Weekend open thread
Lots of family stuff going on this weekend–horse shows, piano recitals, graduation parties, the works. And to top it all off, there’s a new Ninja Warrior Ninja Fest tonight on G4 (sponsored by the Marine Corps!) that my kids have been looking forward to all month. I’ll be back later. ‘Til then, feel free to talk amongst yourselves or enjoy the rest of your weekend unplugged.

reland1 – That’s not what Barr is saying. Read it again. He is saying it’s OKAY for the CA Supreme Court to overule the will of the CA voters. He thinks the CSSC decision was the right one.
Yes we should have States rights, but courts should not be the legislators!

Either that or he simply doesn’t realize what actually happened and that makes him even scarier that he would make such a comment not knowing what he’s talking about.
And the legislators are to reflect the will of the people.
Also, I’m not libertarian. I’m a conservative. I like the platform of the Constitution Party best, but don’t like their choice for POTUS nominee. So I’m still at the ‘None of the Above’ point for ‘08.
CS – I agree, up to the States.. but Barr is saying it’s okay for the CASC to overrule the voters. That is NOT okay.

Joy…The Ca Supreme Court…is a function of the State of California..I reread the article….Barr is absolutely correct. If The CA Supreme Court says it’s OK for people to marry their cats…it’s a STATE issue.

Prop 22 as well as Prop 187 both received the mandated no. of signatures to be placed on the CA ballots…
both got MAJORITY votes…
both were “overturned” by the will of the few via the CA court system.
It is time that ALL of our elected officials take a page out of John Jay’s (first Chief Justice of the US- SC) book. He left that position because it did not have “enough power” for him. He became the Rep from his individual state.
It is time that Mr. Barr and all of our elected officials put the courts into their proper Constitutional place.

Unfortunately for the people of CA…they have encouraged activist judges appointments. This is a result. That court…has been overruling the people of CA for a long, long time. Unless the judges die or retire..the people are up —-creek without an oar!

Joy…I agree also…but, Bob Barr is correct in his answer. There is no excuse for legislating from the bench…but these are problems that can only be corrected by impeaching judges or…whatever. The judicial branch does not have the authority to Legislate…but then our government, Federal, state, and yes, local..reflects the intelligence of the voters for the last 100 years.

There’s a petition drive going on in Oregon for ‘open primaries’…I told the petition taker…”why would I sign that…I don’t have anyone that is even close to my values to vote for thanks to open voting primaries” ? duh!

Looking for an answer to who to vote for this nov. i went looking at some party platforms…i was impressed with the Constitution Party platform. Pretty much back to basics(The Constitution)and get rid of a whole bunch money wasting, over paid, bureaucrats. It’s worth a read, i’ve given up on the CC RINO’s.
Joy..I’m a really old woman… Please understand. I am in TOTAL agreement with you. JUDGES SHOULD NOT LEGISLATE FROM THE BENCH! But…my answer remains the same. The “powers that be” have a very long range view in reconstructing our constitutional freedoms… they have worked 24/7, for years and years, implementing their various schemes..to rob us of our rights. This did not happen overnight…it will not be fixed overnight. We have to be as vigilant as they are..as smart as they are..and work as hard and as long as they do to get our country back. Some say it cannot be done…I’m not one of them. It begins in your city hall, in your town, in your state.
I still like John Bolton. Let’s write his name in.

I agree that we may not get “perfect” and that we should vote for the best person we can. In most cases a somewhat flawed Conservative is always better than a liberal. McCain–I’m not so sure. His rudder seems to be stuck hard left.

Unfortunately — A good many people are too young to remember the disaster of the Carter presidency, including the respect the Islamists gave Ronald Reagan the moment he was elected due to his STRENGTH not his rhetoric or conciliation.
And the bulk of those periods were significantly warmer than what we have now. See the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous period for example: half a billion years of tropical weather and deciduous forests extending all the way to the north pole.
What level of hubris is needed to think that just because we like the average temps nowadays, that this is the way it is supposed to be? What next? The Earth as the center of the universe (again)?
The most telling characteristic of most of the Obama supporters is that they were born after the Carter malaise. They treat it like ancient history and haven’t the sense to see it for the harbinger of economic doom it is.

Anyway, Joy…good to hear you pen-lashed your gov. I send mine a piece of paper or two once in awhile, too! We are really in a quandry here. You and I have a very small disagreement. I would be willing to bet we agree on more than we disagree. It is going to take a lot of hard work to turn our country around…it will have to be done in small increments. We have been attacked for so long, by powerful organizations that have one goal in mind. Global governance. Unless Jesus comes back, we won’t see our country as it should be. Not in our lifetimes. Well, maybe in yours…but not mine. I have fought the system for forty years…along with many others..but to pinpoint a starting time for the “vast R/L conspiracy” (lol), would be hard to do. I started with the “round table groups”. Woodrow Wilson is a good place to start. Also..if you want an informative read..”Tragedy and Hope” By Carrol Quigley.

Also, I have a question for those of you who think McCain can get constitutional judges on the SCOTUS bench. How? Another gang of 14? What would be his incentive when one of the first things they’d do is overturn McCain/Feingold?
Republicans have allowed the Dems to block the up/down vote for how many years now for the lower courts? They’ll suddenly vote them all in for McCain?
As to the War in Iraq – how is his vision of winning by 2013 going to happen? Aside from demolishing GITMO and treating the terrorists like citizens, just how will he win the war?
Or is that doing exactly what the Dems have said, to set a withdrawal date so the terrorists know how long to bide their time?

In this particular instance, my intent was not to smear anyone, but I wanted to post a story that was not posted on here and wanted to ask fellow commenters on this board thought about the story (this was a story that is now in bold blue print on Fox News’ homepage presently which I think means it has been a story that has a high view count?).
I have asked questions on stories that examine noose cases, stories about the Iraq War, the expected Larry Craig resignation (that ended up not happening), John McCain being the GOP nominee (when it was once on a “death watch”) and other topics.
I asked a question in an “open thread” for thoughts about a news report. And some people replied in post 75 and 84. That was why I asked.
This is a forum where we are supposed to discuss issues and reason together.
I hope you feel the same.

Here’s an open thread thought…
McCain refuses to drill in ANWR because it is “pristine”. He would no more drill in ANWR that the Grand Canyon.
He cites his “hero”, Teddy Roosevelt, as the inspiration for his position (of course, he ignores the fact that his hero was his polar opposite on immigration).
And let’s not push for offshore drilling and forget the fact that China and Cuba are actively doing that very thing off our coasts.
SO he refuses to drill in pristine areas, yet he does not give a rat’s ass about the urban drilling going on around the country? That’s right – in neighborhoods, near schools, etc.
Here is North Texas, there is a mad dash to drill for natural gas anywhere they can. One proposal I saw recently has a well going in under a elementary school. Aside from the environmental damage, crashing prpperty values and danger of explosion, North Texas seems to have more than its share of radioactive material at the same depth where the gas is found.
So, let’s save those pristine uninhabited areas in the frozen tundra and expose our local populations to all sorts of possible calamaties. I guess McCain believes that radiated children are not an issue – probably thinks they’re easier to find in the dark.
It’s comforting to see that the Dems are settling into their usual campaign mode. Obama telling us that the GOP is a threat to Social Security. Sound familiar? Yeah, sounds like the politics of fear and division, but wait, isn’t it the Republicans who do that? Uh, no. Dems, as usual. And he’s also channeling Jimmy Carter, in more ways than one. Says we can’t eat, drive and keep our homes at 72 degrees all year because “the rest of the world won’t stand for it.” Huh? Come on, McCain, starting hitting this guy where he lives. Don’t give us this Mr. Nice Guy crap, because we’re going to end up Obamified if you do.
I’m from Arizona, now in Kalifornia and I love the outdoors and all the glorious places, but at this point if they knew there was oil below the Grand Canyon, I would be for drilling. At some point the survival instict needs to kick in and it seems that time is now.

Saw “Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay” last night.. was hesitant to go, but it turned out to be pretty dam funny. Mocks the heck out of the Dept of Homeland Security. Some unnecessary full frontal nudity which didn’t help the movie in any way whatsoever – doesn’t really bother me, but it just seems to be the latest trend in Hollynoodle.. see “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” for another example of full frontal nudity that serves no purpose other than perhaps convincing the director that they’re inspiringly avante garde or something.
I wonder how many stories of desecration of the Christian Bible (by you-know-who). Never seem to hear of any stories, but I’m sure they’re out there. Anyone heard anything / got links to stories?

Canyon de Chelly is better though than the Grand Canyon. Have you been there? Less commercialized, cool ruins, much more up close and personal and easier to get around.
You know what’s really crazy is how much oil is off the coast of MEHECO. For the life of me I can’t imagine why they’re not taking advantage of that.
Okay, well, I can guess, but sheeesh.
ANWR and surrounding areas have billions and billions of barrels. Add North Dakota, SD, eastern MT, offshore Atlantic and offshore CA, Gulf of Mexico, for starters. They have drilled in the gulf for 40 yrs. and not a drop spilled. Even through all of the terrible storms.

Ive never been to the GC, but I got a road trip scheduled in July. Chaco is on it, so is Antelope, Zion, Bryce and Mesa Verde. I cant wait!!!
I went to Zion and Bryce all but 3 years ago…and promised myself I had to go back. From the moment the landscape slipped from my rear-view mirror.
It was one of those hair-brianed stunts that I had decided to do in less then four days from the Bay Area. I got 10 days now, and I have every intention of enjoying every moment of it without being pressed for time (and without a cranky man!!! lol) I am almost positive I wont get lost this time. Just b-friend, sister and Me.

That will be fantastic. 5 years ago when I moved from Arizona I did a final northern tour through Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley and then the Grand Canyon. I love Arizona. I was born and raised there, but now I’m a Kalifornian. I love this area I live in. On the coast almost to Oregon.

Hi, Ya’ll. Last night before the sandman hit me with a dose of doze, I had the most uncomfortable think-fight with myself. Can you imagine, all you ladies, having to be swathed in black robes…head to toe…in the heat of CA, AZ, NM, TX, etc., etc.? I’m a tank top and shorts, kinda gal..I would rather be DEAD than too hot! My itty bitty husband is always too cold…I can’t get cool enough! One can always put more clothing on…but there is just so much one can take off! I hope our young people ( who like to get naked at the drop of a hat ) remember this when they insist on installing BHO as POTUS…LOL!
