New York Times profiles Jawa Report anti-terrorist blogger

By see-dubya  •  May 21, 2008 12:25 AM

One of my daily reads is the Jawa Report, and not just because I did some guest blogging-there once upon a time. There’s always some good jihad-busting action, and Dr. Rusty Shackleford and co. do more than just write about it–they lead it, actually exposing and taking down Al-Qaeda’s websites.

One of my favorite Jawas is Jane Novak, who writes both at the Jawa and on her own blog, Armies of Liberation, more or less exclusively about Yemen. And she manages to have a real effect on events there, where things are happening. I never realized this until I saw the (quite fair) New York Times report on Jane, but she’s never even been there. She’s advocating human rights and exposing corruption and malfeasance out of her FOB in New Jersey:

Ms. Novak does not fit the profile of a dilettante in exotic causes. A former sales manager for a textile company, she speaks with a distinct Brooklyn accent, having grown up in Flatbush. When a Yemeni government minister visited the United States last year and invited the notorious “Jane,” as she is known throughout Yemen, to go to Washington for a meeting, she turned him down. “It was too much, the money, the kids, all for a one-day trip,” she said.

Nor does she have any background in Middle East studies. One of her opponents in Yemen accused her of being a Zionist member of Aipac, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. “I had to Google it,” Ms. Novak said with a chuckle. “I didn’t know what it was.”

Yet being over the target, she’s taking more than a little flak:

Ms. Nowak’s perpetual harping on these themes appears to infuriate the Yemeni authorities. In late 2005, Al Jazeera included her as a guest on a special about Yemen, along with a former United States ambassador, a leader of the Yemeni opposition, and a spokesman for the Yemeni president, Ali Abdullah Saleh. As soon as the spokesman came onto the line, he began a tirade, ignoring the moderator’s pleas to let others speak.

“She doesn’t speak Arabic, she’s never visited Yemen, and she’s not a real journalist!” the spokesman shouted. “She just has a Web site that she uses to attack Yemen!”

Heh. The government of Yemen sure is scared of her. They’re sending out their character assassins against a former sales manager in New Jersey. What a great way to spend your free time, pestering Islamofascist-abetting tyrants.

Seriously, though, read that Times story. I wouldn’t send you to the New York Times lightly, but there you’ll learn all about Jane, get a basic sitrep on Yemen, and learn about journalist Abdul Karim al-Khaiwani, who faces the death penalty for telling the truth about events in Yemen.

You can sign a petition to support al-Khaiwani here. Please do!

lgm, i would point out the fallacy of your argument.

The NYT does, in fact, publish things we do like.

These are few and far between. Their bias and misreporting of stories has been shown here and many other places, even recently.

I dont doubt that the people who work for the Times aren’t in some fashion intelligent. But make no mistake, there are many people such as myself, who could produce the same quality of work(were we willing to do so).

And their “elite” status comes from the very bias and left-wing toting ideology they spew forth on a regular basis.

First, the “smart” crack. I have a BA and working toward my MA. I just recieved the final report for the semester - GPA 4.0. In professional writing (which includes journalism). Calling conservatives unintelligent (or implying the same) is really immature and childish. And - dare I say it - a reflection of the level of intelligence and maturity of the one doing the attacking…

As for the rest: Think blind pig and truffle. Or stopped clock. Or the NYT reporting something accurately and fairly.

All three are right once in a great while.

Grade inflation: it’s “received”. “In professional writing (which includes journalism).” is not a sentence. Now, I know I dont always spel or sentencize so good, but I’m not bragging about my grades in writing.

The “message” was that your 4.0 made you the equal to NYTimes writers. I used your errors (almost as many errors as words) to rebut this.

Yeah, because there’s absolutely no difference between a quickly-typed comment and the work I do in graduate school and a daily basis.

    Got it.

You, unfortunately, did not get my message. I never equated myself to a NYTimes writer.

I wouldn’t want to be a NYTimes writer because I can think of only a few other places where job security is steadily declining. The numbers of the NYT haven’t been stellar as of late, you know.

What my message was can be summed up as this:

Conservatives are not stupid because we’re conservatives. Were I (or Michelle, or many of the other conservatives here) as dumb as liberals like yourself claim we are, we wouldn’t be able to function, let alone hold jobs or earn degrees.

Do I make typos in my comments? Yeah. I’m the first to admit it.

But don’t impugn my intelligence by saying the grades I earned were inflated simply because of a few typos. For what it’s worth, one of my final projects was a 120 page script, with one letter grade docked per typo. In case you need me to spell that out for you, it means I made no typos.

That’s a typical liberal tactic - make personal attacks rather than substantiative ones.

The NYT is a biased paper, out of touch with a good portion of Americans, who they regard as unintelligent rubes.

Are you, perhaps, a NYT reporter?

yeah, it was a slight bait on my part. :)

I would offer, however, that lgm assuming that there’s nothing to be happy about would be, well…a bit off the mark.

I have a great many things to be happy about, personally in my own life as well as things that we talk about here on this blog.

I am happy I live in America, and that I enjoy the freedoms we are afforded and that have been fought and sacrificed for in the past and present. I love the fact that we can even have this discussion, as such open political discourse is unknown and often an offense that results in at least a stay in prison(if not worse).

I delight that my children can grow up in the most unique country on Earth, that I can provide them with opportunities that other people only dream about, and that I can raise them to be decent citizens and that they know they too are free to speak their minds and follow their dreams.

And that’s all the tip of the iceberg.

What I do find difficult is the liberal spin the NYT puts on everything. How Americans are evil gluttons bent on causing destruction and promoting Zionism/Imperialism in other parts of the world.

There is plenty of doom and gloom that comes from the other side of aisle.

Conservatives, however, seek a different path. Rush Limbaugh’s ideas on the matter ring true (i glaze over the religious overtone, but find it equally as relevant for those who do believe), as is listed on his wiki:

I love being a conservative. We conservatives are proud of our philosophy. Unlike our liberal friends, who are constantly looking for new words to conceal their true beliefs and are in a perpetual state of reinvention, we conservatives are unapologetic about our ideals.
We are confident in our principles and energetic about openly advancing them. We believe in individual liberty, limited government, capitalism, the rule of law, faith, a color-blind society and national security.
We support school choice, enterprise zones, tax cuts, welfare reform, faith-based initiatives, political speech, homeowner rights and the war on terrorism.
And at our core we embrace and celebrate the most magnificent governing document ever ratified by any nation — the U.S. Constitution. Along with the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes our God-given natural right to be free, it is the foundation on which our government is built and has enabled us to flourish as a people.
We conservatives are never stronger than when we are advancing our principles.[50]

Couldn’t have said that any better myself.

I have plenty to be upbeat about. Saying otherwise just doesnt bear out.

The only requirements that the NYT has for hiring journalists is that they must be:

    1) Liberal, although being a socialist puts you on the “fast track.”

    3) Prone to exaggeration.

    4) Pathelogically disposed to prevarication.

    5) Able to display outrage at being caught at said prevarications.

    6) Able to claim their work is “patriotic,” when in reality, it is anarchistic….and also show outrage.

    7) Capable of shouting down and talking over those with opposing viewpoints….and also show outrage.

    8) Able to make personal attacks on anyone who makes a better, or more logical argument than you…and also show outrage.

    9) Able to make mis-characteriztions, mis-quote, mis-edit those in opposition, and refuse to, or ignore requests for corrections.

    and, finally;

    10) Able to show admiration, adoration, explanation, and rationalization for worldwide tyrants who openly oppose the United States of America.

Who do you suppose, on this blog, would qualify…?
