Weekend open thread

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 18, 2008 01:53 PM

Lots of family stuff going on this weekend–horse shows, piano recitals, graduation parties, the works. And to top it all off, there’s a new Ninja Warrior Ninja Fest tonight on G4 (sponsored by the Marine Corps!) that my kids have been looking forward to all month. I’ll be back later. ‘Til then, feel free to talk amongst yourselves or enjoy the rest of your weekend unplugged.

Here’s something that has been on my mind lately. Seeing all of the comments on here and on the NRCC site… people are outraged with McCain and rightly so. Many people want to write someone in or simply not vote. But unless we organize and have a plan, that’s going to leave the door wide open for Obama to waltz right in. So, how do we organize and pick a person to write in? Michelle and other bloggers lead us in a battle to beat down Shamnesty last year… that shows what can happen when the masses mobilize. How about it? How do we enlist a true conservative and then get the people behind that person?

We don’t have to sit idly by and take who the media shoved down our throats. We have more than 5 months to make it happen.

    Ideas?

Though I don’t advise Everyone to do likewise, give serious thought to the issue. Let’s face it; libs are aborting thier own kids hand over fist. I figure ten more years of this garbage, then we can take over.

I’ve been noticing some liberals hitting conservatives over the head with a distinction between “diplomacy with” and “appeasement of” an enemy who routinely calls for your ultimate destruction.

If diplomacy involves the act of give and take, how is the act of giving anything to an enemy who calls for your destruction not appeasement?

I’m starting to understand that libs are comfortable with being defined by their intentions, but are uncomfortable being associated with the results.

Case 1. All the liberal European governments who tripped over themselves to sign the Kyoto Agreement, but who have actually increased their carbon output since.

Case 2. All of the money spent on liberal, unaccountable, “war on poverty” programs that have resulted in no decreases, but in fact, escalating increases of poverty within US urban centers.

Case 3. All of the liberal members of Congress who supported Operation Iraqi Freedom during the invasion, but who eventually backed away form their votes when situations got tough.

And now, the libs are parsing their time honored tradition of “diplomacy above all else” with the all too predictable end result of giving an enemy the upper edge.

Thanks, Julie, I missed that post of Michelle’s. McCain is disregarding a large block of conservatives, for political reasons. After all, he defeated Romney and Tancredo, the latter never received significant support, and once explicitly said that the pro-fence anti-illegal stance was a political loser, after pointing out a loss or two of candidates with this stance. Of course, there was the ‘damn fence’ comment, so he may also be personally opposed to the fence and halting of illegal immigration. I’d like to think he would adopt a tougher fence/illegal position after being elected, but I believe he won’t. Tough call, McCain or a long-shot conservative.

If we’re all going to go to Hell I’d rather that it have been a DemocRAT at the helm than a supposed Republican. President Bush has seriously wounded the Republican Party; McCain is poised and willing to put it out of its misery. “Maverick” was a great TV show but as far as being good for our Country, the present “maverick” stinks…

The only thing I worry about is appointments to the Supreme Court. But there’s absolutely no guarantee that McCain will make good ones, in fact I’d bet he’ll make crappy ones just so his “friends” will approve them. And why is it that the Democrats can almost always stop Supreme Court appointees they don’t like but the Republicans never can?

The subject of judges comes up often when speaking of McCain. I agree it is one of the most important issues facing us the next 4 years.

However, there is no way McCain can follow thru on any promise to give us conservative judges.

He will have in all real outlooks, less than 40 Republican Senators.

Without the power of 41 to block, mush less the majority to pass anything thru the senate, someone tell me how he is going to force conservative judges on that group of democrats.

    We can kiss that goodbye.

If we really want conservative judges, we must get our heads right on the congress. A strong conservative president like Reagan can do a lot, but the power to pass legislation and judges resides in the congress.

We must map out and implement strategies for that process. Otherwise we are all going to be here pissing down each others backs for several more legislative sessions.

We need to win more than the presidency every few years. We need overwhelming House and Senate victories. Then we can purge weak RINO’s. Till then it is all just circular firing sqaud time until we are all gone.

I sometimes think perhaps it’s better that a dim brings the country down but we have so many stupid people voting because they want “change”, I don’t know if it would make a difference to them. There seems to be a large segment of society that doesn’t feel like they have to go to work or do well in school, it’s the governments job to take care of them. The deck is always stacked against them, kind of like listening to Michelle the Mouth. Two degrees from Ivy League schools and she’s the most bitter woman I’ve heard in a long time.
Anybody ever try talking to some bright eyed Obummer supporter? Ask them what change they want and other than Bush being gone, they are not able to articulate it. Ask about his “record” in the state house in IL or the senate and again you get a blank stare and the mantra about change. They really don’t seem to know or care what he stands for they just think he’s “dynamic”.
I guess I could speculate that 4 years would be enough to tell the tale but look at what 4 years of Peanut Boy wrought us. I blame him for the trouble we have in the middle east today.
The only reason I am voting for McRino is my husband is on his way to Iraq as I type this in fact he may be there now. (This is why I am at the computer checking my im and email all day today.) He fears what Obummer will do and he will drop his papers to resign if he’s the president on 1/20/09. He just doesn’t want to be the last man left if that clown wins. He also doesn’t want to go on any excursions like Clinton sent him on in Haiti, Kosovo and Bosnia that had no real purpose or meaning. Lord knows what the dims have in store for us if they win but maybe that’s what it takes to wake up the Republican party and rid ourselves of these RINOs.

According to Reuters, yesterday or Friday, the U.N. is sending an auditor to the U.S. to investigate racism! Supposedly someone in government requested him. Had to be a liberal, probably BHO, or our State Department.

100 here is Sacramento Ca. Arni, our Republican governor who is now a Democrat wants to reband Conservatism into Democrat lite and the Supreme Court voted in gay marriage. The right isn’t found in the state constitution but 4 activist judges found the “right” somewhere. After we voters stated that marriage is between and man and woman. And they are Republican. Hell of a state. Anyone want to move here?

I stand alone often wearing my Reagan t-shirt explaining conservatism to 17-22 year olds. They seem genuinely interested. Maybe I am an oddity but since I am a returning college student I refuse to sit by and miss the opportunity to let them know that republicans and more importantly conservatives are not what they are often told we are.

I have discussed many topics with dozens of students and some professors.

The professors often look foolish and the kids just lack context.

There are millions of potential conservatives across America waiting for someone to introduce them to conservatism.

Yeah I have had some wierd looks from some clearly left leaning students. But often they discredit themselves with volume instead of reason.

I found that the students were pretty normal for the most part, it was the profs who were off the deep end. I recieved an “F” in a poli sci class for saying that I thought Reagan would go down as one of our greatest presidents. Of course the prof said (when I protested the grade) that was not the case but I later found out from a sorority sister that her brother had mentioned Nixon in a positive light and found himself repeating. He told her to tell this clown Carter was great. She did and got received an “A”. I admire what you are doing. You’re right, for some reason conservatives gave up the college fight some years ago and haven’t been able to get back into the fight. The liberals are so entrenched, I wonder if we ever will have a voice on campus again.

I also have all of Rush’s Club Gitmo t-shirts as well as the Operation Chaos shirt.

The college campus is where we are losing young people every day.
I walk in thru the courtyard, the popular entry and there are the “ACORN” folks every day. Signing up young people to register to vote. Of course they encourage them to register democrat.

This in itself is killing us. But that is another topic.

We have to address many topics in our future as a political movement. We allow ourselves to be drawn into corners by those whose dream it is to eliminate conservatives as a viable choice. Whether we want it or not we are in a fight for our political lives.

For those who do not understand just how badly the left needs to destroy us I urge you to study how hard they are working.

They are using every tool available to diminish us.

Often because we are decent people who just want to raise our families we do not fully join the fight.

Oh we’ll support a good candidate when they come along, to a point. But too many of us do not want to do the heavy lifting.

Take this website for example. Michelle has put herself out there and takes it on the chin every day for doing so. But how many of us actually stand up for her when we see the horrible things said about her.

What about Ann Coulter? Good lord the things I have read about her. Yet she still fights and writes every week. Some of the most interesting and funniest things about the left to be found anywhere.

What about Rush? On the radio every day for 20 years doing all he can. We should honor and support these folks in every way we can. I do not let anyone at school or anywhere else criticize these folks without a rebuttal.

And you know what I also defend President Bush. He has done much that I disagree with, but he has almost been alone when you look at who in Washington has been there to support him. Who has his back?

The only perfect man was Jesus. Knowing that I can accept that my politicians will not be perfect either.

The perfect republican is another liberal cannard. “Since your republican candidate is not perfect, you conservatives should not vote for him/her.”

All they while they are all too happy to have flawed liberals to vote for.

I’ll take a flawed republican or two and work as hard as I can to rid Washington of any democrat I can.

Global Warming! GLOBAL WARMING!!! OH MY GOD, WE’RE IN TROUBLE!! THE EARTH IS WARMING!!!

Well, yes it is. But not for the reasons that you might think. You won’t hear this in the mainstream media because it, frankly, doesn’t fit into their agenda. And despite what they say, they DO have one.

Yes, the Earth is warming. But then again, so is Venus.

    And Mars.

    And poor little Mercury.

This isn’t just me saying this, folks. This is JPL and the folks at NASA and other astrophysicists.

The last time I checked, there were no cars on any of those other three planets. No coal-fired power plants, either. No petrol-guzzling SUVs, either. So why are those other three planets warming? It has to do with the output from the sun. Again, do a Google search and you can find this out for yourself. There are some that think this raised output is also causing the Pioneer Anomaly (also known as the Pioneer Effect,) but this isn’t supported by the facts.

But those with a political or power agenda tied to global warming would have you ignore this inconvenient truth. So would Al Gore. They would have you believe that even though those other three planets are warming, the Earth’s warming is due to mankind alone.

    HOGWASH.

I’m not denying that our activities are making the problem worse. I can’t deny that, because to do so would be to fly in the face of stark reality. Again, Google it.

Mankind didn’t cause the problem, but we’re not helping solve it either. The emissions from volcanoes (including at the mid-ocean ridges (what are those you ask? G O O G L E I T.)) as well as the output from the sun as well as the methane from the warming Alaskan tundra are working together to create a really big problem.

Add to that the fact that warming and cooling periods on the Earth are cyclical. In other words, they follow cycles. Warming, followed by cooling, followed by another cycle of warming followed by yet another cycle of cooling. I could go on, but that should give you the idea. Weather on Earth is cyclical, it always has been over the course of many millions of years.

In studying the fossil records, it appears that 14 of the 15 mass extinctions on the planet were due to … global warming. The only one that WASN’T was the one of 65 million years ago that wiped out the dinosaurs. The mainstream media isn’t telling you THAT, either. Neither are those with an agenda, because it really is an inconvenient truth. Isn’t it, Mr. Gore?

The Great Dying of 250 million years ago was probably due to a flood basalt as well as other factors. This induced … wait for it … global warming. A really REALLY BIG warming

Again, there were no cars 250 million years ago, but those with the agenda would have you ignore this fact.

So, what do we do? We need to break our dependence on oil and coal and fossil fuels. There are those who say that nuclear is the way to go, but I’m not in favour of this. Again, not for the reasons that you think.

People, fuelled by the militant environmentalists, would have you believe that the Earth is drowning in nuclear waste. This simply isn’t the case. The truth is that ALL the nuclear waste produced by every country on the face of the Earth since the very first reactor went online would fill a …

… high school gymnasium. Seriously. Again, G O O G L E I T. That sounds like a broken record, I know, but the information is out there.

Don’t depend on others to look it up for you, since you have no way of knowing if they have an agenda or not. And the sad fact is that there are too many people on BOTH side of the problem that have agendas.

I don’t give an overweight rat’s rectum about agendas. You shouldn’t either. We’ve already passed one point of no return and we simply can’t afford to bury our heads in the sand and let those with the agendas lead us around by the nose. That’s not me saying that either, that’s Dr. Michio Kaku. Who’s he?

He’s one of the world’s foremost authorities in theoretical physics and the environment. The co-founder of string-field theory, his PhD-level textbooks are REQUIRED reading at most of the top physics labs.

Again, this information is out there, folks. Look it up.

Do it with an open mind and you’ll learn a great deal.

    Yes, the Earth is warming.

No, mankind is not the sole cause.

And Mr. Gore, you’ve ignored quite a few inconvenient truths.

If you want to drill for oil in ANWR build a 27 hole golf course there. Then propose a law the opens all country clubs to oil exploration. No democrat could vote against it.

I was embarrassed that the president had to go to the Saudi’s with “our” hat in “his” hand.

To ask them to do more so we could continue to do less. I would have liked an even stronger rebuke from the Saudi’s than was given.

Since our politicians refuse to address American production I would like to hear from some of these foreign powers.

Of course they do not mind taking our dollars for their oil.

I’m a Penn State grad Congrats to your nephew…. but a Flyers fan…. oh well. I’ll vote in November for the local offices and state offices but writing my deceased father’s name in for Pres.

Thanks Marine! The Pens are on their way to the Stanley Cup final now. Sorry!

You’ll love this, one nephew graduates today and his younger brother starts at the main campus in June for summer school!

As for the Nov. election, that’s a great idea, I think I’ll do the same, write in my late Father’s name. I’ve sent money to Melissa Hart’s campaign for Congress but the national party has lost me. The best we can do now is do our homework and support conservative candidates at the local and state level.

terrig, my two sisters kids graduated from Univ. of Central Fla. We are all proud of you and your husband for sacrificing so much for our Country, thanks and our prayers are with you and your husband.

Here’s a story that put a huge smile on my face this weekend. My son is set to redeploy soon, and it is easy to feel down hearted when I think of him coming home to the likes of Code Pink and other anti-military crazies. This young man, however, is proof positive that good, solid, young Americans are still being raised and they are not afraid of duty, honor and Country.

Boy stands up for Old Glory
By Myung Oak Kim, Rocky Mountain News

    (excerpt)

Jeffrey Sahli noticed the faded, fraying American flag outside Evergreen Middle School soon after he started eighth grade last year.

“I thought the flag wasn’t being treated with flag etiquette. I thought I needed to do that,” the 14-year-old said. “I wanted to serve my country and I thought, heck, I’ll start right here.”

With the principal’s permission, he began taking care of Old Glory. Every school day he carefully hoists the U.S. and Colorado flags before classes and takes them down before heading home. He folds the Colorado flag into a neat square, the U.S. flag into a triangle, and places them in a cabinet in the office.

He keeps them inside on stormy days.

Susan Roy didn’t know Jeffrey but saw him every time she dropped off and picked up her son at Evergreen Middle.

“Jeff would be out there – rain or shine – it didn’t matter,” she said. “He just wasn’t taking it down, throwing it over his shoulders and taking it inside. He was very purposeful about it.”

“As simple as it is to some people, it really is a big deal. He doesn’t do it for an attaboy.“He just does it because it’s right.”

    reland1 – I can’t go with Barr…

    http://www.bobbarr2008.com/press/press-releases/7/statement-on-ca-supreme-court-same-sex-marriage-decision

I read that and realized he has no clue whatsoever what he’s talking about. Prop 22 was passed in 2000 making marriage between one man and one woman in California. The CA Supreme Court overturned the VOTERS and Barr thinks this is how it should be done. I can’t imagine what he’s thinking.

Your are correct-we CA conservatives must work together.
This country is in for some hard times.
I’m not giving up. I see the inquisitive faces of the young people at my local college-that venue is a worthy “battle-ground”.

Brooklyn Red # 84 and et.al. You and I generally see eye to eye. It’s good to know you’re out there.

I’m curator of a Civil War museum near Fort Benning, Georgia and when I have a military visitor, I let him in free. The museum is privately owned and is not supported by any Government agency or historical organizaion, so therefore we have to charge an admission to maintain it. But I won’t charge a military person, man or woman, because they are putting their lives on the line for me and the rest of the country.
I’ve read comments for the past two or three weeks, and very seldom do I read where people feel as I do, that we are at war, and this is not your usual political campaign. When I say that I’m voting for McCain, and not my principles, to keep obummer or what’s her name out of office, I”m accused of advocating a totalitarian sociaty. I disagree with McCain on several things, but he won’t turn tail and run out of Iraq, like the other two. Obummer is a marxsit, and you won’t recognize the country one year or less after he takes office. I won’t have have any more military visitors to the museum because they’ll be busy tracking down terrorists, because obummer and the dems will get rid of the safe guards we have left.
I’m keeping my principles, and voting against obummer and what’s her name. One of my strongest principles is voting for a canidate on the ballot, and not going fishing or writing in someone’s name. If you’r going to do that, just vote democrat. If you vote obummer in office, can you guarantee that he’ll be voted out of office in four years, provided we’re still holding elections as we know them now. I’m scared to death of him going in as our military Commander-in-Chief. I think other people should be, too. I’ve got one Republican Senator running for re-election, and I’ll vote for him. I haven’t given up my priciples, like I said before, it’s just that I don’t have a canidate that shares all of them with me, but I just can not vote democrat, write someone’s name in, or go fishing. How is that advocating a totalitarian sociaty? I think we’ll get that with obummer, as I’ve also stated before.I love my country too much to turn it over to him.

Bob Barr said:”Regardless of whether one supports or opposes same sex marriage, the decision to recognize such unions or not ought to be a power each state exercises on its own, rather than imposition of a one-size-fits-all mandate by the federal government…

Joy…unless I’m wrong…I believe that Mr. Barr is correct from a Constitutional point of view. The Federal Govt. has NO business involving itself in State issues…unfortunately that is most of the problem with our government.
