Barack Obama: Gaffe machine

All it takes is one gaffe to taint a Republican for life. The political establishment never let Dan Quayle live down his fateful misspelling of “potatoe.” The New York Times distorted and misreported the first President Bush’s questions about new scanner technology at a grocers’ convention to brand him permanently as out of touch.

But what about Barack Obama? The guy’s a perpetual gaffe machine. Let us count the ways, large and small, that his tongue has betrayed him throughout the campaign:

* Last May, he claimed that Kansas tornadoes killed a whopping 10,000 people: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” The actual death toll: 12.

*Earlier this month in Oregon, he redrew the map of the United States: “Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go.”

*Last week, in front of a roaring Sioux Falls, South Dakota audience, Obama exulted: “Thank you Sioux City…I said it wrong. I’ve been in Iowa for too long. I’m sorry.”

*Explaining last week why he was trailing Hillary Clinton in Kentucky, Obama again botched basic geography: “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known, coming from a nearby state of Arkansas. So it’s not surprising that she would have an advantage in some of those states in the middle.” On what map is Arkansas closer to Kentucky than Illinois?

*Obama has as much trouble with numbers as he has with maps. Last March, on the anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Alabama, he claimed his parents united as a direct result of the civil rights movement:

“There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.”

Obama was born in 1961. The Selma march took place in 1965. His spokesman, Bill Burton, later explained that Obama was “speaking metaphorically about the civil rights movement as a whole.”

*Earlier this month in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by honing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.” The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.

*Over the weekend in Oregon, Obama pleaded ignorance of the decades-old, multi-billion-dollar massive Hanford nuclear waste clean-up:

“Here’s something that you will rarely hear from a politician, and that is that I’m not familiar with the Hanford, uuuuhh, site, so I don’t know exactly what’s going on there. (Applause.) Now, having said that, I promise you I’ll learn about it by the time I leave here on the ride back to the airport.”

I assume on that ride, a staffer reminded him that he’s voted on at least one defense authorization bill that addressed the “costs, schedules, and technical issues” dealing with the nation’s most contaminated nuclear waste site.

*Last March, the Chicago Tribune reported this little-noticed nugget about a fake autobiographical detail in Obama’s “Dreams from My Father:”

“Then, there’s the copy of Life magazine that Obama presents as his racial awakening at age 9. In it, he wrote, was an article and two accompanying photographs of an African-American man physically and mentally scarred by his efforts to lighten his skin. In fact, the Life article and the photographs don’t exist, say the magazine’s own historians.”

* And in perhaps the most seriously troubling set of gaffes of them all, Obama told a Portland crowd over the weekend that Iran doesn’t “pose a serious threat to us”–cluelessly arguing that “tiny countries” with small defense budgets can’t do us harm– and then promptly flip-flopped the next day, claiming, “I’ve made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave.”

Barack Obama–promoted by the Left and the media as an all-knowing, articulate, transcendent Messiah–is a walking, talking gaffe machine. How many more passes does he get? How many more can we afford?

McCain media consultant departs May 20, 9:56 PM (ET)

MIAMI (AP) - A top adviser is leaving Republican John McCain’s presidential campaign because he doesn’t want to work against Democrat Barack Obama.

Mark McKinnon, the chief media consultant to McCain, wrote in a campaign memo last year that if Obama won the Democratic nomination, he would not actively campaign against him. With the results of Tuesday night’s primaries in Kentucky and Oregon, Obama claimed he had a majority of convention delegates.

OK. So now McCain’s guys want to just give up and let the pencil neck marxist move into the Whitehous. Why not in June? Anyone have a problem with that? And give him Chavez-style executive power by decree. No need for Congress or the courts. Cool.

I got into a discussion with a Democrat yesterday

Interesting because I recently tried to have a serious, non-partisan discussion with a liberal friend about Obama. All I could get was utterly meaningless phrases like “change”, “restore America’s image”, “an historic opportunity”, “bring people together” etc… Any attempt to pin her down with specifics resulted in a BDS rant. It was spooky, especially since this person is (suprise!) a teacher and I was truly interested in some intelligent analysis, not Democrat talking points. After a few minutes I saw it was useless and gave up. (Note: This “educator” will actually refer to Micheal Moore as a source of info) Trying to logic with these people is utterly useless. While Obama, like many liberals, is naive and lacking substance, it is his supporters like the this teacher that make him dangerous.

    Um…no.

Bonnaroo is an annual music festival that lasts three days and literally features around 100 acts — most of which are MUCH bigger than the Decembrists (in fact, last year — when the Decembrists played it — it included The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Ziggy Marley, the Flaming Lips, Tool and — the piece de resistance — The Police (a band which hadn’t toured for many, many years prior)). Every year the festival draws huge audiences. That’s the point — smaller bands (like the Decembrists) get to play with far bigger bands (like, any of the aforementioned) for exposure. And loads of people go, because get to see about 100 bands in three days.

On their own, however, the Decemberists draw much, much smaller crowds. And they have NEVER been able to bring in 75,000 people on their own. Not even close.

I’m just pointing out that they have, in fact, played larger venues, and even if not every person there was there for just that band, they’ve had the larger exposure such as Bonnaroo

I would know. I was at Bonnaroo last year and saw them perform, as well as seeing The Police(which was legendary, in my opinion…they were together when i was a kid, and seeing them at this point was something very memorable).

If nothing else, it would have helped to clarify ;)

I’ll call you on that. They played on the “Which Stage”, which happens to only have the capacity for 30,000 people. Please also keep in mind that this is a festival with hundreds of bands/performers (many who are much more popular than the Decemberists). Also keep in mind that only a handful of bands play at any given time. Also, in 2007, they sold a total of 80,000 tickets for the entire festival.

    Gotcha.

I guess initially I (and apparently, those who run music blogs dedicated to what really is underground music) was just amazed that anyone could contend that the Decemberists single-handedly brought out 75,000 people. Anyone who genuinely and truly is passionate about indie rock — and the Decembrists — and follows this stuff would know that is just patently absurd.

So you were at Bonnaroo? Funny fact: I sing for a band that’s featured on the compilation from that year’s festival.

Their stage only had a capacity for 30,000. Even if they went over capacity (which I highly doubt) only 80,000 tickets were sold to the ENTIRE event. It is highly unlikely that all but 5,000 were watching them play (10 other bands were playing at the same time, including on the main stage).

They did not play to a crowd of 75,000. They played at a festival with over 75,000. There’s a pretty big difference between the two.

It may be petty, but what you asserted was false, and I was merely trying to correct your mistake.

Yeah, and i’ve got tickets for this year too! The lineup this year is really awesome. Best 200 bucks i’ve ever spent. I’m not one usually for the crowds, but…for this kind of thing, i make an exception. Last year was really an experience., cant wait for it again this year.

    And abstract, I wasn’t being

    meanspirited

The post I was responding to stated that the Decembrists were the sole reason that 75,000 people attended that rally. That simply isn’t true — and it was a ridiculous statement. I was responding to a commenter’s false assertion. You may disagree with those who attended all you want — and obviously, most people here do — but to try to state that they were there for a band that (as I said before) draws about 700 people on their own as a touring band is incorrect.

But 1) I’m totally jealous you got to see the Police play. They are legends and it must’ve been AMAZING. 2) There are about 30 incredible bands (IMHO, out of the roughly 100) playing Bonnaroo this year, so you’ll definitely have fun. I’m not sure I would. I lived in the Portland area for several years, and the pattern for demonstrations and rallies there is:

    1. The event organizers routinely at least double, and frequently triple the police estimate of attendees; and

    2. The media unquestioningly parrot the organizers’ figures.

That’s not to say that there weren’t in fact 75,000 willfully ignorant, knee-jerk leftist latte-sippers in the crowd that day. Portland has much more than its quota of such people. Bear in mind as well, though, that the Saturday in question was a rare occurrence in Oregon in May: a sunny, warm, dry day. A large part of the crowd were no doubt simply one-day sun-worshipers who would’ve been out at Waterfront Park even if “Jesus 2.0″ hadn’t been there.

Michelle, this column was superb. Every voter should read it.

And not one mention of his wife or her “gaffes,” since we’re not supposed to talk about her - the woman married to the man who may become the world’s most powerful political and military leader. Is it not sexist to try to sweep her importance under the rug?

Good work Michelle, however I would point out at least two more gaffes that you didn’t mention.

He mentioned that people should go to Whole Foods when he was in Iowa even though that is a Chicago only area supermarket.

The more important gaffe is the speech in Milwaukee two days after the V. Tech tragedy that you talked about here. Had that speech been given any media attention his campaign would have ended right then and there.

al-Reuter’s story at Drudge. Zogby poll shows Osama with an 8% lead on McCain.

I know the formerly reliable Zogby has gotten the anti-GOP bug ever since the GWoT started, but I doubt he is cooking the numbers that badly.

And as big a RINO turd McCain may be, I don’t think people comprehend the disaster, especially 3 or 4 decades of a activist and partisan Demonrat Supreme Court will be for the survival of this country.

Whole Foods is a semi-national chain, started in Austin, TX. Found in college towns and other bastions of liberalism, selling essentials like arugula to the elite.
