Amnesty alert: 10 GOP Senators protest Feinstein/Craig illegal alien farmworker amendment

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 20, 2008 06:37 PM

The good news: Republican senators went on record against the Feinstein/Craig illegal alien farmworker amendment today in a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The bad news: There were only 10 of them willing to put their names on the letter:

agam.jpg

Sen. Inhofe wants you to sign the No Amnesty letter. You can do so here. The text:

Dear Majority Leader Reid:

We write to express disappointment that the Senate Appropriations Committee chose to include in the War Supplemental more than 100 pages of immigration language that would grant legal status to more than one million illegal alien agricultural workers and their families. We urge you to remove these controversial provisions from the bill so we can enact essential funding for our troops without delay. If these provisions remain in the bill, you can expect a vigorous debate on immigration policy.

As noted here previously, Sen. David Vitter will offer an amendment to strip the Feinstein/Craig provision from the Iraq war supplemental bill.

From Vitter’s office:

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today joined fellow immigration reform-minded colleagues in a letter to U.S. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid expressing disappointment in the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee’s inclusion of the Feinstein AGJobs language to the Iraq War emergency funding bill and urging for the controversial provision to be removed. Vitter joined U.S Sens. Jeff Sessions, Charles Grassley, Tom Coburn, Johnny Isakson, Saxby Chambliss, James Inhofe, John Barrasso, Elizabeth Dole and Jim Bunning on the letter.

“The Democratic leadership is building a reputation for sneaking unpopular provisions that would never see the light of day as stand-alone bills into larger necessary pieces of legislation, like the Iraq War supplemental funding bill,” said Vitter. “When will the amnesty proponents learn that the American people want border security and enforcement as their immigration reform policy, not sweeping amnesty for millions of illegal aliens? I join my colleagues in urging the Democratic leader to remove the Feinstein AG Jobs provision.”

Vitter also announced that he will introduce an amendment today to strike that Feinstein AGJobs language from the Iraq War emergency funding bill.

“My clear and concise amendment will simply state that the immigration amnesty language should be removed. We need to fight this bad policy and raise the awareness of the American people,” added Vitter.

Vitter is the chairman of the U.S. Senate Border Security and Enforcement First Caucus.

Make your voice heard.

While I don’t think the border is as much a national security issue as other here I think this amnesty violates respect for the rule of law. In addition the process for this is atrocious. Sens. Feinstein and Craig don’t have the guts to debate this issue on its own. Instead they tuck into the war supplemental.

Don’t forget to forward the petition for friends and family.

Feinstein, Craig et.al. (including McCain and Bush) are determined to thwart the will of the American people regarding amnesty for illegal aliens. If this bill is passed, opponents of these seditionists need to be proactive in follow-up.
I can guarantee you that the pro-illegal activists and the elected representatives, of Mexico, are already studying every aspect of this bill to learn how to game the system. I don’t want to hear three or four years from now that this was a giant loophole for millions of undeserving illegals to be granted amnesty because this bill was poorly written and poorly executed.
It is imperative that from day one, if passed, this sham is exposed to the light. Who is the enforcement agency? How is verification handled? What agri-business ventures are taking advantage, are they adhering to the law, who are their business associates in congress that are benefitting?

In short, I sincerely hope this bill fails, as it should. However, if it passes, opponents of illegal immigration need to be vigilant and monitor every aspect of its’ consequences. Only vigilance can save us from the duplicity of our elected so-called leaders.

Do we have any people in DC with the testicular fortitude to call for a Constitutional hearing? Should we really need a Constitutional Amendment to prevent the introduction of pork “hidden” in completely unrelated and separate bills coming before the house and the senate?

We need to bring back line item vetoes but I would go further and say if the funding is relevant to We the People and We the People are going to bear the burden for the Cost, We the People need to have an active say in the matter. If our representatives reprehensibles are not going to represent us, it needs to be brought forth in a vote before We the People and there is NO LAW allowing for the government to overturn a vote of the people no matter what California and the SCOTUS may believe.

One issue, one city, one state at a time we need to take this country back. If we fail to act now, we will be relegated to defending ourselves in street to street actions. That thought is not something I look forward to but it seems ever more likely. The powers of the federal government are few and well defined. Any powers not specifically granted to the federal government by the Constitution are relegated to the States and We The People!

It really shows how corrupt many congress people has become, when one can slip some “amendment” totally apart from the bill itself, in hopes of getting it passed unnoticed. What the heck do the illegals have to do with the Iraq war? I’d like to slip an amendment in, myself. Make it illegal to put unrelated amendments in a bill. I seriously doubt I would ever see that, or my kids, or their kids.

For the correspondence to have only 10 signatures tells us a great deal. This portion of amnesty will pass in very short order, unless we lock down the phones again.
I tried calling my senators yesterday, but the lines were busy. Perhaps we will once again exorcise this ever-returning demon.

Where is Jim DeMint? Did he sign it and I just can’t read the signature?

I am sorry to point out that neither of my senators from Tennessee, Corker and Alexander, signed the letter. The great state of Tennessee is not being represented by the people of this once free and proud state. It is so depressing. I will contact each of them this morning, but this is getting so trying.

The line item veto passed in 1995, but was ruled unconstitutional. We do need a new amendment, and I’m shocked everyone just gave up so easily. Same for term limits.

I have signed and forwarded to family and friends. I will keep pounding on my only reliable Senator with the other “wide stance” considered as a bad joke and embarrassment to the taxpayers of Idaho. With only 10 Senators willing to step up to the plate it doesn’t look to good for the home team. Sounds like it is time to fire up the torches and sharpen the pitchforks again. These people in DC just don’t seem to get it that an overwhelming majority of legal Americans don’t want amnesty for law breaking illegal invaders.

Here are the list of Senators who signed the letter as posted above.

Vitter joined U.S Sens. Jeff Sessions, Charles Grassley, Tom Coburn, Johnny Isakson, Saxby Chambliss, James Inhofe, John Barrasso, Elizabeth Dole and Jim Bunning on the letter.

I also signed, and yes, if it means a little extra spam in my email box, so be it. I’m stuck with Senator Switchback Brownback - so there’s not point in contacting him.

I can’t express my disgust for Washington that they continue to pound the amnesty drum even though they’ve been given a clear message from the people they represent. Every one of them (save these 10) should be recalled from representation since they don’t seem to know what the word means.

Thanks for passing that on. That leads to my question of why Jim DeMint didn’t sign it. I thought he was reliable on this issue. Makes me wonder what he is objecting to. He isn’t my senator so I don’t think I would get a response if I asked his office directly. Does anyone have any insight?

The “other” republican Senators are hoping the provision stays under the radar and away from the public. That way they can vote for it without consequence. Most of the “others” support amnesty but know it is the kiss of death to openly support it without cover. Should tell them something, but doesn’t. Just another special interest group they can pander to for re-election.

Look where we are today. The people who supposedly represent us HIDING crucial information. Our country is sunk, going the way of Rome, if we don’t institute changes to the legislature and throw out the career politicians.

Don’t do that. Vote for Pastor Chuck Baldwin of the Constituion party. I know many here support the Libertarian party but I read an article yesterday where Bob Barr is starting to waiver on the no amensty or mass immigration issue to appease the hardcore libertarians. Baldwin will NEVER waiver. At least use your vote to sway changes on the 2 party system.
