With Barack Obama on the verge of sewing up the Democrat presidential nomination, my syndicated column this morning looks at his biggest general election liability: The Missus. I’ll be on Fox and Friends this morning at around 7:15am to talk primary results.

Are you ready for hope and change? Barack Obama better hope his bitter half has a change of attitude if she expects to assume the title of first lady in November. She’s been likened to John F. Kennedy’s wife, what with her chic suits and pearls and perfectly coiffed helmet hair. But when she opens her mouth, Michelle O. is less Jackie O. and more Wendy W. — as in Wendy Whiner, the constantly kvetching Saturday Night Live character from the early 1980s.
When last our worldviews collided, back in February, the other Michelle was expounding on her lack of pride in America. I gave her myriad reasons to cheer up — from America’s role in the fall of communism and our unparalleled generosity to our nation’s superior economic system, cultural resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and ingenuity. But since then, Mrs. Obama has dug in her $500 Jimmy Choo heels and solidified her role in the 2008 presidential campaign as Queen of the Grievance-Mongers.
In one of her few (unintentionally) funny moments during a recent sit-down with comedian Stephen Colbert, Mrs. Obama claimed, “Barack and I tend to look at the positives.” That’s a side-splitter. As National Review’s Yuval Levin put it, Michelle Obama is “America’s unhappiest millionaire.” And she has the audacity to extrapolate her misery and her husband’s alleged victimization to the “vast majority of Americans.”
In South Carolina, she called America “just downright mean” and bemoaned “a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day.” And in case you hadn’t heard enough of her carping about how hard it is for a seven-figure-earning family to pay for ballet lessons and piano lessons and pay off college loans, Mrs. Oh-Woe-Is-Me was at it again on the campaign trail in Indiana and North Carolina before Tuesday’s primary.
On the stump, she warmed up (or rather, berated) supporters by complaining about how her husband is an underdog even after he keeps winning primary and caucus after primary and caucus. With a scowl etched on her face, she bellyached that “the bar is constantly changing for this man.” Call the waambulance, stat.
Barack Obama, the missus explains, is Everyman who has ever been put down by The Man. And “understand this” (a condescending verbal tic shared by both Obamas): Mrs. Obama is here to make sure you feel their pain. Which is really your pain. Because the hardships of a privileged Ivy League couple are “exactly” the same as the travails of miners or service workers or small-business owners: “So the bar has been shifting and moving in this race,” she grumbles, “but the irony is, the sad irony is, that’s exactly what is happening to most Americans in this country.”
Don’t tell Michelle about the Great Depression or the Carter Malaise. “Folks are struggling like never before,” she seethes.
Well, yes, gas prices are up. Some food prices are rising. And borrowers who bought more housing than they could afford are underwater. But “struggling like never before”? Didn’t they teach her about Hoovervilles and stagflation?
In Mrs. Obama, the fear-mongering pot meets the angst-stirring kettle: “Fear,” she froths, “creates this veil of impossibility and it is hanging over all of our heads.”
But what Mrs. Obama lacks in pride for her country and its promise she more than makes up for with bottomless pride for her husband. Her standard campaign speeches include at least a dozen references to how “proud” she is of him. And of herself. And of everyone who has overcome The Man and pierced the “veil of impossibility” to get to the polls and vote Obama. An online MSNBC report on a joint appearance by the Obamas on The Today Show in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright debacle included this tellingly narcissistic passage:
[Mrs. Obama]: “‘I’m so proud of how he has maintained his dignity, his cool, his honor.’
“Obama gently tried to interrupt, admitting to being embarrassed by the praise.
“‘But I am proud of you,” she said.
“I know,” he replied.
We all know. So get over yourself already, haughty spirit. Pride doesn’t photograph well. And bitterness leaves frown lines. Which means Botox bills. Which “struggling folks” like you and your husband simply cannot afford.
Try smiling for once. It’s cheaper.

I missed that completely. Absolutely that’s what it is about. I think I lost my train of thought in my post. I hope I answered FirstSkirt’s question.
FirstSkirt, most liberals want desperately to soothe their consciences by voting for a black man. Obama has ZERO track record. Obama has ZERO legislative successes. Obama has ZERO experience as any sort of executive.
It’s clear as day to me. Blacks “relate” to him, like you and I would relate to someone from our home town or clan. (with a C). I have a couple black friends who want Obama. One is a Berkeley grad U-CAL 1981. He is professional and a great guy. He used to be a Rodhamite. Now he cannont stand Rodham. I understand why. She stands in the way of “his guy”. The other black buddy is a high school grad who grew up in the hood of a major city. He has NO CLUE
FirstSkirt: I totally agree with you. It is very frustrating. I remember when my friends were voting for Doug Wilder for governor of VA. Pro abortion, etc. I just couldn’t get how, as Christians, they could vote for such a person. They really do have blinders on when it comes to race. Yet, in my experience, the most prejudiced people I ever met in my life were black people in Washington, DC. And I’m not kidding. I could tell you stories. One of the worst things was during the Million Man March when thousands were in the city and I’m riding home on the Metro and a group get on the train and start yelling at all us “whities” and calling us “f***ing white people” and lots of other horrible things. Everyone on the train had their head buried in a book or newspaper trying to ignore them. It made me so angry. But the creepiest thing about this, is these guys said they were from Chicago. Hmmm, I now wonder what church they went to.
When was the last time, the Obama’s visited Iraq or Afghanistan, to thank our troops for their Courage, Bravery, and Sacrifice?
When was the last time, the Obama’s stood before ANY cheering group of military, Veterans OR Active Duty?
I thought the Leadership position of the Commander-in-Chief would require more than showing your backside to our Soldiers.
But, I could be wrong
Every cohort of the American electorate has an extensive clueless faction being led by it’s collective nose to vote.
American presidential elections are some of the most studied phenomena ever.
Peculiar. Ridiculous. Stellar. You name it, it’s in there.
And it is the People who make it so.
Hang onto your butts: we are in for a wild ride.
I’m voting for the candidate that understands American power and influence in the world.
No evidence from Pig in a Pant Suit or H.O. that they do.
Personally, I think McCain has a clue about it. Military service tends to school one on the subject.
However, I think McCain is quite vulnerable *personally* to MSM attacks during the general election.

I attended what was considered by many to be a “Black” church for a number of years. State Senator Maurice Washington in Reno is also an ordained Pastor. The strange part to me was how everyone except the vast majorities of the attendees declared it to be as such. To us, it was just a good, wholesome, solid experience. Race never came into the pulpit or out of it. We are all brothers (and sisters) if we go back far enough and the Bible clearly shows us that none of us is any better than the rest.
Christianity is about accepting the fact that nobody can attain Salvation without the sacrifice paid by Christ and not about what color our skin is or how much pigmentation it contains.
You serve your alma mater well.
I think if Obama wins the Pres (this is my worst case scenario of course!) I really believe he will do a horrible job.
But - will anyone be brave enough to acknowledge it? Or will the media look away at every screw up he makes because he is black (I know, only 1/2 black 1/2 white but for some reason the media forgets about his white side). Will anyone have the guts to say the guy stinks?
Nope - they’ll find a way to still blame it all on BUSH.
Thus, I hope McCain gets in because I really think Obama winning the presidency will do a lot of destruction to race relations.
Hmm…maybe McCain could take care of that by having Condi Rice as his VP running mate? Oh…what the heck would that do to the Nov elections??

Not only has Obummer Not gone to Iraq or Afghanistan, FRANKSALTEREGO, he or his complaining wife have never thanked any of our men and women fighting over there, nor the ones still stationed here, for their service and sacrifice. They never will because they’re against defending this country and it’s people. The troops won’t see this despicable couple until they disembark the planes at the airport, maybe. If they show any kind of appreication to our military men and women, they’ll be run out of town on a rail. Their anti-war stance is one of the strongest points that have them where they are in the race today.

How soon before H.O. verifies his lack of depth, knowledge, skill, gonadal fortitude, and strategic vision to guide his review of the information brokered by the Defense establishment to the Executive Branch?
Then what?
Who is this sychophant going to appoint as SECDEF?
Who will be his Treasury Secretary and how will that person keep the cash flow going to stay in this fight?

Personally, I believe that every presidential contender should cut his/her teeth by being a governor of a state, which is really a small version of the federal government.
None of the current candidates have really presidential qualifications, but of the bunch, I would be forced to go with McCain.

On August 27, 1994, Clark, then director of strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, went to Banja Luka - and met with Ratko Mladic, the bloodstained military leader of the Bosnian Serbs. (My note: everybody apparently forgets that before Serbia’s the aggression in Bosnia the same Ratko Mladic was military commander of the Serbian army (”Yugoslav Peoples Army”) in Croatia and conducted large scale massacres of Croatian civillians there, especially in the ethnically “cleansed of Croatian population “Krajina”, another Serb-proclaimed “republic”). The State Departement had advised against the meeting, on account of Mladic’s well-documented war crimes in Gorazde, Srebrenica and Sarajevo. Still, Clark and Mladic had a jolly time. I used to try to defend GWB against the rants of BDS acquaintances by saying that you can’t make it to the highest office in the land unless you have some semblance of intellect… but Barrack Obama may make me eat crow. Take away the cue cards and he’s at least as lacking in eloquence as President Bush has been on occasion when speaking in public. The big difference (and big deal) is, George Bush has generally had good intentions and exhibited a lot of patriotism and belief in America; Obama is so blatantly Marxist that it astounds me so many people are so enthusiastically willing to put him in the driver’s seat of the USA. I’m beginning to feel a strange sort of empathy for the people who suffer from BDS. I think I may be coming down with a touch of BHODS, and we’re still a long way off from the generals.

Am I the only one who sees a mommy child relationship here? I’m so proud that you have done what I told you to and look how good you turned out, sheesh. Generally mothers choose the family church and im sure it’s the case here which is telling but Barack goes much further than that. It looks as if she has picked his friends too its really sad to see a male deconstructed in this way. Does she sit at the head of the table and carve the turkey on angstgiving? Does Barack have to sit with the children? This woman rode her brothers scholar athlete coat tails to Princeton she wasn’t smart enough to get there on her own and she has never forgotten that fact. Outspoken is one thing women close to me always speak their mind its one of my requirements. Doesn’t mean I will agree though. I was initially informed by the MSM that that Michelle Obama was accomplished. In fact I was very proud of her. Since then I have learned that not only is she an affirmative action carry, but that her salary more than doubled since her husband became Senator. Now we must bow to this anti-American witch? Seriously, I am so sick and tired of the MIDDLE CLASS from both parties sitting around whining when all they have to do is sit down, turn off the TV and talk to their representative.
Obama is elite because
a) He’s half-black, therefore he’s perceived as Black and people feel sorry for him because of it (give him money and a good job) and many of the whites on the left who are voting for will do so just to show how tolerant they are.
b) He thinks that people like me stick to my guns and my religion because of immigrant labor. The reason why we have immigration is because liberals are too damn busy drinking beer, sleeping around and doing drugs to sit down what used to be normal: Have a good, old-fashioned American family.
Bush served his country. McCain served his country. Hilary and Obama were rubbing noses with the elite because her gender and his race gave them an extra advantage because people felt guilty about being white men.

Underseige, there is a Major I know who took a Purple Heart for getting egg shells in one of his eyes. The medic took it out right away and said it would have come out in 5 minutes by tears but he still got the Purple Heart. John F Kerry isn’t alone on this one.
