Well, now you get into a tricky area. For example, Gore’s father voted against the 1964 Civil Rights act, and only later voted for related items out of political expediency.

Why is it that Fritz Hollings was never called on to the carpet like Lott? He was a segregationist, opposed integration, made numerous racial slurs, and was a prominent Democrat.

Lastly, and probably the most striking difference between Lott and Dodd, Lott’s statement was explicitly racist, whereas Dodd’s statement wasn’t.

Lott (at a private party): “if Lott’s 1948 segregationist presidential bid had succeeded, “We wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years.””

Dodd (on the Senate floor): “He would have been right during the great conflict of Civil War in this nation.”

Even if you assumed that Thurmond and Byrd were equally racist (however you might measure that), the words “striking” and “explicit” have no place here. They are virtually equivalent, notwithstanding where they were spoken.

The Republicans need to stand up for what is right more often. They definitetly need to stand up to this race baiting more forcefully. If Obama does become the nominee, there will be even more race baiting than we’ve seen in the primary – ’cause, you know, Republicans are the real racists. But we’re not and we need to stand up to the accusations and stop tip toeing around the issue (got that McCain?). I’m only 37 and I am so tired of the unfounded cries of racism. That’s why I love reading your blog and the articles of Ann Coulter & Thomas Sowell, but we need more voices and louder voices before we become an even larger minority.

This thread was on the race card, so I digressed a little with my last comment, but the Presidential race became racial when obummer threw his hat into the ring. With a black man running against a white opponent, it couldn’t be any other way, because as we all know, you can not critize a black person without being a racist. The blacks in this nation will never drop the racist card. It’s their crutch. I’ve known and worked with some great black people, who I consider some of my best friends, and they feel the same way I do, that it’s time to bury the “racist hatchet” and pull the country together, but alas, it won’t happen in my lifetime, especially if the markzist canidate goes in. There’ll be marchers on the streets asking the mesiah to take some more money from “the rich white people” so they can use it to line their pockets with it. I guess I’m a racist by saying this, but what the hell, I’m a racist simply because I’m white.

I’ve written on other threads that I’m voting for McCain, not because I support everything he stands for, but to keep obummer and what’s her name out of the oval office. I’ve also written that this isn’t politics as usual, and I hope the commenters here aren’t tired of reading it, but it’s true. We are at war, even though the MSM down plays it.We as a nation can not allow a democrat to be elected, because they’re spinless and weak kneed. They’ll cause the deaths of millions in our Great Country and world wide by meekly surrendering to al qadea, the taliban, and other terrorist groups.
Your taxes will go up, liberal judges will be appointed, they’ll bankrupt the nation with socialized medicine, and turn the nation into a spanish speaking society.
If you want to “prove a point to the Republican Party” by staying home or voting democrat, then by all means be my guest. But just remember, it will be a long four years, and you won’t be able to impeach anyone because there’ll be too many dems in office. After Jan 20, 2009, with a dem in, it will be too late. Think long and hard while you’re getting your fishing tackle ready, or just before you push that democrat button.
