Stuff Muslims Don’t Like: #3 Cartoons

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 9, 2008 01:56 PM

The sharia creeps in Canada are making noise again. The Religion of Perpetual Outrage strikes anew. As usual, they’re up in arms over a truth-telling cartoon–which makes this a natural entry for our Stuff Muslims Don’t Like Series. Because if there’s one thing they really, really don’t like, it’s Western cartoons that force them to look at themselves in the mirror:

Police in Halifax are investigating a complaint about a political cartoon that some members of a local Islamic group claim is a hate crime.

The cartoon, published April 18 in the Chronicle Herald newspaper, depicts a woman in a burka holding a sign that reads, “I want millions,” and she says, “I can put it towards my husband’s next training camp.”

The cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon is a reference to Cheryfa MacAulay Jamal, a woman from Nova Scotia whose husband was arrested in 2006 in an anti-terrorism raid. Qayyum Abdul Jamal was released from jail after charges against him were stayed on April 15.

Zia Khan, director of the Centre for Islamic Development in Halifax, said the cartoon goes beyond what can be considered free speech.

“You would not put a native American Indian with feathers and say I need money in order to cull white people’s heads. You wouldn’t do that. This would be libelous,” he said. Khan’s group called police on April 21. He said the group also filed a complaint with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, a hate crime is committed to intimidate, harm or terrify an entire group of people to which the victim belongs. The victims are targeted for who they are, not because of anything they have done. Dan Leger, the Herald’s director of news content, said the cartoon does not take aim at all Muslims.

“The whole purpose of that cartoon was to comment on the outrageous demands of this individual for compensation long before any hearing into her case had ever been held,” he said.

In an interview with the Herald before the cartoon ran, Jamal said she wanted to sue the federal government for what her family has gone through and told the reporter, “I want millions,” Leger noted. “[MacKinnon] depicted her exactly the way she looks and used her own words, and that’s the genius of cartooning that you’re able to do that,” he said.

Indeed, the cartoonist is depicting Jamal exactly how she looks. Not as some bigoted steretype, but as an exact representation.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, I don’t think American Indians have “cull[ed] white people’s heads” for at least a century. They realize it’s 2008 - not 1508, as many radical Islamists think it is.

And this is why hate crime legislation is bad. A number of years ago I had a discussion with my left wing sister regarding hate crime legislation (after the Matthew Shepherd murder). My position regarding that case is that executing those animals for murder is not going to be any different if you tack on a hate crime penalty. Her answer was, it would cover the lesser crimes based on hate, such as beating, vandalism, speech etc.

I told her that would lead to the thought police and now we have Canada criminalizing cartoons.

Now we don’t even discuss politics.

I assume that you are asking if a statute making the action which you describe in your post a crime would ultimately be deemed unconstitutional as impinging protected speech under the 1st amendment. The wording of the statute obviously is key, but I think if you took such action in an effort to communicate your disdain for Islam and were prosecuted under the statute in question, you would ultimately win on a 1st amendment theory. Similar logic with burning the flag. If you were simply attempting to harass or intimidate Muslims by your actions, then I think you lose. It’s all about intent.

I agree. Punishing someone who murders in a robbery different than punishing someone who murders someone because that person is a member of a given race is insane. In both cases the victim is dead. What does the reason behind the crime matter one bit? Its murder either way. But once again, liberal morons try to score brownie points with the victimization crowd; by once again supporting a law that hasnt an iota of substantive or logical merit to it. It just sounds good.

Which means it’s all about thought. Ergo, it’s a THOUGHT CRIME.

You cannot *prove* intent unless someone explicitly says “I’m taking a leak on the Koran to intimidate and harrass Muslims.” Projecting intent on someone’s actions based solely on conjecture and opinion is a violation of the basic right to free speech (not to mention a right to a fair trial and equal protection under the law). Or can we just call peeing on the Koran an “artistic display” and get away with it?

Otherwise, we need to haul the “artist” who created the “Piss Christ” before the a human rights commission for hate crimes.

Ok, I haven’t even finished reading the article, I just had to stop here and say this guy’s analogy is ridiculous. You probably wouldn’t even see a cartoon of an American Indian wearing feathers talking about culling white people’s heads, because (as far as I know) not many American Indians go around with feathers on their heads any more, aside from special occasions; Muslim women still wear burkas as a rule. American Indians stopped scalping folks quite awhile ago; angry Muslims continue to slay infidels to this very day.
Moral relevancy has become a thorn in the side of common sense.

libocrat, let’s go very slowly now shall we, because it’s pretty clear that you’re more than a few cards short of a full deck.

Question 1: Is burning the US flag or burning or “pissing” on a Koran protected speech under the 1st amendment of the US Constitution (a document you may want to have someone read to you at some point)?

Answer: Generally speaking (in my professional opinion), yes. The outcome would be different if the flag or Koran had been stolen or if the act was intended to harass or intimidate rather than communicate a political message.

Question 2: Do I personally approve of flag burning or the destruction of religious materials as a means of political communication? Answer: No.

Question 3: Is libocrat a dim witted tool? Answer: Yes…of the highest order.

If you see flag burning as a pressing issue, I would suggest that you get started on working to get the Constitution amended.

eq, “intent” is an element in many, if not most, crimes. Take, for example, the difference between 1st degree murder and manslaughter.

Halifax isn’t know for its tolerance. One of my friends converted to Islam, who was a white Canadian. She faced all kinds of discrimination from ARABS because she didn’t wear the hijab and because she was white they thought she was a whore.

Now, I realize that to liberals, this is acceptable because they don’t believe that someone can be racist towards whites just because whites have, well, quite frankly, successfully colonized much of the world and beat everyone else at their own game, but it can and does happen.

Remember, orthodox Islam ie the Religion of Perpetual Outrage ie sharia law is all one and the same: An Arab-Berber male superiority cult.

What strikes me most is the hypocrisy of Muslims who demand payment for hate speech when Islam itself revels in hate speech. Muslims LOVE hate speech, at least when they’re the ones doing the hating and speaking.

They also play us for fools when they use our tolerance to extend their intolerance.
