Sen. James Inhofe weighs in on polar bear mania
Sen. James Inhofe, one of the few sane voices in the Senate battling global warming hysteria and Gore Inc., issued a statement about the polar bear listing today:
Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, today expressed disappointment with the U.S. Department of Interior’s final decision to list the polar bear as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.
“Unfortunately, the decision to list the polar bear as ‘threatened’ appears to be based more on politics than science,” Senator Inhofe said. “With the number of polar bears substantially up over the past forty years, the decision announced today appears to be based entirely on unproven computer models. The decision, therefore, is simply a case of reality versus unproven computer models, the methodology of which has been challenged by many scientists and forecasting experts. If the models are invalid, then the decision based on them is not justified. It’s disappointing that Secretary Kempthorne failed to stand up to liberal special interest groups who advocated this listing.
“Lost in the debate is the fact that polar bear numbers have dramatically increased over the past forty years – a fact even liberal environmental activists are forced to concede. According to Canadian scientists, 11 of the 13 bear populations are stable, with some increasing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now estimates that there are currently 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears. These numbers are substantially up from lows estimates in the range of 5,000-10,000 in the 1950s and 1960s. Credit should be given to protection already provided the polar bear by way of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the several international conservation treaties including the 1973 Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and the U.S.-Russia Polar Bear Conservation and Management Act of 2006, as well as conservation, education, and outreach agreement with native peoples.
“Today’s decision will have far reaching consequences. Liberal special interests have employed hundreds of lawyers to try and convert current environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act into climate laws. Yet the ESA is simply not equipped to regulate economy-wide greenhouse gases, nor does the Fish and Wildlife Service have the expertise to be a pollution control agency. The regulatory tools of the ESA function best when at-risk species are faced with local, tangible threats. Greenhouse gas emissions are not local. The implications of today’s decision, therefore, will undoubtedly lead to a drastic increase in litigation and eager lawyers ready to use this listing to do exactly what they have intended to do all along – shut down energy production.”
See this Senate minority report debunking the myth of imminent polar bear extinction.
See also my sit-down interview with Sen. Inhofe last September on his truly maverick attempts to inject reason into the Beltway global warming debate.
Keep carrying the torch, Sen. Inhofe. It’s a lonely job. We need you there.

Much more from Allahpundit, who sums it all up:
Your quote of the day comes from Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who notes with great nuance that “this listing will not stop global climate change or prevent any sea ice from melting.” It also won’t stop China from continuing to belch out greenhouse gases at such an amazing rate that in two years it’ll have singlehandedly wiped out all of the reductions from the left’s beloved Kyoto. What it will do in theory is give greens the right to use the Endangered Species Act to challenge economic development all over the country, on grounds that carbon emissions anywhere are a threat to polar bears everywhere.

Next, McCain will say he’s committed to put together a “Polar Bear Advisory Working Group” in his administration, admonishing anyone who would dare drill in ANWR that he’s not going to make a phone call to some parents of a polar bear cub that their mommy won’t be coming home…
A sane politician? To bad we couldn’t clone him. Or extract his common sense on this issue and spread it around to the rest of the wretched politicians.
I think it’s time we all got together and had some polar bear stew.
I hear it tastes just like chicken.

Actually bear tastes more like a cross between lamb and beef, surprisingly mild in flavor. I make a mean bear meat chile and the ribs are awesome on the grill. Hugh Hewitt has been the only sane voice on air or the blogs pointing out this insanity of listing the polar bear and I have blogged on it a couple times. Go Inhofe, a sane voice in the din of eco-insanity.
Actually I was referencing a commercial for (I think) KFC.
Still, a big polar bear roast to protest this stupidity would send a pretty loud message to these morons.

Very sloppy. This time the far right hopes are pinned on a politician who is being paid off by the big oil and gas companies to peddle their views.
Easy to find online
Only Texas senator John Cornyn received more campaign donations from the oil and gas industry in the 2002 election cycle.
The contributions Inhofe has received from the energy and natural resource sector since taking office have exceeded one million dollars.
So what sausage, bear sausage is very good as well. Obama collects huge amounts from oil companay executives so your point is what?
Doesn’t make what he said any less true.
I mean, come on, if shady political transactions were all that relevant Barack Obama would be giving his flashy speeches to Mr. Jeremiah Wright, Hitlery Clinton would be baking cookies with Chelsea, and Johnny McDoodoohead would be searching for water in the Arizona desert.
Sloppy indeed … on your part.

When Hugh is not on the radio or teaching Constitutioal law he is fighting the environuts in court and has been pointing out for weeks how the moonbats will use this to cripple the economy and any energy development.
Wait… so political contributions totally invalidate what a politician says? I think we could apply this mindless philosophy to the far Left as well. Assuming we dont encounter those dastardly political double standards again.
No problem RWR, just bring the beer and we’ll chow
Shameless plug
Ooooh, those evil oil and gas companies - ooooh. They help heat people’s homes, provide energy so you can get to work…bad, baaaad….
The only question at this point is which beer would go best with bear, Stone IPA, Ruination, or Arrogant Bastard?
Or better yet …
Drop me a couple hundred bucks and I’ll even make it myself if we get a few weeks to plan! I make a tasty ale and a wonderful over-hopped pilsner!

I am an exmember of the Sierra Clup and the World Wild Life Fund so I know how tey work and think and the will use the polar bear just as they used the spotted owl to cripple the US timber industry. I am a nature boy and very green just not a stupid Gore hotade drinker. I like clean tech but not idiotic economy killing useless measures. Polar bears survived warmer eras before modern man invented the SUV.
Arrogant Bastard IPW is very good
oops IPA
Um .. ok …
So what is it?
Ruination or Arrogant Bastard?
RWR
http://www.rightwingrocker.com
Hmm .. I think Arrogant Bastard is a dark ale, not an IPA. I’ll have to go check the bottle. I do remember it being VERY dark, unlike the deep brown color of an IPA …
RWR

I actually prefer a very bold cabernet or zinfadel with bear but an IPA is better with the chile
Just as I thought … not an IPA, just an excellent dark ale.

“You’re not worthy!”
I think we need to file an injunction against China because they spew greenhouse gases that will, of course, kill off the polar bears. I wonder how we have lived so long without sabre toothed tigers.
Then there is load of propaganda for the children from the washington post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/kidspost/pdf/KidsPost_051308.pdf
Not one mention that the polar bear population has increased and their are a number of gaps in their timelines.

We need a predatory animal elimination law not a protection law. Several people are victims of bear attack every year. Often they eat environmental friendly hippies. So they are treacherous as well.
Thank goodness the dinosaurs are extinct or the enviros would be protecting them.
I don’t like any bears. Any why are they only sticking up for the white bears and not the black bears and brown bears. Who speaks for them? Enviros are racist.
I’d bring a case of beer to hang with goatsbarnyard and RWR if I didn’t have to eat bear, i’d prefer to eat a cow
They are both bitter ales, its been awhile since I had a AB ale, have not tried ruination. My fav IPA is made by the Mendocino Brewery

Well then, I guess it’s time to bring nuclear power back.
RWR, you must be out here on the left coast to know those beers?
Well … why not eat the bear before it eats you?
I’m sure it’s quite tasty. I’ve never had it before.
Besides, I don’t think anyone would stop you from having beef. The point would be getting a bunch of us right-wing extremists together to show the libs that Woodstock wasn’t all that.
Ruination, in my opinion, is just a little too hoppy - almost to the point of being sour. My favorite IPA (and IPAs are my favorite kind of beer) is Stone IPA, with Victory Hop Devil (brewed in Downingtown, PA) coming in a close second.

I hear that polar bear meat, like grizzly bear meat, is rather nasty tasting. This is because of what these critters typically eat(rotten meat and the like). I have eaten black bear (who tend to dine on more vegetation) and it is quite tasty.

I have eaten rattlensakes and javalinas that I’ve killed so its not a matter of not caring for game food. I just don’t like those stupid bears. I guess, now that I think about it, that is a good reason to eat them.
Standing by for verdict on cream schnitzel. mmmm. schnitzel….
I have to run over to BevMo to research the previously mentioned beverages. mmmmm beverages.
Grizzleys like black bears are omniverous and will eat anything that smells like food. All bear meat is very fatty and has to be cooked properly
AGH, Bear is one of the tastiest game meats I have had and that includes possum, muskrat and gator and many more, heck I am a country boy
GBY,
I was raised a country boy. We didn’t have in-door plumbing, had an outhouse, My grandma, who seldom wore shoes, used to kill slow possoms and other varmints crossing the barnyard with a pipe. Said critter became stew.
Now I am a businessman in the people’s republic of Kalifornia surrounded by commies.

GBY,
I’m near Rancho Cucamonga, which is spanish for Rancho Cucamonga. Its an artificial town (planned community) near the Ontario airport. and a lot of nice vineyards.

Finally, a sane voice in congress. Yeah, but it wont last long, given the three libs we have to choose from as of now.
AGH is right , conservative thought controls most of the land area in Ca, the libs just own the population centers in LA and the Bay area and along the coast. The central valley is solidly conservative as is large portions of the southern tip.
Next their going to tell me that their global warming projections were correct and my thermometer is lying. Oh wait … they’re already doing that!
Millions of people around the world don’t enough drinkable water or enough edible food each day and we are worrying about polar bears????!!!! I fear we have slid down the slippery slope too far to ever get back.
GBY,
Small world, a friend just sent me a cell phone photo of a hotel that is on a boat on the river in Sacramento, and a bunch of other shots. It really looked like a fun place. Apparently there is a brewery there too. I quit for the evening but thought I’d better let you know. No reports of polar bears there.

This issue is beyond simple.
Liberals desperately need to VALIDATE their irrelevance(or create some relevance) on this STARSHIP known as MOTHER EARTH.
Liberals know that they are SUPERIOR, SMARTER and more CARING than average folk. So obviously LIBERALS are NEEDED to SAVE THE WORLD.
Liberals have a view of mankind and American society and tradition that involves THEM righting all the wrongs that they themselves have deemed wrong.
Baby seals are being brutalized. WE WILL SAVE THEM. (Darwin has now been thrown under the bus).

How are the Chinese salmon doing??
I mean, all that HYDRO-ELECTRIC 3 GORGES eco-terrorism!!!
As opposed to the big green environmental lobby that pays out more in political contributions each year to peddle their alarmist, unscientific views?
I guess by this logic the people of NYC and Great Britain should also be considered by endangered species.
I’m a little confused.
Cheney and Bush had their WAR for OIL.
They are both STUPID and EVIL GENIUSES, and they plotted this OIL GRAB.
WHERE IS THE OIL?
I mean, WE HAVE TRILLIONS OF BARRELS.
Cheney and Bush fooled everyone and went to war for OIL and got none?
These 2 DOCTOR EVILS couldn’t have allowed OIL PRODUCTION……here??
And BIG OIL who ostensibly owns CHENEY and BUSH, didn’t DEMAND the right to drill our own??
And how does/did Cheney and Bush benefit from this LACK OF OIL???
I’ll wait libtards.
good point TK
So computer models of (supporting the hoax of) global warming can be acted on to protect some polar bears, but computer models that show social security and medicare bankrupting our nation get no attention?
Back in the 1930s, newsreels showed that global warming was going to wipe out the polar bears. That was before we were all going to freeze due to global cooling. They also said oil supplies were going to dry up in a couple of decades. I’m glad someone in Washington is still sane. The sad part is that this environmental stupidity is going to cost us taxpayers more money and give us less liberty.
OK, James Inhofe for President. Who is with me?
I’m a bit late to the party, but I wanted to contribute. From comment #13:
It seems that any kind of contribution at any point in a politician’s life invalidates their arguments, no matter how sound they are. You could have Congresscritters live in a hermetically sealed dome with no access to any media and someone would still claim that their policies were based on who built the dome.
(Cynical? Me? Nah…)
To be a democrat or RINO you gotta be blind to the fact that - people who write computer models to study ‘the problem’ will tend to make certain that their services will continue to be required.
In other words, what computer geek is going to release data from a model that indicates that there isn’t any ‘problem’? There HAS to BE ‘a problem’!!! .. or they’re suddenly unemployed.
Good point drfredc! It was one of the few things where Bush actually tried to do the right thing - just before he enacted medicare D, the second largest entitlement in history.
This polar bear fiasco and Gullible Warming, too, shows what so-called scientists have come to - if there’s disagreement between reality and computer models, the “scientists” choose the computer models because they can get money from the government and they want to push an agenda.
Climate models
And I quote (emphasis my own):
Scientific principle dictates that, regardless of the observer, the theoretical model holds. In the case of climate modeling, economy modeling, weather forecasting, quantum physics, chaos theory, etc., we are not using scientific reason, but rather probability modeling. In these cases, the observer must remove themselves by attempting to account for as many variables as possible, running the model over and over, and developing a probability curve.
Of course, if the “scientist” had done that, he would have given a % chance of the model following the prediction, rather than this direct statement:
But that’s what you get with a left-wing school agenda that is more interested in teaching why Jimmy has two mommies, or that global warming is caused by rich white men, or that those who want to vote against Obama are simply racists.
Hell, what do we need to know about science, physics, math, statistics, logic, or philosophical reason? Those are tools of the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie.
How about human beings next–or don’t we count?
All of these words on this blog and all of the other blogs like it amount to nothing. They won’t listen to us when it comes to immigration and they sure as hell won’t listen to us about our need to drill for more oil. And now the republicans in congress think McNutJob is going to be their savior this fall. Will someone please wake me up when this nightmare is over?
Scientists, physicists, mathematicians, statisticians — they believe human created global warming disastrous climate change theories more than 10 to 1 (ten believers per skeptic).
Yet you who know almost nothing relevant claim science is on your side.
As for “unproven computer models” — they got us to the moon.
sausage..SC made a good point on another posting about the validity of the data.
If I was a DVD sales market analyst and I secured grants from Sony, and then came out with a report that said Sony sold the most DVD players for a given time, and the numbers were accurate…would my report be false because Sony paid me?
Facts are facts.
If he took money from an oil company, and then said this, i agree with SC that it would need to be scrutinized a bit more, but the *DATA* itself will always bear out the conclusion.
today must be a quotes day

Like Jenmom, Inhofe makes me proud to be an Okie.
As a person who relies on, and uses, facts to base my arguments…I just dont believe on a whim that there are 10:1 as far as scientists are concerned. is there some data you can share on that?
As far as the models…the models are prone to error, as the people who made them. I would rather believe, in the case of the polar bears, that the locals who *visually* confirm there are more bears, and by the statistics quoted that indicate the bear population has grown by 4x in the last several decades, as proof that the models are at best, flawed or unreliable in this instance.
Computer Models = GiGo
This is such typical bullsh+* from the liberal side. This tactic is childish and since I’ve raised two girls I am quick to identify it…get the focus off what one did by blaming the other for something else…Some people never grow up!

This is a lie. Show us where you got this info. Don’t try to insult mt intelligence please. I know for a fact it’s 50/50 (skeptic/believer). Moron.
As a scientist myself, I can tell you that a model is nothing more than an educated guess at best, made with the facts at hand which in this case, are meager at best and mixed with considerable conflicting information SHOULD influence the model.
The problem you have here is that you have polar bear biologists trying to be climatologists, and climatologists trying to be polar bear biologists. It doesn’t work.
And let’s just ignore all the meteorologists, who deal with real weather every day, who think that “global warming” is complete bunk.
This is pure Darwinism! Survival of the fittest! Is lgm admitting that he doesn’t believe in Darwinism and evolution? What next, abortions? “Thoughtful people” as liberals in colleges?
Otherwise: nice try. Computer models, even with the primitive computers in use at the time, used real data from real observations to make predictions (with considerable equipment redundancy and leeway built into the calculations). The vacuum of space was demonstrable. Gravity was constant. The motion of the moon and Earth were predictable.
As a biologist myself, I can tell you that life has been through more and bigger changes than some ice melting, even in out time, and has persevered. Great extinctions anyone? As Michael Crichton wrote in Jurassic Park, “life will find a way.” Or it doesn’t and it dies off and something else comes in.
lgm said:
What computer models got us to the moon? Rocket scientists, engineers and very brave astronauts got us to the moon. The 8 bit computers on the spacecraft were for system monitoring and control. The scant analysis of applied physics done on existing vacuum tube computers was limited to VERIFICATION of calculations that had already been done ON PAPER using SLIDE RULES. And then, wherever possible .. THEY ACTUALLY TESTED MOST OF THE IDEAS ON THE GROUND BEFORE COMMITTING LIVES TO THEM!!!
Of those who worked on the project - ZERO of them ever held a calculator in their hand in high school or college and few ever used a computer before joining NASA. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.
How about over 19,000 scientists and counting who agree with me that AGW is BUNK?
http://www.oism.org/pproject/s33p357.htm
Abstract:(emphasis mine)
To which I cannot help myself from adding - it’s been getting colder since 1998 while CO2 concentration continues to accelerate! THAT is the kicker none of you enviro-nitwits and eco-elitists can seem to wrap your mind around - it DISPROVES, BEBUNKS, OBLTERATES, and DEMOLISHES your precious little computer models that DID NOT predict it. Now you say that ‘other factors’ are at work. Ok…yes there are .. the VERY SAME ‘other factors’ we have been screaming for 20 years saying are the MUCH stronger factors that ACTUALLY control earth’s climate like solar output variation, earth’s orbit/tilt, la Nina /el Nino, etc. The puny amount of extra CO2 we put into the atmosphere affects global climate as much as the sea level rises when I pee in the ocean.
Look, if this helps out the enviroment as much as banning DDT did, I’m just so very happy for listing the Polar Bear.
Now true, the banning of DDT caused the death of MILLIONS of people. And yes, the enviromental impact stats on it were mainly pulled out of a hat, but gosh darn it, it made people feel good.
Well, maybe not the above millions that died of malaria, but what’s that price when compared to a sense of self rightousness?
It must be man who is changing the enirovment because the enviroment never changed before man was arround….. As for computer models, you can adjust computer models to produce whatever result you want. The democrats acuse people of ignoring science, well the fact is they acuse us of ignoring the science THEY like. The fact is that the most powerful infulance on the enviroment is the sun, yet thier models assume the sun remains constant which we know is not true. One single volcano can change the world tempature in less than a year yet thier models do not take them into account. So much for the liberal “science” and “computer models”. These arogant dumbasses will kill us all yet.

What he said!
“Global warming” is far more of a political phenomenon than a climatic one.
Maybe lgm ought to get out of the office once in a while.
Newsbusters did a story on this Australian scientist yesterday. Here is the Youtube link to his opinions on Global Warming. Worth the time to watch.
I’ll try that again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOLkze-9GcI&feature=related
I have much respect for science - it’s scientist I have a problem with. IF they would quit presenting science that hasn’t been proven as though it’s fact (evolution for example), I’d probably give an ear more than I do. Scientists simply fill in the gaps when they don’t have all the facts to serve their own political agendas and then present it as though they have discovered yet another secret to the universe. I will not replace my faith in the Lord with a scientist who thinks he’s God! I have zero respect them!
LGM is still proving my point that those who can’t do, teach..
and those who can’t teach, troll..
The problem with science is that it denies faith which actualy hamstrings it sometimes. How amny times have we seen science deny a fact only to have one person with faith in the idea to prove them wrong? Science is the orthodoxy of today. Never to be questioned. Yet they wrong more times than they are right.
nothing against a good amount of teachers I know.. except for the truly, willfully ignorant teachers like LGM..
Thanks for the add, completely agree. The whole junk science involved with this is at best, dubious, and at worst a complete fraud.
Woot! Rightwingrocker: fellow member of the greater Philadelphia area.
Dude, I live within about 3 miles of the airport.
That’s a pure lie. Over 19,000 scientists signed on to a protocol refuting the idea (not ‘fact’) that people caused warming. A huge percentage “don’t know for sure what causes it”, and a small, very vocal (”give me the grant money or you’ll all die”) group are riding this pony for all it’s worth. Most noteworthy is James Hansen whose data, models, and conclusions have been found to be BS by dozens of his peers. He’s an incompetent or a liar, or both.
This despite the fact that the actual scientific analysis says they didn’t, won’t, and can’t.
I’d say those 10 per 1 are on the dole.
Just a scientific thought.

Perhaps over the next 50-100 years, the polar bear pop can increase and migrate down to the our area here in North America (I don’t know if it will still be called the USA), where they can dine on the corpses of people who starved to death because of the mandate to grow crops for fuel.
Most polar bears live in Canada, what is the U.S. supposed to do about a Canadian problem? Maybe if the Canadians stop clubbing seals long enough, they will figure out how to deal with the problem.
I think you’re coming on to something here. Hmmm? Let’s see… polar bears eat … SEALS! So that’s the main reason polar bears are threatened; Canadian hunters are ’stealing’ the polar bears’ favorite entrée. Why I’ll even bet those hunters drive SUV’s too.
