands” (I feel like I’m at Oberlin again) from the “National Immigrant Solidarity Network:”
On May Day 2008, National Immigrant Solidarity Network is calling for a multi-ethnic, decentralized, multi-topic and multi-tactic national day of mobilization to support immigrant workers rights.
1. No to anti-immigrant legislation, and the criminalization of the immigrant communities.
2. No to militarization of the border.
3. No to the immigrant detention and deportation.
4. No to the guest worker program.
5. No to employer sanction and “no match” letters.
6. Yes to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
7. Yes to speedy family reunification.
8. Yes to civil rights and humane immigration law.
9. Yes to labor rights and living wages for all workers.
10. Yes to the education and LGBT immigrant legislation.We acknowledges that there’ll be multiple call to actions from across the country to organize May Day 2008, and each coalition will present their sets of demands. We should respects each other organizing and encourage and supports everyone’s issues:
1) Multi-ethnic, Decentralized and Multi-topic mobilization: while everyone will pledge to support immigrant workers rights at May Day 2007, local groups can choose to includes any other topics for their mobilizations: civil rights, anti-war, Katrina, labor rights, health care…., etc.
2) Decentralized Multi-Tactic May Day organizing: We will encourage everyone to organize their actions at May Day, but will let local groups to decide what they want to do at the day: march, boycott, strike, lunch action, vigil, community event, conference or congressional lobby day, etc.Understanding the connections between our individual conditions of life and the lives of people everywhere in the word allows us to come together and organize across all borders. WE NEED to link the connections between: wars in Africa, south America, Asia, Iraq, Palestine & Korea with sweatshops in Asia as well as in Los Angeles, New York; international arm sales and WTO, FTAA, NAFTA & CAFTA with AIDS, hunger, child labors and child solider; multinational corporations and economic exploitation with racism and poverty at home–then we can win the struggle.Let’s all come together, on May Day 2008, to build a new immigrant rights and civil rights movements!
Their calendar includes the “Festival of Tolerance and Unity” in Aurora, CO; a nationwide call to walk out of school to protest standardized testing; and a protest by longshoremen in San Francisco.
Good luck to the law enforcement officers across the country–especially in L.A.–who will have to contend with the attention-craving, law-ignoring ruffians and thugs turning out today for the annual p.c. powwow. They’ll need it.

Update 9:30am Eastern (hat tip – reader William Amos): I mentioned the longshoremen’s protest in the SF Bay Area. Looks like a shutdown of ports is expected all along the West Coast. Via KING5 TV in Seattle:
May Day rallies are expected to draw thousands of protestors Thursday, and on the Seattle waterfront, longshoremen may join in.
KING 5 got late word Wednesday that longshoremen up and down the West Coast may not show up for work Thursday to protest the Iraq War.
So far, the local longshoremen’s union has declined to comment about a possible walkout. In fact, a union arbitrator has warned them that such a walkout violates union contract and is illegal, but Thursday is May Day when workers traditionally celebrate the labor movement.
Three separate marches are scheduled for Thursday which could cause major traffic delays – two during the noon hour, and the biggest one is expected to shut down traffic in downtown Seattle for almost 2 hours during the evening commute.
Starting at 4 p.m., it runs from Judkins Park on the north side of I-90 and makes its way down 4th Avenue to the Seattle Center, ending at about 6:30 p.m. Metro warned bus riders to prepare for a major disruption.
An arbitrator has ordered the union that represents dockworkers at West Coast ports to tell members they must report to work on Thursday and not take the day off to protest U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. A wide enough walkout could cause a slowdown at the West Coast ports – the nation’s major gateway for cargo from the Far East.
Arbitrator John Kagel issued his decision Wednesday after holding a hearing by phone with the employers’ group, the Pacific Maritime Association, and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, according to a document outlining the ruling. The union previously asked employers to clear the way for members to skip out on the day shift to protest the war, but employers refused the request and were backed by the arbitrator last week. Despite that decision, word continued to spread on the Internet of a May 1 walkout by longshore workers and details of protests, including a march in San Francisco.

Update 8:30 Pacific, by See-Dubya: More about that port shutdown…the longshoremen’s union leadership was getting cold feet about shutting down the ports. ILWU officers weren’t going to bless work stoppage to protest the war:
ILWU executives had initially given their blessing to an eight-hour work stoppage during the busy day shift, which was suggested two months ago during a union caucus in San Francisco….
The union withdrew its support shortly after the Pacific Maritime Association denied the union’s request for the walkout. An arbitrator ruled last week that the union had to inform its members about the change in plans.
As a result, any work stoppage held Thursday will be initiated by the union’s rank-and-file members, not by union executives, according to Merrilees.
“In light of those developments, we hope that May 1 will come and go without disruption,” said Steve Getzug, a spokesman for the PMA, which represents the West Coast’s shippers.
Hey, don’t blame us, the union executives say. Blame… Cynthia McKinney!

Update 1:50pm Eastern. Things are heating up in Chicago. The Trib estimates about 2,000 have shown up to demand non-enforcement of our immigration laws. Many students are playing hookie to attend:
“We want to change the immigration laws. We have to support our parents,” he added. Marlene Rivera, 15, a Kelly High School freshman, boarded buses along with about 200 other students at the school.
She and others from a school club called Latinos United spent the last month preparing for the march. Standing with three friends who held Mexican flags, she said they wanted elected officials as well as the presidential candidates to know that youth supports changing immigration law.
“We want to help out and let them know that it’s just not the grown-ups, but young people too,” she said.
Elizabeth Quiroz, 14, another Kelly freshman, said many of her classmates have been born in the U.S. to undocumented parents and live with the fear their parents may be deported at any time.
“If parents get sent back to Mexico, then the kids are going to be on their own,” she said.

TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) with the spoken module should be required for anyone who wishes to stay long-term in the USA.
However as for amnesty I say NO!
Let any illegal alien who wants to live, study and work in the USA go home , go to the US Consulate or Embassy and apply for a visa like everyone else.
Those who can pass a GED and TOEFL get priority.
Those who have criminal records in the USA (including DUI and major motor vehicle offenses),
illiterates,
those who are positive for HIV, hepatitis, TB , illegal drugs or heavy alcohol abuse, diabetics, or other major unhealthiness should never be eligible for any sort of entry into the USA.
As far as military goes, we’d be better off allowing only natural born citizens who have no other loyalties except to the United States into our armed forces.
The only amnesty I’d want to see is for those who employed illegals conditioned on them paying all back taxes for any illegals they had off the books.

In Denver, we will find out today. It is snowing and cold. Although, sombreros are as good at keeping snow off the head as they are with sun. Ay, carumba!
We had something similar to that two years ago, a house almost across the street from ours. We started seeing about 4 vans at this house. On the weekends, there were several cars parked all along the street. Only men going inside. Right around Christmas, the police raided the home. The house was an illegal prostitution ring. I was shocked to learn there were women at that house as I never saw any. Turns out, the women were brought up from Mexico in those vans and were being held in the converted garage.
My neighborhood is not a slum area either; however, it is slowly turning into one.
The major problem in our subdivision is that many years ago, we let the Homeowner’s Assoc. lapse and now there’s no way anyone is going to be interested in reviving it.

I’d agree with the “ritual” concept, although my comparison isn’t so much with Celts and Druids as much as with the original Star Trek episode, “The Return of the Archons” – i.e., one day every year, for no apparent reason, the locals go ape in an orgy of violence and destruction known as the “Festival.”
In fact, if I heard any of the May Day “protesters” shouting, “Festival! Festival!!” while blocking gates and provoking the police, it wouldn’t surprise me at all.

I would modify that to say, only children born to at least 1 American citizen parent is a citizen of the US. Many a mexican mom walks across the border, legally, when it is time to deliver so the the little American is eligible for welfare. It does not stop there. My wife and I (she is from Europe) met a lady from Albania on flight to Europe back in the 90’s. She gleefully told us how she got a visitor’s visa to come to the US in the 8th month of her pregnancy so the baby would be an American citizen. Talk about abuse. Why she did it then returned is beyond me (we did not ask). I suspect to collect welfare or maybe to sponsor her or someone else. Sponsorhip is worth a lot of $. In any case, it was blatant abuse of our systems.

Unfortunately, I think the cow is way out of the barn on the immigration issue. It seems to me that the demographics (birth rates, population patterns, etc.) underlying the various issues at hand have passed the tipping point. I think we’re mostly whistling past the graveyard on this one.

Minutes ago, I spoke with Clarence Thomas of the ILWU executive board. “The rank and file action against the war is indeed happening right now”, he said. And today the workers will write history.
In an attempt to head this off last night the PMA went to court, but the judge refused to take any action, until there is concrete action by the union in violation of their contract. This is a rank and file action by union members who are united by their opposition to the war, and the disagree with the decision of the arbitrator who has dis-allowed the choice of May Day, by the ILWU, as a “day for union business” for workers at all 29 ports on the west coast. A “day for union business” is allowed by their contract. Their original intent was to use this day as their official protest, but official or not, the protest is on.
Thomas affirmed that this is not to be confused with the negotiations between the union and their employers. The hard-won contract of 6 years ago is set to expire, and talks are going well. But on the issue of taking a day off for union business, the rank and file of Local 10 is going their own way and will close down the ports in protest of the ongoing wars of the Bush administration. This may be the beginning of a record setting anti-war action, since the vast majority of supplies and munitions for our current wars are shipped from the 29 ports on the West Coast, in california, Oregon, and Washington. All 29 will close today.

If our esteemed elected officials actually understood what is in the Constitution that they swore to uphold and defend we could end a lot of problems that keep coming up. However with the libs constantly trying to monopolize “power” in office even understanding it would not make a difference. All of the “anchor” babies that keep illegals in the country can stay united with the family and go back with the family when they return to where they came from. It would be better for the child as the child is being brought up with the values of the country that the illegals entered the United States from, illegally. What part of illegal is hard to understand?

Got on a tangent. That is the wording for the 14th ammendment, lgm et al, and it clearly states that you need to be born subject to the jurisdiction of the united states. If you are here illegally and are not following the laws of the land and do not subject yourself to the jurisdiction of the United States you are not a citizen. With the states and the courts not subjecting the illegals to US law it only reinforces what the founding fathers wanted for our great country.
All my fellow “right-wingers” in Southern California are forgetting the positive side of these marches: with all the illegals in downtown L.A. for the protests, they are not clogging the freeways. The commute to work (for those of us who do not work downtown) was great today. Can’t they march every day? Might serve a good dual purpose – make the legal electorate angry while clearing the roads of uninsured drivers and old, nearly broken-down vehicles.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Anne Hobbs was angry. The head of the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission had just learned of a Hispanic couple who said their landlord asked for their driver’s licenses — but didn’t ask the same of non-Hispanic tenants.
Hobbs said it sounded like the couple were “treated differently than everybody else because of national origin,” and sent the case to the state’s top prosecutor, hoping he would sue on their behalf under fair housing laws.

As a college student i have a unique perspective on this. MY classes are M/W/F but yesterday one of the moonbat professors I have (who was supposed to be teaching WWI) went on a rant about Iraq/Immigration/Gas Prices, etc. He encourages student participation. So I participated and did my best to refute his moonbat claims. After a short argument he said “I know your a smart person but all that is is propaganda by the right. We need new leadership, ours is no better than Hither. We need workers rights because it is wrong to treat undocumented workers like we do…” With that myself and several others walked out of his class. Thankfully I only have tree classes left.
Watch this SF Bay Area TV news story of what open borders has produced: anarchy in the workplace, $4 per hour serf wages, unsafe conditions, etc., in TWENTY manufacturing sites around the Bay Area.

An early morning fundraising breakfast for a nonprofit literacy group that does a lot of very good work in Adult Basic Ed., ESL, and Citizenship classes.
I am sitting at a table with some typical, urban, white, self-aggrandizing liberals.
An ESL student from Ethiopia stands up, in front of approximately 175 people, and proceeds to demonstrate her hard-earned English skills in a speech. She thanks the literacy organization, her tutors, and lastly, she thanks America, and all Americans.
She repeats this a few times at the end of lovely and adorable speech. “Thank you to America and all Americans. Without America I would never be where I am today. Ever. I appreciate America and all Americans!!!!!!” (Big, huge smile.)
The applause was tepid and polite…and a woman at my table sneered, “Well, I certainly don’t appreciate all Americans,” with a slightly disgusted look on her face.
When the obligatory George Bush joke made its way into the morning, the applause was thunderous, the smiles were large and gracious, and the eyes were twinkling.
So, this brings me to my plan. Let’s deport all of the unappreciative, spoiled, ungrateful, snobby, typical, white liberals, and let in (amending this to say: LEGALLY let in) the people who love this country, and work hard to be successful – realizing how wonderful and amazing this place, and its people truly are.
Yet again, I was privy to the shallowness of liberal ideals when I saw that they couldn’t even warmly celebrate this woman’s triumphs, just because she loves this country.

Most Americans want the government to stop illegal entry into the country before discussing what to do about the estimated 12 million people already living in the U.S. illegally, according to a poll released Friday by a conservative grassroots organization.
The findings are “exactly contradictory to what the president said,” according to Steve Elliott, president of Grassfire.org. “He insisted that we have to have a comprehensive solution that would cover border security and amnesty and guest worker programs.”
The poll of more than 1,400 Americans conducted Aug. 1-3 found that 73 percent of respondents view the illegal immigration situation as a “serious problem,” and 81 percent want the government to secure the borders before deciding what to do about illegal aliens already in the U.S.
Similarly, a May 2006 Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll found that 86 percent of Americans view illegal immigration as either “very serious” or “somewhat serious.”
Grassfire.org identifies itself as a “conservative, pro-family and pro-faith” organization of “hundreds of thousands of citizens.” The group encourages its members to join online petitions to “make a difference in our nation.”
Elliott told Cybercast News Service that his group “support[s] legal immigration and, like most Americans, we want the borders secured and we don’t support [President Bush's] amnesty plan.”
Elliott said Americans view illegal immigration as a serious problem “because of the terrorist threat, the security threat to our country.” He accused supporters of illegal immigration of ignoring that threat.
As Cybercast News Service previously reported, illegal aliens of Middle Eastern descent have been able to blend into Mexican culture and pass into the United States while pretending to be Mexican.
“Americans recognize that porous borders are a threat to our national security, and they want that solved as a top national security priority,” Elliott said.
But Laura Reiff, co-chair of the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, believes the national security risk from illegal immigration is minimal.
“The vast majority of the undocumented here are from CAFTA/NAFTA (Central and North American Free Trade Agreement) countries, mostly Mexico. I would say one in a million has any connection whatsoever to terrorism, if even that,” she told Cybercast News Service.
“But,” Reiff added, “we do need to find out who’s here, who is amongst us, and that is the argument we use in the national security area for developing a program for finding out who the undocumented are.”
“Everyone can agree,” she added, that there is a serious problem from illegal immigration. But, Reiff argued, the only way to fix the problem is for the government to offer an easier way to enter the country legally simultaneous to any crackdown on illegal entry.
“You’re deluding yourself to say that you’re going to fix the problem by securing the border, because the border will never be secured,” Reiff said. “The only way to fix the problem of undocumented coming into this country and with the current undocumented population is to do everything at the same time … in one comprehensive bill.”
The Grassfire.org poll did not ask respondents how they would deal with illegal aliens after securing the border, but a June 12 NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that 50 percent of Americans favor a plan similar to the Senate bill that would build a 370-mile fence along the border with Mexico and grant amnesty to illegal aliens who have been in the United States for more than two years.
In the NBC poll, one third of respondents favored the House plan, which calls for a 700-mile fence along the Mexican border and would deport aliens who are already in the United States illegally.

Yesterday I purchased three $10 starbucks cards. I went to the local Marine Recruiter office and was met by a young SGT. I handed him one of the cards and told him it was a small token of thanks for his service. I asked him how many people worked in the office (knowing that three usually work there) he said three so I produced the other two gift cards and handed them to him. I have never seen such a broad smile on a Marine. I urge others to show thanks and respect in a similar fashion.

Not true. The kids should remain with their parents… in a country where they are all legal citizens. Parents are supposed to take care of their children, not leave the country without them or use them as a means to subvert the system.

These people make me grumpy. That’s me saying it politely.
I’ve seen a couple comments here and there about how the majority of Americans are against illegal immigration,and against all the “demands” these animals are spewing in the streets these days, but honestly, apart from blogs like this one, I think it is true. Most Americans support illegal immigration and the rest of it. Not actively, but by inaction. Sure, voters have voted down given them drivers licenses and all that. But that is like stopping surges here and there in the slow creeping invasion taking place. Most Americans are content to just say “oh, well the leaders of those protests have freedom of speech and are legal, so they have a right to vocalize their issues”, or “well, it’s not affecting me”. Most Americans are to obsessed with making sure they don’t miss the latest episode of whatever tripe is on the tube along with a good dose of the evening “news”.
The closest we ever came to the kind of response needed was in the days just after 9/11. And I don’t mean the pathetic morons in the government pretending to spontaneously get together and sing God Bless America.
This war is not just between the Citizens and the invaders, it is the Citizens against the government that is assisting the invaders in the name of getting more votes.
We have allowed ourselves to be cornered, because oh-my-garsh do we need to get that new SUV, or that $800 BBQ that we’ll use twice. Obsession with the self has people sitting on their butts watching the TV instead of out where they should be, in the streets in numbers 20 or 30times that of these Pro-Illegal Immigration gatherings.
I suspect that most of you on this blog, as well as a few others I read, are actively working to save this country, but until the majority of Americans get off their fat lazy ***es and get in protests of their own, this once great nation is going to continue to tailspin into destruction and our troops in Iraq will have nothing to come home to, if they can even get here.
The “majority of Americans” deserve what is coming.

-We allow lawyers to sue companies for not labeling hot coffee as “hot”
-We allow anti-American people within our borders to constantly attack and erode our constitution.

I’ve actually seen a May Day parade in Madrid, Spain and you would think that these people had it really bad. For some it’s an official holiday against capitalism. As an American student in the late 1990’s I could not comprehend what I was seeing.
Just picture it: Spaniards in blue jumpsuits (uniforms that folks like painters wear in the city) marching, waving flags, some looking angry, others smiling, most protesting, some demanding their rights.
Then again this happened when the Conservative prime minister (before socialism took hold again) was trying to reform a lot of the socialist programs that were created during the dicator Franco’s time.
I wondered to myself: what would these people actually do with themselves if their government didn’t practice capitalism or local businesses didn’t create jobs?
It would seem that the May Day “celebrations” haven’t lost their relevance. Too bad a lot of these participants are protesting on behalf of the many illegals who take American jobs, undercut American wages, and are paid slave wages by some greedy American companies who aren’t interested in the American Dream anymore.

and you’re right…we have heard all of those demands before. Too many times, by my count. The majority (referenced above) are sick and tired of people who don’t belong here, who have abused and broken our laws, and have the audacity to DEMAND we change for them when this is OUR home and land. You know full well how Mexico treats and handle illegals, do you not? What’s good for the goose, as the saying goes.
And just to put this in perspective…IF there are 13 Million illegals, and we have a population of say, over 300 million people…doesnt that make THEM the minority to begin with? Just saying.
I dont consider having a fence along our border as “militarizing” unless there are guns mounted on it. We put fences around our yards to keep others out, why should our border be any different?
It boils down to the following of our laws. Either you’re obeying the law, or you’re not. These illegals marching and demanding we change the law, so they arent breaking it anymore, goes against the very spirit of the laws that were created for this very purpose.
To support them is to support lawlessness, laziness, illegal behavior, and the breaking down of our society and way of life in general. This behavior cannot go unchallenged, and cannot go unpunished.
