Worst. Republican. Senator. Ever.
Quin Hillyer identifies the “Worst Republican Senator” in The American Spectator online. He’s almost right; there’s one worse.
Hillyer’s choice is Lindsey Graham, and his devastating concatenation of the case against the Senator I have dubbed “Dramatic Chipmunk” (after his resemblance to the subject of this viral YouTube clip) is useful and timely:
He praises liberals, but reserves particular venom for conservatives who disagree with him. The most infamous example came at a speech to the utterly radical Hispanic group La Raza — it was bad enough that he spoke to them, much less what he said — when he described what he would do to opponents of the awful immigration proposal he helped Ted Kennedy craft: “We’re going to tell the bigots to shut up.” The idea that only a bigot could oppose the Kennedy amnesty plan was a recurring theme with Graham: On This Week, he told George Stephanopoulos that opponents were like those in earlier years who put up signs that said “No Catholics, no Jews, no Irish need apply.”
MEANWHILE, GRAHAM deserves every bit of abuse conservatives can heap on him for his record on judicial nominees, which swings back and forth between pathetically ineffective and absolutely counterproductive. Of his leading role in the “Gang of 14,” which saved the Democrats’ unprecedented option of filibustering President Bush’s nominees, Graham clearly thought his gesture of goodwill would win him some chits with Democrats. Think again.
Read the whole thing. I say it’s timely because Grahamnesty is, I fear, on the short list of McCain choices for the Vice Presidency–or at least for a cabinet position. McShamnesty relied on him as his go-to guy and amanuensis on the campaign trail, and they really seem to be two of a kind.
I used to think McCain would be too smart and too considerate of conservative opinion to pick Graham. Recent events have disabused me of such illusions.
I’m sure there’s some payoff for Graham down the line. If that payoff is the VP slot, so help me, I’m writing a check for $20 to Bob Barr on the spot.* I’ve promised myself I’d never vote for a candidate who advocated the legalization of narcotics, but I don’t recall any promises about sending him money. And if you think that the GOP is bummed now, there will be open revolt if Graham gets too prominent a post. Think the Democrats had an interesting convention in ‘68?

Oh, right: I said LG was second worst. The worst Republican Senator is, of course, Larry Craig. What a creep. What a hideous embarrassment. Albatross around the GOP’s neck, you say? More like some giant incontinent pterodactyl around the GOP’s neck. Like an incontinent pterodactyl with a furtive predilection for illicit pterodactyl sodomy in public restrooms. Why Idaho hasn’t risen up en masse and demanded his resignation is beyond me. He’ll be a real asset in the upcoming gay-marriage debate, I’ll tell you that.
And as Michelle noted, Craig’s not just serving out his term to get the pension. He’s still making trouble.
Come on, Idaho. Next thing you know gay pterodactyls will be getting married, and when we need someone to blame, we’re going to blame you.
*I was listening to Glenn Beck a little while ago and he was venting about the Feinstein/Craig shamnesty sneak, and he paused and told his producer: “You know what? Book Bob Barr for another hour for TV next week, and an hour for radio.”

Neal and Bob Barr spar over war in Iraq
Bob Barr attempts to defend referring to our troops in Iraq as an occupying army. You’ll see in the hate mail this that at least one person agrees with Barr.
Okay, screw him. Freeweeder.

Does John McCain get 3rd place, then?
I think Graham is #1, but unfortunately, there are quite a few in line behind him vying for the top honor. What a sorry state the Republican Party is in.
Michelle, you ought to do a list of the top Republican Senators. We do need something to think positive about.
[edit--in response to the above comment, asking for the top ten good Republican senators.]
1. Coburn
2. Inhofe
3. Sessions
4. Umm…
Sue Myrick!!!
Oooops, sorry, she’s a congresswoman.
If he were still around, I’d say Rick Santorum.
Lindsay Graham is a disgrace. And I’m also sure he’s drunk the ‘Man-Made Global Warming Kool-Aid by the pitcherful. Gore and his Man-Bear-Pig. The politicians on board with this scam must be simply out of their minds.
For one thing, there’s plenty of oil and NG, we just need to drill for it and refine it. Also expand nuclear, wind, hydro, sun and hemp fuel.
Can’t anybody talk some sense into McCain, Bush and Gingrich about how temperatures rise first, and THEN carbon-dioxide levels rise.
Carbon-dioxide doesn’t cause warming, sun activity does, warming causes CO2 levels to rise.

I would love to add Joe Lieberman but he’ll never really go Republican. He’s doing enough damage to the Denocrats as an independent. Kinda offsets Patrick Leahy.
Someone with photoshop skills should put a strapped-on rhino horn on the upturned elephant.
well, I live in California and my votes are obivious…
1) Boxer
2) Feinstein
Even if you reverse the order it works.
That’s Oklahoma’s two Senators, at the top of your ‘Right On’ list, See-dubya- one reason for which is that each man actually listens to his constituancy here.
Inhofe is up for reelection this year, and is the only candidate I’m donating to. His opponent this fall is a professed Socialist named Andrew Rice.
And this guy is so far-left, he makes Obama appear tolerable!
Now THAT would make a great GOP slogan.
What a hideous article Michelle! Graham isn’t a republican he’s a . . . what, he is a republican? No, wait, let me check . . . oh, woops. I stand corrected and apologize Michelle, I thought I was correct in thinking he was a member of the same party as that ex-senator Chaffe fellow or that Olympia person . . . what, they are all republicans too?
The worst part of all this? The fact that it is these liberal republicans who now hold most of the top leadership positions in the GOP (not to mention mel “amnesty” martinez is the chariman). Is there any wonder why the entire party seems to have drifted left of center on all issues? Face it folks. The conservative arm of the GOP is DOA. Time for a new party.
And I will never forgive grahamnesty for his BS “tell the bigots to shut up” remark. I can’t beleive ANY state would re-elect him to the senate after that slap in the face to the base.
why does none of this surprise me
Craig needs to resign, immediately. The fact he has not only serves to fuel my dislike of this disgrace. He disgusts me for the way he’s handled his personal affairs, and this last epidode was not his first run in with public scrutiny.
Put the potatoes down, Idaho. Get rid of this schmuck.
Specter would still get my vote for worst, for stabbing Bush in the back immediately after Bush campaigned for him for re-election.
Broken record say..
This Froggy just won’t obey…
Out of the water WE will jump..
and the Grand Ol’ party…
Goes down-with a thump!
Broken Record also say…
Take the LOTEs away!
I cn haz GOP sellf-deestrukt?
I realize they are Dems, but had to vent.
umm, i’m not that up on all 100 senators but is Olympia Snow still active? I think I heard her being a (R)ino..
for what it’s worth.. I’m a Whig in name only.. (WINO)
LG and LC
Please, DLTDHYITAOYWO..
PLEASE!!!
If y’all are truly fed up with this, then I would urge you to work to repeal the 17th amendment.
As a native Idahoan I am deeply disturbed and embarrassed that “wide-stance Craig” (stole that from boomer) is still in office. Problem is that Idaho’s political machine is driven by wealthy ranchers and farmers who still find Craig useful because of his support of illegal aliens.Come on Idahoans, get rid of wide-stance and stop tolerating illegal aliens. They are destroying your state.
#15 Txvet2
I agree with you. Arlen Spectre would be my nominee for the dubious “honor” of worst Republican. But I would also add the pork-loving Ted Stevens and Trent Lott, whom I used to like.
Senator John Thune of SD is excellent. Put him on the good list. Remember, he is the one who rid us of Puff Daschle!
Sue Rocks…look at the work she does fighting the islamist.
Most obnoxious, maybe. But in terms of damage to conservatives, McCain and Specter are first and second.
DaveC, if you mean “active” like out playing tennis, I am not sure, but believe it or not Olympia is still a Senator, although Chaffee is not, but you are right, they are definitely both members of the (R)ino party.
The sad truth is that there is very little difference between the two parties any more. If you look at the housing bail-out, the pork laden farm bill, shamnesty, the flow of jobs to China, ect…. the American people are being screwed at every turn by members of both parties. There are more RINO’s than conservatives in the GOP.
Freaking Polar Bears have more rights than we do any more.
See-Dub
I’m not that familiar with Inhofe’s past but with his recent pronouncement that the global warming hysteria and polar bear peril is more political than scientific, I think he should get some slack and get off you list of second place nominees.
Am I the only one who see’s Graham’s mannerisms, and thinks their is a high probablity of a Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz Dress in his size, and a Rainbow Flag somewhere deep in his closet???
My list is for good Republican Senators, sillygatboy. Inhofe’s at or near the top.
You know. I think we will be seeing fewer rinos this election. They will just run as what they are, Democrats. They only ran as republicans to get elected. This election they will not need to. Sadly.
I REALLY feel silly now!
Lincoln Chafee was pretty darn awful.
Where does Mike Enzi fall on that list?
Most obnoxious, maybe. But in terms of damage to conservatives, McCain and Specter are first and second.
McCain is McCain (who knows) but I would sure put Specter with Graham and Craig (maybe even ahead). PA is a piece of work, they reelected Specter and turned their good senator out to pasture.
S/D Is there any way you can put another color on your name when you post so people will give you credit? I love your posts and always look to see who does the post I am reading.
L
I don’t think there are that many good ones.
Worst ever? Like anyone could even know that.

Best photo of McCain evah!
Thanks for the info..
active as in an active member of congress… and not
out to pastureretiredI truly don’t understand how this happened to us.
Can anyone explain?!
Yes, but McCain as the nominee is now the head of the Republican Party and is in a position to do severe permanent damage.
The other guys were backbenchers in the last few years (including McCapandTrade) when Bush was doing all the damage.
Cornyn’s been pretty solid, Hutchison? maybe not bad enough for the worst 10 but surely in the lower 20. I think Lugar ought to be able to squeeze in just because of his actions regarding Bolton.
As an Okie, I am proud of the recognition of our two sane Senators, Coburn and Inhofe.
Check this if you still haven’t decided.
Did I miss McCain’s conference call with Michelle????
I REALLY miss Jesse Helms.
Dang, we NEED him.
I have never felt such despair for the future in all my life! The worst part is, it is really the VOTERS who chose McCamnesty who are to blame. What the Hades happened? McCain, Graham, and Co just get further and further from the voters of their own party on the illegals issue.
OT – Haven’t heard that word since high school. Thanks CW for bringing English back to America.
/OT
The day Graham is McCain’s VP is the day I don’t vote for either of them. Seriously. Time to turn him out to pasture with Lott’s goats.
My vote for FAVE is JEFF SESSIONS!!!
What was Reagan said? I did not leave the democratic party. The democratic party left me. Hmmmm.
Anyone care to guess what these Republican Senators have in common?
Bennett, Craig, Graham, Gregg, Hagel,Kyl, Lott, Lugar, Martinez, McCain, Snowe, Specter.
Don’t just stand there – do something!
Donate to his primary opponent, Dr “Buddy” Witherspoon.
http://buddywitherspoon.com/donatenow/
Michelle – you ought to be blowing your trumpet for this guy to get into the Senate, here are his words on Illegas/Border
This is not a complicated issue. Illegal aliens broke our laws to come into this country and have absolutely no right to stay here. English should be the official language for our country, and all legal immigrants should be required to both read and write it with proficiency before earning citizenship. As Senator, I will work aggressively to solve the immigration problem that exists. First and foremost, I oppose any form of amnesty for illegal aliens. We need to immediately reduce the size of our illegal population by increased spending on border security and build a fence. Local law enforcement and immigration authorities must work together by sharing information and be given full authority to arrest and detain illegal aliens. In addition, we must require employers to verify their employee’s citizenship status and prosecute employers caught hiring illegal aliens. Finally, we need to cut government services that are currently being given to illegal aliens, and deport all illegal aliens convicted of any crime.
And here he is on the war
Being a veteran, I support the men and women of our armed forces, as well as those who stand in harm’s way. We have achieved some success in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and I am not willing to set a deadline for withdrawal and I will not cut and run.
IS that good enough for you Michelle to give him the face time he needs in his own post here, and on HotAir?
Do the right thign Michelle – give this guy a boost to at least get on the radar, so he can start to build momentum to throw out Graham.
Be the firestarter Michelle!
I actually like the dramatic Obama Youtube version
found here
To those who wonder why Santorum lost to Casey in PA -
There are two main reasons.
1) Some of my fellow Keystoners are so dumb, they thought it was Casey THE FORMER GOVERNOR (now dead!) who was running rather than his son!
2) Rick Santorum hurt himself by taking advantage of a state program that provides educational aid, even though his family was living in the DC burbs.
McCain — #1
Gramnesty – #2
One reason, their blocking of conservative federal courts judges. Another reason not to support McCain for Pres, I don’t trust him on Judges for the federal bench or the Supreme Court. Case in point: CA– most of the Judges on the CA Supreme Court were REPUBLICAN nominees. Take away the judges issues and McCAin looks more and more like any other dem, even BO. He even said recently (clip was played on O’REilly’s radio show today) something to the extent that he will consider talking to Hamas in the future. Of course, this is the same man who wants to close Gitmo, not waterboard, give due process rights in US courts to Gitmo terrorists, very strong on natonal security for sure, one tough guy alright.
This is one election where I would have to vote for McCain.
I’m glad Graham has an opponent in the primary. Witherspoon will definitely get my vote. If Graham were to win the primary, however, I would have to vote for him in the general because he does vote the right way more often than any Democrat.
If he were going to turn on conservatives the way he has, I wish he would have done it before he ran for the Senate. Maybe we could have been spared having him elected to a six year term.
Wait no one has said Senator Jim DeMint from SC? He ROCKS! He is my personal favorite!
Don’t really disagree, but what about McConnell and Bunning?
McConnell was missing in action on immigration…unwilling to make his feelings known…….COWARD!
Can we add Lary Craig to the WORST list. Aside from him being a pervert (allegedly, right), he is pro-amnesty and a co-sponsor to FEinstein’s sneaky amnesty provision. By the way, I hope everyone is emailing and calling your senators since they will be voting on this next week.
Yeah, that’s ALL we need: another liberal Republican. Joe is “right” on the war. On everything else, he’s as left as they get.
How about:
Barrasso (R-WY)
Burr (R-NC)
Corker (R-TN)
DeMint (R-SC)
Ensign (R-NV)
Kyl (R-AZ)
Isn’t he the father of Reece?
One problem I have with Barr, which may or may not be a huge one is his take on the recent ruling by the California Supreme Court concerning Gay marriage.
Barr actually sees this as a positive thing saying it should be left in the hands of the States. Well, okay, but this is not what has happened! The people voted NO to gay marriage and the CA SC overturned that vote! Barr doesn’t strike me as any too bright if he can’t see that. He actually said, “…that each state remained free to determine for its citizens the basis on which marriage would be recognized within its borders…” The STATE shouldn’t determine for its citizens anything. If citizen’s vote, their votes should be honored by the State.
An addition to my last post.
“The decision today by the Supreme Court of California properly reflects this fundamental principle of federalism on which our nation was founded. ”
So it’s okay for State SCs to rule by fiat and ignore the voters will.
What exactly is the difference between McCain and his mini-me Graham? McCain has all Grahams faults, and then some. In fact McCain is guilty of leading poor little Lindsey down the wrong path.
McConnell is an amnesty fan. His feelings are known. He worked hard to try to get amnesty through the Senate, stabbing his own GOP members in the back in the process.
Money talks. The GOP answers to the Chamber of Commerce Republicans. (To the extent that they are even Republicans.)
Voters are seen as disposable and replacable, money is everything. Look at the people the GOP recruits to run for open seats. Nine times out of ten they go for a rich liberal.
If you want the GOP back for conservatives, you need to outbid the liberals for it.
Speaking of Chamber of Commerce republicans, what the heck happened to Hot Air?? I’ve never seen so many RINO defenders in one place! If they, those who believe he walks on water, were to come here, they’d have heart attacks. Criticise him in the least and you are attacked for loving Obama and dissing the troops. Who ARE these people??
Ever?
OK, he officially went Democrat after getting booted in 2006, but Lincoln Chaffee was by far the biggest RINO ever.
Jim Jeffords was right up there, and both of Maine’s senators are extreme RINOs.
ok, I give… what do they have in common?
