What does matter, however, is the fact that they abused our illogical special tolerance for Muslim customs to conceal their identities. A guy in black clothes wearing a ski mask will immediately draw attention, but when they disguised as Muslim women they effectively made themselves immune to questions about their attire. To do so would be “insensitive” to Muslims. Societal norms have evolved for a reason. A person with no sinister intentions rarely has a reason to hide his or her face, thus society views people in disguise with legitimate suspicion. We’ve allowed sensitivity to once again overrule common sense.

Some points should be made:

The author of the story, Kitty Caparella, is apparently getting her firearms info from Sarah Brady.

1)The SKS is not and never was by any definition an “assault rifle”; it was a stop-gap adopted briefly by Soviet forces, actually obsolete by the time it went into production, which bridged the gap between old-fashioned bolt-action rifles and the AK-47, which is a real assault rifle. The Soviets did build millions for use by satellite countries, and China built many millions more. The gun grabbers and MSM have successfully corrupted the term “assault rifle” to include semi-automatic rifles that are similar in appearance to assault rifles, but assault rifles by definition are select-fire and can fire fully automatically like a machine gun, or semi-automatically like any number of handguns, shotguns, and rifles. But even by the corrupted definition favored by Sarah Brady and the MSM the SKS is not an assault rifle. It does not have a high capacity removable magazine, it does not have a pistol grip, flash hider, etc; the only thing it does have that would fall on the list of “banned” features is the bayonet (very useful for those urban bayonet charges).

2) The SKS is not a “high-powered” rifle. It is a “medium-powered” rifle because it fires the relatively anemic 7.62×39 cartridge, and as at least one commenter noted above, the old .30-30 Winchester lever-action cowboy rifle cartridge has similar ballistics. In fact, assault rifles by definition DO NOT fire “high-power” cartridges; one of the advantages of real assault rifles is that they DO NOT fire high-power ammunition, making them more controllable in automatic fire mode, and allowing soldiers to carry more rounds of the smaller, lighter cartridges.

3) The SKS was never “banned”, nor were any other assault rifles, or the “look-alike” assault rifles subject to the so-called assault weapons legislation. Only importation was banned; there was never any shortage of these rifles on the legal firearms market.

It is absolutely disgraceful that this ignoramus is prostituting the murder of a police officer to pimp a bullshit anti-gun political agenda.

This is another case of journalists calling every weapon they see an assault weapon when they wouldn’t know one if they tripped over one.
