Summed up perfectly in your headline …
Populist? Go, weasel.
One can only hope.
Thank god.
I’ve heard him called the GOP’s Jimmy Carter. He confirmed it w/ this stunt.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAhAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, man, that made my day.
It’s not like McCain had a chance anyway.
Thank goodness he said that. Now there is no danger of him being Veep.
Hasta la vista, Hucko.
I wish there was an inner voice among celebrities, not just politicians, that would say when a microphone is in sight: “You’re not as clever as you think.” Even Laurence Olivier stuck to the script.
A dumb joke. But watch the obama worshipers go nuts over this. We have the religon of perpetual outrage, now we have the party of perpetual outrage.
sarcam on AAARRRGGGHH someone said something that wasn’t worshiping saint obama!!! burn them!!!! sarcasm off
Actually I thought the remarks were kind of funny. We have just got to stop the nanananananananananananana “I got you” blogging.
Defeat Obama period and one of the best ways to get to him(Obama) is laugh at his stupidy and arrogance. The guy has a thin skin and we need to take advantage of it.
and as Michelle pointed out, this is a shot in the foot.
“That was the sound of Huckabee falling all over himself. There was an audience, and he promptly shot himself in the foot.”
Something must be in the water in Arkansas. I mean all the Arkancides of the Clintons and now this.

For McCain anyway…
I get the feeling that this election is going to be one hell of a ride. Helmet on, ruck up seek cover, you haven’t seen anything yet.
Huck’s next joke didn’t go over so well either.
This headline should have been up in every newspaper before Iowa, they gave him life that went straight to his big head.
Confirmed: Huckabee is an idiot.
ROFL best headline to date!
I wonder what shotgun the NRA recommends for blowing off your own foot?
Excellent proof for why he didn’t make it to the nomination.
Huck, go home!!!
Finally.
Huckabee has done something that would actually make me walk up to the man, take him by the hand, look him in the eye and say, “thank you. You’ve performed a marvelous service for your party and your country.”
Now only if McCain is smart enough to accept this “gift”.
It’s about time.
Sigh. This will probably get a lot of traction in the MSM. Hopefully they will not submit their viewership more than a few dozen times to the weird joke and the awkward moment of silence that follows….
In a saner time, Obama would probably hear about this and laugh at Huckabee’s comments.
In a saner time, so would we.
Instead, Michelle, you’re absolutely right. Huckabee just screwed any chance he had at the VP slot, and will make headlines around the nation for what may well be the biggest gaffe of the election season so far.
Are you sure that Obama won’t pick him?
FIFY.
What do you expect from Hope Arkansas?
In the tradition of the “how many” jokes, i offer this one: How many former Arkansas governors does it take to screw up a country?
The joke is already the number one topic on both Drudge and HuffPo. As if there were no bigger problems… So much for the VP slot.
Didn’t really want him for VP anyway. Don’t trust him anymore than I do McCain.
I’d disagree, GMgt. “Assassination jokes” - especially re: Presidential candidates - are always wrong and unfunny.
Obviously Huckabee didn’t intend to express evil intent toward Obama, this only - as Michelle noted - serves to confirm his idiocy.
If the Democrats wanted to create their very own cliche Republican, they would end up pretty much with this doofus.
He actually did run as “Jesus’ choice” and sees himself as wonderfully funny.
The press fed his ego (using the McCain diet) and it has led to this.
And yes, the party of victimhood will treat this as if someone threw stones at Messiah Barry.
That kind of a stunt by Huckabee also ends his show biz career (he was seen looking for an agent after his stint on the Tonight Show)) perhaps he will buddy up with Jimmy Carter and get Hamas money next…What a friggin idiot
It was a dumb joke and I agree with Yashmak. In saner times, a joke like that would have been ignored, but not today. We have too many in our society spending too much time looking for offense, that it will be all over the democratic news machines. Huckabee, the country has gone P.C.. You’ll have to learn to deal with it.
What an idiot. I’m glad he’s out of the race, but I hate that he took Romney out with him. Grr.
well, let’s hope that he has dropped off the list. but, knowing mcpain, one cannot be too sure. huck the schmuck, and nope this guy is not a christian, he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. or better yet, satan with a shepherd’s staff. his fruit is so rotten, what a tool, what a liar, we can only pray this guy goes back to Arkansas and stays.
GOOD THING.
The last thing McCain needs is HAckabee as an albatross….
For starters, I want to say that I never understood the rampant dislike for Huckabee…I mean, if it was Huckabee or McCain, how many on here would really pick McCain over the Huckster?
I personally don’t think it was an “assassination” joke…I think it was an “Obama is a sissy and dove for the floor” joke.
If he had made a comment about Hillary ducking sniper fire, it would’ve been marginally amusing. This was just stupid and will allow the Treason Media to smear all conservatives and gun owners as racists shooting at a black man, just as Michelle Obama predicted could happen. Nice.
AP says:
and MM:
hmmmm…………
Good grief, it was a poor attempt at a joke. Lighten up.
I suspect every sane person - even the few in the AP - realizes that a doofus who makes off-the-cuff “presidential assassination jokes” might not be a big plus on the ticket.
Huck is very funny…got to love his sense of humor..
Glad he is shooting his own foot.. Maybe he should duck
I wonder if he passed the Arkansas Hunter Safety Course?
I think if someone pointed a gun at me I’d duck too.
Is it Huckabee or Huckleberry? Sorry Huck Finn, you were smarter than that.
No loss. When I was a child the Circus came to town once a year and returned the next year. When was it determined that the circus would stay and stay and stay…
Please, please, please put the go56d8mn clowns back in the little car and stop scaring me and the children.
I fear this mess won’t be fixed in my lifetime.
I’m really curious how anyone would find presidential assassination “jokes” in any way excusable or acceptable, much less amusing. And are we to be inconsistent about “Assassination Chic”; is it a case of “it’s funny when a Republican does it”?
As one of the resident liberals here, I (gasp!) honestly don’t get what the fuss is all about. It was clearly an off-the-cuff joke, but I doubt there was any real malicious intent. So he doesn’t have a knack for improvisational stand-up. There are far worse things.
Now, if you wanna talk about his policies, that’s a different matter. But this seems fairly harmless to me…
The Circus must be missing most of their clowns, or at least it appears that way.
Additionally, the NRA stands for responsible gun use. It is irresponsible to point a gun at someone in the manner described, irresponsible to joke about it, and stupid to suggest that someone is a “wimp” for not ducking. Bravado in the face of a gun that is pointed at you is not a responsible gun owners trait. Schmuck seems as clueless about gun owners as BO.
Why are people reacting so negatively to a funny wise-crack? C’mon…it was a funny quip! For people to get all up in the *** about it, just shows how much the PC leftist thinking has crept into their lives. I don’t think there was anything meant by the joke, except to infer that Obama is a coward, an inference that no one can refute….hello? O’Reilly and Hannity calling…hello? Just a sec…he’s on the phone with Mahmud, the oppressor!
The huckster is such a featherweight. Who’s writing his jokes? Rosie O?
Yup - the very first thing my dad told me before handing me the ol’ .22 for the first time was “You don’t point it at anything you don’t intend to kill.”
And he wasn’t NRA, just had common sense.
(But more than one junkyard rat met it’s maker by a .22 short from that ol’ single-shot. I think one of my bro’s still has it….err…the rifle, not the rat, that is.)

I don’t think that much forethought went into it. He was in front of an audience of gun owners, there was a big BOOM heard from offstage, and he attempted to make light of it by making a (corny) impromptu joke that (he thought would) appeal to the crowd.
So he’s not a comic genius. BFD.
I’m missing something here, Right On. The humor in someone taking a shot at a U.S. Presidential candidate is what exactly??
Do also find the frequent offerings of like “jokes” from the left toward President Bush acceptable and/or amusing?
Do any of you think Huck did that to deliberately discredit the NRA considering how things are right now?
Did I miss something? If you point a gun at me, I’l dive for the floor! And I’m a viet vet, gun owner….sort of right wing..radical…but…is that what huckabee learned in his years of hunting?
purplepeep
Who took a shot at a Presidential candidate? I thought it was a loud noise from offstage? I guess I’m just a little confused…was there an assassination attempt I didn’t hear about?
For the record, and in all seriousness, a joke is a JOKE, and a hate-filled diatribe expressing the wish to have a candidate assassinated is NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Period. This was not the latter, was it?
For someone to jump to your conclusion about this joke is, well, IMHO (and no offense intended,) pure and simple political correctness. And, since being offended nowadays is somehow chic, let me say that I am offended by all the thin skinned types who want/need to blow these things out of proportion. It was a joke, obviously wasted on some who take any contrary comment or innuendo, as an insult.
Regarding the jokes from the left about shooting/killing Bush being acceptable…cite one, please. Everything I remember coming from the left regarding Bush, Cheney, Clarence Thomas and others, have not been intended as a joke, but more like wishful hoping from mean-spirited, clueless idiots on the left.
Best news I have heard all day…Jesus you can’t make this stuff up..lol
OK, Huckleberry is an idiot. But if Oramalamadingdong thinks that Billary is not capable of seeing that the inconvenience blocking her path to the WH is, shall we say illiminated, then he might well start diving for cover. Those two are evil incarnate.
I understand that, I’m asking why joking about an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate should be considered acceptable - much less funny. If you can explain the humor of Huckabees’ remark, I’d appreciate it.
You can find them quite easily, without even leaving this site: check out Michelle’s Assassination Chic Archives.
In fact, here’s a one-liner on a poster from there:
“Bush the only dope worth shooting”.
Now, I believe much of the populace doesn’t consider President Bush as quite exactly an Einstein. So, it’s a funny allusion to that perception.
Bush the only dope
I think anyone (left or right) can rationalize anything they may consider great good humor or funny one-liners. I would disagree the rationale makes wrong things into right things.
(And in this case, Huckabee acted like a dimwit in front of a fine and legitimate group that promotes gun responsibilty. I don’t think he helped the NRA’s cause with his remarks, in addition to sinking his own ship even faster.)
You can also enjoy John Kerry’s stand-up routine at YouTube.
Of course, it’s “It’s just a joke!!!”
Hopefully the NRA will denounce the Huckster.
Between Huckster and McCain? No difference. I wouldn’t vote for either!
Just found out from Kathryn Jean Lopez at National Review that the NRA audience DID NOT laugh at Huckabee’s joke. She posted the video.
As you’ll recall, the official report mentioned: “the audience laughed.”
Sounds like we have more media slandering on our hands, not of Huckabee, but of gun-owners.
purplepeep
I think you are making too much out of this. Huck is a hick that made a joke. I found it funny. If Barry was not a candidate, but Joe Schmoe the rag man, it would still be funny to me.
For the left to make jokes about our President being shot, or shot at, is NOT funny, and I don’t think anyone (with any sense) on the right would think it was, nor would they make that joke…the left, on the other hand, has no problem wishing any Republican leader, President or not, dead. They defend that kind of hate speech by saying “it was a joke!” I think there are vast differences in the two.
Botched Joke - free pass demanded
John Kerry
Jim Nabors played a convincing hick. Huckabee is a left wing political hack who thinks he can do a half fast blue collar comedy tour routine and make us think he is a conservative. I’m glad he dug a hole, jumped in, and will hopefully disappear forever from the politcal scene.
Huckagomer
I’m sorry, RightOn, but I don’t see the humor at all, even leaving out the question of attempted assassination of a presidential candidate. It’s just not funny on it’s face. More like a string off goofy words.
Now, if Huckabee had an overwhelming need to try to make a funny remark about an offstage sound and link it to Obama & said something like “That noise was just the sound of Barack Obama tripping over his feet in a headlong rush to negotiate with Hamas”, it’d get a giggle from me.
But the NRA and even he himself realized he’d crossed the line; from the Wall St. Journal -
“The audience fell silent and the charismatic former Arkansas governor seemed to immediately realize he had made a mistake with the offensive jab at the Democratic front-runner. An apology hasn’t been released.”
But I expect he’ll offer up one of those politician “I misspoke” type babble as an excuse/apology before too long. It took John Kerry four days, to offer his non-apology apology for insulting the troops with his “joke”.
That’s just my point. What is la haute comédie in one quarter is despicable behavior to the other. Both the doofus girl with the “Bush-dope” sign and the doofus Huckabee thought they had a hilarious line. It’s a shared idiocy - and not an idiocy I would encourage.
To illustate the point about differing perceptions, this from a commenter on the incident at HuffPo:
“I will be very amazed if Obama makes it through to the election without someone taking a shot at him considering all the racists there are out there and people like Huckabee making jokes about shooting Obama.
Despicable but what one expects from a neoCON.”
To sum up - it’s either “anything goes” or we are consistent across the board when someone goes over the line. I favor consistency.
We’re so screwed. It does not matter any more.
I will not vote for McAmnesty. I emailed that asshole years ago and told him I would like to move to Arizona just to vote against him.
Might as well let Obamachrist take the fall for screwing the nation.
And here’s the apology:
“During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.”
Hucky Baby:
Here’s a hint- you’re done. Why don’t you go back on your Carribean speaking tour now?
As an NRA member, I really resent this guy just reemphasizing more stereotypes of gun owners. He did us no favors but then the guy is a baffoon. I’ve never liked him and this incident is just a reminder of why I don’t.
Every once in a while the mask slips and Huck stands revealed as the nasty, hypocritical man he is.
Huck should have tried “He saw Ray Nagin admiring some assault rifles and he dove for the floor.”
Or he could have substituted Nagin with Dick Cheney and gotten laughs from both the NRA crowd and the lefties.
He may have received a better laugh and put a dig on Oblahma at the same time if he would have said….
Whoa! one of those crazy middle Americans just dropped his Bible and Hunting Rifle….
Fox & Friends is totally GaGa over the Huckleberry, I wonder if he will be making his regular appearance on the show anytime soon.
Hey y’all, ease up on the Arkansas thing. Idiocy and/or scumbaggery has more to do with being a politician than being from rural Arkansas. I mean, it’s not he’s from Texas after all.
…not like he’s from Texas…
sheesh… more coffee…
Though I gotta give him credit for a decent and reasonably quick apology (later the same day). I expected the usual weasely “if I offended anyone”, “I misspoke”, “i was misquoted”, etc. offered up after days of meetings with PR people that we get from today’s political lot.
I expect this will come up on Russert’s show tomorrow - Huckabee’s one of the guests.
Yes, at least he apologized quickly.
In fairness, I think the joke was connected to the Hillary/Sniper Fire issue.
Wow. Huckabee, silly men say silly things. Better stay in the ol’ belt where that stuff is tolerated.
Arent conservatives supposed to be smarter than dimocrats?? This makes me angry because it allows the left to say “see!!!” There isnt a thing funny about the comment to me; only some politican looking to suck up to the NRA thinking that an assassination joke is funny. We republicans have a tough enough time this election cycle without a-holes like Huckabee making morons of themselves, the NRA and all Republicans. Now Mike please go in the corner and stfu.
The kind of assinine behavior it takes for Huckleberry to think his popping off is cute is precisely what makes me think he is PERFECT for McCain - and just about ON PAR as far as his CHARACTER is concerned.
I am ashamed of those who consider him a CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE politician. He is about as much a Christian Conservative as Jimmy Carter the Baptist Sunday School Teacher is.
Just so BARFING.
Sorta like considering Fred Thompson to be a CONSERVATIVE after he got the Clintons off the hook for FELONIES they clearly committed - TWICE! :
“DUH! IT IS CLEAR TO ME - uh, DUH - THAT PERJURY (committed on live international televised depositions before World Leaders) WOULD NOT MEASURE UP TO IMPEACHMENT ACCORDING TO THE FOUNDING FATHERS! DER-DUH-DUH! (DON’T TELL ‘UM Ah MEANT “THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE DIM PARTY”! HYUCK HYUCK HYUCK!! DERRRRUH! And if yuh don’t believe ME - ah uh, er, DUH! - then go ask the Founding Fathers of the UN! They’ll tell yuh fer DURNED sure. uh, yeah DUH!)”
Didn’t this put him INTO the TOP THREE CONTENDERS — FOR PUNK McNASTY????
#1 - Fred Thompson for getting the Clintons off for the Felonies behind the Impeachment and also for the felonies of the CHINESE DONATIONS to the CLINTON CAMPAIGNS, for McCAIN FEINGOLD THOMPSON, and for DRAFTING SO WELL for McCain in 2007-Jan.2008
(extra high marks for helping any fellow Dim Socialists out of tough spots while maintaining an air of “Conservatism” in the process)
#2 - Newt Gingrich for being a fellow OPEN BORDERS, PRO-ABORTION, GLOREBALL WARMING boon compadre
I’m from Texas, and it sounds to me like you named yerself TWOFOOT because you got BOTH of them stuffed into your mouth at one time!
I have always taught my kids, if it is as funny to you when someone does it TO YOU as it is to you when YOU DO IT to someone ELSE, THEN it is funny. If you don’t like it done TO YOU, then it isn’t funny WHEN YOU DO IT.
You’d think someone RUNNING on their “CHRISTIANITY” would recognize THE GOLDEN RULE when they hear it breaking and it “sounds like a chair falling backstage”.
Huckleberry seems as familiar with the Golden Rule as he does with all the other Christian ethics.
If he were really funny he could have said;
“Wow, the Democrats in Congress finally made gas prices drop!”
That would have been good, or;
Hey, it’s like Wal-mart back there; prices falling on Chinese-made goods!”
Or, the really savy;
“Now that Hillary’s almost out of the runnin’, Senator Obama’s been waitin’ for the other shoe to drop. And there it was…”
or perhaps even;
“Are any of Senator Obama’s old radical college professors here tonight?”
My favorite would have been;
“No, no, no… Hillary said the fireworks were for AFTER her coronation!” said while looking backstage and shaking his head…
Cue applause…
To make a joke before a crowd steeped in proper gun training about someone AIMING a gun at a half-black contender for any party’s nomination, and coming from the lips of a SOUTHERN ex-Govenor, is a MONUMENTAL faux pas!
The point is, he made the stupidest joke possible, in the poorest taste possible.
And who delivered this idiot (and by extension Juan McCain)? Oh, that’s right, IOWA.
And on the lib side, who delivered the Turkey Hussein Obama? IOWA again.
One lesson we should take away from 2008 is that IOWA is not representative of “middle America”. IOWA has proven itself representative of BRAIN-FARTS on a grand scale, but certainly NOT “middle America”.
Here’s an idea: in 2012, IOWA goes LAST in the primaries. Never again should those dingleberries have first say in choosing our president.
Why anyone ever tookl this rube seriously is beyond me.
I know why the media did.
They knew all along this moment was coming.
Start telling these folky witticisms long enough and you will end up saying something very very stupid. As well as making yourself a side-show spectacle for their amusement.
Predictable, not sad, just stupid.
Good Riddance to another fake republican.
I wish it had happened sooner.
