Of donuts and dumb celebrities

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 23, 2008 12:50 PM

1ddrr.jpg Sigh. You all know I’ve been a fan of Dunkin Donuts for quite some time–and have touted their strong position in favor of immigration enforcement.

Charles Johnson notes, and many readers have e-mailed about, Dunkin Donuts’ spokeswoman Rachel Ray’s clueless sporting of a jihadi chic keffiyeh in a recent DD ad campaign. I’m hoping her hate couture choice was spurred more by ignorance than ideology.

Is Ray’s blunder worth boycotting DD over? I’ll be interested to hear the company’s take. At this point, I’m going to give the management the benefit of the doubt. They have braved boycott threats and attacks over their lonely, principled stance against illegal immigration. Given their pro-rule of law, America first position, I highly doubt the executive offices are filled with moonbats who endorse Ray’s keffiyeh chic.

While we’re on the subject of donuts, I highly recommend a visit to The Fractured Prune if you’re lucky enough to have one in your neighborhood. (Check here.) I took my newly-minted preschool graduate to the one in Towson to celebrate this morning.

They specialize in hot, hand-dipped, made-to-order donuts that are pure heaven.

Yummmmmm.

No politics. Just sticky, sweet goodness fresh from the oven:

I’m leaning toward it being ignorance onher part, Michelle. It’s probably something she picked up on one of her outings for Tasty Travels or $40 a Day for the Food Network.

My wife is a huge fan of hers. I suspect Rachel may be a little left-leaning but she has yet to strike me as an outright moonbat.

Yes, I read the whole thing. I am wondering why it is even an issue. Where I live, many of the owners of DD’s are Muslims or Sikhs and wear head covering. Would you even consider boycotting an ad with a yarmulke?

Nope - just cautious. As anyone with law enforcement background, and anyone who has been in the military for any length of time, will tell you, if it looks out of place, check it out. If there’s nothing out of order, no harm, no foul.

But situational awareness demands that you notice everything, no matter how trivial it might seem.

And, as MM indicated, this doesn’t mean an immediate boycott of DD, just give the management the benefit of the doubt.

Notice the past tense verb above.

Michael Vale passed away in 2005. Ironically, the cause of death was “complications from diabetes.” One could argue that “making the doughnuts” was not the problem. Eating them might have been.

I must have been really bad yesterday because she brought home half a dozen chocolate fudge donuts to punish me with (actually she was joneses for some). Oh well so much for the weight loss program at least until the weather clears up here so I can get on the bicycle again.

We watch a lot of Food Network at our house I really hope it is a case of ignorance when it comes to Rachel Ray wearing the liberal useful idiot’s scarf of solidarity with Islamic terrorist thugs. I have eaten several of her recipes my wife has prepared for me I would hate to think a cute little Italian Catholic girl would be in league with the forces of nefarious Islam.

I don’t know about that - the anti-american fascists over at the food network is well renown for their support for the Palestinians.

But hey - if there is a call to boycott Dunkin Donuts, maybe it would be awesome to combine that with a huge anti-McCain rally at that same time.

Full disclosure, my parents owned a DD at that time, which I worked at when available…at age 12-13. For $5/day. Dunkin Donuts are hard to make profitable, especially if you followed the (in the early 80s) brain dead advice of the HQ in Massachusetts. After we sold ours, it went bankrupt within a year or so.
There were three located in Salem, OR in the 80s… the last one recently gave up it’s franchise and is now a “DayNight Donuts.”

How fast would that get ysnked off? How fast would they be sending out the apologies, the apologists and anything else to appease the followers of the moon god?

And what of those followers? How many people would they slaughter in their Friday after prayers weekly hate riots?

It would not be shrugged off as a mere ignorant fashion choice.

So, until they can get the original guy back, just buy the donuts. They’re good. And they are made by Americans, or people who came here fair and square

The American dream is different for each of us but the American deal is just a square deal. Play by the rules and you can do your best to follow your dreams.

So, just eat the donuts. Drink the delicious coffee, and support a business that offers a square deal.

You know, I am inclined to agree with you.

HOWEVER, I have to admit that Islamic garb DOES make me uncomfortable. Am I bigoted, am I a racist? No. Culturalist? Yes.

Let me relate a quick antecdote:

A few weeks ago I was walking my dog in my apartment complex. I saw a lady over on the playground with her child on the swingset.

The lady was in a full burka. I was shocked and dismayed. This is in NJ for goodness sake. It is my opinion that people should acculturate themselves when they move to the US. Oppressive 8th century traditions like that have no place in NJ. Should it be illegal? No. Am I allowed to say its bullsh|t? Yes, of course.

So, I suppose because of things like that, when I see elements of ME culture creeping into our culture, I get a bit uncomfortable.

In this case, I think you are right though. It’s just a scarf, if it was a headcovering, I think that would be cause to worry.

I mean, if I’m wrong on the pattern thing, fine. Then DD has some ’splainin’ to do. But if it’s just a scarf, then aren’t we getting bent out of shape over nothing?

Besides, isn’t DD the company that COMMITTED to doing FULL checks on all their employees and new hires to make sure they were LEGAL immigrants, and fired any and all ILLEGAL ones after repoting them to ICE? Using the kaffiyeh just seems out of character for them.

Unless this one was done by some pali-symathiser commercial maker and it slipped by the folks at corporate.
