Update: What happened to the La Raza/The Race earmark?
Here’s an update on the La Raza/The Race $25 million earmark that had been tucked into Barney Frank’s massive housing bailout bill. (Previous coverage here and here.)
It was stripped out of the final version of the bill that passed the House yesterday. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get their money:
The original bill directed $100 million to four community groups, including $25 million each for housing programs run by the National Council of La Raza and the Urban League. Republicans balked, saying the money was meant to help Democrats in an election year.
The language was stripped out before the bill came to the floor. But La Raza, the Urban League and scores of community organizations are still in line for housing-development money, plus $230 million for the remainder of this year and another $230 million for fiscal 2009 for mortgage counseling.
“It’s a political-ally slush fund,” said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, (R., Texas), chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, which opposed the package.
As I’ve reported previously, the left-wing mortgage counseling racket is and will continue to be well-funded by the Dems while Republicans sit back and do nothing. Refresher:
The Department of Housing and Urban Development funds hundreds, if not thousands, of these groups across the country. In October, HUD announced more than $44 million in new housing counseling grants to over 400 state and local efforts. The White House has increased funding for housing counseling by 150 percent since taking office in 2001.
Here’s a list (PDF) of national, regional, state, and local housing counseling grantees for fiscal year 2007–all of whom presumably were in operation when subprime borrowers got into the current mess. Among the major recipients:
*The AARP scored nearly $400,000 for training.
*The National Council of La Raza scooped up more than $1.3 million.
*The National Urban League raked in nearly $1 million.
*ACORN Housing Corporation received more than $1.6 million.
There is no concerted effort in Congress to de-fund the Left. There is no organized outcry from fiscal conservatives or immigration enforcement proponents or responsible borrowers/homeowners/renters to end these publicly-subsidized political pay-offs.
And so you keep paying the price of apathy–forking over your hard-earned tax dollars to radical left-wing outfits that use the cash to further shake down the government and corporations.
La Raza/The Race’s good friend John McCain was unavailable for comment.

Ah. So I was correct originally. $230M to these groups. What a boondoggle. Would love to see an audit of la raza’s books once they have finished. There will be trail of $ going from la raza to newly formed “mortgage counseling” centers (of course by the la raza top dogs), with much of it back into la raza coffers via new donations. Disgusting.

It would be interesting to calculate all the money our elected in DC are wanting to spend on pork on MM posts today. This is just one day. The DC bunch just got the April money from taxpayers and BOY now they have money to do as we please. If not, let’s borrow the pork money. I just signed a note this morning to build my house. I asked the lender if I could get away with not paying and let the government bail me out. I thought he was going to fall out of his chair laughing so hard. He said they would just force me to move and sell my property and make a profit. Too bad our government can’t react this way and force people to live up their commitments. McCain thinks he is going to pull in some votes from the Hispanics by supporting anything that helps them. Too bad he doesn’t feel the same way about tax paying conservatives.

Yes, incumbents need not apply. Even if you think “my guy is a good guy.” OUT WITH ALL OF THEM! It’s time to grab the pitch folks and torches and have another Boston Tea Party.
La Raza is just one more “nonprofit” pig at the public feeding trough that insinuates itself into our politics without being subject to checks and balances. There are supposed to be provisions against this in the Internal Revenue Code, but I don’t see them being enforced.

I am leaving no children behind, and I am really too old to have a serious dog in the fight to save our country and our world.
Funny though, I just can find no peace as I watch our civilization crumble (even though I still hope to enjoy a couple of decades of vigorous and pleasant life before the arthritis starts to bind me up, the eyes start failing, and all the moles turn cancerous).
It is sickening how the radical elements of our society change all the rules at their whim. Now, sodomy is hip, presidents can get BJs from interns at the office and don’t have to resign, powerful interests have decided to open our borders against all laws and the will of overwhelming majority, and a white-haired grandma from Dubuque is likely to get a pat-down search at the airport, because the PC lunatics want to pretend that she is just as likely to be a terrorist as young Arabic men who precisely fit the rational profile.
The people in charge want to give away our sovereignty and we seem likely to elect the most left-voting member of our Senate — a man too embarrassed to wear a flag pin in his lapel — to be the president of the United States. We are eager to elect him because we are just tired of that darn old uptight peace and prosperity Pax Americana we’ve had under those whitebread males and prefer, now, a leader of color (even if he is closely associated with insane, black-nationalist racial bigotry). The one bright spot is that if he wins, at least the one from our own team who takes such pride in selling us out will not win.
I am so depressed. I thank all of you who have more strength to fight the battle ~every~ day.

* JSM showed well and gained delegates in other early primaries
* Other opponents dropped out one by one, and he continued to score, leading of course to
** JSM currently holds well over 50% of the delegate count; i.e. he has mathematically secured the nomination; much to many, many folks dismay, but noone has yet shown that he illegally won. ["unethically" via open primaries, i suppose that could be up for some debate, but said debate is awfully difficult to raise now post-op. chaos]

I am a mere child turning 62 and expecting to collect my first SS check at the end of the summer.
I also try to divert myself by deliberately attempting to become an old crank who lives in the by-gone era that you mentioned. Honestly, though, it has not worked well for me. My whole life has been so engaged in the issues of the day I just feel lost when I shut if off for very long.
I also spend a lot of time reading history from a good deal further back, especially of the 17th and 18th centuries. Unfortunately, history always has a way of offering lessons for the present, which used to be one of its joys. Now it just depresses me to see that we have learned very little — if anything at all — over recent centuries.

I find it amusing(sorta, sad, but amusing) looks like both parties have put a candidate up for the general that the base of both will possibly hold their noses when they vote Nov. 4th.
Actually, Buckaroo, I don’t believe that the 17th and 18th centuries, to which I referred, include the 1800s. But no, I am not nostalgic for that era (as I am for the 1950s). I realize that our lives are vastly improved materially and that the improvement has extended to all persons, not just the elites, not just whites and not just males.
I was referring to the fundamental problems of governance and the moral improvement of mankind. I deliberately made reference to the era when Europe was emerging from from the despotism of king and church and invented modern democratic government. But the problems that preoccupied 18th century political thinkers are still very much with us: the power of interests and the diceyness of democracy where the electorate is poorly informed, easily swayed by demagogues, and susceptible to using political power to seize the property of more prosperous citizens.
And, in the moral realm, it is good to keep in mind that mass murder was truly perfected only in the 20th century. Not just the “factory murder” of the Nazis — earlier eras lacked the technology for that, after all — but the deliberate murder by the starvation of tens of millions in the Soviet Union, among other episodes. And then, of course, the killing of so many millions — civilians as well as warriors — in the great wars of the 20th century. I am not one to go wobbly over the use of the atom bomb or anything else the U.S. did in WWII. Still in all, we modern people got ourselves into these fixes (not to neglect WWI which impacted the US rather lightly but killed a generation of European men) despite all the “advances” of civilization.
With the Muslims, we are in about the same place we were in the era of the Crusades.
And if you read the news today, you are aware that the Russians paraded heavy military equipment through Moscow for the first time since the breakup of the Soviet Union. My guess is that the 21st century has a good shot at setting yet another record for mass murder.
I believe that the optimists of the Enlightenment believed mankind to be emerging into a happier era in all these respects. It is in this sense that I find our evolution to be a disappointment. (Personally, although I would like to bring enlightenment to all, in the interim, I am entirely in favor of killing the other bastards before they can do it to us.)
As that once murderous, capitalist, entrepreneur Don King said “only in America” how true, how true his words are.
After McCain losses to Obama in November We need to start a new party.
A Conservative Party based on the writings of the founding fathers and in the spirit of Ronaldus Maximus, a party not afraid to stand up, speak out, and vote for conservative principals.

FWIW, the term “La Raza” is used within Mexico to refer to descendants of indigenous Mexicans, differentiating them from “European” Mexicans.
So this term brings not just racism into the USA, but it also imports the class struggle between “native” Mexicans and the perceived “elite” Europeans that exists within Mexico.

Except this way: They set the minimum rents expected by landlords throughout the country, independently from whether or not the place rented or the place where its rented is safe, clean, adequate or desirable. And if you’re not on the dole, if your family gets bigger, you pay more for adequate housing.
Who’s hurt the most? Young people, starting out, who pay higher rates for rents than what would be set by a free market. Old people, who get trapped by fading pensions and rents that get set by the Mean Statistical Area average (which means the average rent of inner cities [low] and their nearby suburbs [high because they have virtually no rentals]). And working families, who don’t get rent support based upon the number of out of wedlock babies underfoot.
Landlords on the other hand love HUD and section 8 vouchers. They get to set rents much higher than their properties are worth. HUD sends them a monthly check worth 80% of their declared rent, and they get to collect 20% from the tenant. And even if a landlord doesn’t play this game, his property and rents are never below HUD’s voucher scheme. Until, of course, the property is skidrow fodder.

Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose.
