Breaking: Murder charges dropped against “20th hijacker”?

By see-dubya  •  May 12, 2008 11:29 PM

There’s not much information about this so far; the article’s only seventy minutes old as I write this. Still, I have to give a great big giant huh?

The Pentagon is dropping charges against a Saudi at Guantanamo who was supposed to have been the “20th hijacker” in the Sept. 11 attacks.

That’s Mohammed al-Qahtani, who had allegedly been subjected to some “harsh” treatment. More about him here.

I’ll update this post as more emerges. In the meantime, what happens to him? Do they just let him go?

MORE: The charges were apparently dismissed “without prejudice,” which means double jeopardy considerations do not apply and they may be refiled.

um, there WERE 19; moussoui, this puke, and a couple others are all “suspected” of having been # 20 at one point or another in the planning stages; they would perhaps have been there were there to have been 5 on flt. 93 …

    Honesty is the best policy.
Be honest in all you do.
Tell the truth, and treat people fairly,
and they’ll do the same for you.

Maybe if his attorney, Gitanjali S. Gutierrez, get a snipclitectomy, he’ll buy (what’s left of) her a burka, and they can move to Canada.

At least I’ll be able to read about it in al-TIME.

They surely did not clear him because of a sudden change of heart. They cleared him because a trial would have been embarrassing.

Maybe they have no case. Maybe they don’t really know whether he was involved in 9/11. It would not be the first government lie.

    Maybe he was tortured.

Well, there are two possibilities here:

    1) The prosecution did not have enough evidence to convice a jury to convict.

    2) Something came to light that will arise during trial which will embarass the prosecution and, vicariously, the United States Government.

And if the dismissal is a result of reason #2 we will probably never find out what happened.

By the fates, we can only hope so.

I’d like to see more details about the case, personally.

But injecting this whole “omg he might have been tortured”…i seriously couldn’t care less. I dont believe prisoners that our enemy have/had in their hands are afforded the same treatment.

Usually, they’re found missing body parts, like their head.

So cry me a river about waterboarding. Waterboarding is a *simulated* drowning.

    And I hope not.

There is a story about the oracle in ancient Greece. Athens was about to be attacked by the Persians (Iran - eeek) and wanted to know how to defend itself. The oracle said Athens would be saved by its wooden walls. What did that mean? Conservatives thought it meant replacing their stone walls with wood. Liberals thought it meant building a navy.

America is protected by its values — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Torture is the value of our enemies. We are not like them. We have a merciful God, not a vengeful one.

    lgm,

    Maybe you do.
I don’t. Not religious. If someone else is, that’s their right, and I support it.

    However.

And as much as you and your friends here attack it, that argument seems rather hollow coming from you about God.

You are correct about us not being like them, and then in another thread compare us as being rather alike. Another hollow argument. Torture is the least of their values. Death and abject submission by their enemies, however, is their stock and trade.

Don’t get me wrong…I don’t believe we should be torturing people all willy-nilly, but I can’t say its a negative if it gleens important information about upcoming attacks, or saves the lives of others.

And the oracle story…if your analogy was correct, conservatives would be hiding behind our wooden walls still.

I dont see conservatives dressed in pink in Berkley. I dont see conservatives running from Iraq. I don’t see conservatives advocating we talk to everyone and be more -understanding- of other countries. Just some food for thought.

    *shrug*

Prosecutors drop charges because there isn’t enough evidence to get a conviction, not because of embarassment. The fact that they were dropped without prejudice supports that this is the case.

No indeed, “we” are not…. “We” have way more useful idiots (such as yourself) running a 5th column operation to do all you can to undermine and destroy “us”.

Oh, BTW… Thank you so much for rewriting history. The correct version of the story is that “liberals” were running around wringing their hands and crying like babies. All the while, imploring the conservatives to give Persians (we know them as Iranians, today) anything they wanted just to go away.

“Conservatives” manned the boats, fought bravely, and defeated the Persians (did I mention that they are Iranians, today)! Then they came back and kicked the “liberals” behinds for ridiculing the troops that defended them!

Oh… here we go… I know better than to feed the trolls, but I just can’t stand it.

The alleged torture, which he detailed in a written statement, included being beaten, restrained for long periods in uncomfortable positions, threatened with dogs, exposed to loud music and freezing temperatures and stripped nude in front of female personnel.

oooooooooooo!!!! He’s walkin’ outta there with all his fingers and toes, both eyes, all internal organs in their regular places. He’s probably gained some weight, and has a free ticket home in his pocket — right next to his shiny new Koran. Yet this @$$wipe would have willingly flown a plane of AMERICANS into a building so he could collect his 72 virgins.

We’re better than they are?? You BET YOUR ASS we’re better than they are. If they get their hands on an American, they slice his/her head off.

[whiny lib voice]But I’m sure if we just talked to them…!!!! [/whiny lib voice]

    You simply disgust me.

    Conspiracy to commit maybe?

    Something is askew.

Moussaoui was originally suspected to be the 20th skyjacker, but now they believe that Al Qaeda thought him too unstable to join the initial attack. He may have been held back as the core of a fifth crew or as part of a follow-on attack after Sep 11.

Qatani, on the other hand, is linked to Mohammed Atta, the leader of the Sep 11 skyjackers, who was waiting at the airport to pick him up. The FBI has documented a phone call between the two at the airport when Qatani was turned back by a suspicious immigration officer. The case is stronger that Qatani was to be a muscle man on Flight 93, the jet with only four skyjackers, which crashed in Pennsylvania.

There is no need to try Qatani in criminal court. He is an enemy combatant who is making war on the US without a uniform identifying as such, in accordance with the Geneva Convention. Consequently, he can be shot, just like the Nazis impersonating Americans during the Battle of the Bulge.

Or we can hold him until the Muslims cease their jihad against us, which is to say, we can hold him forever.
