Beyonce’s new brand of pedophilia chic
If you thought the soft-porn image of Disney teen queen Miley Cyrus—wearing nothing but ruby-stained lips and a bedsheet—in Vanity Fair magazine was disturbing, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Pop diva Beyoncé Knowles, 27, and her fashion designer mother have launched a girls clothing line that makes Miley’s bare-backed glam session look like a Shirley Temple photo shoot.
The Knowles’ family business, “House of Dereon,” recently published advertisements for its “Dereon Girls Collection” with young models who look no older than my second-grade daughter. They are seductively posed and tarted up, JonBenet Ramsey-style, with bright lipstick, blush and face powder. Draped in bling, several of the girls sport leather jackets and studded accessories.
One of the children wears sparkly, killer high heels (more pint-size Pussycat Doll than Dorothy from “The Wizard of the Oz”) and another slouches, gangsta gal-style, with a neon pink boa, leopard-skin fedora and stilettos. An even younger model is a toddler-aged Beyoncé Mini-Me with huge hair, skinny jeans, spike-heeled leather boots and attitude to match:
Abercrombie & Fitch prompted an outrage a few years ago with its line of thongs for elementary school girls and pedophilia chic catalogues. And, of course, Calvin Klein started it all with 15-year-old Brooke Shields purring that “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins.” But the House of Dereon photo spread sinks even lower. It’s sick and it’s wrong, and it’s not social conservatives who first said so. Fashion and celebrity websites have been buzzing with outrage over the past week:
“Pimp my kid,” decried one blogger. “Dereon Girls ad too adult,” concluded another. Gossip king Perez Hilton polled readers on whether the ad was appropriate. The overwhelming consensus: Hell, no.
The creepiness factor is heightened by the fact that women were responsible for marketing this child exploitation. I’d ask: “Where was Beyoncé’s mother to tell her daughter to wipe all the gunk off the Dereon models’ faces?” But Beyoncé’s mother—who has helped manage the “Bootylicious” singer’s career from childhood—is her eager and willing partner in crime.
As for the mothers of this new crop of Little Girls Gone Wild models, they were undoubtedly thrilled to see their daughters painted up and posing like Victoria’s Secret angels-in-training. If we’ve learned anything from Lindsay Lohan and her hard-partying mother, it’s that the Lolita-posing apple doesn’t fall far from the bosom-flaunting tree.
So, what’s next? Nine-year-olds performing stripper routines? Oh, wait. It’s been done already. I saw that very nightmare last fall on the cable TV reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”—featuring the grade-school-age daughters of Olympic star Bruce Jenner strapping on stilettos and twirling around a stripper pole in their parents’ bedroom as friends and family cheered them on. Future House of Dereon clients, no doubt.
Beyoncé’s clothes, you should know, are available at Macy’s department stores and other “fine” establishments willing to carry titillating tot wear. Shame on them all. Shame them all. It’s time to redouble our efforts to fight back against the Forever 21 culture that poisons Hollywood, Halloween, prom season and every season in between. In our indecent world, 7 has become the new 21.
Shouldn’t a child’s innocence last longer than a porn star’s .25-ounce pot of lip gloss?

I see this, the story yesterday about the prom dress, and I wonder what happened to our children’s innocence. It used to be that young, sweet girls were young, sweet girls until they were old enough to leave home. Now, it seems, innocence ends when they stop crawling. Incredibly sad.

little girls have been dressing up for years in moms oversized dresses and heels putting on a fashion show at home and playing dress up, no harm no foul. but, dressing these children in outfits for everyday wear is sick and playing right in to the sickos who prey on kids. heels for kids? please. how good is that for growing feet?

Sadly, Its more than Beyonce’s line. I have a 13 month old and some of the clothes she has been given as gifts are too mature for our taste. A shirt that is tied in front as if it is highlighting the boobs (if she had any)- that brand is Trendy Girl. She has a pair of jeans and matching jean jacket and the jeans have a zipper and button (size 12 mos). No kid not even walking yet needs a zipper on the jeans. She has never worn the jacket because it is fitted and too hard to put on. They are such a pain!! She also has some hand me downs and I would swear the style is supposed to be hip hugging flare bottoms. Why have hip huggers on a kid wearing a diaper that comes up past the belly button?? Thank God there are still some classic styles out there like Carters and Osh Kosh.

School uniforms. I recently saw a group of students dressed under Hartford CT’s new school uniform code, and they looked like young professionals rather than gang members and their beyotches (sp?).

As long as the ACLU comes out from under its rock to “defend” the “rights” of youngsters to wear whatever they please to school, this will persist.

While this clothing concept for children is definitely not new, I must say I’m still honestly shocked to see an entire clothing line that makes children look like street-walkers. High heels for kids?!
But it’s not just feathered boas and stilettos that are a problem in young girl’s clothing… the t-shirts that little girls wear often surprise me. At the store the other day I saw a girl – young enough to be riding in her mom’s shopping cart – wearing a tee that said “I’m looking for Mr. Right Now.” What a lesson to teach a child. My husband had to stop me from telling that mother what I thought right there.
Who’s going to buy this overpriced, gaudy fashion? The poor minorities who look up to Beyonce as a role model. Do we want them spending the money they don’t have on expensive, ugly fashion?

Last year I enrolled in adult school to take a class on a subject I needed to brush up on……. I was stunned by what I saw.The ” Teacher ” dressed in sweats and fuzzy slippers . Most of the students were just out of high school and there was even one girl who went to class nearly everytime wearing pajamas and flipflops…..The verbal interaction between the teacher and the students would NEVER have been tolerated back when I was in school….. And no one other than my wife and I thought this was odd…..

duddydaddy for more than 15 years – certainly won’t stop now. I also realize that some people are slaves to fashion and will wear what “celebrities” wear (or sell) no matter what. I feel badly for people who think that dressing like celebrity gives them value.I’m blessed that my 15-year-old has the sense to dress appropriately (even if high-school dance dresses – very modest ones – are freaking said dad out right now…) My youngest still goes with the boring stuff that Mom and Dad buy – so we’re good for a while.

The basis for all of this is that many young parents today don’t see parenthood as raising children. They see it as raising a “perfect little friend” for themselves. I use quotes there, because I heard my girlfriend’s friend use those exact words.
So, they dress their children the way they think their “perfect little friend” would want to be dressed. . .never thinking of the child as a child.
It’s truly disturbing.
My daughter is 18 months old, and I dress her like an 18 month old. What toddler/preschooler needs to dress like a hooker?? You can get arrested for not sending your kid to school, but not for dressing your daughter like a street-walker. How is it not obvious to these parents that you’re pretty much giving strangers permission to look at your kids in an inappropriate manner?
Also, I remember when I was in middle school/high school when the Spice Girls were cool so everyone wanted platform shoes, and one of the morning news shows did a thing about how bad they were for developing feet. I can only imagine what a pair of stiletto heels would do!!

I’m with you guys. At 25 I am often made to feel like an out of touch dinosaur. Out of touch with trends in fashion and entertainment? Most likely. But they are the ones who are out of touch with reality, decency and morality, the concept of consequences, etc. Frankly, I would much rather be a 25-year-old dinosaur.
I don’t have any children, so that might contribute to me not getting this, but could someone please tell me why these clothes are so terrible? Other than their general ugliness of course.
The clothes may look too adult, but that doesn’t equate to “slutty” or to something that would appeal to a pedophile. There isn’t any skin showing which is an upgrade from the clothes sold to kids at places like Wet Seal.

I agree with EQ about going counter-culture. Its the only way i’ve actually felt productive as a parent, is to keep them from being like everyone elses perfect snowflakes that dress in the latest trends.
Same here, EQ! (Except I’ve got a couple months to go before I’m 25.) The counter-culture went from being an actual “counter-culture” to a bunch of people who want to be different– just like everyone else. The true counter-culture has become those people who still choose to live their lives morally.

I agree, my daughter now 15 was telling me about one of her classes, the teacher asked everyone to put their cell phones on her desk that if she caught them with one texting in class that it would be taken away and their parents would have to come and pick them up 23 out of 28 kids put cell phones on her desk, the teacher asked the remaining students if they had one, everyone kept it simple by answering no, except for my little darling that has an opinion about everything, she said ” No I do not, let me tell you why, I don’t need a cell phone at school because I don’t run a business, I don’t have children that may need to contact me and I am at school and need to listen to what my teachers are trying to teach me so in the future I can run that business, have those children and live a comfortable life, the teacher laughed and said “Thank you for that.”
As for clothes she is a modest dresser only what is appropriate as she also says, you can’t see anything on her I think she wears 5 or 6 layers.
Anyone who’s walked through an urban shopping mall will understand that Beyonce’s new line of ‘pedophilia chic’ will soon move to the top of the single-mama cash expenditure list – crowds of young ladies on public assistance, yet strolling their babies around in designer clothing (Hilfiger, Phat Pharm, Sean John, Timberland, etc.) that costs more than a month’s supply of Pampers and Pediasure combined.

I can see where not having kids would give a different perspective, and that’s fair. Sometimes its hard to see how parents react to things, or why, when one doesn’t have children. I was sort of the same way, before I had mine. Not to the extreme of thinking this stuff was ok, but i sometimes didn’t understand why parents did things…and now, i understand rather well.
The big problem with this is, if you’ll examine the picture, is the “maturity” involved with the clothing. Replace those clothes (and appropriately sized, of course) on someone 3 times their age. Would that be appropriate? Well, moreso than this, certainly. But not placing them on a toddler.
It runs along the vein, I think anyway, of having our kids grow up WAY too early. I dont want my 2 year old to look like she’s 22. I want her to grow up and be a child. By rushing kids to act (and dress) like they’re older, I believe it robs them of the childhood they so richly deserve…it is something that can never be repeated or replaced. I want my children to grow up…i want my daughter to be 2 going on 3, and my son to be 1 going on 2…not 2 going on 23, and 1 going on 22.
And for some reason, I find dressing my daughter or son up in something that makes them look like they’re about to go to the club…just seems wrong to me. And does to most parents who hold some sort of decency standard.

I just called Macy’s to cancel my account. I explained why and then said I would not return to the stores or their website until they get rid of the offending kiddie porn apparel.
My job involves trying to sort through the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse, and find ways to help children who have been victimized by others who found them “sexually irresistible”.

I am considered the “oddball” mom at the figure skating rink because I NEVER let her wear midriff revealing skating costumes. I always put on her costume show orders NO BELLY REVEALING COSTUMES.
