Recycling tyranny of the day
Enviro-nitwit-ization across the pond (via the Daily Mail, hat tip – reader Bill D.):
A council refused to collect rubbish from a 95-year-old war veteran who is nearly blind – because he put a ketchup bottle in the wrong bin.
Lenny Woodward, a former Desert Rat who has lived in the same house for 58 years, was confused by a new regime of fortnightly collections and rigid recycling rules.
Residents have a blue wheelie bin for cans and cardboard, a green box for glass and a black bin for other waste.
Mr Woodward made the mistake of putting the ketchup bottle and a coffee jar in the blue bin when they should have gone in the green box.
When binmen inspected the blue bin, they refused to empty it and attached a tag to it warning him not to break the rules again.
And when his daughter rang Norwich City Council to explain that he was baffled by the new regime, she was told that “rules have to be obeyed”.
Mr Woodward, who lives alone following the death of his wife Hilda three years ago, said: “I’m very sorry it happened. It’s just I’m confused. I don’t know which bin is which so I put the wrong things in the wrong bin.
“They could have knocked on my door and spoken to me about it instead of putting a note on the bin saying they would not empty it.
“It all seems very childish. I’ve never broken the law before. I haven’t even had a parking fine or speeding ticket.” His daughter, Vicky Marshall, 46, added: “I was really angry about what happened and rang the council to complain.
“You would think they would take into account that he’s 95 and could make some concessions. But I was told these were rules and they had to be obeyed.”

We don’t have time for rational solutions, showing decency towards seniors, or treating people with respect. There’s trash to collect, in its proper bin of course.

That poor man. At 95 he sounds fairly lucid. I would be mad also if that happened to my 95 year old dad. At least he puts the garbage in the trash, not let it pile up in his house.

If it were me, I’d have told them to take the recycle bins away and I’d just throw EVERYTHING in the trash can.

That is what happend to us. Followed the instructions to a tee. Checked all plastic for the number on the bottom and placed them in the containers. Most kept coming back until we got a nansty-gram with a threat of a fine. Ditched the bins and threw it all in the garbage. I have not heard back.
Recycle-nazi’s have too much power
I throw everything in the trash now, all wrapped up in the usual black garbage bags. I just can’t be bothered anymore. When our garbage company mandated three bins, I put them all in the garage and put it all in the regular can.
First off, a boilerplate “thanks” for putting Erwin Rommel in his place and saving England 66 years ago, but get with the program, Gramps!
Totalitarianism is one thing, but we’re talking about saving the PLANET here, Gramps! If you can’t muster the patriotism to put your coffee jars and ketchup bottles in the GREEN bin, then we know a good government-reeducation camp that can!
We have was of making you recyle correctly. We have camps to educate you!!!

All my British friends are on the verge of moving to New Zealand. The’ve had enough.
True story: my best friend in England owned a chicken processing plant. One of his employees made a mistake and threw a live chicken in a large bin of dead chickens while the inspector was there. The employee immediately corrected his mistake and grabbed the chicken. Too late–the insepector saw it. My friend was fined 25,000pounds. He had to go to court and nearly faced criminal prosecution. Then they published his name and address in the paper like he was some sort of war criminal. The local PETA freaks made death threats on his life. He sold his portion of the company and moved to another home and is now in the chicken importing business because the regulations are not like the nazi rules that the British government has imposed.

I’ve been following British news for months on Fark.com and the Sun/Daily Mail sites, and I have never seen such a screwed up mess that England/Scotland have become in their insane desire for political correctness. 2 of my all time favorites is a guy arrested for assault when a burglar broke into his house, and another guy jailed for 24 weeks for calling a Welsh woman, “English”. The laws there are enough to make someone wonder if it’s safe to visit that place or not. Lord knows, what could land an American tourist in jail. This nonsense just adds to the wonder.

What really frosts your mug is when they take all the carefully separated waste down to the incinerator and toss it all in together. Waste-to-Energy counts as “recycling”, don’tcha know…
Get a few drinks into an environmentalist, and they will admit that the whole separating garbage thing is almost always a psycholgical exersize, that has nothing to do with solid waste reduction.

I doubt most Brits will wake up before it is too late. It’d take a revolution and those most likely to lead it are just giving up and leaving the country.
By the way, if they choose to leave by flying British Airways they’ll have a choice of vegan or chicken entree for a meal. BA won’t serve pork lest if offend muslim passengers and just recently took beef dishes off the menu to not offend the Hindus. Onc can only guess BA will eventually go totally vegan by removing chicken as well, so as not to offend their PETA passengers.

England should just pull the stopper and let that last rancid traces of the British Empire sinks beneath the waves of the Atlantic. While they grant free housing to convicted sexual predators and keep his presence secret lest they infringe upon his “human rights”, only to have him rape and murder a 14-year-old girl, build a giant mosque and refuse to deal with imams preaching terrorism, they muster up the full measure of outrage against this veteran for his unpardonable sin of not properly separating his recyclables.

The next time someone brings up nationalized medicine, please remember these are the same kind of “customer focused” government employees that will be mismanaging the medical system.
Sadly, looks like it is the case. Seems many in Great Britain, as with much of western Europe would rather subit quietly to the growing islamic presence than defend their own heritage and culture. It appears that that would inconvenience them, as if islam wouldn’t.
The archbishop himself would probably convert to keep his comfy position – and his head – when the time comes. I think the Church of England (at least in England itself, the African branch may be a different story) has become more of a social club of tradition than a stronghold of any deep christian beliefs.
Probably sooner than you might imagine.

Everytime I hear some lefty talk about compassion, this is what they yield (as in the case of the Brit vet).

I only support free-market recycling, not government-mandated recycling (so I don’t recycle).
If recycling was market-driven, and not forced down our throats by big government, it would work well and contribute to the economy and actually create jobs. And such indignities would not be heaped on honorable men (and women)by stupid government workers, as described here.
As it is, recycling is a lot like Affirmative Action: just more government-mandated garbage being forced on us. It is just another tax-wasting scam.
I do not return beverage containers for the deposit, I make sure they end up in the landfill.
As you can see, government-mandated recycling doesn’t work.
As Mr. Savage has said, only the soccer hooligans can save Britain.

My city -LA,CA has bins (no boxes yet) in three colors; black, green, and blue.
There have been complaints by neighbors that the trash men did not pick up because certain bins had the wrong items.

You’ve got that right. Here in the Peoples Republic of Minnesota they wasted millions of tax dollars building a trash burner that was going to generate ‘excess’ power into the grid. After it was in action tipping rates went from $32/ton to over $60/ton in less than six months. When the collectors found out they could truck it to a neighbor state for $42/ton and started doing so, the enviro-nazis passed a law making it a crime to take it out of state! Finally the law was rescinded but the tax clowns subsidize the plant $13 million a year to keep the tipping fees down. So we pay the fee anyway. Duh! It’s like Keystone Kops up here.
When this fine old gentleman was saving the world in the war he could have never dreamed this sort of nonsense was what he was fighting for.
If this guy worked for amnesty international, was black, hispanic, a muslim a buddhist asian or a white liberal, he’d get a free pass, and you all know it.
